Two great shows coming up, hope to see you there:

The Ohio City Singers continue the season with a return to Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  8 pm this Friday, use promo code OCSFAN for ticket discount.

And with the recent passing of Shane MacGowan, this year’s Christmas Eve Eve (Dec 23) show at House of Blues by The Boys from the County Hell will be extra special:

Another great show by The Boys from the County Hell last night. If you look them up on Facebook you'll see a bunch of great videos from the set.

During the opening act, I noticed that Greg Harris, CEO of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, was next to us and using his cell phone to video the band. I figured he must have a family member in the group and it clicked when the lead singer said "I'm Jack Harris" and I realized he looked like a young version of Greg. I saw Greg again during the main set so I introduced myself and asked if it was his son and Greg said yes. I told him that they did a great job (truthfully!). I also thanked Greg for hosting Boys lead singer Doug McKean and the Ohio City Singers at the RRHOF last weekend. Greg said "Doug is a hell of a front man." I thought it was very cool to hear my good friend Doug described that way by the RRHOF CEO!

For reference, during that Ohio City Singers set at the RRHOF, eight of the nine band members sang lead vocals on at least one song. Doug sang lead on several songs and also, throughout the course of the set, played keyboards, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, mandolin, alto sax, tenor sax, and drums. The dude is just a hell of a musician and a great songwriter too. And we've been friends ever since meeting as Freshmen in jazz band with Paul Ferguson at CWRU over 25 years ago.

Thank you for humoring me and my rambling story. And definitely check out those bands sometime.

When is the last time I-71 turned a profit?

That’s actually a pretty big show for Cleveland to get. I saw Rod Stewart play the Hollywood Bowl and he sold it out and last year I saw Stevie Nicks and Billy Joel co-headline a sold out show at So-Fi Stadium in LA. This will be great for downtown. And they may be classic acts (i.e. old) but they both still put on a great show.

I think the disappointment (mine included) revolves around all the hype behind this. I'm sure the show will be great, but it's far from asserting ourselves as the home of rock and roll. The manufactured hype would be different if it were 1992.

^ well ya knooow billy joel used to open for msb. more than once i believe — because micheal stanley loved the guy. so you should love him too. after all he is long island’s michael stanley lol.

anyway, regardless of the acts great news that any show is at the stadium. hopefully more to come.

this is quite a las vegas festival show — i dont think ive ever seen a one day lineup this expansive before (note mjb is not playing) — also a very great indie show example at the rose bowl (css from brasil is back yay) —

maybe the rock hall will wake up and do an actual big fest like this at the stadium next time? certainly they can round up a bunch of dinosaur acts (which in total could be fun) ???

Sam Beam has announced his seventh LP as Iron & Wine (and first in seven years), Light Verse, due out on April 26 via Sub Pop. Beam produced the album, which features a 24-piece orchestra on four songs, as well as Tyler Chester (keyboards), Sebastian Steinberg (bass), David Garza (guitar), Paul Cartwright (strings), and Griffin Goldsmith, Beth Goodfellow, and Kyle Crane (drums/percussion). It was mixed and engineered by Dave Way, and Fiona Apple sings on “All In Good Time.”

Mike Kinsella (of American Football, Cap’n Jazz, etc) has announced a new Owen album, The Falls of Sioux, due April 26 via Polyvinyl (pre-order). It was co-produced by S. Carey and Zach Hanson, who also both worked on the last two Owen albums, and the first single “Beaucoup” finds Mike incorporating electronics in the vein of his recent LIES project. It comes with a hazy video that was filmed at a speakeasy in Chicago.

“I’m not sure if ‘Beaucoup’ is a lusty Love Song or a lovely Lust Song,” Mike says. “Everyone at Weird Life did a great job capturing the seedy side of it, as well as the shimmery / flirty side, visually hitting (and bending) the same note between the notes for the music video.”

The album also features Now, Now’s KC Dalager on backing vocals, string arrangements by Russell Durham (Fleet Foxes, Andrew Bird), synths by Corey Bracken of American Football’s touring band, and “a few other friends” contributing upright bass, pedal steel, and other embellishments.

Phoenix shoegazers Glixen put out their debut EP She Only Said last summer, and they’re gearing up to release their sophomore EP this year. Title and release date are TBA, but they’ve just shared its first single, “foreversoon,” and it feels like a clear step forward. It’s heavier and sludgier than the first EP, but just as sweetly melodic.

Interesting- Downtown Cleveland Alliance will be taking over programming of Public Square from the Group Plan Commission.

https://signalcleveland.org/cleveland-public-square-to-get-new-landlord/

“…After hearing that the commission has been unresponsive to people trying to book events there this summer, Signal Cleveland learned of the behind-the-scenes discussions to change management of Public Square.

It appears that Downtown Cleveland Inc., a nonprofit that promotes downtown, is in line to take a lead in the square’s future. Downtown Cleveland Inc. was formerly known as Downtown Cleveland Alliance before rebranding itself in 2023. The organization recently announced that it had won a  $100,000 grant to make some modest upgrades and changes on the square. “

Like @E Rocc I'd much prefer the Beachland. But HOB does usually have really good sound in my experience. And speaking of sound it should be interesting, as OMD last year toured more like a lo-fi act with only a live drummer, keyboardist and guy with a laptop + the singer.

Except for the time I went to see Third Eye Blind and their roadie crew took over the sound board. The roadie crew was so slathered that the band sounded like they were playing inside a closet. We walked out after two songs and haven’t seen them since.

Yikes.   I've always thought the sound guy should be considered like part of the band.

I'm not going to speculate on your age but both the National and War on Drugs are right in the dad-rock zone of appealing to 30-60yr olds, never too late to hop on to the train:
