I remember hearing about the development back then. The recession put it on the shelf.

I was driving up Route 8 today, and it looks like they already started moving dirt for this thing.  The site is huge.

Now maybe IKEA can get that too?!

Yes, but it's also about demographics and not just size of a metro.  Will the CLE metro consume IKEA?  Of course the data for each retailer is proprietary but it would be interesting to see.

Considering a bulk of Pitts IKEA earnings come from Ohio pockets I'd say yes

Is there documentation that lists where this particular IKEAS sales come from?

Someone here who posted that information a while ago I don't remember if it was Eyeheartfood or someone else

I have seen info that 25%+ of PIT Ikea sales come from NEO. I do not recall the source several years ago on this,  though I took it seriously at the time based on the source. I have seen recent published info that 35% of PIT store customers come from 1 hour or more.

Ikea looks for markets with 2MM people  within 40-60 miles. NEO is twice that. New Ikea markets like Kansas City and Columbus just meet that.

I suppose the Pittsburgh store would oppose adding a store here then.  How much internal clout do they have?

Sometimes when a higher up was promoted from a smaller division, they will be a strong partisan for same as they move up.

I did read a recent article that said PIT (opened as 4th U.S. IKEA location about 25 years ago) has been the most challenging location (business-wise) IKEA has seen in the U.S. - with the original product mix not appealing to the PIT shopper (chrome, etc...) The store was actually downsized (hence, the attached Toys-R-Us) at one point due to business falling below expectations and they had to build a satellite outpost across the street to handle certain aspects of the biz (Pick-up?) when business picked up.

CLE certainly adds to the PIT sales.. - but PIT challenges may be holding it back..

But must say, I see this recent Boston Heights Bass Pro/Costco news and wonder if THAT's the best destination location for a local IKEA - between Akron/Canton and CLE and right at the intersection of several major highways.

eyehrtfood[/member]  thanks for the infor

So I would think its safe to say that "bulk" is not appropriate since it doesn't break down sales via zip.

I'm not an IKEA shopper, but I think it could be a retailer for a development in the city proper.

I'm actually planning a trip to CIN just go to to Ikea soon. Many reasons for me that the CIN location is preferable to the PA one, but yeah.

i bet jungle jims is one of them! ha.

How about I've never heard of it and googled it. It's now on the itinerary!

I'm largely terribly unfamiliar with Cincy outside of the elements I've researched for meetings I planned there (aquarium, union station). This could be a nice little trip if I could extend it another day.

I thought Brooklyn Heights was all but confirmed.  If not, that Boston Heights location, at the southern edge of the "borderlands" between Cleveland and Akron's sprawl, might work better.

Did Joe Haden's shoe store close?  I walked by on Friday and the store was empty.  Well, I think it is his store on Prospect  :wtf:

645 Prospect would be the address.

I do not have any specific details on this but I have been told that Geiger's will be opening a downtown store next to the new Heinen's.

Nice!  ....but your username makes me wonder....

That would not surprise me.  In a former life, I worked for an athletic shoe and apparel store that had a location on Euclid Ave. near Playhouse Square.  We did very well.  The lunch time crowd was the best.  Of course this was back in the late 70's.

This would be a bit of a breakthrough if true. I'm somehow totally unfamiliar with Geigers, but based on the website, looks like a great shop.

Wow. That would make you older than me! :)

Geiger's from Lakewood, right?

I do not have any specific details on this but I have been told that Geiger's will be opening a downtown store next to the new Heinen's.

What would be next to Heinen's that could hold a Geiger's?

The Truman Building, which is currently being rehabbed.  The entire first floor is slated for retail.

Yes and here is the Loopnet listing for the Truman which seems to verify the rumor.

Highlights

-2015 grand opening of 29 residnetial units

-Adjacent high end soft goods sporting goods retailer

This is a nice move by a strong and stable local company. Fingers crossed.

Damn I love the sleuths on this site!! :)

Seems risky for a Geigers, but I wish them luck.  I wonder if it will be more clothing than gear?  The Lakewood store is about 50/50 right now.

No.  Selling ski/snowboard gear downtown.  Just seems like a lot of overhead for such a seasonal (and narrow) business in the area.  I'm betting they do mostly clothing/shoes out of this locations, with a sprinkling of outdoors gear.

Sprinkling or sampling -- They could offer pickup for larger items at their Lakewood or Chagrin Falls locations for those that work downtown but live in the burbs.  It also becomes a pickup location for those folks living downtown that want to order from their web site and avoid shipping charges.  I think  this is a good fit and it meets many of the needs that some have expressed on this forum.

Chagrin Falls store HAS ski equipment, etc.. but entire main floor is all clothing and shoes (Patagonia, Barbour, Sorel, Keen, etc...).I've never even been up or down to non-clothes areas..

