Big win that was even more lopsided than the score indicated.  When CWRU scored at the start of the 4th quarter to make it 35-7, the total yards were something like 480-150 before they brought in the second string quarterback and played a soft defense.

The only real challenge remaining on the schedule is CMU, but after watching them struggle against Waynesburg Saturday night, I'm not sure how good they really are.  They always play CWRU tough, though.

Cool to see some Case and Cleveland history get a shout out in this recent Forbes article:

The 1918 season was also noteworthy for the head coaching debut of Knute Rockne. The 30-year-old’s first game in charge of the Notre Dame sideline, following four years as an assistant in South Bend, was a late-September victory over Case Tech (known today as Case Western Reserve) in Cleveland.

Case Tech actually played Notre Dame, Michigan, and Ohio State that season.  The Notre Dame game was home in Cleveland.

Spartans Upset #3 WashU 75-70; Take Sole Possession of Second in UAA

In arguably the biggest win in the history of the men's basketball program at Case Western Reserve University, graduate student guard Mitch Prendergast knocked down a pair of three pointers in the final 90 seconds to help the Spartans secure a 75-70 win over third-ranked Washington University (Mo.) on Sunday afternoon and give the team sole possession of second place in the University Athletic Association.

With the win, the Spartans now stand at 15-2 overall on the season, including a 5-1 mark in UAA games. CWRU sits just half a game back of first-place Emory at the halfway point of the conference schedule. Washington dropped to 14-3 overall and to 4-2 in the UAA.

On to Oshkosh! Record-setting Case Western Reserve team still has tests to pass – Terry Pluto

Updated: Mar. 03, 2022, 8:47 p.m. | Published: Mar. 03, 2022, 5:46 a.m.

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The best mens basketball team in the history of Case Western Reserve University is making the 518-mile bus trip to Oshkosh, Wisconsin, in its own way.

The reason CWRU is in the road to Oshkosh is the Spartans made the Division III NCAA tournament for the first time in school history. The 18 victories also are a school record. In their final practice at CWRU before getting on the bus, Cole Frilling was 45 minutes late. Not his fault. The 17-point scorer (7.0 rebounds) had a lab for his aerospace major.

“That happens a lot,” said McGuinness. “Guys have labs, or a course that they can only take at a certain time. You make allowances. I tell people that if that bothers you as a coach, then you shouldn’t coach at Case.”

The 6-foot-6 Frilling drilled five shots from 3-point range and scored 23 points to help the Spartans to a 92-83 victory over Carnegie-Mellon in the final game of the season – setting up their at-large berth to the NCAA tournament.

Case Western makes SportsCenter Top 10 on way to ITA Indoors title

Arthur Kapetanakis | March 02, 2022

The Case Western University men's tennis team won the 2022 ITA Division III National Team Indoor Championships in style on Sunday.

Not only did the top-seeded Spartans defeat the University of Chicago, 5-1, to earn their first ITA Indoors title, they also made SportsCenter's Top 10 plays thanks to a sensational volley winner from freshman standout James Hopper. (Watch the stunning shot below.)

The Cleveland-based host school got off to a strong start in the final with a 3-0 lead after doubles play, before closing the match out on the singles courts. It was at the No. 1 doubles spot where Hopper's spinning volley lit up the Mayfield Village Racquet Club.

The shot earned the No. 2 spot on Sunday's SportsCenter Top 10, and helped Popper and teammate Jonathan Powell earn an 8-7 victory at the top spot.

Is this CWRU athletics first team national championship? I’m having trouble finding confirmation, but articles about last years outdoor tennis national championship match indicated that it would have been CWRU’s first team championship (and they didn’t win). Or does indoor tennis not get the same recognition?

Same question.

The indoor national title doesn’t seem to carry the “NCAA” label.  Maybe the indoor was some sort of invite only of the top teams nationwide and CWRU happened to win it?

Congrats to the basketball team winning it’s first ever DIII NCAA tournament game!

In case you’re like me and don’t usually watch the videos, that one features 3 blocks on one extremely important defensive possession (down 2 with less than 60 seconds to play). And the highlight in the reply post features a monster offensive rebound on the go-ahead possession in overtime.
