Yoga for the Masses is tonight.  6:30pm in the NW quadrant of Public Square.

On another note, the fireworks display last night from the W.67th & 69th street neighborhood was insane.  Totally blew away the City of Cleveland's display in every aspect.  It would be interesting to try & measure what the economic impact of that is on the local area, between all the visitors that come in, purchase food & drinks to watch...  People were everywhere, in cars, on bikes, on foot...  really a special tradition for a special Cleveland neighborhood.

We saw that from the rooftop sun deck of my Lakewood/Gold Coast building and we wondered who was doing those fireworks. We were all very impressed!

Also especially terrifying!  I always really enjoy it, but it's hard to believe there isn't a greater degree of personal injury/property damage.  Those streets are narrow!

^ Hospitals buzz with injuries to the stupid at this time of year...those who have no business whatsoever having in possession, explosive materials. It can get way over the top.

Do you have any evidence that anyone from the area was injured? I'm a property owner in the area and would like to know.  It would be the first I've heard of it.

It seems like everybody knows what they're doing at that particular event.  Lots of fire and police around too.

It seems like everybody knows what they're doing at that particular event.  Lots of fire and police around too.

Many of the exploders *are* police and fire too.

Had one small casing land on the hood of my jeep last night.....a bit of colored dust but no damage.

So its just a neighborhood thing...?

Yep

<derail> there was also quite a large show at Loew Park in the Old Brooklyn, </derail> but we could see the Gordon Square show off in the distance, looked pretty good too. I personally would rather have everyone get together and put on a neighborhood show in a park instead of individual groups of idiots shooting them off between houses.

Somewhat of a foolish baiting question if directed to me...but my sister and many other family members works in area hospitals. Bloody hands, burns, and other body parts..  I have also worked late night security positions and witnessed this again and again. It is a busy night and time, for sure. How's that for "evidence?" Or does a bottle rocket have to fly up the tail end to present some "evidence?"

Here are a couple sites that may help assure safety: http://www.cpsc.gov/info/fireworks/index.html

And for "evidence" concerning injuries.... http://www.nfpa.org/categoryList.asp?categoryID=297&cookie_test=1

Keep me away from anyone who poses such a question.. Yikes? He must be the person we all need to watch out for. These products are not toys for the brain dead.

This thread is for the discussion of events, not if they good or bad. If you feel they are bad, take your comments to the Cleveland crime and safety thread.

This is intense.

Wow.  Looks like a medical emergency in the making!

thank God I don't live near there...they're obnoxious enough in Old Brooklyn

I know it might look dangerous/offensive, but I live in the neighborhood and it's really an awesome event.  It brings the whole neighborhood together and it's an unforgettable spectacle.  It also strikes me as distinctly Cleveland-ish.

holy god

It gets ridiculous after like 1 minute in. And I like how that casually walks through the middle of the fireworks at about 42 seconds lol.

TONIGHT!  Hopefully some of you guys will stop by the show.

The 20th Century Society USA (www.20thcs.org) is planning to nominate Cleveland to host the 2015 World Congress on Art Deco.  This Congress is organized every other year and attracts participants from around the world.  This year's Congress is in Rio de Janeiro (August, 2011) and it's in Rio where the site of the 2015 Congress will be decided. [The 2013 Congress is scheduled for Havana, Cuba.]

The 20th Century Society USA is a non profit organization of people interested in the art, architecture, and design of the 20th Century.  We have members in 11 states and 5 foreign countries, and recently relocated to Ohio from North Carolina.  We welcome new members!

We propose the theme of the 2015 Congress to be "Artists, Designers, and Craftsmen,"to focus on Cleveland's fine tradition of Art Deco art and craftsmanship, and in particular industrial design.

And then we considered: wouldn't it be great if there were a year-long celebration of Cleveland's Art Deco legacy, involving multiple cultural and educational institutions throughout the city?  "2015: Cleveland Celebrates Art Deco," or something like that.  Each institution could plan whatever they wish under the theme of Art Deco. Some examples:

--The Cleveland Museum of Art organized a wonderful exhibit about Viktor Schreckengost in 2000.  We think Cleveland (and the world!) is ready for another retrospective about this "American da Vinci"  The new Schreckengost Museum would be an obvious collaborator.

--Cowan Pottery Museum organizes a show featuring their finest pieces of Art Deco design.

--Rose Iron Works exhibits its superb Art Deco ironwork and equally wonderful drawings of Paul Feher.

--WRHS has an exhibit about the Great Lakes Exhibition of 1936-37.  Then direct visitors to the Ferro Mural, Art Deco furniture by Rorimer-Brooks, and the vintage autos of the era at the Crawford.

--Students at the Cleveland Institute of Art show their work inspired by Art Deco designs.

--Cleveland Public Library displays its collection of Art Deco bookbindings.

--Cleveland Jazz Orchestra has several concerts throughout 2015 featuring music of the period.

--CSU Michael Schwartz Library organizes an exhibit of archival photographs related to Art Deco.

--Art Deco fashions from the collection of KSU (and/or WRHS.)  KSU fashion design students--and other Cleveland designers--show their work inspired by Art Deco styles.

