January 30, 200718 yr If you want to see it in person there's an Underground Station at Richmond. Not sure if that's the only store in the area so far.
January 31, 200718 yr ARTS&LIFE: Menswear shopping scene alive downtown By Roxanne Washington Plain Dealer Reporter So our downtown department stores are lost to legend, and Tower City Center and the Galleria at Erieview are not what they used to be. Does that mean the words “Cleveland” and “retail haven” no longer belong in the same sentence? That’s just the skeptics talking. More at cleveland.com http://www.cleveland.com
January 31, 200718 yr Complaints about inadequate parking, pricey parking and crime persist. “It’s been very difficult,” says Bob Genovese, co-owner of Christopher’s. “The city of Cleveland’s parking issue has not helped. I myself get plenty of tickets. Like Brooks, a few years back, Genovese and his partner made a downsizing move to save their business. All of which begs the questions, in a metropolitan area where it’s not unusual to hear people boast about how long it’s been since they ventured downtown, why are these menswear retailers hanging around? ARGH!!!!! WTF!!!! edit: Woah, the girl who is opening the new store is only 22 and has a liquor license to boot? I want to get over there and check it out.
January 31, 200718 yr Still, a decent article. Mostly upbeat and informative. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
January 31, 200718 yr I get worked up easy, haha. But, seriously, I need to check out some of these places. I want to support them! My only issue is, a lot of the local menswear shops sell stuff more at my dad's demographic than me, in terms of style and pricing.
January 31, 200718 yr Nice to see a positive article about Downtown retail! Here's some more: Tower City filling gap: 4 tenants on the way Wednesday, January 31, 2007 Janet H. Cho Plain Dealer Reporter Tower City Center is losing one longtime tenant and gaining four others in coming months. Forever 21, a Los Angeles-based retailer that caters to teenagers and young women, will move into the space on the food court level that The Gap vacated Friday when its lease was up. Forever 21, which sells inexpensive, trendy outfits, jewelry and accessories, will open in the spring, said Diane Thomas, senior marketing coordinator at Tower City. January 31, 200718 yr Rainbows coming! The last time that I was in NYC, I remembered seeing these stores on just about every corner of New York.
January 31, 200718 yr And you went into EVERY one of them! I just saw the print edition of the "Tailored" article and must give many props to the PD for this colorful and informative piece. There are a number of nice shots of the featured retailers, as well as a handy map of Downtown with 14 clothiers plotted on it. Great job Roxanne Washington!
January 31, 200718 yr In March, Tower City will welcome Bice Ristorante, a family-owned chain of upscale Italian restaurants, to the third-floor space formerly occupied by Century, next to the Ritz-Carlton Cleveland. [ps: I thought Bice was to have a sidewalk presence...don't know where I got that from] That would have been nice. I wonder how much business they're going to attract in that location, other than from hotel guests.

I wonder how much business they're going to attract in that location, other than from hotel guests. well, it is the same space as the former restaurant, which had windows overlooking prospect (or at least the awnings on prospect by the ritz were branded with the restaurant name). iirc, there would be access from both TC/ritz area as well as the street
January 31, 200718 yr I imagine Bice will attract the higher ups from Sherwin Williams, Forest City and Quicken, all right around there.. Althought I'm still surprised Castaldi's didn't make it, so who knows. Anyway, this is all fantastic news.
February 1, 200718 yr i know bice as a very nice restaurant in ny. i wish it was a local instead, but it should be a very nice fit. if you want you can check out the menu here -- it aint cheap! http://www.menupages.com/restaurantDetails.asp?areaId=8&restaurantId=3476

February 3, 200718 yr shopping in downtown cleveland just sucks. It's really painful. I sincerely hope for a turn around, there needs to be a lot of accomping retail with the amount of new housing going up. The irony about this is that beachwood, our best mall, still only rates a B-, if compared to other "upscale" malls in major cities.
February 4, 200718 yr I imagine Bice will attract the higher ups from Sherwin Williams, Forest City and Quicken, all right around there.. Althought I'm still surprised Castaldi's didn't make it, so who knows. Anyway, this is all fantastic news. Clevelanders are pretty good foodies, if a restaurant isn't doing good people wont eat there, no matter how much money you spend. If the product is crap, who will pay to eat there? Not just corporate types will dine there. Its an ok restaurant chain, the prices are reasonable and there are only 6 or 7 locations so this is good for Cleveland.
February 5, 200718 yr ^ I completely agree with you - MTS. In my opinion a lot of restaurants and retailers want to blame the market for their failings, rather than take responsiblity and work hard to improve their product. Castaldi's was mediocre at best. Good restaurants and other small businesses always seem to do well.
February 5, 200718 yr Castaldi's was crap. I ate there once last year. The service was horrendous, the food bland.
February 5, 200718 yr Castaldi's was crap. I ate there once last year. The service was horrendous, the food bland. ditto, tried it once, cried, left to never come back again. has anyone ever been more than once?
February 5, 200718 yr once for me as well. very strange experience that the server blamed on the "owner being at the browns game." ??
February 5, 200718 yr I agree the service was atrocious.. The food, eh. But the place was packed every time I walked by.

