maybe it's a New Orleans "thing."  Just a note: If anyone attends Party in the Park don't expect the crowd to be anywhere near as attractive as the one in the video. It's Painesville  ?

just thought I would thrown in a last minute plug for Party in the Park. Don't let the heat deter you. Isn't that why they invented the beer tent? This year at least brings in a few promising new voices, including an interesting and not easily classifiable Cuban band, the Sweet Lizzy Project (now Nashville-based--on 7/20 @5:30pm); kind of a jazzy hip-hop group from Akron (not being the hippest person on earth I probably totally misidentified the genre), Red Rose Panic (7/20 @1:00pm); and a Cincinnati band called Slymar (7/21 @4:30pm), if anyone's heard of them (good? bad? unprintable reaction? lol). Runs until midnight Sunday

Just learned of this; could be interesting:

Undesign the Redline

"Starting July 12th, you’re invited to join us and experience the Undesign the Redline Exhibit at our administrative offices at 4019 Prospect Ave. in Cleveland. Undesign the Redline is an interactive exhibit exploring the history of race, class and U.S. housing policy, and how this legacy of inequity and exclusion continues to shape our communities. The exhibit seeks to spark a public discourse on how discriminatory federal policies from the 1930s continue to impact Cleveland neighborhoods today."

I've visited it; and it's worth attending. Many of us who are history nerds may already be familiar with a lot of the topics that are mentioned (redlining, covenants, zoning, etc) but it's worth going. You could spend anywhere from 20 minutes to 2 hours depending on how much reading that you want to do.

How Cleveland became center of Content Marketing World

By Mary Kilpatrick, cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Content marketing reimagines the relationship between companies and their customers. And each September, Cleveland becomes the center of the booming industry — an orange-hued hub of learning, networking and fun — during Content Marketing World, the largest recurring business-to-business event in Cleveland.

The 9th annual conference, Sept. 3-6 at Cleveland’s Huntington Convention Center, is expected to generate about $3 million in economic impact, with attendees from at least 49 countries.

Top national brands like Marriott, Microsoft, Dell and Walmart send talent. Big names like Tina Fey, William Shatner and, this year, Mindy Kaling give the keynote.

Nice article. Hopefully the convention stays in Cleveland.

Looks like a cool event. Cross-posted in the 'I Love CLE' thread as well.

LEGACY CITIES: CONTINUITY AND CHANGE AMID DECLINE AND REVIVAL

BOOK RELEASE FORUM

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 17, 2019  |  4 - 6 PM

Legacy cities, also commonly referred to as shrinking, or post-industrial cities, are places that have experienced sustained population loss and economic contraction. In the United States, legacy cities are those that are largely within the Rust Belt that thrived during the first half of the 20th century. In the second half of the century, these cities declined in economic power and population leaving a legacy of housing stock, warehouse districts, and infrastructure that is ripe for revitalization. This volume explores not only the commonalities across legacy cities in terms of industrial heritage and population decline, but also their differences. Legacy Cities poses the questions: What are the legacies of legacy cities? How do these legacies drive contemporary urban policy, planning and decision-making? And, what are the prospects for the future of these cities? Contributors primarily focus on Cleveland, Ohio, but all Rust Belt cities are discussed.

Open to the public and free to attend.

Ah! I missed this, did you attend?

^I had it on my calendar so I wouldn't miss it. But then I had a schedule conflict and couldn't make it. I hope they video taped it---I know they video at least some of the forums held at that space.

legacy cities cities seems like a better way to put it than shrinking/post-industrial/rust-belt cities. glad to see that. the latter seem like very out-dated terms.

This is hardly a Cleveland festival when it's not even in the same county as Cleveland. Lol I guess even the music artists prefer the suburbs over Cleveland proper. Don't blame them.

Sofar Sounds turns up the volume to make Cleveland a full-time city

Jen Jones Donatelli - Jan. 29, 2020

"...Cleveland will become one of Sofar Sounds’ “full-time” cities starting in February—making the city one of just 27 full-time cities out of 444 total Sofar spots around the world. The designation will ramp up the amount of shows from one or two to at least 10 each month. Designed as intimate performances held in unconventional venues, each Sofar Sounds show features a lineup of three acts playing four songs each."

The Birth of Punk in Cleveland, Akron & Kent

Date And Time

Thu, October 8, 2020
7:00 PM – 8:00 PM EDT
Add to Calendar
Location: Online Event

About this Event

You already knew Cleveland was the birthplace of Rock & Roll. There's a sign out front of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame that says so. Everyone knows Alan Freed invented the term and hosted the first ever rock concert in Cleveland.