I agree with all--I'm not downing them or the store at all.  I shop at the Lakewood store all the time--great people and products.  Just wishing them well in this endeavor!

How do you know that they would even sell that product downtown?  Most stores have a "merchandiser" and "buyer" or "buyers" that buy for a particular location.  I don't see why ski equipment or snow boards would not sell downtown.  Just like I don't see why Yoga pants would.  There are plenty of urban sports stores.  Being first to market they will know what downtown shoppers want and need.

I still don't understand why we always look at the negative, FIRST.  There are so many positives to a retail establishment like this, opening in downtown.  This increases options for downtown residential shoppers, office workers and students.  This could be the equivalent to Paragon near Union Square in NYC.

Perhaps you should read my comments.  I'm not being negative, only questioning if they are altering their current business model.  Snowboards are not a high volume item, in Cleveland, Union Square, or even in Denver!

In my humble opinion, Geigers is the perfect type of retailer to open downtown.  They are local with history and a recognizable brand name.  Since they are small they can be fleet a foot to make changes.  They won't get bogged down in the cookie-cutter mentality of the larger chain stores where there are set planograms and sales that may not make sense in every location.  What they carry in the downtown store may have lots of trial and error and that is going to have to be part of their business plan.  Gee, sounds a lot like Heinens.

I like it! I would think of all these local stores continue opening downtown and are successful, it can only help the national brands decide on downtown

Geiger's to Open Downtown Cleveland Storefront

Geiger's, the Lakewood-based clothing and sporting goods store, announced today its plans to open a downtown Cleveland storefront later this year.

The new digs will live at 1020 Euclid Ave., directly east of Heinen's.

“We look forward to serving downtown residents, visitors and workers and to be part of the rebirth of our city," co-owner Gordon Geiger said in a press release

at beachwood place, that vollbracht furs moving up front where Skechers used to be, also Cheryl and co. Closed up front. The walking company moving right next to Nordstrom on lower wing, that will leave the previously closed fossil, the current walking co and vollbracht furs all open next to each other in lower level Nordstrom wing.... Also in upper wing of Nordstrom next to Buckle,  Daniel Rizotto Milano opening soon.

My friend works in the Beachwood Mall and they send out notices to all of the stores showing which stores will be closing, moving, etc. Word is that the mall has actually been forcing a lot of the recently closed stores out by not renewing their leases. I'm hoping they have some big plans in mind?

I was wondering that.... Also in the upper Dillard's wing looks like a new finish line opening up and whatever store was next to it closed.

Im a little concerned about this...only because Dredgers Union is still in my head.  Heinens was considered a risk, and People NEED food.  I love that they are trying, but they will have to adjust to the market and get people down in their store

True, but the profit margins in retail are higher than those from grocery stores and the amount they would need to spend on labor is also considerably less than Heinen's.

Apparently the Chagrin Geiger's has bikes and bike accessories/clothes.  I bet that will sell well Downtown.

The sheer number of recent Beachwood Place store closings, coupled with some long term vacancies in the Saks wing, their known expansion plans on that side of mall, and the increasing competition among BP, Legacy, Eton and Pinecrest. would either seem to spell the end of Beachwood Place as the premier regional mall, or a more orchestrated plan to rid the center of certain tenants, open up key spaces and add in some key retailers. I believe in the latter...

However, as most Beachwood Place type tenants are already in the market or coming, they either have to be moving up a step (Burberry, etc...) or down a step (think Great Northern or SouthPark teen shops) with the next additions.

With that said, what other major metro has FOUR (or even three) upscale suburban shopping centers of this type such close proximity... 5-10 minutes apart?

Great news the Geiger's has been confirmed! And nice work to whoever that was who broke the rumor up thread.

Regarding BW, I use to work for the Walking Company there until about a year and a half ago, and they had been trying to move since even before I left. The spot by Nordstrom was not the first choice, and it took alot of working with the mall and delays before that spot was agreed upon. I think the mall has something planned and is freeing up larger spots to be combined.

I certainly hope too it's the Burberry Tory Burch Vineyard Vines Type too, maybe Lucy, would love a soft surroundings like opened at Crocker. If that guy is right about GGP forcing stores out I would think that too as eyehrtfood says means the more upscale to go with Kate Spade and Michael Kors.

Also over at legacy a former claddaughs employee told me the rent they asked for jumped to 40,000 a month obviously forcing them out for capital grille.

I think they are planning on moving up. Its hard to believe a mall with the only Saks and Nordstrom for hundreds of miles can't keep its tenants. It will be interesting to see if some of the mid tier retailers move over to Legacy Village if Beachwood fills with super upscale retailers.

The big, annual retail leasing convention was held in Las Vegas last week... (this likely would have been the official coming out party for nuCLEus, too..) so wouldn't be surprised to start hearing some firmer leasing news for various centers in the coming weeks...
