did you ever want to write songs? this is a rare opportunity to hear music stories by one of the best, jimmy webb. i saw him a few years ago on a whim and really enjoyed it. he’s getting pretty old, so if you have any interest don’t leave that cake out in the rain, i would go:

An Evening With Jimmy Webb

Kent Stage

Kent, OH

Doors: 6:30pm

$35 to $45

Jimmy Webb – America’s Songwriter

Jimmy Webb’s songs are deeply embedded in our culture.  His catalog of music and lyrics spans multiple genres and appeals to all living generations.  He is always on the lists of the most important songwriters.  With songs including “Wichita Lineman”, “By the Time I Get to Phoenix”, “The Worst that Could Happen”, “MacArthur Park”, “Galveston”, “Didn’t We”, “All I Know”, “The Highwayman”, and “The Moon is a Harsh Mistress”, he is clearly beloved by the best voices and admired by songwriters everywhere.

Webb has been dubbed a modern-day Gershwin/Porter/Berlin and is a bona fide progenitor of the Great American Songbook.  Yet at the same time, he appeals directly and widely to the country/pop/rock/rap culture of today.

Webb’s music runs the spectrum of modern music genres: country, pop, rock, jazz, rap, heavy metal, new age, gospel, disco, EDM, classical—and more.  And his songs have been recorded by the foremost interpreters of these genres.

In his live shows, Jimmy’s intimate style is juxtaposed against his stature and exquisite piano skills. His humor and storytelling create such a personal atmosphere that the audience cries, laughs and sings as if in the presence of a long lost relative here for a brief visit.

Jimmy walked with giants and regales audiences with stories of Frank Sinatra, Elvis, Louis Armstrong, Art Garfunkel, Linda Ronstadt, Harry Nilsson, Richard Harris, Glen Campbell, and More!

Cleveland Current Playlist Features Local Music: Listen

"Whatever kind of listener you are, there's something in Cleveland's music scene for you.

We've captured a range of artists in this month's Cleveland Current Spotify playlist. Here, find a new single from current America's Got Talent contestant Summer Rios, a spotlight on rapper and vocalist WesWill's latest album Here For A Good Time, or a taste of Rusted Heart's punky new album Broken Pieces That Once Fit Together."

Minneapolis indie-punks Thank You, I’m Sorry will release their new album Growing In Strange Places on September 29 via Count Your Lucky Stars. Three songs are out now–“Autonomy Shop,” “Chronically Online,” and “This House”–the first two of which show off the band’s knack for mixing fuzzy guitars with personable lyrics (and a hint of Midwest emo), while “This House” finds them moving into bittersweet jangle pop territory. TYIS also announced a fall tour with Kerosene Heights and Mint Green (varying by date).  All dates are listed below.

Kerosene Heights also released their very good debut album Southeast of Somewhere earlier this year on No Sleep.

PETE DAVIDSON: 2023 TOUR DATES

Oct 15 Agora Theatre Cleveland, OH

Baroness have announced a series of acoustic in-stores, beginning at Rough Trade NYC on September 15 and also hitting Poughkeepsie, Baltimore, Richmond, Raleigh, Charleston, and Atlanta. The band says:

John Baizley: “Independent music stores are a huge part of our musical background. We discovered so much music in them as teenagers; they undoubtedly had a profound effect on all of our development as young artists (they still do). We are thrilled to be able to travel around the East Coast this September to play stripped down sets in some of our favorite shops.”

Gina Gleason: “We’re really excited for the opportunity to play these intimate performances and to connect with the fans as well as the record shop owners and operators who have been so incredibly supportive of us over the years.”

Baroness also have a new video out for “Shine,” and a proper tour coming up that hits NYC on November 29 at Webster Hall with Sheer Mag and Imperial Triumphant. All dates (with tons of different openers, varying by date) listed below. Their new album Stone comes out on September 15.

The Birthday Party (Nick Cave) documentary in theaters this fall: watch the trailer

Bill Pearis

August 29, 2023

The Birthday Party, Nick Cave‘s ’70s/’80s post-punk group with Rowland S Howard, Mick Harvey, Tracy Pewand Phill Calvert, are the subject of a new documentary that will be screening across North America starting in September.

Directed by Ian White and produced by Mick Harvey and Wim Wenders, Mutiny in Heaven tracks the band’s six-year life, from their start at The Boys Next Door in Melbourne, Australia to their relocation to London and eventual breakup, with many infamous live shows in between.

The film features exclusive interviews with Cave, Harvey, Howard (who died in 2009) and Calvert, as well as rare performance footage, photographs and more.

Here’s the official synopsis:

Narrated exclusively by the original band members, Mutiny in Heaven delves deep into a band’s psyche, chronicling how Nick Cave and his school friends startled audiences with their confrontational performances, primal screams, outlaw gothic horror, and anarchic lifestyle. Featuring never-before-seen personal footage from band members, dynamic animation sequences, and jaw-dropping concert clips, the film provides a sweaty, electrifying front-row seat to one of the most legendary live acts. It’s destined to be an instant documentary classic. The film is the first fully authorized telling of The Birthday Party.

You can watch Mutiny in Heaven‘s trailer and a clip from the film below.

The documentary is touring around the US around the same time as Nick’s solo/ book tour.

Anyone else been to the Roxy at Mahall's yet? Was just there for Slowdive and while they were incredible, that venue has some serious issues.

Felt way oversold, folks were packed like sardines and many were outside the main floor area and could not see the stage. On the top that it was hot and humid as hell, a problem that also afflicts the other concert room.

has anyone ever heard of this singer? She's Icelandic-Chinese (yes, that's correct) and has a throwback sound that's a pleasing antidote to some of those grossly overrated performers (initials T.S.) that unfortunately we can't escape hearing about, even as we take great pains trying to avoid their generic, overproduced music. Anyway she's in Cleveland Oct. 24 (only Ohio appearance but it looks like her entire tour is sold out)

via bv — Less than a month ago, MIKE, Wiki, and The Alchemist released an albumtogether. Then Wiki announced a new album this week and now MIKE has surprise-released one. It’s called Burning Desire, and it’s a lengthy, 24-song reminder that MIKE’s hazy, abstract rap never goes out of style. In classic MIKE fashion, he brings stream-of-consciousness screeds to sun-kissed jazz and soul samples, and it all swirls together into one mind-bending concoction. Guests include Earl Sweatshirt, Larry June, Liv.e, Niontay, El Cousteau, Lila Ramani of Brooklyn psych-rock band Crumb, UK singer/songwriter mark william lewis, and more.

we freakin love ty segall aka the west coast jack white, so this ought to be good --

Meatbodies, the Ty Segall-adjacent band led by Chad Ubovich, have announced a new album, Flora Ocean Tiger Bloom ,which will be out March 8 via In the Red.  The album was made through a lot of personal upheaval. “A lot happened with this record – it took me five years, I was out of a band, I had a drug problem, the album almost didn’t happen, the pandemic made it almost not happen again, and then in the end I almost died in the hospital, lost my house, and had to learn to walk again,” Ubovich says. “It’s been quite a road, but I could not be more thrilled with the final output. I guess the juice was worth the squeeze?”

Like a lot of groups born of this scene, Meatbodies seem to have abandoned the garage, and in their case, are going a distinct ’90s alt-rock route. You can hear that on first single “HOLE,” that brings to mind Smashing Pumpkins and Tripping Daisy. “That was one of the first songs I wrote, and I think it’s really indicative of that time,” says Ubovich. “How I was thinking and feeling and what I wanted to accomplish with this LP before I even knew it.”

Kaonashi — 2023/2024 Tour Dates

with Mugshot:

04/02 Cleveland, OH – The Foundry

via bv --

Kaonashi’s Favorite Albums of 2023

Pao (drums):

Hail the Sun – Divine Inner Tension
Maybe it’s cuz we toured with them a lot this year, but this album really spoke to me and the songwriting and playing is absolutely killer front to back album. Constantly playing in the Kao Van.

Elodie – Ok. Respira
I’ve been getting super into Italian pop this year and Elodie released a great ALBUM along with great singles. The transitions between songs on the album are often seamless and which always makes for a good album playthru.

Alex (guitar):

Sleep Token – Take Me Back to Eden
The way this record was released really grabbed me. They had this cryptic message that the fans uncoded to unveil song names, and as the fans figured out the song names the singles were released. And each single gave us a new character to focus in on. On top of being great songs with insane production these extra Easter eggs give me something to come back to.

The Zenith Passage – Datalysium
This album reinvigorated tech-death for me. I had started to find most tech-death to be pretty boring, but this record is filled with so many catchy yet technical riffs with insane production that I’m sure I’ll be playing it for years to come.

Siddy (guitar):

Suffocation – Hymns From The Apocrypha
I picked Suffocation’s Hymns From The Apocrypha as one of my favorite records of the year. This record reminds me of why I started playing guitar.Terrence and Charlie absolutely killed it.

Dying Fetus – Make Them Beg For Death
The new Dying Fetus record is absolutely perfect front to back. This band is how my brain envisions death metal and I cannot get over how good the production is.

Peter (vocals):

Shed Theory – Authority
Modern music has an severe lack of originality, so when I first heard this I was instantly hooked. Experimental rap with lots of obscure references and weird production.

Cattle Decapitation – Terrasite
As a metal vocalist, it’s hard to find bands with a voice I’ve never heard. This album takes Cattle’s extreme sound and pushes it even further. I love listening to it for new ideas.

Ryne (bass):

Invent, Animate – Heavener
I picked Invent, Animate’s Heavener because the overall theme of the record resonated deeply with me based on what I was going through personally. The message behind each track served as a beacon of inspiration for me and will become a timeless classic in my playlist.”

Entheos – Time Will Take Us All
Entheos’ Time Will Take Us All made the cut for me personally because it’s one of the most interesting progressive metal records I’ve ever heard. For me, stuff like that can become a bit redundant to listen to, but this record scratched every itch while keeping me in a vice grip. 10/10 record.
