WOW! Wade Oval Wednesday 2018 schedule (photos)

Posted May 02, 2018 at 07:00 AM | Updated May 02, 2018 at 08:32 AM

From a few hundred people per week the first year, WOW has gone on to attract more than 5,000 on any given night last summer. The Carlos Jones show brought in more than 8,000 WOWers. Jones returns to the Oval June 27.

WOW will run from 6 to 9 p.m. each week. In addition to live music, two weeks will feature movies. The week of June 27 will also feature fireworks. And for the first time, local makers will sell handmade goods at WOW on August 15.

I like the booking, it's a good mix. I wish Edgewater Live didn't bring in so many cover bands.

Just a little over two months to go until Painesville's annual "big event." But alas, I doubt that Olivier will be making a reappearance since he decamped from Cleveland and defected to the Nets. However, certainly an equally talented local yokel will be found to serve as MC this year. Or maybe not :(

41699654901_6c1d3e57ae_c.jpg

I don't wanna say this event has gone downhill, but it seems to have lost some focus since its longtime organizer resigned a couple of years ago (I think it's now being run "by committee," as the saying goes). But despite the usual gaggle of recycled Cleveland area acts (and I don't think they even get the best of those) and geezery tribute/cover bands (presumably meant to appeal to my particular demographic--i.e. old people), there are a couple of bright spots, including a quirky and talented San Francisco group called Royal Jelly Jive, who will be the last act on Friday night's bill (10:45 pm - 12:15 am). But please keep the noise down. People in Painesville aren't accustomed to staying up so late--

^^ Carlos Jones is top notch. I'm not going to comment on the other acts ;-)

I don't how it seems to have slipped so much. Up until a couple of years ago they were getting some acts that, though not famous by any means, had a bit of a regional following. To be honest, I don't know much about Cleveland bands, but Tropidelic was there regularly until recently. Don't know if you care for them, but apparently they've gained somewhat of a national following, and each year there were at least a couple of groups in that category. Another SF group (much more well-known), the Monophonics, was there a few years ago (which I suspect may be a connection to Royal Jelly Jive's appearance). But after all, it is a free event, and the bands are sponsored by local businesses who don't have tons of money. I remember reading a while back that the event gets (allegedly) hundreds of applications from bands interested in appearing. Kind of makes you wonder who they reject :(  One time on their facebook page I read a complaint from a woman that they were booking too many out-of-state acts, and wondered why "local" talent wasn't being given a chance. By local, she must have meant groups in a 5 mi. radius of Painesville, and proceeded to recommend some band that she hears on the weekends at some dive bar in Perry. She must be one of the people on the selection committee-- lol  But I guess any complaints are irrelevant, since the claim is that upwards of 75,000 people attend over the 3 days, as long as they make repeated trips to the beer tent.

Yeah, I just looked at the schedule and there are 10 alcohol company logos featured. By the way, Party in the Park is also a family-oriented event, with lots of activities for kids, so don't leave them at home!

Postscript to Painesville Party in the Park--did you write these comments, surfohio? lol. wow, I thought my remarks were harsh, but apparently this really sucked this year. It started out with the first comment on facebook strategically posted just as it was about to start on Friday, and went downhill today. My apologies for promoting it :(. Maybe next year they should just rename it Festival of Cheesy Cover Bands, Part II

Christopher Peters "I hope the festival goes well this year. I have to say I am really disappointed in the band lineup this year. There is not 1 band i am interested in hearing. The festival used to be full of up and coming regional and local ORIGINAL bands, that made it a unique destination to discover and enjoy new music. I used to look forward every year to discovering new bands Now, for the most part, it has become just like any other local town festival with cover and tribute bands. It is no longer a MUSIC FESTIVAL. What once was a great MUSIC festival has now become nothing more than place to drink, socialize and listen to cover bands just like any bar in the area on any given night in Northeast Ohio. I hope you will consider getting this event back to A true MUSIC FESTIVAL, which I would be glad to participate in the booking of such event. Band applications can easily be obtained using Sonicbids or other band booking web sites."

this is the previous organizer replying to someone defending the lineup (and on it goes...)-

Gabe Cicconetti "Gregory Boehnlein I disagree 100%. having been a major part of the event from 2008-2016 the music is what made the event and the draw of the people. not because we booked bands that people KNEW, but rather because people KNEW they could come see quality acts, both local, regional, and national, that they may have not heard of. Over the 15+ years that the event grew, especially the last 3 or 4 I was there where it grew exponentially we were recognized not for booking familiar bar bands but rather quality acts that toured both internationally and locally. I cannot tell you how many people, mind you people that I never met that complimented our organization for putting on a REAL music festival that differed from all the other community fest in the area because of the quality and variety of acts. People to this day still tell me how happy they were to find this or that act at our event, how they bought all their CDs, or went to Florida to see them etc etc. we were even covered in the Southwest in-flight magazine as things to do in Ohio, the quality and variety of music being one."

