  • I got some news from Heinen's. I'll have an article tonight after I get back from taking my kid to sports training in Rocky River. It's good news.

Prior to that the only Horne's in Ohio was location at Randall Park Mall.

There were more Ohio locations, one in Youngstown (Southern Park), several other Cleveland locations (Westgate?) as well.

Hey, does anyone know where you can get narrow ties around here? I'm not looking for ridiculously skinny an indie band, but something a bit more narrow than the average tie you come across at TJ Maxx/Filene's Basement. Thanks!

^Ebay

Just buy a fat tie and some scissors.

Check out the basement of Flower Child or the ground floor entrance of Chelsea's ... If you're not a fan of the vintage fab look, you'll have to dig through a lot of 60s and 70s designs. But I have found skinny ties with tame designs in both stores and usually at a fraction of the price of a new tie ($10-ish).

Has anyone been to M Lang (Euclid & E13th?) for suits? I got a shirt there once, seemed like a decent place.

Didn't want to start a whole new thread for this. Does anyone know of a good tailor or person to do alterations in the vicinity of Lakewood, the west border of Cleveland? I have two jackets that need to have the sleeves taken up a bit, and I don't know where to go. Thanks!

Do a Google search using these search terms: "tailor, Lakewood, Ohio" and you'll come up with a bunch of options. Here's a short list I found among those options.....

re the o'neills discussion.

the very first suburban may company store was built at the 'sheffield shopping center' in lorain in 1953. ssc was one of those classic early shopping center plazas, with an anchor dept store (which was originally o'neills, later may), a string of outdoor shops under under a covered walkway, a courtyard and a sea of parking around it. very jet age styling.

sadly, most of the shops were downtown lorain shops, which moved out there "en masse" --- and that was the end of the formerly bustling broadway shopping era in downtown lorain.

later on in the 1960's of course the new local mall, the midway mall, almost killed ssc, but it hung on and still exists, although it has been rebuilt many times. the anchor dept store left in 1990.

i went to apples grocery there when i visited last summer and i could not even recognize it anymore.

here's a wiki link to may co history:

Thanks, KJP. I was just curious if anyone had a recommendation. But I'll check out European Tailors.

I went in there a couple times when shopping for a suit for my wedding.  The guy I talked with was nice and helpful (even set me up with a beer), but I ended up not liking the styles that they had.  It was slim pickings in the petite department (I'm 5'9" and slim).  I found what I was looking for at both Brooks Brothers (Tower City) and Jay Vee (West 9th).  Jay Vee ended up being much more affordable and we got a great deal on 5 suits for the wedding.

*Ahem*... if it's a clothing question, you really should be asking "my people" (no offense to you hets, but leave this stuff to us ;-) ). I rarely wear suits but I can check with my partner and see who he'd recommend.

I would consider your recommendation if I wanted to end up dressing like "your people." Just because I wear Fruit of the Loom doesn't mean I wan't to be a Fruit of the Loom! runaway.gif

*scowl*... j/k, that was actually a good one!

But honey, the last thing "my people" would ever want is for "your people" to dress just like us (despite Carson from Queer Eye - he's given us a bad name) and we know you feel the same way. Thus, those decisions are better left to us :-D

Thank you very much MayDay.  I second that!

Map Boy (now that you're married with a kid on the way, maybe you should be know as Map Man  :? ) no straight man should ever...eva...refer to themself as "petite".  My people don't even use that word.

FOTL....the horror.  A few fashion tips from "my people" will help you meet & keep a woman.

Too add to that.  Ms. Carson is more annoying in real life!  She's like a faulty clone of Charles Nelson Riley in stereo.

"no straight man should ever...eva...refer to themself as "petite".  My people don't even use that word."

I'm 5'9" and I wish I could refer to myself as "petite" but that's another story.

Honey, you know after '02 we tossed "petite" aside for "svelte"!  and don't you dare bring up the "w" word!

All I know is, I bought a jacket at the Gap once, took it too someone to do alterations and when I got it back, they jacked up the buttons on the sleeve! Lucky for them I got a sweet deal because my sister worked there, but I don't want these getting screwed up!

^I find Gap's shirts to be too plain. They don't seem very innovative. Im sure its good if you just want a "traditional" look. I only have a bunch of Gap stuff because I got a 30% discount there.

MTS--what's wrong with Express-men?!

MTS--what's wrong with Express-men?!

I've gone into a couple of their stores to examined their items.  I found them cheap and poorly made, for my taste.  My assistant bought a shirt there, dry cleaned it and now it doesn't fit.  I will never buy an item from that store.

WELL.... Personally, I mix and match where I purchase things from. For the past few years, Gap hasn't been very interesting to me, but I do go there for staples like white button-ups and jeans. Got a new pair of jeans there last week, and they're great. The jacket I got was a casual blazer.

I have purchased a number of items at Express, and they have held up fine -- these include blazers, a shirt and pants. I haven't liked their offerings during the past year, though, so I only look in when I'm around. I also shop at H&M on occasion, but I'm phasing that store out just because the quality is so poor and the styles are getting to look a little too weird. I also didn't like how I purchased a sweater in a NYC location in March and last week there were like 20 of them on the sale rack.

