Good riddance! In the old days, the "International Rib Burn Off" on the Mall was a great collection of maybe 100 rib chefs. $1/bone or so and had many many delicious vendors. I was very sad when that disappeared and the "Great American" Music fest with some ribs appeared. That show was more about music than ribs. They focused on the music line up and not rib vendors. Hopefully the city can pull an event together---all we need is ribs--not music.

Interesting--the article did not say why it was being cancelled and if it was cancelled for all future years as well.

Great now where am I going to see the likes of Night Ranger or the B-52's. ... Duh that would be the Rocksino...

Ah yes, the old "Bib Run-Off!" I miss it too!

There was one valuable thing imho. The Fest showed how well the riverside could be utilized in concert with Tower City Ampitheater for entertainment purposes.

From a development standpoint a permanent family entertainment district could be a tremendous asset. Imagine having the boardwalk run through that section as a three season outdoor attraction. Now I suppose the West Bank could fill that missing piece in the Cleveland puzzle with further development. But if BOTH banks were connected and drawn into the same entertainment district that would be tremendous synergy.

I guess it's never too early to give a plug to this annual biggest event in my little hometown...Joe Hertler & the Rainbow Seekers (themselves!) will be making an appearance. Has anyone heard of them? :|

Okay then, here's the line-up for Painesville Party in the Park (or as the organizer once called it, "the best bands you've never heard of" :wtf:), a glittering constellation of talent if there ever was one (but can they stop with the tribute bands already? :-P). Again, mostly Cleveland area groups, even a band from Painesville this year (they actually found one!), The Mason District, that doesn't sound half-bad (how's that for a ringing endorsement). And since Party in the Park occurs in the three days just prior to the start of the RNC, I'd also like to officially extend an invitation to any early arrivals. It may be a little tough for those California delegates staying in Sandusky to travel to P'ville, but come on guys, there's even a group from San Fran Freako making an appearance (though they're probably Democrats). Give it the old college try! It may be the only fun you'll experience (kidding :|)

What? No Public Square celebration for NYE? I found references for a now-defunct group in 2013.

What? No Public Square celebration for NYE? I found references for a now-defunct group in 2013.

It last happened 2014-15 and then they cancelled last years just a few weeks before saying they couldn't secure enough sponsorship money because of the RNC. It was supposed to come back this year but there has been no word about it at all, so it's not happening .

Cleveland will host the 14th World Congress on Art Deco May 14-21, 2017.  About 130 delegates from around the world--including Ireland, Hungary, Argentina, France, Australia, and New Zealand--will be in Cleveland to see it's Art Deco treasures.  This World Congress occurs every 2 years, and is sponsored by the International Coalition of Art Deco Societies, will help from the (local) 20th Century Society USA.  Most days there will be morning lectures at Cleveland State University and tours in the afternoon.  Some participants are attending pre-Congress events in Cincinnati and Detroit, and post-Congress events in Pittsburgh: www.artdecoworldcongress.org.

We need volunteers to help with tours!  You don't need to know anything about Art Deco--we'll train you and provide a "script."  Far more important are volunteers that are passionate about Cleveland...and if you know some Cleveland history, that's good too.  (Maybe you wrote a book on Downtown architecture, maybe you're knowledgeable about the history of train travel...we would love to have you..hint, hint.)  Tours usually include lunch. It's a fun group that gets together every two years--LOTS of Australians--who are a blast!

Our first "tour guide training session" will be this Saturday, April 22, from 10:30 am-12:30 pm.  Most volunteers will only need one session.  If you would like to join us this Saturday, let us know and we'll provide the Downtown Cleveland location: [email protected].

There will be "classes" every weekend until the Congress, usually Friday and Saturday, so if you would like to participate in a future "class" let us know and we'll provide the schedule: [email protected]

There will some changes to the tentative itinerary: www.20thcs.org.  But the basic outline is correct.

We have a need for guides fluent in French and Spanish!

We also are looking for Clevelanders with a passion for vintage clothing--some of the delegates have amazing vintage outfits, and would be interested in some local vintage shopping.

Hope you can join us!

Your friends at the 20th Century Society USA

ah i remember this was mentioned here awhile back when cle was awarded this conference.

