That CVS on Euclid near East 9th was reopening today and the pharmacy will reopen tomorrow. Although perhaps the tweet was deleted because the info was in error?

I'm most interested to see if there are reopening dates soon for Geiger's and Heinen's.

the CVS on East 9th is open and so is the pharmacy. There are also a lot of small carry outs under reported on the DCA website.

CVS on Euclid is now open, I was in there last night

I went to CVS this morning and it was still closed so I walked to the other one at Rockwell.  I couldn't tell if they were working on the inside... Heinen's had workers in and out.  Geiger's seemed quiet today from what I could tell.

By the sound of that, Heinen's is coming back but Geiger's probably isn't. That's probably not surprising.

I hope Geigers will come back, and I appreciate that they took a chance on downtown in the first place. But let’s be honest, the market downtown for a City Target is VASTLY larger than for Geigers.... to say if Geigers goes all retail is hopeless is totally inaccurate.

I think Geigers was I trouble before COVID.

When you've witnessed retail pack up time and time again and downtown have numerous "revitalizations" only to be blighted shortly after, it's not really trolling anymore

There have been several large chains sniffing around downtown. Target is one of them. But look for them to open in downtown Pittsburgh and Kansas City first.

For the life of me, I don't know how Geigers lasted as long as it has.  I'm assuming you can only sell so many $400 Patagonia vest.  As for Heinens, that would be devastating.  This is where the city leadership needs to step in and help.  If you want an active and walkable urban core, we need a grocery store

I imagine COViD has put those plans on hold.

It has to do with the nature of purchasing clothes. Comparison shopping vs convenience shopping. Nobody is going to come downtown to purchase clothing unless there were many options to do so. Clothing stores rely on shoppers from a far larger radius than do grocery stores.

Are people really worried about Heinen's?  I never took this damage as a possible the end to the store.  Its the one place that was consistently busy at almost all hours even throughout the pandemic... with the population continuing to grow including several hundred more residents right across the street I wouldn't think this would suddenly put things to a stop for them.

Given their substantial investment in the store and their success, it's unlikely this will be more than an inconvenience for them. People are anxious as hell right now though. And I'll certainly be breathing a sigh of relief when they reopen.

I was talking to some of the Yours Truly staff......Heinens employees got an email that they will be closed for an "extended period of time".  And also, Yours Truly is no longer open for dinner, closing at 6pm.  (hopefully that changes when Playhouse starts shows up again)

Its all temporary and for cost savings as we get through this mess. Once Playhouse, offices, and new apartments open. it will get back to normal.

Yeah, I've heard from people in the know that this will likely take them to a re-opening date between July 4 and Labor Day

"after summer" seemed to be the consensus.  So Labor Day makes sense.....fingers crossed

I wonder why the long closure?  I’m guessing it’s due to the decreased revenue from the lunch crowd.

guess I’ll be getting my groceries somewhere else this summer....

An update. It doesn’t sound too ominous to me, I think they’re being cautious and careful. I worked at Heinen’s for five years when I first moved to Ohio- I’ll see if I can find out anything further from my old coworkers.

Heinen's downtown Cleveland store to reopen by August

According to a source close to the situation but was not authorized to speak publicly about the matter, Heinen's downtown Cleveland grocery store will reopen in four to eight weeks.

Rumors have swirled since the nationwide riots and looting on May 30 forced the closure of the full-service downtown grocer. The store suffered modest damage and theft of merchandise from the first floor only. Some downtown residents feared the store would not reopen.

Thank you as always @KJP

Great to hear.  Though I will miss the convenience of being just a few steps away from Heinen's for the time being, I am actually excited to see the store take advantage of this opportunity to adapt to change and continue to improve.  Looking forward to seeing what they do and will be welcoming them back on opening day.

Good to hear they'll be reopening sooner than later, but when KJP says "good news" I've learned to expect a skyscraper!  Come on, Heinen's, it's time for that 50 story iconic HQ in Downtown!

But that would be off-topic here ?

The situation seems to me a lot like our fire six years ago.

We got back most of the parts we were working on at the time.

What we lost out on was the stuff 1-2 years down the road.

I suspect that's what we are going to see here.  The companies who already have a physical presence will stick around.

It's the developmental stuff that needs reassurance.

I'm cool with Target completely ironing out their stores in downtown cores before moving to Cleveland (I think it's safe to assume we'd eventually get a downtown location). Not that it wouldn't do well right off the bat, but eh, if it gets a longterm store here, I'll wait (granted I don't live downtown so I'm in a different situation than someone who's carless and needs to try and get to Steelyard via transit in a reasonable time frame....)

Euclid Glass probably having a record day today. Geigers, Rise Nation, that men’s clothing store that thinks it’s still 1982, half of the Halle, the new Jerk chicken place next to the City Club, The Schofield and, I think, CVS all re-plated today.

EDIT. On closer inspection, not Jerk Chicken or CVS. My eyes are getting old.

Colossal Cupcakes will reopen in late August and interestingly she is opening a second location in the AECOM building on E. 9th and St. Clair- I’m assuming in one of the empty retail spots on the E. 9th side. It will be interesting to see how that spot does. In normal times you have quite a few employees plus pedestrian traffic to and from North Coast Harbor. It will be nice to finally see at least ONE of the many empty storefronts on E. 9th filled

I will recommend the cupcake shake to anyone and everyone I meet.

Cupcake shakes are amazing! For some reason, any time i recommend them to someone, they make a face like I told them to have a dog food shake. I mean, what is not to like about cupcakes and ice cream?

^ I believe Colossal Cupcakes is also opening a location in North Olmsted.

BTW - CVS got new glass yesterday. It’s amazing how much better the store feels inside without all the branding decal crap covering the windows. I’m sure they’ll redo that as well though.

My friends had them cater dessert at their wedding.  It was really good.

Four new tenants are set for downtown

K&D Group, the Willoughby-based real estate company, announced Friday, June 19, that it has inked four leases for retail and office space at its downtown Cleveland properties.

Two of the leases fill empties at Residences at 668, occupying the former Hodge's Restaurant and Titan's Gym, on Euclid and Prospect Avenue sides of the building, respectively.

No sweeter than a regular milkshake. You should give one a try when they reopen. Just don’t let Wilford Brimley catch you with it...

Who are taking the other two leases and in what buildings downtown?

Per the article....

Clearsulting is coming from Ohio City to the Keith Building.

Self-Made Menswear has taken a space on the second floor of the Leader building.

I wasn't sure if I should put this in the May Company building development thread, or here. So I flipped a coin and put it here....

Grow with Google is a training program. Apparently there is one offered in that building... https://grow.google/about/

It's possible that the cling-on is a remnant of the grow with google event held in that space in 2018 - https://www.tri-c.edu/news-and-events/news/grow-with-google-national-tour-headed-to-tri-c.html

^ Sad to see because that’s a beautiful store. Brooks Brothers are up for sale and in serious trouble though.

i used to walk around the store at lunch just to look at it, not the clothing. Its a great space - hopefully it gets filled in quickly.

i need to get a new brooks searsucker suit and boater for saratoga horse racing season before they go under!

Kind of sad, as it was one of the last holdouts. But inevitable I suppose given the broader state of the company. I always felt TowerCity did nothing to promote it- no signage outside or anything that would lead people to go inside to shop. It was a beautiful store. I hope that space can become something else... if anything ever happens to TowerCity/CityBlock. Not sure how confident I am in the mystery plans but I’m staying hopeful.
