November 16, 200816 yr The playoffs were announced - home game next week against Wabash at Case Field! On a side note, for all the alums out there, I had the strangest experience this week as a prospective student told me that the main reason he's looking at attending is because of the reputation as one of the best D3 football programs with good academics too... Weird. That deserves a . We're actually getting a football reputation at this school. Imagine that.

November 25, 200816 yr Heartbreaking loss - great crowd, great support, exciting game. Painful last minute. NO. 8/11 FOOTBALL LOSES HEARTBREAKER TO WABASH 20-17 IN THE NCAA PLAYOFFS... CLEVELAND, OH - A fourth-and-long conversion and 52-yard touchdown on back-to-back plays in the final minute stunned the Case Western Reserve University football team and ended the 8th-ranked Spartans’ season with a 20-17 loss to 12th-ranked Wabash College in the first round of the NCAA Division III playoffs Saturday at Case Field. "It sure was a big swing," said Head Coach Greg Debeljak. "I have never really been in a game like it... where the tide seemed to turn back and forth like that in such a short time. I was at a loss for words when I was talking to my kids [after the game]. I didn't assume we had the game wrapped up, Wabash is a great team and that's what great teams do, but I don't think this has ever happened to us before. It's hard to take." niceJunior quarterback Dan Whalen (Willoughby, OH-pictured on page one), who rushed for two touchdowns in the final six minutes, scored from a yard out to put the Spartans (10-1) up 17-13 with 1:52 to go. But Matt Hudson hit Wes Chamblee for 21 yards on 4th-and-15 and connected with Chamblee again on the next play for the game-winner with 48 seconds left. Chamblee pulled the ball in around the Case Western Reserve 30, made several moves through the defense and raced to the front corner of the end zone, helping the Little Giants (10-1) eliminate the Spartans from the playoffs for the second consecutive year. The first half was a defensive struggle, played in blustery conditions with freezing temperatures and blowing snow. The only points of the first 30 minutes were scored on a field goal by sophomore Sam Coffey (Middletown, OH) with 10:35 remaining in the first quarter. The Spartans’ defense twice turned away Wabash in the red zone, first on a blocked field goal by Zach Homyk (Chicago, IL) and the second on a goal-line stand in which Case Western Reserve held on four straight plays inside the five yard line. Wabash gained 156 total yards in the half to the Spartans’ 132. Wabash started the second-half scoring with a touchdown just 2:38 into the period, as Hudson hit Scott Liska for an 18-yard score. The extra point was blocked, giving the Little Giants a 6-3 lead. The remainder of the game’s scoring occurred in the fourth quarter. Following a Whalen interception, Evan Sobecki’s two-yard run extended the Wabash lead to 13-3 with 8:58 remaining. But Whalen led the Spartans right back, capping a 9-play, 64-yard drive in just 2:39 with an eight-yard run with just over six minutes to go. The Case Western Reserve defense, behind senior defensive end Brian Calderone (Broadview Heights, OH), forced a three-and-out on Wabash’s next possession. Calderone stuffed Sobecki twice in a row and then forced Hudson to rush an errant throw and give the Spartans the ball back with 4:21 left. A 55-yard strike from Whalen to Homyk set up a first-and-goal inside the five, but the Spartans were stuffed on three straight runs. After lining up for a field goal attempt to tie on fourth down, Head Coach Greg Debeljak decided to go for the lead after a time out and sent the offense back out onto the field. Whalen took the snap and leapt over the center of the line for the score. Following the big plays by Hudson and Chamblee, the Spartans got the ball back with 43 seconds left, but a 24-yard loss on a sack by Jared Lange put Case Western Reserve in a deep hole. The Spartans could not convert on a 4th-and-20, ending their second straight playoff appearance on a disappointing note.nice Wabash defeated Case Western Reserve 38-23 in the second round last year. Whalen completed 21-of-36 passes for 219 yards with an interception along with his two touchdown runs. In the process, he set a school record for career completions, moving passed Eli Grant with 495 completions heading into his senior season next year. Tim Cowdrick (Mentor, OH) was his main target on the afternoon, catching seven passes for 51 yards. Homyk hauled in five for 80 yards and Shaun Nicely (Willoughby, OH) added three for 50. Corey Checkan (Georgetown, PA) led the Case Western Reserve ground game with 41 yards on 11 carries. The Spartans were held to a season-low 64 yards rushing. The 17 points were also the fewest scored by Case Western Reserve this year. Senior linebacker Ben Chlebina (Uniontown, OH-pictured above) had a team-high nine tackles and also picked off a pass to lead the Case Western Reserve defense. Calderone had three sacks among his eight stops and junior linebacker Jeff Brown (North Olmsted, OH) also had eight total tackles while breaking up two passes. The Spartans held Wabash well below its season average in scoring, rushing total yards. Hudson completed 19-of-31 throws for 267 yards and a pair of TDs and an interception. Chamblee had eight catches for 171 yards. Sobecki picked up 85 yards on 18 rushes. Rich Lehman led all players with 11 tackles and had two of the Little Giants’ five sacks. The Little Giants held a 354-283 edge in total yards and 33:34-26:26 advantage in time of possession. Wabash will face Wheaton College next week in the second round. Great season Spartans!
