^ yeah, it is sad, but with retail so in flux now and with brooks troubles i guess its not unexpected.

i dk what is going to become of beautiful mall settings like tc. how can management possibly even make any plans for the future these days? i hope blockland comes thru as that would bring a lot of activity and probably help guide retail redevelopment in tc a lot.

Microsoft also announced today they will be closing all of their physical stores except for flagship experience destinations in Seattle, NYC, and London. That means an empty storefront in Beachwood Place.

I heard a rumor a couple days ago that Nighttown in Cleveland Heights is closing permanently. I feel like that doesn't make any sense in light of recent comments the owner has made about the nearby Top of the Hill development. But the rumor came from someone who is pretty well connected in real estate circles and that I would think might know...

Anybody able to rule this out? It would be a huge loss.

New York & Co. is closing in Beachwood. Took J.Crews spot and now they are leaving as well. Another vacancy in Beachwood Place.

Does anyone know if the stores that have coming soon in the mall are being worked on btw?

Heard from family friends of the Geigers, they aren’t reopening the downtown location.

As unfortunate as that is I just don’t think it was the right fit. We need something that appeals to a wider audience and budget.

Agreed.  Also heard they opened more out of a sense of civic duty to Cleveland.  They weren’t making money on that store at all and the looting cost them hundreds of thousands of dollars.

New York & Co bankrupt and closing all or most stores. More than just a Beachwood issue.

With that said - Beachwood has issues.

Beachwood is in a transition period, before that shooting. It just isn't going to be the mall it once was ESPECIALLY with Pinecrest stealing its thunder. I commend them for filling their storefronts that have recently become empty so quickly though.

Not sure if its still happening, or long term ams, but earlier this week, for at least for a few days, Saks was closed off to the mall at Beachwood. You could only enter from outside into store. For virus or other..... not a good look.

This.

Apparel is in a very tough spot right now and Geigers was always a weird fit, being basically an outdoor pursuits clothier in an urban downtown. Even people like Filson have a hard time making money in such locations.

I was just at Beachwood Place today. The number of people there seemed about how it was pre-covid, and thankfully just about everyone was wearing a mask (I only noticed one person in Nordstrom that was maskless, though the people he was with had them). The new Carters-Oshkosh store looks to be just about complete. The temporary facade was removed and you could see they were arranging the shelves inside. The other new stores still had the temporary "coming soon" plywood up, so couldn't tell what kind of work was going on. New York and Co was the only store I saw any closing signs for, though I wasn't down the Dillard's wing very far. Saks did still have all but one entrance closed, but they weren't the only store doing that. Zara also had only one entrance open, and all of the stores were limiting occupancy. I just wish Saks had an interior entrance open instead of making people walk around.

I agree with the statement above that Beachwood Place is transitioning. I think we will be seeing more of a mix of upscale and midrange stores now, as the upscale market continues to be spread out between Eton and now Pinecrest. I think they will still be a strong shopping center and a regional draw, just not exactly what it was was before. Beachwood Place is far from dead though.

Coldwater Creek which just reopened at Legacy is closing again as the whole chain is bankrupt again and closing their 13 new brick and mortar stores

Notable in that Legacy also had Z Gallerie leave after bankruptcy maybe 7-8 years ago then re-open and close again 2 years ago when more $ issues corporately.

I've detailed before, but the # of chains that have left Legacy after all or most stores closed natinally probably averages more than 1 a year since its 2003 launch.  Talbot's Men's and Kids, Bombay/Bombay Kids, EXPO, Joseph-Beth, Charming Charlie, Viking Store, Sigrid Olsen, Stir Crazy are just some past tenants that are essentially no longer in biz with stores... there are many more.

Curious - has anyone heard or happen to know anything regarding Heinen's downtown?  KJP reported they would open by August but I have not heard any updates nor seen anything to indicate work is even happening inside.  Granted the windows are still boarded up, so it is hard to tell.

I have a lingering concern that they aren't going to reopen, although I'm not basing that on any actual information.

First Pittsburgh. Next up is Kansas City. Then Cleveland, according to a source.

Downtown Heinen's store reopening delayed

Reopening of the downtown Cleveland Heinen's grocery store is delayed another month from earlier estimates. Previously, sources said the full-service store would open up again by early August. The store closed following the riots that hit numerous cities nationwide, including Cleveland, May 30.

What if people are still mostly

working from home in September? I don’t see what would change from now and then to cause more workers to come back

With the old Carson Pirie Scott and now Kaufmann's, I see a trend!

They're already coming back but slowly. Eventually they will all be back. Working from home doesn't work.

At least you have that beautiful new home to work from. Especially once all the amenity floors get finished up.

COVID-19 smacks Northeast Ohio's already-ailing malls

STAN BULLARD August 09, 2020 04:00 AM

Foot traffic is a key indicator in mall performance, following only sales and rents. Information from Orbital Insight, a geospatial data provider based in Palo Alto, Calif., show how Northeast Ohio's remaining 11 enclosed malls are suffering, even since the Ohio stay-at-home order ended.

Foot traffic at the malls as of July 25 is running 40% below what it was in January, according to Orbital. And that's an improvement from the 85% decline they suffered as Ohio's March shutdown order hit.

Richmond Town Square ranks at the bottom of the region's malls in foot traffic, with just 15,000 visitors last month, Orbital reported, compared to 39,000 in January. The next lowest figure is 32,000 in July at University Square in University Heights, which is at the precipice of a long-planned rejuvenation effort. [...] The region's high flier is Great Lakes Mall in Mentor, which had 208,000 visitors last month, down from 331,000 in January.

Emerick Corsi, the principal of EDC Advisors LLC of Russell, thinks Northeast Ohio will wind up with just three mainstream enclosed malls when the dust settles. Likely survivors he points to are Beachwood Place in Beachwood, Summit Mall in Fairlawn and SouthPark Mall in Strongsville.

Driving through downtown Chagrin Falls it looks like the triangle has taken some retail hits, a couple pretty large.  Joseph Banks is gone as well as the large candy/card/gift shop on the other side of the street.  Also the Chagrin Cake Shop is no more.

kohl's and its non-essential peers got rocked, while home depot and walmart are fine:

The company’s second-quarter report contrasts sharply with the booming sales figures released Tuesday by Home Depot Inc. and Walmart Inc., two massive retailers that were deemed essential and allowed to operate through the pandemic. Kohl’s and its nonessential peers, meanwhile, have struggled to regain sales as shoppers stay home and flock to e-commerce.

Same it’s the worst but I get it, most businesses aren’t bringing people back right now.  I just got word today I am home until Jan.

Damn. I always went to that location to pick up spices. They were definitely a pioneer for national chains in OC. Do they (or did they ever?) have a stand inside the West Side Market too? Or am I confusing this with Campbell's...

WSM has Urban Herbs and Narin Spices (sp?).
