September 26, 200618 yr Well Von Maur isn't bad (between Macy's and Nordstrom) and besides what else is down there these days (in terms of department stores)? I'm saying he should court Von Maur as a start since they are interested, but just as a stepping stone to better retail like the upscale designer boutiques and Neiman Marcus or Bloomingdales.A department store like that could go a long way to anchor any new retail developments in downtown.
September 27, 200618 yr i think cleveland needs more stores like target, best buy etc. in the city. im not talkin about wal mart big stores or more steelyard commons, but urban stores built at street level. this has been done in other cities and is lacking in cleveland, where all those types of stores are waaaaaay out in the burbs.
September 27, 200618 yr ^yeah we definitely need those types in Cleveland in a true urban setting. I hope the Case development in University Circle will cover at least a nice two story bookstore, that also sells DVD's and music.

This is an interesting idea. Really, BB and Target are primarily suburban stores. So while they do have urban locations, those are exceptions to the rule, I would think. I'd be curious to know how many people would need to live downtown before a Target store or something of that nature would be interested in locating itself downtown. I would assume with the area saturation, it'd need to be pretty high....What, like 50,000 people at least? Whatever happens in downtown Cleveland is going to have to be more modest. Have you ever looked at many of the vacant storefronts downtown? Their on-street frontage is miniscule. In order for a modern retailer to do anything with most of the retail locations, especially on E.9 or Euclid, they'd have to rip the first-floor facades off and knock down walls. The Gap on Main Street in Hudson has bigger windows and more street space than pretty much any location in downtown Cleveland.
September 27, 200618 yr That's an important point, jamiec. As for the market demand needed to get Target in pocket, someone better tell Stark, because he believes they can make it downtown (once his development and the others are in place). September 27, 200618 yr I heard a couple years ago that Target actually was considering a prime downtown space. Of particular interest to me, they had an urban model that would couple their traditional lines with homegrown products, i.e. incorporating local artists' work into their small home furnishings (wall art, lamps, etc.). I'm not exactly sure how strong their interest ever was ... whether the interest was actually coming primarily from Target or if certain city leaders were pushing the idea. But obviously that didn't work out, and someone else is slated to use the space that was initially being scoped out on their behalf.
September 27, 200618 yr I heard about that too. I believe CSU was involved in the planning. It was supposed to be in the Warehouse District, I think, but it fell through probably because of a lack of site control or financing. Stark's big enough to overcome both those obstacles, I would hope.
September 27, 200618 yr I initially heard talk of the Higbee building; that was right about the time that Forest City was really bemoaning its vacancy there and right before GCP and CVB signed on to take the space.
September 27, 200618 yr It is Federated's policy to only operate downtown stores in the largest metro markets. Cleveland does not fit with their policy. Columbus has a downtown store because they inherited it from May. It remains to be seen how long the store in columbus stays open since it does not necessarily fit with their corporate policy. Cinci will have a store as long as it remains a HQ city. It goes with the priviledge of having the corporate parent in town. However, it is interesting to note that the flagship Macy's in Cinci is not downtown but rather in Kenwood. Macy's had an ad in today's Washington Post about their expansion around the country. Their flagship stores, according to the ad, were in New York, San Francisco, Minneapolis and Atlanta. No mention of Cincy.

September 28, 200618 yr The "flagship" store is in Kenwood, not downtown. They are meaning local-only "flagship." I'm sure Cleveland's "flagship" will be at Beachwood or Columbus' will be at Polaris or Easton. And fyi, there are flagship stores in cities that aren't downtown as well, such as Lennox Square in Atlanta and Beverly Hills, which is not near downtown Los Angeles. September 28, 200618 yr Retailers do that all the time. The term "flagship" generally refers to the largest store in the market. The DC Macy's flagship is the Metro Center store, which was recently Hechts, although this store is not one of their "national" flagship stores. It's just larger than any of the other stores in the DC area. I worked on a store for Polo Ralph Lauren in Chevy Chase, Maryland, which was their DC flagship, although it was most definitely not THE flagship in Manhattan.

