Repost from Cleveland vs. the World (http://clevelandplanner.blogspot.com/2010/03/cleveland-international-film-festival.html):

Have you bought your tickets to your favorite films for this years film festival? If not, you might want to do it soon. Some of the more popular films are already about to go in to 'stand-by' mode. If that doesn't motivate you to get your tickets now, perhaps these other bullets will get you off your keister:

This past Tuesday (03/09) the Cleveland Preview Party was held at Cadillac Ranch. In previous years, the local preview party would draw a decent crowd of roughly 300 film fans, staff and volunteers. By the morning of this years party there were nearly 600 RSVP's. I don't know what the final count was but  it would be a safe bet to guess it was over the 600 count.

The first day of member ticket sales this year doubled the amount sold on the same day last year.

Last years first day public ticket sales were roughly $18,000. This years first day public ticket sales hit a record $25,000.

This year's total ticket sales to date are up roughly 23% from last year.

Last year was already a record breaking season for the Film Festival. This year looks to be another one.

Well, the 34th Annual Cleveland Intl. Film Festival wrapped up last night. I'm disappointed to say our film was beaten out for the audience award by "Louder than a Bomb," an incredible story about slam poetry in inner city Chicago. It's been a real honor to be associated with CIFF. For those out there who don't know, this festival has an amazing international reputation which is well deserved. The staff and volunteers are so passionate and absolutely dedicated to the audience. I cannot say enough good things about it... I'm really proud that we can look forward to this event year after year.

Sorry to hear that surfohio, but I was hearing a lot of positive buzz about the film nonetheless.

From what I hear yesterday, the film festival estimates that it beat its attendance record yesterday during the 2:00 round ... And with two more rounds of full theaters after that, I imagine the final numbers are going to look great.

another year... another attendance record.  :)

Louder than a film festival: 34th CIFF wraps with awards, praise, a new attendance record, and a big night for documentaries

By Clint O'Connor, The Plain Dealer

March 29, 2010

Poetry, let alone high school poetry, is not supposed to outshine flashy films from around the globe. But "Louder Than a Bomb," a documentary about the inspiring teens of a huge poetry slam in Chicago, thrilled the audiences and judges at the 34th Cleveland International Film Festival.

The movie, which had its world premiere here, won both the Roxanne T. Mueller Audience Choice Award for best film, and the Greg Gund Memorial Standing Up Film Competition, which honors movies about social justice and activism, and includes a $5,000 prize for co-directors Jon Siskel and Greg Jacobs.

The 11-day festival, which screened more than 300 films from 84 countries, wrapped Sunday night with an awards reception around the fountain in Tower City Center. Attendance, at more than 71,000, was up seven percent from last year, and has more than doubled since 2003.

I wasn't at Sushi Rock, but I was at The Ritz last night and saw her - she was sitting at a table near us before her show.  She definitely had/has a big following!

My wife went complete with giant green eyelashes, she said the people watching was to die for...She also that the concert was great and that Gaga is the real deal. Now as for the people she went with, she didn't care for that much.  She said to remind her to say no the next time an acquaintance that you really don't know that well says, "You know I am cool. You should come to this cool concert with us. I am renting a limo."

I dont see GaGa.  I give her credit for using existing material to "invent" herself, but I dont think she has staying power.

My dad got talked into going to the concert on Saturday in St. Louis by his female coworkers.  Mind you, my dad is a 56 year old straight-laced (and straight) financial analyst........  We'll see what he has to say about it!

^ I saw a pretty varied audience.  From the guy dressed up (wrapped up?) in exclusively yellow caution tape to an older man dressed in slacks and dress shoes and a Lady Gaga concert t-shirt.

I just bought tix to CSN at Time Warner Amph.  Ugh, no wonder we don't go to concerts anymore, they are so $$$.

Hippie!

Just kidding. I love me some CSN. Last time I saw them (2005?-ish) Stephen Stills wasn't looking or sounding too good. I am not sure if he was having health issues that have since gotten better or what. Still sounded OK but it was just a noticable decline from just a few years earlier. I don't know if I am more amazed at how good D. crosby sounds or the fact that he is still alive. Really an amazing voice though, even before you realized he spent 15 or 20 years freebasing.Coke fumes have to play hell on your lungs and throat.

I am amazed that crosby is still alive as well, have you read any of his books?

I figure they won't sound as good as they used to, but also that this may be our last opportunity to see them and as dutiful hippies, we should fork over the cash.  But oy, when you add the babysitter to the ticket cost, this is going to be expensive.

That babysitter is always a kick in the gut. Hope you enjoy the concert.

I figure if you amortize the cost of the evening out over a whole year, it's not that much $. Since this is the only concert we'll go to all year and we've only had a babysitter one other time all year, all told it's not that much.  It's just hard when it's all in a big chunk.  We did start a "babysitter fund" jar at home but we keep having to dip into it for laundry, etc.

Greetings, all.

A few people who ride with Cleveland Critical Mass were inspired to start Yoga for the Masses.  Essentially, they get a whole bunch of people together to practice yoga in the northwest quadrant of Public Square from 7-8pm.  It's free and a certified teacher leads for about an hour.

It happens the first Friday of the month while the weather is nice, and the next installment will be taking place tonight (Friday, September 3).  Bring yourself and a mat or a blanket.  People of all skill levels and ability/disability are welcome to join.  The organizers are aiming for one hundred tonight.  (Last month was the inaugural session, and about fifty people joined...here's a video from WEWS Channel 5.)

