Maybe this is a precursor to the old Fisher's warehouse (2323 Lakeside) becoming apartments.  It's the last cheap area downtown (more or less).

I hope that they will have exceptional ventilation.  Lots of dogs + Indoors (+ summer) = great smelling air...

Along with exceptional liability insurance.  Anyone who's ever been to a dog park know there are varying degrees of dog owner discipline.   I'm sure there will be owners and patrons lawyering up!

and throw in alcohol and the doggie discipline adjusts downward accordingly.

Dog owners getting publicly loaded with their doggies at bark bars...then again, dogs are replacing human companionship so why not go drinking with your best friend as they’re also allowed in hotels and retail establishments and join al fresco dining tables so why not open a specific themed doggie bar. There must be a demand for this, at least initially.

I was there the morning after the riots helping to clean, and members of the family said that then. At the time, I figured it was just emotion getting the best of them.

That's a big loss. Shame of the matter is, Geigers surviving would've made it easier for stores to head to the Euclid Grand.

Room Service is closing their Ohio City location unfortunately.  The public statement vaguely mentioned some other project on the west side taking its place, so fingers crossed it is also in Ohio City and not out in the suburbs.

A lot of Geiger's comments about the closing of the store have seemed sort of cryptic. Obviously, looting, vandalism, and theft took a toll on the business but it seems that ultimate decision to not reopen was based on foot traffic not returning. I mention thus because I'm sure other businesses, who may not have been effected during the riots, might be debating whether to stick around.  I hope that the virus get under control soon and foot traffic returns because things can get much worse for retail, especially downtown.

Very true.  Insurance covers the property damage and inventory loss, but does nothing to replace customers lost to the COVID pandemic.

And to be fair, insurance will not cover all of the losses. But businesses can usually come back from a one time disaster. What they cannot survive through is a long term cash flow problem. I'm hoping that vaccinations ramp up in time to re-establish some retail momentum downtown.

meh. trumpies gonna overstate, but geiger's closure is 95% due to low foot traffic. the better bet is they'll be back sometime post covid.

Exactly this. Had the looting happened when there wasn't a pandemic, they'd have reopened and moved on. I think they've been waiting to see if foot traffic would improve and it hasn't yet.  Therefore, it doesn't make sense to them to spend more money at this location. Hopefully, foot traffic improves soon which will happen when vaccinations increase and workers come back to their office, Playhouse square resumes, etc.

^ its very rough times on businesses so close to the edge and i dk what to say except its terrible. however, in the meantime, moving ahead with rehabbing along euclid, building the new city club apt bldg, maybe starting lumen part 2 hopefully, rta loop study, etc., all these kinds of things are and should be done now in advance of post covid retail returning. better days are on the horizon and hopefully geigers can return.

Record retailer closings are translating into significantly higher shopping center vacancies

Stan Bullard - Feb. 7, 2021

"A preliminary year-end 2020 report by Moodys Analytics REIS put vacancy in the Cleveland Metropolitan Statistical area at 14.4%, compared with 10.5% nationally among the country's 77 largest MSAs. Moodys does not produce regional enclosed mall statistics, but estimates vacancy in the hard-hit property type climbed to 10.5% at the end of 2020 from 9.7% at the end of 2019. Online realty data provider CoStar estimates more than 1 million square feet, a record, of retail space was vacated in the region last year."

The other week, somebody on this forum, in some other thread, stated that the downtown Heinen's could be reopening fully Memorial Day weekend. Today, they have been re-erecting the outdoor seating area, so that would seem to make sense.

EDIT: I can't find the OP anywhere. Maybe I read it someplace else.

It has been posted on Twitter. The patio being installed seems to confirm that. Great news!!

I was in there last night and June 1 is the date!  They even replaced all the lightbulbs around the glass dome!!

I'm going to post this here to keep the Intro thread from getting overwhelmed in retail speculation. Let's keep that nonsense here.....

I saw this on Twitter as well, and I'm trying not to read into it much. Thinking he's just referring to the shops that will eventually open.

It's about Dan Whelan of Harbor Bay Realty (developer of Intro) teasing us about new retailers. And I've been hearing rumblings that downtown Cleveland or nearby is in line for a City Target after KC and Pittsburgh get one.

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

^I never understood the "after KC and Pittsburgh " part of that rumor. Target opens dozens of stores a year, many in urban areas.  Is the idea that these markets are so fringe they need to see proof of concept with one before moving to the next?

I wanted to say this in the Intro thread, but probably best I didn't (and not trying to start the childish arguing here!) but a Starbucks Reserve would be a great addition to it. They're nothing like a normal Starbucks, which would be a waste in that space anyways imo. There's still only 6 locations nationwide, in 3 cities (Seattle, Chicago, NYC). While a still a chain, a Reserve location in OC would be a HUGE win for the neighborhood and certainly draw more people into the area.