June 24, 200915 yr I'm pretty sure this is new this year...and I like it A LOT. The football season opener this year at Case Field, Sept 5th, will be Heritage Day: (Pic too big to post) http://www.case.edu/athletics/varsity/sports_men/football/stats/2009/HeritageDayLogo_WEB%20(2).JPG
July 13, 200915 yr Like I stated above, I think this is a great idea with helping the university with alumni relations, school spirit, sense of idenity, and the promotiion of the newly-found CWRU Fall sports success on the National level. Hideous uniforms...but I do like the Euclid Tavern after party. http://www.case.edu/athletics/varsity/news/2008-09/heritageday.html HERITAGE DAY MODERN DAY SPARTANS TO REMEMBER THEIR HERITAGE... This September 5 the modern day Case Western Reserve University football team will pay tribute to the University’s gridiron history, which began in 1890, by wearing retro jerseys as part of a first ever Heritage Day. Pictured below are senior receiver Ryan Kolesar (right) and senior linebacker Jeff Brown (left). The Spartans will face Kenyon College at 12:00 p.m., but instead of wearing their usual blue and white uniforms with the Spartan logo on their helmets, Case Western Reserve will wear a red and brown jersey with white pants. Brown and white were the school colors for Case Institute of Technology (Case, Rough Riders) and red and white were the colors of Western Reserve University (Reserve, Red Cats). The Spartans will also wear Rough Rider and Red Cats logos on their helmets in place of the Spartan. Across the front of the retro jerseys is “CWRU”, paying tribute to all football players who competed when the school's second reference was CWRU. After the decision to federate in 1967, Case Western Reserve saw the continuation of the Case-Reserve series for three more seasons. In the fall of 1970, Case Western Reserve University was represented by a single team in intercollegiate football. The proposal to merge the Case and Reserve football teams was made by the Case Athletic Director Phillip K. (Nip) Heim after discussions with the players of the two football squads and the Reserve and Case athletic directors. Flory Mauriocourt, head football coach at Reserve, was named head coach of the merged University team. Ernie Green, assistant vice provost for student affairs and former Cleveland Brown, announced the appointment in February of 1970 and said that it was strongly supported by Reserve Athletic Director Ed Lewis, Heim, and Case Football Coach Doug Mooney. The new team, the Spartans, continued to play in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference. The Case-Reserve rivalry started 78 years prior to the union. At the time, it was the oldest rivalry in the Midwest and third oldest in the country. Reserve won 49 games, Case won 18 and six ended in ties. In the early 1900’s both Case and Reserve played Big Ten teams on an even basis and both schools had winning records against Ohio State. For many years the Case-Reserve game was played at League Park on Thanksgiving Day. In 1941, a record crowd of 38,000 saw the contest in which Reserve defeated Case 26-6 and went on to beat Arizona State in the Sun Bowl. Reserve had undefeated seasons in 1894, 1935, 1936 and 1938. Case won four Ohio championships prior to 1933. From 1934 to 1942 Reserve won 65 games and lost only eight. The Case Rough Riders received their nickname during the 1930-1947 coaching regime of Ray Ride. Two of their greatest players were Bill Lund, one of the original Cleveland Browns, and Ray Mack who declined a professional football career to star with Lou Bourdeau as half of the Cleveland Indians’ second base-shortstop combination. Reserve teams were dubbed the Red Cats in the early 1930’s. Eddie Finnigan was the outstanding figure in Reserve football history. He was an all-American player in 1932. In 1951, he returned to Reserve as coach and Athletic Director. His teams won PAC championships in 1955 and 1960. The outstanding player of this era was the late Warren Lehr, who later starred as a defensive back with the Cleveland Browns. MORE