Tigers Jaw are gearing up for a fall tourthat will include “a few extra Charmersongs” for the album’s 10th anniversary, and that tour just got even better. Oso Oso, who just released their great new album Life Till Bones, will open all dates. Snoozer (whose Tom Kelly is also Alex G’s touring drummer, and whose new LP Mid-Earth comes out 9/13 via Born Losers Records) are coming along for the ride too. Oso Oso says, “i think this is cool! i think this is gonna be fun! i think this is a show youre gonna want to come out and see!!!”

Haircut 100 – 2024 Tour Dates
All shows with ABC and Howard Jones

Sat, AUG 31 – TempleLive Cleveland Masonic – Cleveland, OH

Early-’80s cable-knit-sweater-wearing new wave greats Haircut 100 only made one album with original lead singer and main songwriter Nick Heyward. That would be their 1982 debut album, Pelican West, which includes UK/MTV hits “Love Plus One,” “Favourite Shirt (Boy Meets Girl),” and “Fantastic Day.” (Nick left the band for a solo career, and the rest soldiered on for 1984’s Paint and Paint but broke up shortly after.) Nick and most of the original lineup reformed a few years ago and have now announced that they’ve made a new album.

Full details are still TBA but first single “The Unloving Plumb” — which is a very Haircut 100 title — will be out August 29.. The band have been performing it live for a while now and it’s a little more in the jangly direction of Nick’s solo album than the funky tropial-disco of their debut.

New music study puts Cleveland ahead of other cities, shows areas for improvement

Ideastream Public Media | By Kabir Bhatia

Published August 29, 2024

The Greater Cleveland Music Census had 2,768 musicians, club owners and industry professionals answer questions on everything from quality of life to quantity of work. The number of responses was about twice that from similar surveys in Columbus and Sacramento.

...

The 24-page report was created by Sound Music Cities of Austin, Texas, with a $25,000 grant from the Cleveland Foundation. The survey results show that the region is very livable for music professionals: 91% have health insurance and 66% own their housing. Yet, 54% of respondents were most concerned about a lack of music work. Musicians could also use support in areas such as social media and generating non-touring revenue.

...

The majority of respondents support the [creation of a funding source for both music venues and comedy clubs, irrespective of tax status]. Even more, 76%, would like to see Cleveland create an office of music economy similar to ones in Austin, Tulsa, Memphis and Nashville.

Ohio lawmakers propose liquor taxes to support live music venues at Rock Hall

Ideastream Public Media | By Kabir Bhatia

Published August 29, 2024

On Thursday night at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Sen. Kent Smith (D-Euclid) unveiled plans to use liquor taxes to create a live music fund. If approved by the legislature, it would take alcohol taxes from venues of 3,000 people or less, create a fund administered by the Ohio Department of Development and allow venues to apply for up to $100,000 a year in rebates. The music program would be capped at $10 million.

...

The majority of survey respondents - 76% - want to see Cleveland create an office of music economy similar to ones in Austin, Tulsa, Memphis and Nashville. Cuyahoga County Executive Chris Ronayne said that statistic “leapt out” at him from the report. During his brief remarks Thursday night, he teased such an idea.

...

Both Watterson and Ronayne pointed to the success of the Greater Cleveland Film Commission as a model for bolstering the region’s creative sector.

Also, included in the article above, was the mention that Hello Cleveland was launched; "a new website which automatically aggregates show listings from throughout the region".

I'm not sure why it took so long for something like this to be put together, but should be a very nice resource!

Indie sensation Mitski brought her signature blend of raw emotion and theatricality to a sold-out crowd at Cleveland's Jacobs Pavilion on September 3, 2024. Touring in support of her latest album, The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We, Mitski transformed the stage into a canvas of interpretive movements that perfectly complemented her deeply personal lyrics.

FireFish Festival Fills Downtown Lorain with Creative Excitement

Sat 9/21 @ 2-11PM

Because it’s out in Lorain, a lot of arty Cleveland types don’t know about the FireFish Festival, even though it’s been going on since 2015. It brings together creatives in the alleys and buildings around downtown Lorain’s Broadway to showcase work that artists, young people and community members have been creating in FireFish’s art programs throughout the year to turn Lorain into what they call “a living art tapestry.”

The day-long festival features music, dance, art installations, interactive family art activities, artisan vendors, food trucks, kinetic wind sculptures by Chuck Karnak (who created a memorable event on the Detroit-Superior Bridge trolley level earlier this summer), and circus performances by Sky Circus and Taylor Elana/Royal Rouge Circus, activating the downtown street into a bustling hive of creativity.

It all leads up to the big finale: the community parade to the waterfront and the burning of the FireFish. This year’s FireFish, they tell us, is the Salmon of Knowledge.

“The story of the Salmon of Knowledge is an Irish mythical tale that begins with a salmon living in a still, dark pool in the shade of the overhanging hazel trees,” they say. “The salmon eat the hazelnuts that fall into the Well of Wisdom, gaining all the world’s knowledge. Anyone who eats the salmon gains this knowledge.”

But there’s still more following the big burn. There’s an open mic session in which the audience can share their poetry, song or anything else they’ve created.

 FireFish is free.

this is a biggie, ty segall, aka the west coast jack white, is back into his drums again and is coming in the spring — via bv:

Segall has announced his second album of 2024. (The first was Three Bells, which came out in January.) It’s titled Love Rudiments, is out August 30 via Drag City, and is a little different from what he’s been doing lately.

Drag City PR says Love Rudiments is a “meditation on love” played on Ty’s first love: the drums. And not just drums, but a wide variety of percussion instruments, including timpani, vibraphone, xylophone, percussion and e-drums. With these malleted instruments, Ty “charts the waxing and waning of a love affair, to explore some of the most delicate space we know of – the private emotional location where only two can meet.”

The lead single is the pretty, twinkly, and quietly cinematic “Luciférine,”