Andre Webb "I have been coming to this event since I moved to Painesville about 6 years ago. I seriously thought I found a gem when I first stopped up to check it out. Not many bands I had ever heard of, but they rocked!. Listen, I seriously never do reviews but I had to. What has happened? The music last year was so so, but this year?? wow. seriously, you guys used to do mostly original bands but now it's no different than the St Gabes fest I went to. Like almost ALL cover bands now? I don't get it, but please fix it for next year"

Kevin Davis "Andre, I wouldn't have a clue. Maybe they struggled to get sponsors is the only thing I could assume, but I would cut the live streaming and stuff before I added a DJ anywhere. Like I said, a joke. Poor decision making. And as Gabe points Out, having worked with Pam Harting for many years, I know how hard this event is and what it takes but I just considered this lineup a failure."

There were far too many festivals this past weekend, and the oppressive heat didn't help.  My business was at two events, and both were down significantly from last year.  The reps for one winery/brewery told me they were stretched out across 5 different wine or beer themed events in NEO over the weekend.  It's insane, and a recipe for none of the events to succeed and grow.

^^ Carlos Jones is top notch. I'm not going to comment on the other acts ;-)

I'm sorry the event sucked. But silver lining, I am glad to see some pushback against the cover bands. Nothing says "we are culturally irrelevant and out of the loop" more than a disproportionately high amount of cover bands.

I could see it if NEO was some cultural desert. It certainly isn't. There are so many really good original acts plus up and coming touring bands that love playing in Ohio.

Well, I would think the event's promoters would be trying to get a younger audience also. Nothing says "old" like cover bands, even good ones, if there is such a thing. I'm old and even I don't want to see these! Never mind that 99.9% of indie/alternative (I don't know what the current genres are) bands sound like crap too, but 20-somethings are actually going to show up for them. No one ever said that this event was another Pitchfork Festival (isn't that they super-hip one in Chicago? Someone help me out lol), but this was ridiculous. Like I had indicated, it's a community run festival in a small town, but it had gained a reputation for booking some high quality, unusual bands with an original sound. Hopefully they'll get it together for next year. Come to think of it, it's Painesville. So maybe not.

I just heard the Night Market in Chinatown is/was cancelled for all of 2018, but is supposed to be back for 2019. That was a great event. Anyone know why it was cancelled this year?

https://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2018/07/night_market_cleveland_cancels.html

"Last year we had support of St. Clair-Superior Development Corporation and this year we are independent," event organizer Josh Maxwell told The Plain Dealer last month. "We mutually decided because Night Market had grown so quickly and requires a lot of resources, structurally and financially it would be better if St. Clair Superior was able to focus on other community projects."

The non-profit got their nonprofit 501c3 status later than hoped for, and weren't able to actively seek grants and other funds for this year. They organized an IndieGOGO Community Crowdfunding Campaign last month, asking for $30,000 to help fund the year.

"It takes $30,000 per month to put on a market. We're asking for $10,000 for three markets from the community," Maxwell said. They received only $2,105 however, and this week made the decision that Night Market could not go on.

has anyone seen Hamilton in Cleveland? or plan to? Reviews? just wondering :(

I saw it on Broadway last year and am attending at PHS this coming weekend.  Will try to report on the touring cast once finished!

Saw it in Chicago and still scrounging the streets for tix at PHS

has anyone seen Hamilton in Cleveland? or plan to? Reviews? just wondering :(

Did you get a chance to see it in NY eastvillagedon[/member]

^well well, you're really in an elite group! I guess it's gotten pretty good reviews in Cleve. Was Lin-Manuel Miranda in it when you saw it? (or you could just watch my high school's Hamilton medley from last year--lol)

Saw it in Chicago and still scrounging the streets for tix at PHS

I am trying to find tickets too.  I finally got my infinity mirrors tix but not going until September.  <Sigh>

Saw Hamilton yesterday. Not the greatest thing I’ve ever seen at the theatre, but still very, very good. Much more irreverent than I expected. Which was a pleasant surprise.

My hovercraft is full of eels

has anyone seen Hamilton in Cleveland? or plan to? Reviews? just wondering :(

Did you get a chance to see it in NY eastvillagedon[/member]

nah, I really don't go to much theater anymore, and after all the hype I knew I could really never afford it. I remember when $100 for a top seat was considered ridiculous, much less 5X+ that! How much are they asking in Cleveland? I was surprised to see such a long run though. Don't B'way shows normally last only a week or so? But Hamilton is there for 6 weeks, right? Are they scalping tickets yet ;D

Time for the Sparx City Hop August 18th

It includes access to and tour of the Veterans Memorial Bridge and Subway Station

It requires signing a waiver, however. Sign that waiver here: https://bit.ly/2bf2rep

BTW: DCA would like to remind SPARX City Hop hoppers that waivers are MANDATORY to access the Veterans Memorial Bridge and Subway Station and parking will NOT be available on site!

