March 4, 20205 yr ^ its a good idea that we had discussed on the old cle ikea thread. it's like a modern version of the old sears or jcpenneys catalog stores. i guess everything old is new again.
March 4, 20205 yr I mean, eCommerce is basically the catalog store format, just online. Amazon had some of their pop-up stores a while back that was basically a catalog store with some products on display.

March 6, 20205 yr Columbus-based coworking firm COhatch is building out a 10,000 sq ft space at Legacy Village by the end of 2020 in the former Charming Charlie space. 10 locations planned in northeast Ohio, along with others in Easton Town Center and Dublin. But my favorite quote is, "Many of the sites targeted for the other nine Cleveland-area locations will be in 'walkable urban areas requiring revitalization and building restoration that honors the history and architecture of each space,' the company said." https://www.crainscleveland.com/real-estate/columbus-area-firm-cohatch-hatches-plan-10-coworking-spaces-cleveland-area Edited March 6, 20205 yr by SgtBarone

May 7, 20205 yr So.. Nordstrom announced this week that they are closing 16 of their full line department stores. If you believe some posted rumors, one of them may be the store at Beachwood Place.... which surely suffers by perceived mall issues plus, especially, being a more costly to run old, 3 floor store - some 70K sqaure feet larger than the 2 floor stores they have built for a decade or more in most new markets. I hope not true - as that is a bad sign forcCLE retail overall- and could be a huge blow to Beachwood Place and easily could hasten the departure of Saks and others - if not the mall itself. Nordstrom dept stores in Richmond, Annapolis, Hartford and a Dallas store noted in media as on closing list - which I assume we may see today. Edited May 7, 20205 yr by eyehrtfood
May 7, 20205 yr Wow lets hope its not one of them... I hope I don't sound overly dramatic but I really feel that could be a death blow to BWM given all the issues they have had in the last few years. Having the only Nordstrom and Saks in this region is a huge draw. Without those, I fear they don't have a lot to stand on.
May 7, 20205 yr When a mall gets the reputation of having security/safety issues inside and on the parking lots outside, its days are numbered. One or two incidents spread out over an extended period of time can be written off as exceptions. When they happen with regularity and major media coverage, that is the beginning of the end. One also has to wonder with the demise of Richmond Town Square, has the frequency and severity of shoplifting hit there as well. Macy's at Richmond Town Square as well as J.C.Penney at Richmond Town Square were regular locations for shoplifting incidents in the local reporting of Richmond Heights Police Blotter items.
May 7, 20205 yr I still would be pretty surprised if the Beachwood Nordstrom closed. Even being a larger layout, my understanding has always been that this was one of their busier locations. If anything, I think we would see them downsizing the space by closing off the third floor before completely pulling out of this market. As we know, the east side still has alot of money - and they sure like shopping at Nordstrom (and Sak's). Before the retail shut down, the Beachwood Sak's was expanding their collection again - at least their men's ware. 3-4 years ago they stopped carrying Versace and Emporio Armani. Both of them were recently brought back in store.
May 7, 20205 yr Add Hartford CT and Sacramento CA to the list for Nordstrom... EDIT: According to Twitter also Chandler AZ, Freehold NJ, and a bunch more in CA: Riverside, Montclair, Escondido and Santa Barbara Sounds like they have notified employees at this point so Beachwood might be fine. May 7, 20205 yr Good news,, Bill.. Phew! Does appear Nordstrom rumors were rumors per published list of closing stores. Now, Broookfield Properties needs to get its act in gear and remake Beachwood Place.

Has there ever been a "classic mall" that has had a developer add on mixed use elements to the outside, with ground level retail and residential/office above? I would think that area would go for something like that--lots of potential for rentals and condos.

They added the exterior retail and across the parking lot another developer built a mixed use highrise with retail on the ground floor. Southpark in Strongsville added the exterior retail portion, no highrise mixed use though.

Tyson’s Corner Center in Northern Virginia (which, to me, is a lot like Washington’s Beachwood Place) has transformed exactly like this over the last 5+ years, in a scale that is truly impressive.

