May 15, 200916 yr http://www.morningjournal.com/articles/2009/05/15/entertainment/mj1030915.txt Hessler Street Fair Old hippies don't fade away; they just get together annually at the Hessler Street Fair, a forum for musical performances, poetry reading and the exhibition and sale of art by local artists in a one-time "flower-power" community from the late 1960s and early 1970s. The fair, free and open to the public, is one block north of the Mayfield road and Euclid Avenue intersection in University Circle, open noon to dusk Saturday and Sunday. Families will feel welcome at Harmony Park, an interactive cooperative children's play area within the fairs boundaries. Children will have the opportunity to create a project they can take home. The Hessler Street Fair is sponsored by Hessler Neighborhood Association, whose mission is to restore, preserve and improve the neighborhood it serves. Hessler Road and Hessler Court were dedicated as Cleveland's first Landmark District in 1975. For general information go to the Web site at www.hessler.org, or call 216-556-3716.

June 11, 200916 yr Since this thread is heavily underutilized...thought I'd post this here. Other cities really promote their Hard Rock Cafe's...for better or worse, Cleveland really does not. Nonetheless, cool event this Sunday: http://www.clevescene.com/c-notes/archives/2009/06/11/hard-rock-caf-throws-a-rockin-benefit Hard Rock Café Throws a Rockin' Benefit Posted by Michael Gallucci on Thu, Jun 11, 2009 at 2:18 PM A group of cool local bands and artists have teamed up to participate in a fundraiser happening at the Hard Rock Café on Sunday. Artists like indie-rockers Ghost Town Trio, former Faith No More singer Chuck Mosley, industrial rockers This I a Shakedown, Miami University-educated singer-guitarist Dave Ritz and alternative heroes Pale Hollow (pictured) will play outside the Hard Rock Café as part of an all-day street festival that starts at 11 a.m. Many of the bands are affiliated with the locally based Reversed Image Unlimited label. Tickets are $10 and proceeds go directly to the Cleveland Police Athletic League, a 70-year-old program that provides recreational, athletic and educational activities for young people. PAL is the only program in the country that provides daily interaction with police officers in the community and last year Cleveland PAL police officers interacted with over 10,000 inner-city Cleveland area youth, many from minority and low income families. —Jeff Niesel

June 16, 200915 yr Gypsy rocker Goran Bregovic turns Cleveland's Ohio Theatre into rockin' Balkan party by John Petkovic / Plain Dealer Reporter Tuesday June 16, 2009, 3:02 PM No one could confuse PlayhouseSquare with a Balkan bar. But Goran Bregovic came close. On Monday, June 15, the rocker-turned-Gypsy-bandleader transformed the Ohio Theatre into a Balkan dance party as part of the Cleveland Museum of Art's Viva! and Gala Around Town Series. Horns blared. Singers wailed. And a single rhythm bass drum kept it all driving. More at Cleveland.com http://www.cleveland.com/arts/index.ssf/2009/06/gypsy_rocker_goran_bregovic_tu.html