September 29, 200618 yr Now I'm really confused. How can Cincinnati have the privilige of having a flagship store because Federated is HQ'd there, if every city from Akron to Albequerque now has a flagship Macy's? Mind you, not a 'flagship' Macy's, but a flagship Macy's. What's the privilige? I think the orginial post meant that Cincy had a 'flagship' Macy's? Am I wrong? Jesus, maybe this I why I shop at K-Mart. I don't think too many cities tout their flagship or 'flagship' K-Mart that much. ;)

Ah yes, Chevy Chase....always catering to those middle class folk. Only a matter of time before they put gates up on Connecticut Ave. to keep the 'riff-raff' out. If you do happen be in the the DC area, I recommend the Annandale K-Mart. Hot Korean babes galore, and no pretentiousness at all. Of course I am from Parma. :)

October 18, 200618 yr This was mentioned on the random cleveland developments thread, but the porn shop on W.9th appears to be closing. It will reopen as the Style Lounge of Premium Denim. Also in regards to Warehouse District retail, I believe that Nabici Collection is closed on W.9th and the space was taken over by the newer Suite Life boutique next door. Nabici is moving from their Beachwood location to Eton and openning an e-commerce website that is overdue by a month according to the website.
October 18, 200618 yr ^Any more it's probably a combination of the two - a concept that I don't care for. If I'm shelling out good $$$ for a decent pair of jeans, I don't need 1. attitude from the minimum wage twit behind the counter and 2. a perforated eardrum from the pounding music. I've also noticed these places tend to mix up the mens and womens clothing - not.cool.at.all. clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram

October 18, 200618 yr What the heck is the Style Lounge of Premium Denim? A club or a jeans store? I've decided to open up my own little mini-mart in Ohio City. I'm gonna call it the Style Lounge of Premium Chips and Pop. Its a lifestyle that I'll be selling.

Filenes in the 'burbs -- What a joke!
October 18, 200618 yr Regarding "SexyBack" - I find it disturbing that today's kids apparently don't know musical composition. I mean, do people really need to be told "Take it to the chorus" and "Take to the bridge"? clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram

October 18, 200618 yr okay, the store concept aside. is it not better that we see a denim store rather than a porn shop? nothing against porn or people who like porn, but denim is an upgrade for the neighborhood.

October 18, 200618 yr Is this denim place open yet? I might need to get on the Rapid this weekend to check out the new retail down there. I can't afford any of that boutique stuff though. Put a TJ Maxx down there, and I'm sold ;)
October 18, 200618 yr Shit, you all seem a little too pissed that there is retail opening up downtown. If you don't like that kind of store, don't go to it. Better a store that isn't anywhere else in the area, than a porn store or empty storefront. I'm surprised by your reaction.

October 18, 200618 yr I'm outraged!! haha. I'd just like a store downtown besides the Gap that I can afford to shop at and has stuff I like. I hope they do awesome and make lots of money, but I'd like some options, too.

October 18, 200618 yr "If you don't like that kind of store, don't go to it." Thanks, chief - duly noted. I'm not pissed that there is retail opening up downtown - I never ever said that. I simply made a comment about a certain concept of retail that isn't my cup of tea, but I totally understand that "the kids seem to love it". I'm thrilled it's going there, I'll probably stop in at some point and lord only knows if I see a pair of jeans that I like (preferably $80 or less), I'll likely be a buying customer. I'm simply asking - no matter what store it is, no matter where it's located, for merchandise that's easy to sift through and a simple acknowledgement that I've walked in the door and might have disposable income at hand. I say that from working in retail and knowing what I like when I shop. Others may not care about that stuff - I do. This place may end up being a great funky place for the kids yet provide customer service for people like me - let's hope so. I was talking about current trends in retail. You're the one who is translating that into some anti-downtown retail mentality - not me. clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