For more info, please visit the Facebook event page here.

Exploring Cleveland culture: If you want to learn more about the history of cultures of Cleveland, there's now an app for that.

Mobile History Cleveland, an iPhone/iPad application, will be unveiled at this weekend's IngenuityFest 2010 downtown.

The app, designed by the Center for Public History + Digital Humanities at Cleveland State University, allows people to explore Cleveland history and the Cleveland Cultural Gardens while walking, biking or driving. Find the app at app.mobilehistorycleveland.org.

Only with my cell phone and they didn't turn out too great since it was dark out.  I'll see if I can get some tonight with an actual camera.

^I saw the test yesterday.  It's pretty impressive.  Can't wait to see it lit up at night.

Let's show how much water we have to waste for bragging rights. That's how this comes across to me.

Let's show how much water we have to waste for bragging rights. That's how this comes across to me.

We're not really wasting any water by doing this.  It's a closed loop.  We get the water from the lake, process it a little bit and then dump it back into the lake in a fancy manner.  We may be wasting energy (electricity to pump the water), but the art installation isn't really wasting any water at all.  Now, if we were pulling water from an aquifer and dumping it into a river then I would agree with you, but that's not the case here.

Let's show how much water we have to waste for bragging rights. That's how this comes across to me.

Except that this is water that needed to be flushed out of the mains anyway as a part of their scheduled maintenance. Like so:

The water will come from a 12” water main, which the division of water had planned to flush out anyway. Instead of running it into the gutter via fire hydrants, they’ll route it up the bridge, into a series of boxes that will serve as reservoirs, spilling off the side of the bridge in a wide cascade to the river.

I went today and it was pretty cool. Being new to the city it was cool to see the old subway and bridge! Ill prob head back again tomorrow with the girlfriend so she can check it out too

Everyone, the last Yoga for the Masses for the season will be this Friday, October 1 at 6pm on the NW quadrant of Public Square.  It's free, and is happening from 6 until 7pm regardless of the weather.  And it's open to people of all skill levels.  Bring a blanket if you don't have a mat, or just do yoga on the grass.

If you've wanted to try yoga, this is a great opportunity to try your hand at it!  Plus it's always a great thing to support people who want to create community and have a positive presence in Downtown Cleveland.

EDIT: Time changed to 6pm!

This is my example of why we are in a new era of Cleveland history.

Bravo

yeah i'll say -- thats a fun idea!

it would make for a great photo too.

^ MH, here you are!

Interesting comment from Cleveland.com pasted below.  I have always wondered what we should do with that space....Of course the stations at either end remind of the hotel where the vampires live that fell into ravine in "Lost Boys"

That long, narrow space under the bridge full of people strolling, stopping at interesting places, watching performances and having fun, reminded me of two other urban spaces that I have been to - the Navy Pier in Chicago and the South Bank of the Thames in London. Could we use this space year-round? Could it be converted into an indoor street lined with small shops and restaurants (all locally owned - no chains), performance spaces, spaces for people selling arts and crafts, space for temporary exhibits, perhaps even studio apartments? We desperately need something liker this in downtown Cleveland and it's too cold and windy for this to occur outside year round here. It could be great. Why use it only once a year?

^^ it would be a safety and security nightmare without a proper investment to convert.

perhaps the transportation stimulus could assist?  **jokes**

^Why a security nightmare.  There are literally only 3 ways to get in/out of the streetcar level of the bridge.  With proper lighting installed I see no reason why there would be any security concerns beyond what a normal market or retail area deals with.

I think it has found it use as an events space.  We have plenty of areas in town that are hurting for retail, lets not throw more space into the mix.

Now lets think of other events that can be held there.

^I was just going to say the same thing. I think that there can be infrastructure tweaks to improve it for things such as ingenuity fest that won"t break the bank, but a full conversion would be too much...

"Bridgefest" obviously...

Edit:

I think there are major drainage issues at either end caused by the way they filled it in that would need to be addressed as a major safety issue.

But I think it could be a spot fo any Joe Bagadonuts retailer to hawk their stuff. There's plenty of places like this around bus and train stations in Eastern Europe where any shmuck who pays $50 for a booth for a week or so can sell anything they want, including some of the cheapest/best knock-off crafts, glassware, clothing, watches, purses, shoes and whatever else they want to sell and whatever people are willing to buy! But it's a great space for retailing entrepenuers to get their start. The one I saw outside a bus/train station on the east side of Warsaw last January was huge! There were hundreds of retailers and thousands of people braving 0-degree wind childs. It gives a chance for anyone to start a business or make some money off their craftmanship.

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

Kind of like South Street under the Brooklyn Bridge?

Anyone planning to come tonight?  The weather should be nice...sunny and 64.

The newest development is that some people from the City of Cleveland love the Yoga for the Masses concept, and are working to secure an indoor space downtown for monthly free yoga through the winter season.

C'mon guys, support a grassroots effort to build community and make Cleveland a better place!  It's free, is a great workout, and you do not have to have had any yoga experience at Yoga for the Masses (I certainly did not).

Next one should be Friday, November 5 at 6pm.  Location TBA.

^Maybe public hall, unless Nesht studios is using it for their next blockbuster.

Yeah, I have not attended any of these as I really don't want to do yoga a) outside on the cement or b) in front of passing-by strangers who are gawking and not participating.  If there were an indoor location, I'd be more likely to go.
