September 28, 201410 yr Did anyone else go to Ingenuity this year? I hate to use such a strong word for a cause that I support, but I thought it was awful. I feel like it's been lacking over the last few years and really needs to do a better job defining itself, but it's usually an enjoyable event. I was bored after a half hour this year and left. It seemed like everything was not organized well, and spreading things out through North Coast Harbor and inside the Science Center was not a good idea. Not to mention, the food options seemed to be very sub par this year as well. I fully support their mission, but I think it's time for Ingenuity to get some fresh leadership.
September 29, 201410 yr ^I don't want to pile on too much, but I agree. I enjoyed my time there simply because the bands we were watching were fantastic, but the festival was too spread out and the art installations were lacking IMO. They need to think about moving this event back to a more intimate venue (Playhouse Square, D-S Bridge, Ohio City, etc.).
October 3, 201410 yr They'll likely move the location. Part of their mission is to showcase parts of the city that the general public wouldn't necessarily explore on their own, or don't have access to. The DS Bridge was one of my favorite spots, but it was a logistical nightmare to set up, particularly given there was no easy access to electricity and other utilities. Still, it was worth it. Just a great space, views of the city, etc. My impression of the festival is that they're going through a sort of identity crisis. Do they want to showcase Arts & Technology, the City of Cleveland, or do they want to be another SXSW? I distinctly get the impression they're trying for all the above. Personally, I think they spread out their programming too much over the year, and should just focus their efforts on this, their flagship event.
October 3, 201410 yr Didn't make it this year but did go last year. It was really fun. I'll call last year a success. Mostly on the mere fact that drawing people to the waterfront showcased just how much we are lacking in a "go-to" lively place; the kind of spot where one can just hang out and enjoy a summer night in a lively, festive atmosphere. Obviously it's kinda cool being lakeside and as we all know, we need more of that option. In the somewhat near future this "go-to" place could be North Coast Harbor, aka Baltimore: The Sequel. Maybe FEB boardwalk will be the place, though I doubt it. We shall see.
November 20, 201410 yr I thought this had its own thread last year, but couldn't find so will just post it here: The Ohio Homecoming CLE ROCKS NYE event will be on Mall B this year. They will be announcing details of the event during a press conference on Friday (11/21). I was hoping they would be having it at Play House Square, but Mall B is still a good spot for it though. https://www.facebook.com/events/1511048902492032/

November 21, 201410 yr I didn't go, but the headliner music acts are E-V, MGK, and Carlos Jones. They're also charging $10 to get in this year. Not sure how I feel about them just making it a concert that you have to pay to go to. Edit: Here's the poster
November 21, 201410 yr Yeah, not a fan at all of the charging to get in. Hopefully, at least the security check point bottleneck from last year will be corrected. Can anyone else pick up the tab? Cleveland Foundation? Casino tax? :)
February 5, 201510 yr http://eggshellandeaster.tripod.com/ CLEVELAND (Reuters) - After more than 50 years, loyal fans have one last chance to visit the Easter bunny and other Easter-themed mosaics made of thousands of brightly colored eggs on a lawn in an eastern suburb of Cleveland. The displays have drawn thousands of visitors each year to the sprawling lawn of Betty and Ron Manolio in Lyndhurst, Ohio, but the 55th annual event this year will be the last. Eggshelland was created by Ron Manolio, 80, who died in August. This final display is dominated by a 16-foot by 15-foot portrait of the man who each year spent months hollowing out and hand-painting anywhere from 3,000 to 10,000 eggs. A message below the picture reads "thank you all, and goodbye." This year, Manolio's children and grandchildren set up the 21,630 eggs in 24 colors in a display entitled "A Labor of Love" in tribute to their grandfather. The egg mosaics depict a 45-foot cross, an Easter bunny and an EGGSHELLAND sign propped up in front of the couple's house. "Our children did this their entire lives. They thought everyone does this," Betty Manolio told Reuters. But the months it takes to design and two to three weekends for installation are too much for the family to keep up. Egg mosaics in past years have depicted characters from Sesame Street, Winnie-the-Pooh, and Harry Potter and spring scenes. Manolio said that because her husband was the creative force behind project, it would be too difficult to continue Eggshelland without him. "Actually, I was amazed we were doing it for 55 years," she said. "If he (Ron) was still around I think we would do it until we both died. I'm going to miss it next year." Others will miss Eggshelland too. On a typical day, cars line up on their street and around the corner to catch a glimpse the display that began with a mere 750 eggs saved over the course of a year in 1957. At Eggshelland's peak in the 1970s local police were called to direct traffic. Local and national media have described Eggshelland as a childhood fantasy land but in truth the phenomena has quite an adult following including a website dedicated to its 55-year history and its creators (eggshellandeaster.tripod.com), and a 2004 award-winning documentary on their efforts. Eggshelland will be up until April 5th. After that, Manolio hasn't yet decided what will happen to the eggs. Previously, they stored the eggs for the year and replaced those that had broken. "We haven't decided what to do with them. We've gotten some calls," Manolio said. "My grandchildren, of course, told me to put them on eBay."
February 6, 201510 yr It's actually the Euclid Beach Boys that are now in charge of it. The city has donated use of the tennis courts to them and work with the Beach Boys to keep the tradition going. Tentatively, they do plan on displaying it again this year at Lyndhurst Park. I believe it is planned for the week leading up to Easter Sunday as the city has several events planned at the community center in conjunction with the display.
February 6, 201510 yr Ark Band was awesome last night at the Grog Shop's Bob Marley birthday celebration. I recommend going to see them play when you have a chance. They will be with Carlos Jones and others at the HOB on 2/13.

