Ya Mon!

A nice crowd tonight as well.

All--I would like to propose this new topic. I know we have posted convention news under the CCMM thread, but that is supposed to be more about construction. Also, there are other venues for events in the city. As such, this topic could be for all future convention announcements. And I'll start with the next post.....

This is a cool event -- and is open to the public.

Airliners International 2013 -- Cleveland

June 26 -- 29, 2013

Sheraton Cleveland Airport Hotel

The World's Largest Airline Collectibles Show & Convention!

The Airliners International Collectibles Show and Convention, now in its 37th year, makes its first Cleveland appearance in June 2013.  The three-day annual event will draw commercial aviation enthusiasts from around the globe.

I am going to cross-post in the MMCC construction thread since it mentions some construction

Cleveland's new convention center bags another health-related conference

The Cleveland convention center and medical mart has bagged another event.

The 2014 CleanMed Conference & Exposition will be held at the under-construction trade show complex in downtown Cleveland May 12-16, 2014. The conference on environmental sustainability in the health care field is expected to attract 1,000 hospital administrators, physicians and other hospital staff and 100 exhibitors.

shameless self-promotion that's also related to entertainment in Cleveland. I am appearing in both of these. Message me if you want deets about the latter, since it is several shows over several days.

Pandemonium, CPT's annual gala benefit (tix are $135) is Saturday, Sept 8. It is a FABULOUS PARTY full of debauchery and amazement. Like Mardi Gras, but more contained, and with professional performers. At least, we're professional until the last set of performances, by which time we're usually half in the bag.

Springboard, CPT's staged reading festival (which doesn't mean anything to you except plays, but shorter, for which the actors have had very little rehearsal) is October 11-21. Tix are only $10! :

Please come out and support local theater and local actors!

I may have to bring my GF to that, she is up from FL this weekend.

Love the GF!  I will definitely be there some point this weekend.  Maybe Sat.  If so, I will have to guess who Mrs. Hts is.  I grew up on Compton (the side St the church is on the corner of) and used to get paid when I was a kid to empty the trash at the festival.

^She'll be the one with the fake diamond ring on (or not.... if there are some cute greek guys wandering around :()

Not new to CLE, but new to the MMCC:

Ohio Optometric Association to move conference to Cleveland's new convention center

By JAY MILLER

2:04 pm, August 27, 2012

"The Ohio Optometric Association's annual EastWest Eye Conference will move to the under-construction Cleveland Convention Center in 2013, 2014 and 2015.

The optometrists' meeting will attract 1,500 attendees and 100 exhibitors, who are expected to book 1,125 room nights in downtown hotels, according to MMPI Inc., the developer and manager of the new trade show complex.

The conference dates are Oct. 3-5, 2013; Oct. 9-11, 2014; and Oct. 1-4, 2015....."

Another conference slated for the CCMM.

"The Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) has agreed to hold its Professional Development Conference in Cleveland in 2015, 2017 and 2019.

Attendees at these three conferences are expected to fill more than 2,575 hotel rooms in downtown Cleveland in a Thursday-Sunday pattern during January and February, according to a news release. This will bring a direct economic impact expected to exceed $2.8 million.

More than 9,000 people attended OMEA’s 2012 conference...."

Of those 9,000, they should be reporting the number from outside of Cleveland.  The news never reports that number.

^ I agree. Its also too difficult to figure out the number based on the article---

"Attendees at these three conferences are expected to fill more than 2,575 hotel rooms in downtown Cleveland in a Thursday-Sunday"

Assuming check in on Thurs and out on Sunday is 3 nights, so 2575 divided by 3 nights divided by 3 separate years would be 286....that doesn't seem right...if they meant 2,575 room nights, then it would be 2575 / 3 conferences which is 858 which also seems low if 9,000 people attended the last one...

I would assume they meant 2575 rooms filled per night from the way it was worded.

Welcome back! Looking forward to Ingenuity on the lakefront this year.

^Just curious---anyone have any idea how big the InterCon's convention facility is, in terms of square footage and accommodations for a 'keynote speech' type layout?

Wonder if Cleveland could get one of the political national conventions next time around. Might still be a hotel room availability issue though.

Interesting.  I would think Cleveland would have a similar number of rooms that a Charlotte has, but perhaps not Tampa?

Another cool meeting:

2012 Oral History Association Annual Meeting

October 10 – 14, 2012

Cleveland Marriott at Key Center

Was held in Denver last year.

The convention hotel is the Marriott, but its interesting to note they offer their attendees cheaper digs as well and mention the new hostel in Ohio City.

Tours for the convention include the West Side Market and the Cultural Gardens....

from their website:

The Cleveland Tango and Bowling Marathon!

Lakewood, September 7 – 9 2012

http://clevelandtangomarathon.com/

The Cleveland Tango and Bowling Marathon is an all inclusive event for dancers and non dancers.

Located at MAHALLS 20 Lanes 13200 Madison Avenue in Lakewood Ohio

I intend for this event to have many purposes

First of all I want to bring something back home. I love Cleveland for many reasons and although I can not live there any more I do wish to return and bring back all the things and people whom I have met and befriended outside of Cleveland.

I want to create an event that allows EVERYONE to participate in some way. Tango is not only about being the best dancer. It allows us the opportunity to be better people for ourselves and those around us. It gives us a sense of social responsibility and awareness of who we are in respect to those around us. The affect we have on others and how we can make that affect more positive.

I want to bring my friends together and bridge the gaps in communities. Especially in small tango communities where the gaps are HUGE and pointless because everyone is fighting about nothing that has anything to do with the what I believe to be the purpose of this dance.

On Friday, September 21, 2012, 7:00 pm:  The 20th Century Society USA is hosting a presentation by Joan Kahr at the Cleveland Museum of Art.  Mrs. Kahr wrote a highly acclaimed book about Edgar Brandt, the French master of Art Deco ironwork.  Mrs. Kahr will also discuss Cleveland's Rose Iron Works, and the role of Paul Feher, the very talented Hungarian designer who came to Cleveland in the late 1920s to work with Martin Rose--a collaboration that produced the finest Art Deco metalwork in America. The museum is open until 9 pm on Fridays; the lecture and admission to the regular collection are FREE.  Mrs. Kahr will be available to sign copies of her book, and we will give away one copy of the book to those in attendance.

Saturday, September 22, from 1:00-5:00 pm:  The 20th Century Society USA is organizing a minibus tour to see some of the creations of Rose Iron Works in the Cleveland area.  We will begin at the Cleveland Museum of Art; try to include works at the Cleveland Botanical Garden, St. James Church in Lakewood, and The Hangar, a private club in Beachwood. The tour will conclude at the Rose Iron Works shop on East 43rd St.

The cost of the tour will be $15 for 20th Century Society members and $25 for nonmembers.

Space is limited, and on a first-come, first served basis.  Interested participants must register and pay in advance: please contact the 20th Century Society directly at [email protected] or 828-778-6425.

I was fortunate enough to tour the Rose Iron Works a few years ago before Mr. Rose died.  It's really fascinating, and definitely worth your time if you've got any interest in Cleveland history.

Very cool event tonight at E. 47th and Lakeside:

No doubt.  If you want people to support the director and his movie, that is not the picture to post.  Makes him look like a db.

I can't figure out which is worse..... the 'look at me, I'm cool because I'm flippin the double bird' pose..... or the ruffles on his shirt.  I'm leaning towards the ruffles.

Ha! Julien's a personal friend of mine and I can assure you he's the furthest thing from a db you can imagine. Well, he's as okay as you can get being a weak-kneed Hollywood LIBERAL.

I'm not going to stick up for that outfit however.