July 2, 200915 yr IngenuityFest returns to Playhouse Square IngenuityFest, Cleveland's annual showcase of arts and technology, returns for its fifth year July 10 through 12 with an extraordinary mix of artists, performances and high-tech wizardry that will truly electrify the streets and spaces of Playhouse Square. The 2009 Festival opens at 4 p.m. July 10, with The Big Bang, a spectacular drumming event conducted by the internationally renowned Marcus Santos and depicting in irresistible rhythms the drum's evolution from prehistoric times to the electronic beats of today. Hundreds of drummers, including the legendary Jamey Haddad; Carlos Jones; and East Cleveland's Shaw High School Marching Band, which performed in Beijing, China, as part of pre-game 2008 Olympics events, will shake the ground beneath Star Plaza, where IngenuityFest's 2009 centerpiece installation, the Tesla Coil Orchestra, will keep festival activity crackling every evening of the weekend with a performance called "Bolts." In "Bolts," which is coordinated by Case Western Reserve University engineering alumnus Ian Charnas, the Tesla Coil Orchestra will transform "lightning bolts" emitted from a tall aerial into musical sounds played by local rock band KB and the Riptides while local dancers perform choreography by Jenita McGowan. "This will wow people," said IngenuityFest executive artistic director James Levin. "And it's Cleveland- made." All around Star Plaza, in the storefronts, alleys and signature buildings of Playhouse Square, festival visitors will find an amazing array of technology-infused art, music, dance, theater, video and family attractions. IngenuityFest 2009 features outstanding artists ranging from nationally famed performance artist Tim Miller, in a piece about gay rights called "US," to San Francisco's J.D. Beltran and Scott Minneman, whose creation, "The Magic Story Table," turns visual geographic-search technology into neighborhood exploration and storytelling fun for families. To its list of music offerings, Ingenuity will add for 2009 The Electronic Café, a new venue on the first floor of the Sterling Building featuring electronic events including "Card 11," a piece orchestrated by New York audio artist Ryan Smith; the masterwork mutantrumpet by Ben Neill and Bill Jones, also from New York; and appearances by local audio artist Ryan Ramer and several local DJs. July 10, 200915 yr From flying shoes to dance grooves, feel-good vibe dominates Vans Warped Tour's stop at Cleveland's Time Warner Cable Amphitheater by John Soeder / Plain Dealer Pop Music Critic Thursday July 09, 2009, 11:00 PM It's kind of like the swallows of San Juan Capistrano. Or the buzzards of Hinckley. When shoes go flying at Cleveland's Time Warner Cable Amphitheater, you know the Vans Warped Tour is back. The first airborne sneaker was spotted there at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, not long after the 15th annual installment of the punk roadshow came roaring to life. Other footwear soon followed. This year's edition of Warped had an unannounced "special guest," although the "surprise" appearance by Paramore may have been the worst-kept secret in town. July 10, 200915 yr Reminder, Ingenuity Festival and SuperCON begin tomorrow at 4 pm...wait, how's that going to effect rush hour out of the city!?! I will happily accept one traffic jam in exchange for a badass street festival. lol...it was sarcasm, but I think you understood that from me. Well, it's officially 4 pm and the festivites have begun!
July 10, 200915 yr Is anyone else having trouble with the website? It doesn't appear to be working. Which seems problematic for opening night ...
July 10, 200915 yr I caught the sarcasm, I was just trying to say something positive. I worked for Ingenuity a couple years ago and I really want it to take off. We need as many of these things as we can get!
July 10, 200915 yr As I sit here wearing my extremely fussy 6 week old baby in a wrap, I can hardly believe that I actually performed in the last 2 Ingenuity festivals. I can't even imagine attending it at this point, let alone ever doing any performing again. Oy.
July 13, 200915 yr I attended. It was really cool...very different than artwalks and other festivals. I loved the access to unused buildings, back alleys, and unfinished spaces I would never normally go into. The art was great, nothing I wanted to buy but looking at it was great. Some of the displays in the IDEA Center kept my attention for a long time. There was a google earth gadget that was very satisfying to use. There was also a video, 36 views of a bridge, that was captivating especially for a cleveland city fan. The music was just OK in my opinion, but I was just there a few hours saturday. The food was one notch above regualr fair food, but just one notch. The shops were similar to coventry street fest and the tremont art walk, but they were generally off the wall and worth stopping in. But the art and interactive tech displays did it for me. $10 well spent.
July 13, 200915 yr I was mildly disappointed. The music was a step back from before... it was all modern rock and bar-band material, when in past years they had more edgy stuff. It seems like they wanted to take the show more mainstream and believed funky jazz acts were scaring people away. That's speculation... don't know the back story. And like goteenb, I was only there for a few hours. But they had 4 stages so I saw several acts over that time... and most of them fell into this descrption. I'm not saying any of the music was bad, it wasn't, just that it was a little conventional given the festival's theme. I really like the way they use the alleys and random spaces. The setting is the best part about this event. I also enjoyed the * art show, which was extensive. Compared to past years I saw less technology and even less that was interactive. Ingenuity seems to be backing away from its original premise a bit. I was actually hoping to see more robot costumes this time, and maybe their lack was my biggest disappointment. There were some robots, and some tech displays, but I was hoping for something more immersive. They appear to be moving it in a more generic direction instead. Maybe they feel this will increase attendance long-term, and maybe they're right. Hard to say. One other thing... there was a guy in the Hanna theater doing an hour-long solo show about being gay. A warning, that none of his stories or humor would deviate from this premise, would have been helpful. Seemed like a nice funny guy who could put together a great show. But Ingenuity alienated some guests by letting them walk into that unawares. I'm no homophobe but I, and others, found it needlessly awkward... plus his Bush/Cheney/Iraq jokes were somewhat less than timely.
July 13, 200915 yr This was my first Ingenuity (on Saturday most of the day), and the event did not exceed my expectations. I felt like virtually all of the activities, performances, and displays I attended or saw sounded much greater and more exciting than they actually were. I was also disappointed by the music. It was slightly irritating that many of the same bands played both Friday and Saturday evenings. Something happened on Saturday evening whereby the Tesla Orchestra musicians that accompanies the Boltz show didn't make it. I don't understand how performers for the marquee (and most expensive and most publicized) event did not show up. Instead, we got a long delay, then the Boltz dancers dancing to surf rock that wasn't particularly unique or interesting. I was also a little miffed that everything seemed to start much later than scheduled. My girlfriend was disappointed that there were not more exhibits that integrated both art and technology, just a lot of things that did one or the other. It was really great to see hoards of people downtown for the festival, but I happen to side with what this blogger wrote last year.
July 13, 200915 yr As I sit here wearing my extremely fussy 6 week old baby in a wrap, I can hardly believe that I actually performed in the last 2 Ingenuity festivals. I can't even imagine attending it at this point, let alone ever doing any performing again. Oy. well as they say, the apple don't fall far from the tree!
July 14, 200915 yr The food was one notch above regualr fair food, but just one notch. Just out of pure curiousness, what other fairs do you attend that offer pasture raised dairy shakes, pasture raised beef hamburgers/chzburgers, and pastured beef lasagana? the food at that stand was incredible and i've never before seen anything like it. plz tell me which festivals feature that stand. many thanks!

