Nice and Finally!!!!!

After originally looking at Brunswick, Cabela's was reportedly in talks for First Interstate's Acacia Country Club development, before that land ended uo a park...

It's ashamed first interstate tried to bluff at those negotiations and got punked by the nature conservancy retail wise.

Avon? Wonderful for a small portion of this area's population. Another argument in favor of the need for regional planning.

Does LV do that because its cheaper to lease from Saks as opposed GGP directly?

The "in store" stores and the Free standing stores are two different beasts.

Most department stores have an in-store retailer that gets "certain" merchandise.  For instance the LV store in Bloomingdale's will not get all or the same merchandise that the LV Flagship store on Fifth Ave., or the LV store in Saks!  The LV stores in Bloomingdale's and Saks will be aimed at their customer.  The will buy select merchandise in specific colors that wont be sold in the others store.

Didn't know it it was better to put this in the retail or restaurant thread.  For the purposes of commercial real estate, I think this would qualify as "retail."  Wonder where these will pop up...

Corner Bakery set to open 13 locations in greater Cleveland market

Corner Bakery Cafe is set to make a big impact in the Cleveland market. The restaurant chain — one firmly in the hot fast-casual market — in the second quarter closed a 13-location deal for the Cleveland market. This marks Corner Bakery Cafe’s first area development agreement in Ohio.

Don’t expect the restaurant chain to slow down, either. The company says that it plans to double its footprint during the next two years.

There are already more than 185 company-owned and franchise Corner Bakery Cafes open. The company also boasts franchise agreements representing commitments for 390 more units.

http://www.rejournals.com/2015/04/21/corner-bakery-set-to-open-13-locations-in-greater-cleveland-market/

A separate article I read indicated Corner Bakery (a longtime Chicagoland favorite) was focused on Beachwood, Solon, Independence, Mentor, Lyndhurst, Mayfield and all the usual suspects, with the first open in 18 months and all within 5-6 years. (Corner Bakeries were originally the casual/quick service side of adjacent Maggiano's full service restaurants and some still exist that way)

My dad is nuts for Corner Bakery; he's very happy about the news.

Hint: after 11am most of them throw in a free bagel or muffin after purchasing one.

No word of a downtown spot for Corner Bakery??

Consider these residential (ie: not daytime workers) populations and % change since 2000:

Beachwood: 12,000 (-2%)

Independence: 7,000 (-1%)

Lyndhurst: 14,000 (-9%)

Mentor: 47,000 (-6%)

Solon: 23,000 (+6%)

Downtown Cleveland: 13,000 (+70%)

Just sayin'...

Still haven't heard if the Beachwood Place expansion plans have shifted, potentially based on the very competitive leasing market (Legacy, Eton, Pinecrest + Beachwood Place all actively adding new retailers) and owner GGP's recent purchase of the adjacent La Place center.. Have noticed that Beachwood Place now includes Williams-Sonoma, Pottery Barn Kids, etc...in the official store lineup of Beachwood Place (location: "outparcel").

What is clear is that Beachwood Place is going through a tough spot on the leasing side right now. At least 8 stores, including Fossil, Lucky Jeans, babe, Delia's, Cache, Wet Seal and Aeropostale all closing in recent months (though on the last 4 stores, all/all/most/many of the stores closed, nationally...) - and Mann Jewelers is still, presumably, closing to move to Moreland Hills, shortly... At least a dozen store spaces are empty or filled with what appear to be (Vollbracht Furs, massage store) short-term filler tenants...

PINK, Bath and Body Works and White Barn candle have all opened new or remodeled stores in recent weeks - with Victoria's Secret undergoing a major remodel on the main floor.

This place needs a shot in the arm...

You'd think some of those super high end stores might look to open at Beachwood. Or do they prefer Eton or the upcoming Pinecrest development?

The place definitely needs something.

I thought the trend among those kinds of stores was away from the enclosed malls.

Downtown Cleveland adds more retailers, apartment dwellers in first quarter

In downtown Cleveland, more places to dine or shop are continuing to revitalize the city. A just-released report from Downtown Cleveland Alliance on first-quarter activity shows that 15 retailers opened or announced commitments to the central business district, and occupancy of apartments has climbed to 97.2% from 94.5% a year ago.

Besides the much-publicized opening of the Heinen's at The 9, eight retailers opened their doors downtown. The report said they are Vibe, A Wellness Studio; Santorini Greek Taverna; Barrio Gateway; Johnnyville Woods; Cleveland Fray; Happy Hour Collection; A Kitchen and Bar; and Equal Exchange Coffee.

Meantime, another six have committed to locations in downtown Cleveland, including Cathy's Creamery, an ice cream shop; Metro, a furniture store; restaurants FlapJacks and Chicago's Home of Chicken and Waffles; and a gift and beauty supplies shop. Starbucks also announced plans to open a seventh downtown location in 2015.

That has been the trend for the last 10-15 years. I've heard reports that trend may be changing. Either way if you have a shopping center that retailers “Have" to be a part of they'll probably come whether the mall is enclosed or inverted. In Cleveland Beachwood is that center, though Eton has been stealing the higher end stores lately.

Beachwood doesn't have the same cache as Lenox Square, Houston or Dallas Galleria, King of Prussia, Aventura or Bal Harbour, or Short Hills Malls.  Beachwoods location hurts them if you can believe it.

Beachwood is not the regional draw those other malls are in there respective cities, although it has "the best" that Ohio can offer.