February 9, 200718 yr Walked by the new Style Lab on W. 9th yesterday and the new marquee for the Adult Mart...loving that block! Also, who knows what's up with the 360 Clothing Studio? It's on the following Landmarks Commission agenda and will be on the next block of W. 9th, south of St. Clair. http://planning.city.cleveland.oh.us/landmark/agenda/photo/020807/index.html I hope no one else posted about this on here, because I couldn't find anything!
February 20, 200718 yr "coming soon" signs are up in the windows of 360 Clothing Studio. It'll be on the west side of W. 9th, just south of St. Clair. This should add nicely to the mix of retail options already on W. 9th, which, when combined with the offices, residences, dining, nightlife, and convenience shopping, is becoming quite the complete street!
February 20, 200718 yr Style Lab? That's open already. Sorry, its been cold, I don't walk very far anymores.
February 23, 200718 yr ""Black people own nothing," said Ali. "We're just slaves. Why don't we have hundreds of black businessmen investing in this neighborhood? We need these empty lots to disappear and businesses to pop up and they need to be African-American-owned." That he doesn't see the irony of his words... clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
February 23, 200718 yr I saw the photo of his store in the PD. This could lead to some problems if certain, ignorant people misconstrue the store owners intention... or at least his implied intention.
February 24, 200718 yr thats the kind of attitude that will keep people from investing in your neighborhood
February 24, 200718 yr thats the kind of attitude that will keep people from investing in your neighborhood Not necessarily. Look at it from the neighborhoods point of view. We have the same issues here in Harlem, most of the Bodega owners don't live in the community or care about the improvement of the community. They are only out to make a buck. Ive continually taken pictures of the bodega employees and called the police on the three Bodegas by me who continually sell tobacco products to minors. Sell single cigs and sell alcohol to minors. What investment to my neighborhood do they have? In black (non hispanic) neighborhoods $1 dollar is made it immediately leaves the neighborhood, compared to a Jewish neighborhood where that dollar hits 14 other businesses; Asian neighborhoods where the dollar hits 8 other businesses or Latin neighborhoods where the dollar hits 5 other businesses. I don't agree with the gentlemans statements, but I understand where he is coming from.
February 24, 200718 yr Has anyone posted yet that the Arhaus Furniture on Old River Road has closed and moved to Brookpark Road in Parma?
February 24, 200718 yr Yes, some guy named B12 posted it today. Sorry, I just got done reading a few the Pope's posts which put me in the "wrong" frame of mind. I hadn't heard about the move. I wonder what will happen to their Flats location? When Arhaus moved their store from Fairview Park to Crocker Park, I interviewed their regional marketing person about how many stores they had. She gave me the number and mentioned that the Flats store was going to continue to be a warehouse outlet-store type concept. Of course, that was several years ago. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
February 26, 200718 yr i like how the last line was dramatically placed: "We need these empty lots to disappear and businesses to pop up and they need to be African-American-owned." yes indeed -- the gauntlet has been thrown. the question is who will pick it up?
February 28, 200718 yr Has anyone posted yet that the Arhaus Furniture on Old River Road has closed and moved to Brookpark Road in Parma? What? I had no idea! Don't they have another more warehouse-y space down in the Flats? This is crappy...
February 28, 200718 yr ^ I think its been closed for a while, but I'm not sure how long. Yeah its a shame about loosing that store, because it was such a cool space. I remember being there with my parents in the early 90s. It would be really cool if they moved their offices and openned a flagship store downtown as a tenant in one of the new projects.
March 6, 200718 yr MIDWAY MALL Dillard's Inc. will soon close its store in Elyria because of poor sales. Dillard's to close Elyria location Tuesday, March 06, 2007 Janet H. Cho Plain Dealer Reporter Dillard's Inc. on Monday told workers at its Westfield Midway store in Elyria that the location will close sometime this spring because of poor sales. Dillard's spokeswoman Julie Bull said the Midway mall store had been underperforming for some time. More at cleveland.com http://www.cleveland.com
March 6, 200718 yr well since the nytimes tower is almost up we are getting news about retail on the ground floor -- its going to be muji aka the japanese ikea, which i have mentioned before. i thought maybe since cinci got the ohioikea stark or tc or somebody can go for muji -- just to be different: 1) Midtown West: As rumored, Muji, known as Japan's version of Ikea, has signed a lease to open a flagship store in the new Renzo Piano-designed New York Times building on Eighth Avenue near the Port Authority this fall. muji english website: http://www.muji.net/eng/ ****this blog had something too: March 5, 2:43 pm Times tower's first retail lease A rendering of the New York Times tower. Japanese clothing and houseware retailer Muji has signed the first lease for retail space at the under-construction New York Times tower. The 5,000-square-foot space will be Muji's first outpost in the United States. The company has 387 stores in Asia and Europe. The Renzo Piano-designed New York Times tower on Eighth Avenue between 40th and 41st streets will have 21,000 square feet of retail space owned by Forest City Ratner, the building's developer. The 52-story skyscraper will be completed in the fall. According to Julie Hendricks, a spokesperson for Forest City Ratner, there is currently a great deal of activity surrounding the building's four other retail spaces. Forest City Ratner declined to provide the terms of the Muji lease. Japanese interior design architect Takashi Sugimoto will design the Muji store. The retailer is known for selling recycled and environmentally friendly goods. Muji was represented by Naomi Okada of the New York City-based Okada International in the lease negotiations, and Forest City Ratner represented itself. TRD
March 7, 200718 yr Not that Mexx is in Ohio or was ever announced to be in Ohio, I know some people put it on a wish list for downtown. Apparently they were operating 11 stores in the US at one point, but downsized to 4 stores which they presently operate. It was reccently announced Mexx will be closing these 4 stores and scrapping the US division.