July 14, 200915 yr @ the 'very angry' 327 & cd-cleveland ingenuity is difficult to market and can be difficult to attend b/c there is no core constituency that they are catering to (thank goodness) and you often don't get what you expect. perhaps by removing your expectations, you can better appreciate what is happening. easier said than done, but give it a try, before you give up. i thought this was the best ingenuity i've yet attended (my 3rd) and thought the art/tech collaborations (whatever the @#$)*@#$ that means) were muy interesante! re: music, the highlight for me was peach cake, late on fri night, fully pushing the envelope of audience participation in a 'rock' show.
July 15, 200915 yr Cleveland-bred hip-hop sensation Kid Cudi returns to his hometown July 17 for a sold-out House of Blues show by John Soeder / Plain Dealer Pop Music Critic Wednesday July 15, 2009, 10:21 AM LOCAL KID MAKES GOOD: "When you're a new artist, the most important thing is finding your sound," says Kid Cudi, seen here performing last week in Switzerland. October 25, 200915 yr i just saw leonard cohen at msg and it was awesome. really it was just stunning. three and half hours and all his many hits. the old guy is full of is amazingly energy. i last saw him in detroit at the fox over 15 yrs ago and i'd say he has even more energy now. definately a special show. well, he's cleveland tonight and coming to columbus after that -- dont miss the legend, sad to say, but he may not be back: DATE CITY VENUE Oct 25, 2009 8:00pm Cleveland, Ohio Allen Theatre Tickets on sale Aug 3 @ 11:00am, Purchase Oct 27, 2009 8:00pm Columbus, Ohio Palace Theatre Tickets on sale Aug 3 @ 10:00am, Purchase here's a review of our msg show: Oct 24 2009 12:33 PM ET Leonard Cohen at Madison Square Garden: The master at 75 by Simon Vozick-Levinson "I don’t know when we’ll be passing through here again,” he told the Madison Square Garden crowd early in last night’s set. “So I want to tell you that it is our intention to give you everything we’ve got tonight.” Leonard Cohen does not make empty promises. Backed by a tight folk-rock-jazz band of mostly gray-haired virtuosos, plus three otherworldly backup singers (including frequent collaborator Sharon Robinson), he played for nearly three hours. Cohen (pictured above at another recent show) hit the major peaks in his catalog along the way: “Suzanne,” “So Long, Marianne,” “Bird on the Wire,” “Famous Blue Raincoat,” “Chelsea Hotel #2,” “Hallelujah” (earning a standing ovation), “I’m Your Man,” “First We Take Manhattan” (of course!), “Everybody Knows,” “The Future,” “Anthem,” to name just a few utter classics. more: http://music-mix.ew.com/2009/10/24/leonard-cohen-concert-madison-square-garden/

November 18, 200915 yr I think that is going to be an amazing location for the Ingenuity Festival- it is just so unique, but also in many ways practical for that sort of event- it is covered, mostly level, linear.
November 19, 200915 yr I worry nobody will know about it and they will have far less attendance. I know it was really scattered before hand, but the "in your face" aspect of it since so many people could see it IMO helped draw attendees.
November 19, 200915 yr I like that admission will be free, though. We never went because we didn't want to pay the $$ just to look to see if anything interested us.
November 19, 200915 yr I worry nobody will know about it and they will have far less attendance. I know it was really scattered before hand, but the "in your face" aspect of it since so many people could see it IMO helped draw attendees. The Bridge Project was very well attended and many more people will know about Ingenuity Fest since it's an annual event. I could even see some events spreading down into Settler's Landing. This will be a great venue for Ingenuity Fest.

March 5, 201015 yr Great selection of flicks this year. I'll be working it again this year. Stop and say hi if you are there.
March 5, 201015 yr I was happy when I found out that I would be back in Cleveland for most of the festival. I picked up tickets about a week back for four films and will probably see a few more depending on what else is going on. If anyone didn't notice there is, I believe, at least one film being shown at the new Capitol Theatre. It is good to see CIFF take advantage of such a wonderful reclaimed space. Looking forward to another good time at CIFF.