^ Have you been to the Ross Park mall in Pittsburgh? It's supposed to be their equivalent to Beachwood, but I personally thought it was a step below. It has mid-tier anchors, and the area it's in is full of dingy and outdated stripmalls. I wouldn't say that mall is a regional draw anymore than Beachwood, and yet they have LV, Burberry, Tiffany and Armani.

Beachwood isn't even Riverside or Garden State Plaza

That mall is not comparable to Beachwood.  The anchors are mid level stores.  It's a not on par with Beachwood.

I disagree,  GSP is the beachwood of the Tri State.  GCP and NewPort are not a nice as Short Hills.

Well they need to do something to give it that cache. Before these other centers gut it for all its upper end stores.

Yeah...like move the stores downtown to Euclid and Prospect Aves!

That's my point. Its at least a full step down from Beachwood, and yet they have the high end stores in the mall proper. Regardless of the same brands being offered in the anchors at already (as they are in the anchors at Ross Park), there's an obvious disconnect as to why a mall like Beachwood (and Cleveland as a whole as has been discussed over and over again) doesn't have these stores. Especially when GGP lists it as one of their premier centers. It makes me wonder what exactly the mall management does in their attempts to attract these brands.

Out of self curiosity, what are the top malls or shopping areas in Cleveland?

Beachwood Place and Legacy Village, Eton Collection, and Crocker Park, and the soon to be Pinecrest in Orange.

SouthPark, Great Northern?

SouthPark, Great Northern?

Any list should include Mentor's retail offerings, which of course includes the revitalized, upgraded and expanding Great Lakes Mall, now over 50 years old. Ugh, there's just no love for Lake County on this website --(to quote City of Mentor's own website--admittedly hardly the most impartial source--Mentor ranks 7th in retail sales for Ohio--"Mentor is one great shopping destination — with nearly 600 retail businesses.  In fact, so many people come here to shop, that Mentor ranks 7th in Ohio in total retail sales! (The top ten in order are: Columbus, Cincinnati, Toledo, Cleveland, Akron, Kettering, MENTOR, Dublin, North Olmsted and Cuyahoga Falls.)"

Tops in terms of Luxury are those in OSU87's post. Tops in terms of popularity are the luxury malls mentioned, plus Great Lakes, Great Northern, South park, Summit

Out of self curiosity, what are the top malls or shopping areas in Cleveland?

In what terms?  Total number or stores?  Total number of shops?  Total number of $ spent per square foot?  Total number of visitors per year?

Beachwood Place and Legacy Village, Eton Collection, and Crocker Park, and the soon to be Pinecrest in Orange.

SouthPark, Great Northern?

LUXURY?  What is your definition of "luxury"?  There is nothing "luxury" about SP or GN!  NOTHING!

Beachwood and Eaton are NEOhio's ONLY luxury malls.  If it wasn't for Tiffany and Kilgore Trout, ETON would not be considered "luxury".

Definitely only Beachwood and Eton for luxury, and even then they have some ways to go. Ahh if only I could magically move the Beverly Center here to help fill my retail mall needs, and plop Rodeo Dr downtown for my outdoor shopping... Mmm

"top" shopping centers in terms of total popularity I'd say Beachwood, Crocker and Southpark as our top tier, with Great Northern and Mentor second under that.

BTW, I was shopping at Southpark yesterday and was a bit taken back at the number of vacancies. When I take westside people to Beachwood they like to point out the number of vacancies and say "oh Southpark is nothing like this", but I think it is. I know the old Walking Company space in SP has been vacant over a year now. Maybe theyre just better at hiding it? hmm.

Where the hell did I say they were luxury? Move along...

At Beachwood Place and Skechers Shoes next to Sephora closed they were packing up as I was here

Ever since Westfield sold them, they have struggled and there are a lot of empty stores. I think Penney's is probably going to go away on a national basis pretty soon, and then there will be a really big hole. Meanwhile, Great Northern is flourishing and growing, they're bigger than ever and now have two food courts and continue to expand.

First Cabela's to Avon, now Bass Pro Shops to Boston Heights at I-80 and Route 8

Store already listed on Bass Pro website..  ( Costco building there, too) And was very pleased this retailer "gets" NEO with this comment in a part of the press release: "Boston Heights is part of the larger Cleveland-Akron-Canton area, which has a population in excess of four million, making it the 15th largest Combined Statistical Area (CSA) in the United States."

I hope NEOers remember that ranking/size as the constant "shrinking population" cries continue. Growing or not - this is a major population area/retail market that dwarfs numerous boomtowns getting all the press.

Now maybe IKEA can get that too?!

Now maybe IKEA can get that too?!

Yes, but it's also about demographics and not just size of a metro.  Will the CLE metro consume IKEA?  Of course the data for each retailer is proprietary but it would be interesting to see.

From the press release, "The Bass Pro Shops retail attraction will be the lead tenant in a mixed-use one-million-square-foot Marketplace at Boston Heights development.  The project includes 350,000-sqare-feet of retail. The Bass Pro Shops store will be over 100,000 square feet."

I had never heard of this development before, but apparently it has been in the works since 2006...

More information in this recent Ohio.com article,

http://www.ohio.com/business/katie-byard/bass-pro-shop-will-anchor-huge-marketplace-development-in-boston-heights-1.591618

Hurray, more retail sprawl...

I remember hearing about the development back then. The recession put it on the shelf.

Now maybe IKEA can get that too?!

Considering a bulk of Pitts IKEA earnings come from Ohio pockets I'd say yes