I like sticking with a traditional look with interesting details like socks, pocket squares, ties, etc. I'm not really into the super flamboyant stuff, such as is at Style Lounge in the WHD.

sadder thing is when they first came out with mens it was good stuff. unfortunately, it was sort of a trial run for awhile and went away. then when they came back again with mens stuff it was the cheap junk you are referring to. maybe its improved lately as jamiec says, i dk i havent been in there in a long time, i'll take his word for it. i gave up on express.

i got a few short sleeve shirts from 'backer' this summer. i really like them and have gotten compliments (not the youthful ones you mostly see on the website, they have some groovy, but more standard versions too). so thats all i got, that was my big fashion find of the summer.

Thats my boy!

I bought a suit there a couple years ago. Unfortunately, the lining started to unravel on me a couple months after I bought it, and started "shining up" about 6 months in. I think he's had to cheapen up the quality of his suits over the years to stay competitive. It's a shame, as he seems like a nice guy, he's an independent purveyor (a rareity these days) and was a major proponent for the downtown retail alliance thingamajig they tried a few years ago.

If you go, and if you're able - stop in at Trinity Cathedral next door - absolutely gorgeous.

Trinity Commons shops in Cleveland hold sidewalk sale to make the point they are still open

Hours: 10:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. today; 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday.

Yes, the shops at Trinity Commons are open.

They have been all year, though Euclid Avenue construction in front of the area has led many shoppers to assume otherwise.

But now the work is done, and the stores are holding a sale on their brand new sidewalk to celebrate -- and to remind shoppers their doors are open.

OK, PD, we get it. Major road construction projects hurt businesses. That's life, but it's not news.

Tower City Center to keep out minors unaccompanied by adult

New restrictions target unaccompanied minors

Thursday, October 11, 2007

Zachary Lewis Plain Dealer Reporter

If you're underage and like to kill time at Tower City Center, it's time to find a new hangout.

Starting next month, the downtown mall will enact a new "Parental Involvement Program" to keep out youths under 18 who aren't accompanied by an adult and aren't heading to a game, movie, concert or RTA train.

oh no!

The city is going to have to find a new "babysitter"!

now if only they could upgrade their collection of stores!

If this puts a lid on the shoplifting, fights, and swearing that comes with the groups of teenagers, than maybe they will be able to lure back shoppers with money and then upgrade their collection of stores.

Hallelujah.

They don't even have the Gap right now. If they could lure those types of stores back, I'll be there on my lunch break. It's easier to walk a few blocks than to drive to Westlake.

There are only 3 things that I miss about living in Chicago:

1.  Friends

2.  Shopping downtown--real shopping downtown.  Hopefully our day in Cleveland will come soon...

3.  Bongo Room

Last holiday season at Tower City, my brother and I were waiting outside a card shop for my mother to finish shopping, and within 2 minutes a security gaurd approached us and told us to move along.  Made me feel like spending more time and money there.

Tower City is not the first mall to institute a policy like the “Parental Involvement Program.”

Other Northeast Ohio malls, including Parmatown and Randall Park, ban patrons from hanging out in groups of more than three or four to avoid intimidating customers.

Hmmm....need I even say anything.

Tower City searches for a way to regain its vibrance

WHAT'S NEXT FOR TOWER CITY?

Sunday, October 14, 2007

Peter KrousePlain Dealer Reporter

Tower City Center hopes to boost its retail sales by shooing away loitering teenagers, but analysts say it will take more than better security to energize the downtown mall.

Yet nobody is predicting the demise of the 100-tenant shopping center in the heart of Cleveland's office and enter tainment districts.

"....making the controversial decision to ban unaccompanied youths under 18 from the mall during the week and after 2:30 p.m."

To whom is this controversial? When I was a school kid, the corner stores in my suburb on the way home from school all said only two kids could come in at one time. I even got kicked out of one once, and I wasn't even stealing they just thought I was. I hate to sound old here, but a lot of these kids, no matter where they live, are brats. In extremely affluent suburbs, you go into the library and the middle schoolers are running around like monkeys in a cage at the zoo, disturbing everyone and swearing. For some reason, the management doesn't tell them to shut their spoiled @sses up!

Anyway, I found this article pretty unenlightening.

I noticed those two lists in the paper this morn. Interesting that the list of stores in the present day is longer than the list from 1990.

lots of white people in that picture

lots of white people in that picture

The picture is so pixelated, how can you tell?

They are. Before learning Adobe programs, I was the MS Paint master and I know rasterized white people when I see them!

I noticed those two lists in the paper this morn. Interesting that the list of stores in the present day is longer than the list from 1990.

There are lots of stores missing on the 1990 list. I wonder why they were excluded? I remember The Warner Bros Store, Calvin Klein, The Museum Store, just to name a few.

Honestly, I wish they would tear down Tower City. Or the Galleria. Or both. I friggin hate shopping malls.

And he doesn’t blame Tower City’s troubles on the decisions of owner Forest City. “In fact, I would probably say they’ve gone way out of their way, being a Cleveland company, to make this mall successful,” he said.

completely clueless, ftw!

Higbee's is also missing from the list...and some others that I think were original... Benetton, Nature Company, Barney's NY, Record Town and Body Shop.