Anchors are Nordstrom, Macy's and Bloomingdales (Saks and Lord & Taylor also at one point that made 5 anchors). It has an office tower in the center thats maybe like 8-9 stories. Looks to be mostly medical offices. Similar demographics as Beachwood. Old money clientele, inner ring suburb, is on public transit lines, and has had some crime problems. Still keeps chugging along. https://www.loopnet.com/Listing/16810663/64-Old-Orchard-Shopping-Center-Skokie-IL/ Edited May 8, 20205 yr by metrocity

Eastwood Mall at US 422 and SR 46 in Niles, OH: Anchors: Dillard's Outlet, JC Penney, Boscov's (in old Sears space). Target. and Macy's, has added (attached): an office building, a Residence Inn by Marriott, and an event center. It is also surrounded by strip shopping and free standing restaurants.
May 8, 20205 yr Beachwood Place would need a rezoning in order to have mixed use with offices and residential. I know the city was looking at it last year, and Brookfield has really been pushing them to. As far as I know tho, nothing has happened. From when they rezoned for the previous expansion plan (of which Zara was the only "exterior" store to be built), it would have to go before voters. After how bloody that last one was, I don't think the city has the appetite to do it all again. Brookfield isn't the problem here - they want mixed use. Beachwood is what is holding them back.

Amazing how the NIMBYs would rather see a dead mall than remake it into something new. It's not like a developer is going to mow it down and put in a McMansion development on that site.... (facepalm)
May 10, 20205 yr Hell, didn't they bulldoze some homes along Richmond to expand the Beachwood Place parking lot for those restaurants that never arrived. About as mindboggling as the Old vs New Brainard road nonsense.

May 14, 20205 yr Since "A Cookie and A Cupcake" moved to Ohio City, it's spot in Tremont at 2681 W 14th St is being repurposed as a cigar shop and lounge, the "Tremont Cigar Company." Not really notable to the company, but I also find it funny and unfortunate that the owner's name is Alex Jones.
May 14, 20205 yr That is awesome news. Nothing wrong with the ohio city place, but cigar lounges need more love.
May 17, 20205 yr If you ever wonder why retail downtown has been dead for decades, look no further than yet another window smashed at the CLE Clothing Co. store on E4th which was burglarized 24 hours after re-opening. Seriously, are retailers really going to open up downtown when Geiger's and CLE Clothing Co. can't go a month without a broken window and merchandise constantly being stolen?

May 17, 20205 yr Maestro Tailor on E. 14th has been broken into a ton as well. Windows smashed every time. He has one boarded up right now actually. Edited May 17, 20205 yr by mrclifton88
May 17, 20205 yr If you live downtown, you'd know a majority of these broken windows come at the hands of the homeless population. There a few homeless people I could point out throughout any given week that I've seen break car mirrors, throw things in the street, break bottles on the sidewalk, rip plants out of planters, break branches off of trees, etc. Usually the destruction comes from people with no intent to rob, rather people who have nothing better to do/aren't thinking straight. Yesterday, some poor homeless "kid" (twenties) tried to start something with me at 10am while I was on a walk. I did nothing to trigger it, he was just clearly mentally ill. If we want to stop the broken windows/destruction, it starts with figuring out solutions for the homeless community, especially the mentally ill ones.

June 5, 20205 yr That's unfortunate. It was just updated recently as part of the shopping center redo, wasn't it? Very surprised at the Chapel Hill location closing - though only because I thought all of the anchor stores had already closed there. Both Chapel Hill and Ashtabula mall will be joining Richmond pretty soon. Just a coincidence its the same slumlord ownership?

June 8, 20205 yr That CVS on Euclid near East 9th was reopening today and the pharmacy will reopen tomorrow. Although perhaps the tweet was deleted because the info was in error? June 8, 20205 yr I went to CVS this morning and it was still closed so I walked to the other one at Rockwell. I couldn't tell if they were working on the inside... Heinen's had workers in and out. Geiger's seemed quiet today from what I could tell.