FUN FACTS … The last Thanksgiving Day game played between Case and Reserve was November 26, 1953 at Clarke Field, the home field for Case at the time. Besides League Park, where they played over 10 times, the holiday game was also played several times at old Cleveland Municipal Stadium. The last Case-Reserve football game was played November 15, 1969 at Finnigan Field. The Red cats defeated the Rough Riders 28-14. **The above information was obtained from a "Rough Cats or Red Riders?" article printed in a Reserve alumni publication [The Men of Adelbert]. July 27, 200915 yr Man, when was the last time Case Football and Ohio State Football were on a cover together. Maybe 1918?? (See Attached). http://www.case.edu/athletics/varsity/news.htm#s1_page2 WHALEN IN GOOD COMPANY ON OCF'S LIST... CLEVELAND, OH - Case Western Reserve University senior quarterback Dan Whalen (Willoughby, OH) has been named to the OhioCollegeFootball.Com (OCF) “Great Eight” team which highlights Ohio’s top eight players [All Divisions]. The Great Eight will be featured in the upcoming OCF Preseason Magazine (see cover below) which will be available on Monday, July 27. Whalen, a 2008 Galiardi Trophy [Division III Player of the Year] finalist, is in good company. Appearing with him on the list are Terrelle Pryor (QB, Ohio State, Div. I), Barry Church (DB, Toledo, Div. I), Eugene Jarvis (RB, Kent State, Div. I), Billy Cundiff (QB, Ashland, Div. II), Sean Heenan (DL, Dayton, Div. IAA), James Herbert (DL, Mount Union, Div. III) and Cecil Shots (WR, Mount Union, Div. III). “It’s neat - my mom sent it to me because she’s subscribes to that website,” Whalen said. “I’m excited and it’s an exciting time right now for all of us. My teammates are calling asking me if I am ready for camp. We are all itching to get going and for me, my last time around, it’s going to be something special hopefully.” Under Whalen’s guidance, the Spartans football team completed its second consecutive undefeated regular season (10-0, 3-0 UAA, 0-1 NCAA) in 2008 and currently has a 21-game regular season winning streak dating back to November of 2006. Case Western Reserve also repeated as UAA champions, their third overall, and made its second straight NCAA Division III playoff appearance. Whalen guided the team to a conference-leading 37.8 points a game (18th in the country) a year ago. The two-time first team All-UAA honoree and Offensive Player of the Year accumulated 2,192 yards through the air on 163-of-265 passing (61.5-percent), throwing 17 touchdowns and only five interceptions. He also scrambled for 271 yards on the ground and was second on the team with six rushing touchdowns. His 148.4 efficiency rating was the highest for a starting quarterback in the UAA. “Dan has proven he is one of the best quarterbacks in the country,” Head Coach Greg Debeljak said. “He is a great leader and very versatile. There are so many things we do because of his strengths and he makes people around him better. I have coached three other players at his position that have gotten professional football looks – he is every bit of football player that they are.” The Spartans finished 2008 ranked 18th in the country and were recently ranked 20th in The Sporting News newly released 2009 College Football publication. They open the season September 5 at home against Kenyon College at 12:00 p.m. This game will be part of “Heritage Day” where the modern day team will honor the University’s great gridiron history by wearing retro uniforms - click here http://www.case.edu/athletics/varsity/news/2008-09/heritageday.html
July 27, 200915 yr HA! Check it out, Western Reserve and Case really did have a great history, and I'm glad they're starting to speak of it more lately. Even though this was "back in the day." Check out Ohio State's win-loss record vs these opponents: OSU vs Case: 11-10-2 OSU vs Western Reserve: 5-6-1 http://www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com/fls/17300//pdf/fb/m-footbl-opponents.pdf?DB_OEM_ID=17300 But I say let's wait another 90 more years before we play them again...