I think Nucleus 1.0 was going to have a Starbucks Reserve.

^ starbucks reserve is quite a sight, i have one a block away and they opened yet another two blocks away in the other direction from us, but we don't go in much. for their more unique or unusual items they are expensive. i mean to the point some of it is ridiculous or else really a special occassion type thing. would be cool to have, but i dk how well they would do without a lot of steady tourists.

Lids is opening on the second floor of Beachwood mall right next to the food court. Although Beachwood is straying further and further away from the mall it once was, they are doing a great job keeping it filled with mid range national retailers.

Store rents in Cleveland of $50 a square foot? Believe it

STAN BULLARD July 30, 2021 02:31 PM

For followers of Northeast Ohio shopping centers and rents, David Lukes, the New York City-headquartered CEO of Beachwood-based SITE Centers, dropped a bombshell on the company's second-quarter conference call held Friday, July 30, with investors and analysts: He noted premium rents of $50 a square foot in Cleveland.

Really? Lukes also put it in telling context, citing rents in Boston and Miami of $80 a square foot, par for the spread between the middle of the country and the East Coast.

"I mean, we've hit all-time property level highs in shop leasing in Boston, Miami, Cleveland, and Portland," the Seeking Alpha transcript of the call quotes Lukes as saying. By comparison, the "high-water mark" for shop rent was $40 a square foot.

Saw an article on Facebook saying Beachwood Place is having a jobs fair next week. In the details of which stores are hiring, they listed two new "coming soon":

Windsor - https://www.windsorstore.com/ - website lists Beachwood Place as a future location

So Southern - not sure exactly what this is, but I'm guessing a restaurant?

Also, for those not aware, JD Sports has opened. I know there was some worry on here that the delay from the pandemic had killed the plans, but those have proven unfounded.

It would  be great to see a city Target in Tower City or the Centennial (not sure what the others options could be).  With Bedrock's revised Tower City plans, I'm hoping that's where it lands (mostly because I think it would help generate RTA rides).  Two years ago I went to the city Target in Fenway (Boston) and it was great.  (Although apparently that one is actually bigger than some suburban locations - I think we'd get something smaller.)

Anyway, it was encouraging to see this article from April indicating that Target will be opening a location in downtown Pittsburgh.  Hopefully downtown Cleveland is next!

Target Plans To Bring Some New Life To A Downtown Pittsburgh Landmark

There’s hope that life will soon return to the former Kaufmann’s department store space in downtown Pittsburgh. Since the store closed in 2015, the building’s redevelopment has been plagued with problems and construction delays. But a new Target store, occupying a portion of the former Kaufmann’s store, will provide a much-needed boost to the project and the city’s once-bustling retail district.

Last July, Core Realty, the project developer, announced that Target would open a location within the old Kaufmann’s building. Core has owned the property since 2015, when the realty firm purchased it for $15 million from Macy’s, Kaufmann’s successor.

When is the last time I-71 turned a profit?

Would make a great third anchor to TC (along with the trains and casino). Can't think of anywhere else downtown where one would go, unless part of a new build. I'm imagining how financially dangerous it would be for me if I ever lived above a Target. Good luck to those folks wherever one may end up.

Locating in a new development downtown might also suit them, especially if the terms of the deal were good for them.

Seeds & Sprouts XIX -- Cleveland apartment demand soars, downtown expansions & more

Retail spaces in two new Cleveland buildings gain tenants

Two new buildings that opened in the past year in highly visible locations are gaining ground-floor retail tenants that will likely increase the foot traffic and enhance the vibrancy of those locations.

One retail addition is First National Bank (FNB) of Pennsylvania which is leasing 804 square feet of space in The Lumen apartment tower in downtown's Playhouse Square. The Hermitage, PA-based financial institution is investing $165,000 to remove interior walls and construct a new bank branch, according to a permit application filed yesterday.

Edited by snakebite

But those are three brands not currently in CLE right? So its still an add for the city and I assume, they're working to bring many more to make their concept viable. Once there are a bunch of new shops, some bigger names (target, etc.) may jump in and follow.

I believe those are African-American owned new businesses who are getting a break in rent to help them get started. Hope they have a good location at Tower City otherwise they probably couldn't get a better place from the Witness Security program to go into hiding...

For me, it’s just the juxtaposition, over the course of 18 months, of going from getting ready to welcome Blockland, to…Peach Fuzz. As Pres. Joe would say, God bless ‘em 🤷‍♂️.

I wonder if there is a possibly that Geiger's might be persuaded to return downtown at Tower City?

I don't think there is anything wrong with these businesses necessarily. I just don't think it is press release worthy. These are the same type of retailers that were at TC when Bedrock bought it.