InCuya Music Festival enjoys a stunning inaugural in downtown Cleveland

CLEVELAND, Ohio - This year's installment of the World Series of Rock fe . . .

Wait, that wasn't the World Series of Rock. What was on Malls B and C of downtown Cleveland Saturday - the first of two days of live music - was the inaugural InCuya Music Festival.

It's too early to say whether the festival will live up to the legend status of the WSOR, which ran from 1974 to 1980. But it is not too early - by a long shot - to declare the InCuya Music Festival a success.

The two grassy knolls in downtown Cleveland were designed for something like this - and honestly, should and probably will be used for other events, based on the reception fans gave the brainchild of Cleveland Concert Company.

Arial views I saw showed what appeared to be sparse attendance.  That could have been timing.

But comparing it to WOSR?  Really?  Every band that played WOSR except perhaps the earliest of openers was already headlining arenas in their own right.

I’m here now and it’s pretty packed. You’re also talking about 2 stages. It got more busy later in the day yesterday.

Here now and went yesterday. Place was packed after dark last night. Looking like the same tn, as SZA and the Avett Browthers are by far the biggest draws

I'm excited to see a large festival happen in Cleveland (couldn't go, had family obligations) I had doubted that this would ever happen since the music festival craze has become slightly saturated, including in the midwest (sorry, Chicago beat us to it first with P4K and lollapalooza); Rock on the range in columbus (metal, since 2007); Detroit Electronic Music Festival (since 99ish); bunbury in cincy since 2012; and each of those festivals are regional draws.

(https://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2016/03/have-we-reached-peak-festival.html) (I'll try not to be a debbie downer, they definitely have their downsides as well).

That said, I was a little surprised and disappointed to hear that demand for tickets was such that The Clinic sent out an email to employees on Wednesday (I only know that main campus employees received it, I don't know anyone offsite) offering 2 free tickets to InCuya (good for only 1 day, didn't include rock hall entry).

On the otherhand, there is another music festival in Northeast Ohio that draws 60k+ each year - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alive_Festival in Mineral City ;)

https://www.mwcd.org/news/2010/07/19/more-than-60000-fans-enjoy-alive-festival-at-atwood-lake-park

It's not too often I see pics of CLE and instantly wish I was there. Seeing the pics of the festival made me really wish I was there.

It was nice. Festival vibe with good crowds without having to deal with the "I'm here to experiment with molly and pass out on the lawn" sort of people you see at Lolapalooza or Bonnaroo

72 of America's best sailors take on Cleveland in U.S. Sailing's Hinman Trophy championship

By Laura Johnston, RocktheLake | Posted September 29, 2018 at 06:49 AM | Updated September 29, 2018 at 06:52 AM

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Think of it as a combination of soccer, rugby and chess – six sailboats at a time.

Team sail racing is the most dynamic of sailing events, and its U.S. Sailing national championship is in Cleveland this weekend. That means 12 top teams are duking it out at the Old Coast Guard Station for the George R. Hinman Trophy and the chance to enter the 2019 World Sailing Team Racing Championship.

The College of Charleston team -- the defending college sailing champs -- called the Old Coast Guard Station fantastic.

Sailors from the San Diego said they could be persuaded to become Browns fans.

“This is just incredible for Cleveland,” Patterson said. “The goal here by having this event is to showcase Cleveland, the Cleveland Harbor, the Foundry and Lake Erie to the U.S, and the rest of the world and show everybody that we can host some of the greatest racing in the world.”

i dk what happened to the i love cle thread so posting here — i went to see a book event after work friday at the cutting room in manhattan for fran and jules belkin, the legendary cle rock promoters. they found a bunch of old merch in storage like old rock tees shirts and stuff, so fran made a cool book out of it. they told some interesting stories and signed books. ispoke to them both, very nice people. lots of classic era rocker people stopped by to say hello. i chatted with somebody from rush management and the drummer from trans siberian orchestra and they were very grateful to the belkins.

they probably already did a book event in cle, but if not definitely look for it.

Popular Night Market Cleveland returns to Old Chinatown after year hiatus

Updated 9:39 AM; Today 8:57 AM

By Laura DeMarco, The Plain Dealer

Cleveland, Ohio – Night Market Cleveland is back. After a year hiatus, the popular Taiwanese-style monthly summer market will return to Cleveland's Old Chinatown at Rockwell Avenue and East 21st Street on one Friday a month in June, July, August and September.

For three years, Night Market was one of Cleveland’s most popular and unique events. It began with just a few hundred attendees per month in 2015, and ended up attracting more than 20,000 attendees some nights in 2017 with its unexplored location, artful mix of locally made goods and foods from more than 120 vendors, music, dance and other entertainment.

ahh, time flies. Just three weeks until Painesville Party in the Park--July 19, 20 & 21

How do they find these groups? At least it's better than the usual surfeit of late middle age tribute bands presumably meant to appeal to one-foot-in-the grave baby boomers (like me  lol) -- 7/19 @8:30 pm.