August 12, 200915 yr http://www.case.edu/athletics/varsity/news.htm#s1_page2 August 4, 2009 FOOTBALL TEAM RECEIVES ANOTHER TOP 20 RANKING... CLEVELAND, OH - The Case Western Reserve University football team has been ranked No. 16 in the country in the D3Football.com Preseason Top 25 National Poll. The announcement was made on the popular NCAA Division III website today. Case Western Reserve had previously been ranked No. 20 in the Sporting News’ 2009 College Football publication. “We have a lot of experienced kids coming back and I understand that expectations are high,” Head Coach Greg Debeljak explained. “Polls really don’t mean much until week 10, so we will take it with a grain of salt, but we are also appreciative of the respect people are giving us.” The Spartans enter the 2009 season having won 21 consecutive regular season games dating back to November 11, 2006 which includes back-to-back undefeated [10-0] seasons in 2007 and 2008. They have also claimed two straight [three overall, 1996] University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships and received an NCAA postseason bid in each of the last two seasons. Last year, the Spartans finished 18th in the country (NCAA Division III) in scoring offense, averaging 37.8 points per game, and finished 10th nationally in scoring defense, allowing just 13.9 points per game. That defense allowed only 17 first half points and shut their opponents out 8 times in the first 30 minutes during the regular season. “It [being ranked] puts a target on your back,” Debeljak explained. “Teams get a little more fired up playing a ranked team than an unranked team. I think our kids enjoy that though and like to defend what they feel they worked hard for and that’s respect.” Case Western Reserve lost a 20-17 heartbreaker last year in round one of the NCAA playoffs at home to Wabash College, a team that defeated them, 38-23, in round two of the NCAA postseason in 2007. They kick-off the 2009 regular season at home with a Heritage Day game against Kenyon College at 12:00 p.m. The Spartans ranked 18th in turnover margin a year ago, only giving the ball up 1.2 times per game. Another thing they will not want to give up this year is the UAA title.

September 4, 200915 yr Stating a Case for football excellence is pretty easy with these Spartans: Terry Pluto by Terry Pluto/Plain Dealer Columnist Thursday September 03, 2009, 7:14 PM John Kuntz/The Plain Dealer The Case Western Reserve Spartans have become another small-college football juggernaut on the Northeast Ohio scene -- even if not many local football fans are aware of it. CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Before every game, star quarterback Dan Whalen doubles as the team barber. April 12, 201015 yr Good Luck to Dan Whalen on his NFL tryout! Cleveland Browns get firsthand look at CWRU QB Dan Whalen The Case Western Reserve University quarterback was pleased with his workout for the Browns on Sunday, saying, "I think it went great. Honestly, probably my best one so far. I threw 75 passes on my count and missed on only three or four balls. Hopefully, I raised some eyebrows." It probably was Whalen's last formal workout before the April 22-24 NFL draft. He's hoping to gain at least an invitation to an NFL rookie minicamp workout if he isn't drafted. If not, Whalen probably will proceed with his career in the Canadian Football League. Calgary owns his rights. September 2, 201014 yr Fast-rising Case Western Reserve can't wait for its hometown showdown with John Carroll Published: Wednesday, September 01, 2010, 8:16 PM Terry Pluto, The Plain Dealer CWRU will host John Carroll at 7 p.m. Saturday, putting their 31-game regular-season winning streak on the line. Their only three losses in the last three seasons have been in the playoffs. "For the last four years, the kids have been after me to upgrade the schedule," said Debeljak. "I have talked to OAC schools, they have room for only one independent game, so scheduling was a problem. That's why I'm happy this worked out." Whalen has graduated, with his name next to nearly every significant school passing record. Walsh Jesuit product Joey Baum takes over, having waited three years for this chance. Along with Mentor running back Billy Deitmen, Baum is a team captain. Holy Name product Dale English is the team's sack leader. Nearly every CWRU player has heard they'd be lucky to play .500 in the OAC. They heard that their University Athletic Association isn't much of a football league because only four schools play -- Carnegie Mellon, Washington (of St. Louis), the University of Chicago and CWRU. The conference does not have an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs, so CWRU has been an at-large selection "Obviously, we are in a stronger league, but Greg has done a fantastic, unbelievable job at Case," said JCU coach Regis Scafe. http://www.cleveland.com/pluto/blog/index.ssf/2010/09/fast-rising_case_western_reser.html

October 21, 201014 yr I'll be both at the game and the Alumni Tailgate. Unfortunately I'm not sure if the Alumni Tailgate will have unlimited Great Lakes Beer included this game, though, since it was called a "Family Friendly Alumni Tailgate" this time. :drunk:
October 24, 201014 yr Sorry for the late response.... I've been moving back to cleveland this past week and haven't had a chance to check back! Another great win for CWRU with a 28-14 victory over Wooster yesterday. Unfortunitely I was having too good of a time in Ohio City to be ae to make it back to University Circle. Let's hope next home game we can meet up... Or playoffs :)
