Marine Week, coming June 11-17 to Cleveland

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Hundreds of U.S. Marines will be landing in Cleveland on June 11.

They will bring lots of equipment, such as an MV-22 Osprey, an aircraft that performs like a helicopter but can also fly like a plane, demonstrate their amphibious assault vehicles and show off their Marine bands and drill teams.

It's the annual Reggae Brunch at Parkview Tavern (Detroit Shoreway) on Sunday. Sorry I can't find a good link for the event re: time. As always, Carlos Jones will be there to celebrate Bob Marley's b-day. He usually starts playing around 3pm. Get there early in the a.m. for delicious breakfast.

MH, I have kind of a special request. Do you have any visibility on Memorial Day weekend events? A good friend and her whole family are coming to visit me (husband and 3 kids of varying ages) and I'm trying to come up with a preliminary list of things we can do. We will be hitting the greek festival in tremont of course, and possibly the rib cook-off since that's always that weekend, but are there any other types of activities or festivals already on the books for that weekend?

If you don't know, no big, just thought I'd ask since you always seem to have good lists of what's happening when.

The United States Marine Corps chose Cleveland for its 2012 Marine Week

Wow, I can't believe I haven't posted in here in 3 years! So in the meantime, the third offering of the conference took place last year in Detroit. Something like 400 people attended. It was great! And great to see our little Cleveland-based conference hitting the road.

On that note, Rust Belt to Artist Belt 4 will be taking place in St. Louis April 12th to 14th. This year's focus is on community engagement and artist-led neighborhood revitalization. Gonna be great! Check it out: http://rustbelttoartistbelt.com/

I really tried to go a shout out to the region economic engines -- Jumpstart, NorTech, CWRU -- who have been growing Cleveland through technology start up companies... And the bright future for the region as a startup hotbed.

Too bad I couldn't give a plug to my upcoming event... Oh well

Im sure one of these days you will tell me to stop being lazy and find out for myself...but any help MH for this weekend would be great.

Cleveland International Film Festival: 2012 event sets attendance record; 'Under African Skies,' 'Beauty is Embarrassing' take top awards

Published: Sunday, April 01, 2012, 10:50 PM

By Clint O'Connor, The Plain Dealer

http://www.cleveland.com/moviebuff/index.ssf/2012/04/cleveland_international_film_f_35.html

As with most things in life, the 36th Cleveland International Film Festival came down to the art of love.

The 11-day event, which set new attendance records and wrapped Sunday night with Paul Williams serenading the crowd at Tower City Center, stared down a quintessential technical glitch: "The Art of Love," a French romance from festival favorite Emmanuel Mouret, arrived in Cleveland without -- Mon Dieu! -- subtitles. This was fine. If you spoke French. Which the few folks who remained in the theater on opening weekend did (along with some non-French speaking stalwarts who apparently understood the universal language of cinema).

In the meantime, festival staffers called hundreds of ticket holders to warn them not to come, at least until a new copy of the movie arrived in time for closing weekend. "I'm not religious," said the festival's executive director Marcie Goodman, who introduced "The Art of Love's" Sunday screening. "But it was the first time I had ever asked an audience to pray with me that the film would play with subtitles."

It did.

More than 85,000 people, the most ever, attended this year's festival at Tower City Cinemas, and they saw more than 320 features and shorts, including some sterling documentaries. Australian director Genevieve Bailey spent five years interviewing 11-year-olds in 15 countries for some joyful commentary and brought her film, "I am Eleven," here for its international premiere.

I just want to say again that we have the greatest film festival in America.

I just spent the last 12 days there working: 10-12 hours, mostly on my feet. I am still beat up from that. It was soooooo busy. Can't wait to work there again next year.

Nice!  What an awesome event for Cleveland and the Region!

a new record not surprized and that is awesome news!

just for a bit of comparison --

other film fest attendance:

tribeca 430k

toronto 230k

cannes 200k+

venice 370k

sundance 45k

considering all the backing of these other fests, like redford, deniro and umm, gerard depradieu?   cle is doing very, very well -

How many screens, movies, shorts do each of these places use? That would help with the comparison.

Berlinale is the other "marquee" festival that I think of ... 300,000 tickets sold to 965 screenings of 385 films (including 100 short films) on approximately 50 screens. Yeah, I'd say Cleveland's 85,000 and 320 films is doing pretty freaking great given the difference in exposure, cache and budget ($25.5 million versus $1.7 million ... although, to be fair, Berlinale does a lot more ancillary programming, not to mention a much more substantial industry element, including more than 15,000 industry professionals and nearly 4,000 journalists).

a new record not surprized and that is awesome news!

Another reason why CIFF is the best. So many of the other festivals are centered around celebrities, and they turn into major league Hollywood "pat ourselves on the back" vanity type events.

In Cleveland it's not about that at all. The films are the central attraction. The biggest celebrity I see at CIFF is Toby from American Splendor. Although, one disclaimer, I did get to hang out with Stiflers Mom (aka Jennifer Coolidge) at Tower City last year.

But could you imagine what our attendance would be if we, like Santa Barbara's Festival, had James Cameron, Jeff Bridges, George Clooney, Michael  Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones (and Gerard Depradieu!) parading around? We would probably quadruple the numbers but instead of the films taking center stage it would be all about Hollywood gossip. No thanks.

I think one interesting question for our film festival is just what the capacity is to grow much bigger. Having seen what a madhouse it becomes down there, and how hard the largely volunteer staff works on behalf of the event is, I don't question that there's additional audience out there ... but wow, I can't imagine Tower City accommodating it, let alone individual theaters that are more often than not packed to the gills. With record attendances every single year lately, I have to imagine organizers are thinking about how you accommodate a bigger audience by lengthening the festival or adding more screenings around town (with the logistical issues of getting out-of-towners there). And then there's always the elephant in the room of the casino and what it might do to Forest City's tenant strategy. I can't even imagine what the film festival would be like if Tower City Cinema wasn't in play!

^ Excellent points. I want the festival to grow, but at a steady rate where the spirit of the event isn't compromised. We've got a good thing going at Tower City, the central location is a real strength.

The annual Cowan Pottery Symposium will be on Saturday, May 5, 2012.  This year is special because it will inaugurate the 100th Anniversary of the founding of Cowan Pottery.  The highlight of the program will be a presentation by Mark Bassett, an expert on American Art Pottery and the "Cleveland School" in particular.  He wrote a very well researched and critically acclaimed book about the subject.

Cowan Pottery was made in the Cleveland area from 1912 until 1931.  Many respected artists worked for Cowan over the years, and the works were known for their quality craftsmanship, unusual glazes, and progressive designs--many in an Art Deco style.  The pottery was sold in prestigious department and specially stores around the country.

The program should appeal to those interested in art, art pottery, Art Deco, and Cleveland history.

The heritage of Cowan Pottery was one of the factors that influenced the International Coalition of Art Deco Societies to select Cleveland as the host of the World Congress on Art Deco in 2017.