--Etc...endless possibilities!

The 2015 Congress on Art Deco in Cleveland, therefore, would be just one component of a year-long celebration of Cleveland Art Deco.  This could attract thousands of visitors throughout the year, and educate Clevelanders about the city's illustrious past.  As Cleveland struggles to re-invent itself, this would be a powerful reminder that Cleveland has a proud tradition of designing and manufacturing world-class goods.

We have organized two public meetings to present our proposal to nominate Cleveland to host the 2015 World Congress on Art Deco.  Both meetings are at the Cleveland Chop House, 824 West St Clair Ave:

Saturday, July 30, 2011         10:00 am          Breakfast will be served.

Sunday, July 31, 2011            4:00 pm          Hors d'oeuvres and cash bar.

Each meeting will begin with an informal reception, followed by a presentation, and ample time to answer questions, learn more about the 20th Century Society, and share ideas.  If you, or anyone you know would like to join us, kindly RSVP to [email protected] by July 27, 2011.  The restaurant requests an advance "head count," so we need notification for those that plan to attend.  All interested are welcome!  Students welcome!  We hope you can join us!

I like this part..and hope it does JOLT the brains into gear!

To help the JOLT, I did send letters about our proposal to museum directors, college/university art department chairs, community leaders, etc.

I'm happy to say that one museum contacted me today--they are very interested and are sending two representatives to our meeting.

We ordered too much food for our function, and don't want it to go to waste.  So we would like to invite the UO crowd to share our bounty for an

IMPROMPTU UO COCKTAIL PARTY.  (no other agenda...promise!)

Sunday, July 31, 2011          5:00 pm      Cleveland Chop House, 824 West St Clair Ave (we have the private banquet room)

Open bar, (light) Hors d'oeuvres. FREE.

Now that I've moved back to Ohio, it will be fun to meet some of the informed and positive people of the UO forum.  So if you're in the Warehouse District Sunday evening, stop by for a drink (or two) and introduce yourself--and meet some of the others.

We can accommodate about 20 people...so the first 20 (or so) people that indicate on this thread that they will attend...are welcome to join us!  Please RSVP here since the restaurant requests an advance "head count."  (And of course, please show up if you say you're planning to attend.) Looking forward to meeting you!

My fiance and I can make it. We live downtown and are always looking to meet new people. Plus, I have a weakness for the Chop House.

Looking forward to meeting you Boffo and fiance!

Someone suggested that I clarify "we," as "we ordered too much food."  We is the 20th Century Society USA.  Our meeting is at 4:00 pm, we should conclude before 5:00 pm, when the UO crowd is scheduled to arrive.

Thanks for thinking of us!  I'll stop by for a little while.

Update:  We thoroughly enjoyed meeting some new people.  We got to meet Boffo and his lovely fiance.  And X--despite the most mysterious name on UrbanOhio--is pretty much a regular guy in person.  Everyone was disappointed that MayDay couldn't get Downtown in time--especially the dozens of guests hoping for an autograph from the author for their recently purchased book: Cleveland's Downtown Architecture (Arcadia Publishing, 2003.) Maybe next time...

Among those represented: a museum curator, a labor activist, an (organic, naturally) urban gardener, two members of the Cleveland Photographic Society, an accountant, a dental hygienist, a glass bead artist, the VP of special projects for a museum, and a family doctor from Washington Court House, Ohio.  The most exotic birthplace of the participants: Zambia.  We were also intrigued to learn that the Cleveland Photographic Society is among the oldest and most respected in the country!

It would fun to organize another informal UO event in the future, with more advanced notice, of course.

"pretty much"?!

....eh, fair enough.

Damn -- I totally forgot about this!!!

heard about a 1000 people showed up

i just read the article in the PD about the upcoming Oktoberfest, which got me thinking ... is there any way that an urban venue could host a (perhaps smaller-scale) Oktoberfest celebration?  An Ohio City Oktoberfest would be amazing (in the green space by the Carnegie branch library, maybe?  Or at multiple spaces throughout the neighborhood at the same time?).  It'd be nice to bring some German flavor back to the traditionally German and Irish Cleveland neighborhood.  Temporary euro-style "gartens" sprinkled throughout the neighborhood would be awesome...possibly a far-fetched dream, but it'd be awesome.

Quite honestly, nothing appeals to me about celebrating anything at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds.  I've never been to the event, but I think the location certainly has something to do with that.

Cincinnati has their Oktoberfest (largest in USA) right in the heart of Downtown.  They close 5th St for 3-4 blocks.  It is truely one thing I miss, the fact that Cleveland does not seem to have any street festivals Downtown.  It would be great to close down PS (like they are doing for the 9/11 concert) and have the festival there.

Cincy's is great!  I was there a few years back.  Columbus apparently had theirs in German Village at one point, which I'm sure was awesome.  I think something smaller scale in Cleveland, in addition to the "official" Oktoberfest at the fairgrounds, could work.

There is  a Greek Festival this Saturday and Sunday in Kamms Corners. They are closing the streets for that. I think it should  be fun.