January 21, 201114 yr Both Case's Men and Women basketball teams are 3-0 in the UAA. I think it was awesome for the Shaw High School band to play and perform at the last Case game: Men rebound from poor start to take top spot in UAA Kate Clancy Issue date: 1/21/11 Section: Sports On the first weekend back from winter break, the Spartan men's basketball team opened their UAA season at home with major victories over two Top 25 ranked teams. On Friday night, the Spartans battled No. 25 New York University until the final seconds and pulled off the win 80-76. With one short day's rest, the Spartans turned around and took down No. 13 Brandeis University in the final minutes 66-63. These two wins put the Spartans at 7-7 overall and help them keep their top spot in the UAA at 3-0. The Spartans travel this weekend to play Emory University and Rochester University on Friday and Sunday, respectively. The game started out with high intensity, and not only on the court. The gym was packed with cheering fans, and the Shaw High School band made an appearance, sophomore Austin Fowler explained. "The Shaw band is something special; hearing them in warm-ups gets you fired up and ready to play." www.cwruobserver.com/media/storage/paper1370/news/2011/01/21/Sports/Men-Rebound.From.Poor.Start.To.Take.Top.Spot.In.Uaa-3969823.shtml]http://media.www.cwruobserver.com/media/storage/paper1370/news/2011/01/21/Sports/Men-Rebound.From.Poor.Start.To.Take.Top.Spot.In.Uaa-3969823.shtml
May 19, 201114 yr Case Western just won their first ever NCAA playoff appearance in style -- a grand slam home run. Check it out: http://www.case.edu/athletics/varsity/sports_men/baseball/stats/2011/recap_adrian.html
July 24, 201113 yr It's that time again...Case Western Reserve football! 8-) 2011 Spartan Football Season Preview CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The 2011 edition of the Case Western Reserve University football team will feature one of the top defensive units in program history and plenty of fresh faces on offense as the Spartans look to capture a fourth University Athletic Association title in five seasons. The Spartans, 8-2 overall and 1-2 in UAA action last season, have won three of the last four conference championships with three straight trips to the NCAA Playoffs from 2007-09. CWRU's run includes a 38-game regular season winning streak that began at the end of the 2006 campaign and stretched all the way to the latter portion of the 2010 schedule. Of the 31 lettermen back from last year's group, Case returns a total of 13 starters – eight on defense, four on offense and one on special teams. With most of his team's experience on the defensive side of the ball, eighth-year head coach Greg Debeljak knows his team may have to rely more heavily on defense than it has during the program's dominant run of the past four seasons. But, Debeljak also knows that a different identity will not change his team's goals heading into the fall of 2011. "We have two consistent goals that we try to obtain each and every year," said Debeljak, who is 55-22 in seven seasons as head coach. "Our number one goal is to win the UAA – that is the priority. Our second goal is team unity and creating a family atmosphere within our program. This year, the third goal is to improve week-by-week. We will have some question marks going in, especially on offense, so we're going to have to consistently improve to reach our goal of winning the UAA. http://athletics.case.edu/sports/fball/2011-12/releases/20110714nvoonq BTW...check this new Case Western sports website...looks like they're partnered with a company known as PrestoSports.
July 24, 201113 yr Looks like CWRU also has a surprise transfer: QB Erik Olson http://athletics.case.edu/sports/fball/2011-12/bios/olson%20erik%20n53b Transferring in from Division II California University of Pennsylvania, and also posted a perfect 15-0 record in high school and a PA state runner-up. They've lost two extremely talented QB's...so will see if this guy can fit into the pass happy offense.
September 7, 201113 yr Case beat cross town rival John Carroll to start the season. This Saturday at 7 PM is the Home Opener vs Rochester, NY. I encourage everyone to come see and support another solid winning team in the Cleveland city limits! And Fireworks after the game. http://athletics.case.edu/sports/fball/2011-12/releases/201109061dm4rd TEAM UPDATE: Case has a D-II transfer QB, a stud Freshman running back from Miami, FL (averaged 10 yards a carry last week), and a returning veteran defense who scored 2 TD's on John Carroll.

October 7, 201113 yr Getting some love from Terry Pluto. Reminder, next home game is tomorrow at 6 PM. Finding true student-athletes at Case Western Reserve is easy ... unlike their classes Published: Friday, October 07, 2011, 4:25 AM Updated: Friday, October 07, 2011, 4:39 AM Terry Pluto, The Plain Dealer By Terry Pluto, The Plain Dealer I needed a break from the NCAA football scandal of the week, from all the talk of probations, suspensions and teams switching conferences. So I stopped by Case Western Reserve in Cleveland, where the team's top defensive player is studying to be a nurse and works in the summer restoring cars and motorcycles. And where the starting tight end has spent two summers working in the freezers at Heinen's warehouse and pursues a master's in business. The team's leading receiver is a chemical engineering major who interned for two years at NASA. http://www.cleveland.com/pluto/blog/index.ssf/2011/10/finding_true_student-athletes.html
