Amazon has scaled such that it's nearly impossible for anyone to compete with them on price. The department stores could differentiate with services like this, but the prices would be higher for the same items. I don't think there are enough consumers that value service enough to pay the higher prices.
July 28, 20195 yr As one who sells tens of millions of $ in goods a year to Amazon, the surprise of their "low" pricing is that they normally are matching other, competitive, market-share-seeking retailers on price. If left to their own devices, Amazon would prefer to sell a $50 retail item for $50. But in trying to out-Amazon Amazon, other retailers drop their retails and Amazo matches per corporate policy. In the future you will see more manufacturers giving Amazon some products that are different than what other retailers will have access to (or vice versa), to avoid the race to lowest retail.
July 28, 20195 yr 33 minutes ago, Terdolph said: So why can't the dept stores do something like this and compete w/ Amazon? Their two hopes for survival are 1) exclusive merchandise, which is only possible at low volume/high price levels; or 2) making the shopping experience fun. Option 1) is probably easier, but it means only the Neiman-Marcuses of the country will survive. Remember: It's the Year of the Snake
July 29, 20195 yr I would say some of the big department stores do a good job at competing using the tactics mentioned above. One of the reasons I prefer shopping at Saks is because the sales people know me, know what I like, and are able to help me find things I likely would not have found for myself. Also having access to the pre-sales by having a Saks card, and thus first pick, is pretty great too. While I know not everyone can do their shopping at Saks, I think their business model works. Its certainly a shopping experience I couldn't get with Amazon.
July 29, 20195 yr Sidebar comment just for fun; Although Macy’s has its challenges, one of the reasons it is in better shape than most other departments stores is that it was very early into e-commerce and got it more fully integrated across the business. A major move was being first to figure out how to use its stores as warehouses for online orders and invest in the IT and logistics to make it happen. September 16, 20195 yr Seems like the hipster barbershop, The Refinery, is moving into the former (forget the name) beauty salon on E14th next to the Hanna Theater. They’re already in the 668 building on Euclid, so I imagine this has to be a move rather than a new location. Should also be an upgrade for them as now they have a street presence. The current place is buried in the apartment building and AFAIK, unless you’re a resident of 668 with a key fob, you have to be buzzed in by them which must be limiting to business. September 17, 20195 yr not cle retail, but i notice a big, new trend in nyc beyond pop-up retail shops is turning former larger retail and empty commercial spaces into entertainment businesses -- geared mostly toward tourists, but also towards school kids and locals too. things like instagrammy video experiences, small entertainment museums, etc.. -- they are springing up everywhere out here these days: https://zerospace.co/ https://kgbespionagemuseum.org/ https://newyork.museumofillusions.us/ ^ and etc., etc. -- i thought something small and easily done on a trial or temporary basis like that (as these seem to be) could do also well in downtown cle dead space.

October 1, 20195 yr Quote Heinens and Geiger’s opened up what, 5 years ago downtown on Euclid? They both seem to be doing well. Unsubsidized. Geiger’s has 3 stores, so I can’t imagine the other 2 can absorb the losses from #3. We have a lot of bodies downtown now. Things are different. Tower City opened when literally nobody lived downtown. Tower City is now empty on purpose (CityBlock). Lets get over that whoa is me bullsh*t. Hopefully the new SHW Headquarters will snuff that out. Sorry I don't know how to forum but this was from @marty15 in the sherwin williams topic. Heinens is doing very well of course, pretty easy to see that from the traffic every day. From what they've said, they were kinda taking a risk with this model and it's mostly paid off. They have shuffled around the rotunda stalls a lot (replaced the deli with a hot bar - you can get cold cuts pre-packaged in the coolers). They are more expensive than the suburban stores, but for a downtowner that is fine since they aren't paying for gas to get there. Geiger's I am less sure about. I very rarely see people in there. Their prices are high, even during sales. My guess is that they are trying to tread water until Euclid gets built up more.

The prices should be the same, and if they don't have something specific in stock at one of the stores, they have always called the other 2 locations to see what's available in my experience. The main difference between the stores is that Lakewood and Chagrin have more sports equipment (ski, team sports, etc.) while downtown is almost exclusively apparel + some outdoor accessories.