Can someone explain that logo to me? Are the "L" in "Lorain" and "I" in "International" supposed to represent something?

afaik it just represents bad 1960's-era graphic design --

to be charitable about it, it's kind of quaint to see these days

Sails, as a tie-in to the lake, maybe.

Yes the 'I' is a sail and the 'L' is a bird, a lake gull.

Alright, no one ever said this is the hippest music festival in the world, but whoever thought booking four tribute bands (wtf?) would be a good idea? Give me one of those pretentious indie bands with off-key vocalists and an "ironic" name any day. (Painesville Party in the Park desperately seeking new Talent Selection Committee for 2018 lol)  I guess this what happens when you try to be all things to all people. As usual, mostly Cleveland-area bands, and where else can you find a more motley assemblage of burnouts, freaks, geeks and suburban dads in one place? Bring the kids. Lots of fun for the whole family. It's festivus--a festival for the rest of us!

Also Saturday night (8/26) at 6 PM, #8-ranked John Carroll is traveling to #22-ranked Case Western Reserve for a preseason football scrimmage. (Note: there at 249 teams in NCAA DIII).  Probably the most football talent on the field in Cleveland not being reported.

So if you're looking to hang out in University Circle/Little Italy this Saturday night, pop over for DiSanto Field for some free local football.  Reminiscent of the old Cleveland city "Big Four" days.

EDIT: Please disregard.  The scrimmage happened tonight (Friday).  The date was listed incorrectly from the News Herald.  This also reinforces the lack of local media coverage for Case Western Reserve and John Carroll football.

^who were the big four?

^who were the big four?

Case Tech

Western Reserve

John Carroll

Baldwin Wallace

Huge crowds back then for league games.  Check out this photo from 1935 of Baldwin Wallace @ Western Reserve, back when Cleveland supported its local college football: https://books.google.com/books?id=RFvzem5opK0C&pg=PT129&lpg=PT129&dq=%22western+reserve%22+%22baldwin+wallace%22+football+league+park&source=bl&ots=gXwrx3lpZH&sig=rtyDX_b30TKDexo-JLnuwO_fgOw&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwij1cSoivTVAhUB5mMKHVbmBqQ4ChDoAQgmMAA#v=onepage&q=%22western%20reserve%22%20%22baldwin%20wallace%22%20football%20league%20park&f=false

Cleveland had its own Big Four Conference, which was formed in 1933 consisting of Baldwin-Wallace, Case Tech, John Carroll, and Western Reserve. Some of the highest attended games in school history occurred during this decade, needing to be played at Cleveland Municipal Stadium and League Park to handle the larger crowds. The champion received the Douglas S. Campbell Trophy. Case Tech won the inaugural in 1933 and then Western Reserve won eight out of the next nine—1934, 1935, 1936, 1937, 1938, 1940, 1941, and 1942. The local tradition came to an end due to the interruption of World War II.

Per wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Case_Western_Reserve_Spartans_football#Pre-merger

^interesting, thanks. looks like yet another thing changed by WW2.

That popularity of college football likely led to Cleveland getting the Rams franchise in 1936.

Bringing the inductions back to Cleveland every other year requires significant local buy-in

Catching Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr perform a few tunes in an intimate 5,000-seat concert hall isn't usually a possibility in Cleveland — or anywhere, for that matter...

Moreover, the relatively recent decision by the Rock Hall's foundation to host the induction ceremony in Cleveland every two years, pending funding, is evidence of the Rock Hall's maturation as an institution and the city as a world-class competitor for major events. The ceremony also returns to Cleveland as many of its major assets — like the Hilton Downtown Cleveland Hotel — came online in the run-up to the 2016 Republican National Convention.

New Ordering headlining blows my mind every time I read a post about it

Hook is a whiny baby

We saw the New Order show in Chicago a few years ago. They played a half hour set of just Joy Division music. Amazing. Of course, I understand that may not be the case in a festival setting.

Got my single day tickets purchased for Saturday

Just a little over two months to go until Painesville's annual "big event." But alas, I doubt that Olivier will be making a reappearance since he decamped from Cleveland and defected to the Nets. However, certainly an equally talented local yokel will be found to serve as MC this year. Or maybe not :(