I knew someone else had picked up the tradition, but had not seen anything for this year. Thanks.
February 9, 201510 yr I lived two blocks away from Manolio's house from 1967-78 and we rode our bikes over to see Eggshell Land every year. Haven't been back since we moved. Great memories, though. March 30, 201510 yr Cleveland International Film Festival 2015: It's a wrap -- CIFF breaks 100,000 attendance mark for first time Cleveland, Ohio - Can a film festival held in the Rust Belt in March draw more than 100,000 fans? One can. The Cleveland International Film Festival, which wrapped Sunday night with an awards reception in Tower City Center, broke through the six-figure barrier in attendance for the first time in its 39-year history, drawing 100,204 film fans over 12 days. "The same message over and over is that we want to do better not bigger," the festival's executive director Marcie Goodman told me before the awards ceremony. "But sometimes those two things go hand in hand." http://www.cleveland.com/moviebuff/index.ssf/2015/03/cleveland_international_film_f_70.html#incart_m-rpt-1
March 31, 201510 yr ^The film festival was awesome. Great films as usual: esp. "Dreamcatcher", "The Tribe" -- both harsh, unflinching films: the former, a documentary style story about one ex-prostitute's quest to save her street sisters; the latter, a fictional piece focusing on a run-down, gang-run boarding school for the deaf in a grim Kiev, Ukraine slum area (and you thought Cleveland slums were bad!... also note: there was neither any dialogue nor subtitles -- an amazing flick)... CIFF has become so prominent, many Hollywood producers scout the fest... ... Also the added synergy at Tower City with the NCAA regionals, esp the fantastic Notre Dame vs. UK showdown, was fantastic for downtown. We heard a lot of out-of-towner's compliments of the City, its physical beauty, great restaurants and active nightlife.
March 31, 201510 yr I've been on the seasonal staff there for eight years now. I love doing it and look forward to it every year.... until the day after. Then my body realizes I have no more adrenaline left and essentially wants to shut down. I am soooooo sore right now. Only 358 days until opening night 2016!!!!
March 31, 201510 yr ^ The CIFF has got to be one of the best run events in the country. All you have to do is talk to the volunteers and you see the dedication. Talk to the leaders and you feel the same dedication and passion for film. Now the only thing CIFF is missing is a big, real and raucous blowout party. Then again, that kinda thing just may be the antithesis to what our Fest is all about.
March 31, 201510 yr The CIFF has slipped to #2 in the voting. The poll is somewhat meaningless but it would be good publicity nonetheless. You can vote everyday. http://www.10best.com/awards/travel/best-film-festival/?CMPID=USAT-Cards

April 14, 201510 yr Is three months too far in advance to publicize an event? I don't know why I keep promoting this thing year after year (It's really just a bunch of unregenerate old hippies--kidding!), but it's free (actually I wish they would do a jazz festival :-()-- https://vimeo.com/118423854 http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/

January 6, 20169 yr What are the admissionsame tax rates in other cities? Plenty of other cities have admission taxes, often much higher than Cleveland's. Cleveland does tax the ARTIST at 2%, which is in line with Cincinnati. More and more cities and states are doing this as a cash grab (along with pro athletes and location movie personnel). The 2% doesn't come into play as much as you think. A manager is not going to steer Taylor Swift away from a six figure night over 2%.....

The tax wasn't smacked down--only the method that the city used in calculating it for NFL players (based on total games played per year). If Taylor Swift plays a show in Cleveland, she still has 2% withheld from her payment. Likewise, NFL players are still having it withheld, just on a different method of calculation.