But tonight, one local band, Vanity Crash, will tell the story of a whole lot of other local bands that were inventing punk rock right here in Cleveland, Akron & Kent, Ohio, years before you heard it in London or New York. Tonight you'll hear epic tunes by bands like Rocket From The Tombs, Dead Boys, The Pagans, Devo and The Pretenders. And you'll hear some awesome songs by Vanity Crash. Plus some artists that influenced all of us, like Iggy Pop, The Zombies, T. Rex and David Bowie. Many of them are enshrined in the Rock Hall, and many of them will never be. But we'll promise you this: tonight you'll hear the music that influenced generations.

Featuring rare video and exclusive interviews with the artists who were there, presenter Thomas Mulready lays it out for you, one fascinating chapter after the other. Tonight's show focuses on Cleveland, Akron & Kent's seminal role in the early development of punk, with influences that extend around the globe and reverberate today. Get there early for the livestream and don't blink. You won't want to miss a beat.

did anybody go to wonderstruck? I just watched a youtube video of AJR's performance (of course I have no idea who any of these people are since I'm old), and I really tried, I did, to understand their appeal. It was hard to get past this group's antics and histrionics and concentrate on their "talent." Likewise, an 18-year old Canadian singer by the name of Tate McRae was getting a lot of cheers from her crowd of similarly aged young women, which at least served to distract from her completely mediocre singing. I don't understand how these people gained such large followings. How much were the tickets for this?? Like I said, I'm old lol

I went Saturday and there were some good and not as good performances. My favorites were Third Eye Blind and Shaed. It was a great festival and put on well by the promoters.

okay, I just watched a couple of "official" Third Blind Eye videos and you're right, they are good. I'll try to investigate more of these bands later. The only group on the entire schedule I was familiar with was the Floorwalkers who I believe started out in Cleveland and are now (I think) based in Columbus, but despite their talent (IMO), by this point in their career will probably never get beyond their regional level of fame.☹️

I went on Sunday - AJR was high energy, but Trombone Shorty was more my speed and he had a super talented group with him.

This is happening today on Clifton at W 117th.   It will likely be a pretty big traffic mess with the Lake Ave and Edgewater Drive construction happening on top of a sunny Sunday at Edgewater park!

Immersive Van Gogh announces opening date and location in Cleveland

https://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/2021/08/immersive-van-gogh.html

After seeing the FB ads for months, I was starting to wonder if this was actually happening, but here it is. This article makes it seem like quite the show. The initial run will be through February, so there’s time to get reviews before committing. The tickets are pretty expensive ($50 peak times, $40 off peak).

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Immersive Van Gogh, the hotly anticipated interactive art gallery featuring animated versions of Dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh’s creations, has finally announced its location and opening day in Cleveland.

The immersive art experience announced back in April, will take over a warehouse building at 850 E. 72nd St. in Cleveland, now known as “Lighthouse Artspace Cleveland,” beginning Sept. 22.

The show has already sold 100,000 tickets so far, according to Corey Ross, a co-producer of Immersive Van Gogh.

When is the last time I-71 turned a profit?

^ yeah crazy prices for that van gogh thing, i wonder if it's worth it? maybe??

i actually found out about it here in ny while on a water taxi as i saw an banner ad on the east river on a warehouse building for it that i think it is in.

then i saw another ad on i think the building it is in in los angeles too.

and so i looked it up and see it's happening in other other cities.

i guess they can do multiple places as it's projections.

we have had several other 'projection experiences' like this one pop up in empty retail spaces around midtown this summer.

i guess why not, if people like them ok -- might be kind of cool though.

actually there are two different ones in New York. I guess they're still going on. I didn't go, but funny review

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/06/09/arts/design/van-gogh-immersive-manhattan.html

"Like Vincent, I too suffer for my art, and so I attended both of them. If you are committed to trying one out, go to the east side, which has graphics of meaningfully greater sophistication. (Adult tickets range from about $36 to $55 and rise with various fees, supplements and hustles. MoMA is $25, and the Met is pay-what-you-wish for locals.) Whether you attend either or both you should bring a fully charged cameraphone; some might also enjoy a psychedelic supplement, and in fact the east side venue plans to install an absinthe bar later on. Sensuous selfie backdrops come well before intellectual engagement here, so you might as well make the most of it."
