Case Football started its 2012 season with a W.  And again, no PD coverage for this team in the city limits of Cleveland .  Nice article from the Marietta Times though:

College football: Pioneers come up short in opener

September 3, 2012

By Mike Morrison - Sports Writer , The Marietta Times

The Marietta College Pioneers bid for a season opening, come-from-behind, final quarter victory came up just short as the Case Western Reserve Spartans clipped the Pios 26-23 at Don Drumm Stadium Saturday night.

The Pioneers jumped out to a quick 10-0 first-quarter lead, only to surrender 26 unanswered Spartan points before staging their fourth-quarter rally.

With under two minutes to play and Case Western facing a third-and-12 at the Pioneer 49-yard line, running back Manny Sicre ripped off a 15-yard run that proved to be the deciding play on a night where there were no shortages of big plays.

A short 24-yard field goal attempt by freshman kicker Conor Durina was wide left and the Pioneers had missed a golden opportunity to take control of the game against the heavily favored Spartans.

"Any time you play a quality opponent you've got to take advantage of those kind of situations," said Pioneer head coach Jeff Filkovski. "We easily could have gone up a couple of touchdowns but we just made too many mistakes."

Solid start for Case Western football to open the season.  They face 2 nationally ranked teams this year in Linfield (Oregon) and Trinity (Texas), so a fast start is highly needed.  A winning football team is a fun thing to follow in Cleveland :D ...plus another recommended University Circle event.

Balanced Offense, Dominant Defense Leads Spartans in 37-16 Rout of Marietta in 2013 Season Opener

CLEVELAND – A balanced offense that saw four different players score touchdowns and a dominant defensive effort led the way as the Case Western Reserve University football team opened the 2013 season with a 37-16 rout of visiting Marietta College on Saturday night at Case Field.

If you're looking for nice noon-time Saturday entertainment in University Circle, Case Western Reserve Spartans play the No. 2 Team in the country, Linfield (McMinnville, OR)...a little nervous about this one...this is essentially playing a Mount Union-strong team.

Yeah..... unfortunately the disparity in DIII teams can be just as great or greater than among the 100+ DI teams.  I wouldn't expect this to be much of a competitive game, and probably would not have been so even in the Wetzel glory days from a few years back.

You're definitely correct, but do you mean Whalen?

D'oh!  Yes.  Dan Whalen, the former do-it-all QB.... no the sports columnist Dan Wetzel

There has been talk in recent years of splitting D-III because the division is gigantic and a chunk of the schools (the UWs, for instance, I believe) stress athletic success more than others.  The other problem that exists, as I've heard it from those affiliated with D-III schools, is that certain schools lower their entrance standards for football players and are very creative in how they dole out financial aid.  I won't mention any names, but one of the schools I've been told about that does this is located in Ohio. ;)  But when this is happening, it destroys parity even further, particularly when most D-III schools legitimately are in the division because they have de-emphasized athletics.

Case Western baseball getting nationally stronger:

Spartans bring UAA Championship back home

JP O'Hagan, Sports Editor

March 22, 2014

Filed under Baseball, Sports, Top Stories

The Spartan baseball team is on a mission, and by every indication they are prepared to achieve their ultimate goal: compete for the national championship.

The Spartans took the first big step toward that goal over the past two weeks, bringing home their second University Athletics Association Championship in two years. In addition to celebrating their championship, the Spartans stand at 11-3, are ranked 23rd in the nation and have had their third player named to the Division III National Team of the Week.

“Our guys work incredibly hard,” said head coach Matt Englander. “It was great to win the UAA, we were able to sweep our rival, Emory, and we are happy about that.”

Case Western football has a ton of returning talent, two night games, and a hyped-up freshman class.  Worth checking out this year:

2014 Spartan Football Preview

July 28, 2014

CLEVELAND – The 2014 Case Western Reserve University football season will feature a program-first opportunity as the Spartans will compete for an automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Playoffs.

Now an affiliate member of the Presidents' Athletic Conference, CWRU will play an eight-game PAC schedule while maintaining its traditional slate of University Athletic Association opponents.

"Our goal now is to win two conference championships," said Head Coach Greg Debeljak. "There won't be a major change in philosophy. We have the same core beliefs as a program, but now we have new opportunities to compete on a national level. This is something our program has looked forward to for quite some time, and we are glad that it is finally here."

Debeljak's team will feature 30 letterwinners and 12 returning starters with eight on defense (all juniors) and four on offense.

Case Western Reserve (5-4 in 2013) has seven consecutive winning seasons with a 59-14 overall record since the beginning of the 2007 campaign. During that span, the Spartans have won four UAA Championships with three straight undefeated regular seasons and NCAA Playoff berths from 2007-09.

Debeljak Announces Spartan Football Recruiting Class of 2014

May 5, 2014

CLEVELAND – Case Western Reserve University Head Coach Greg Debeljak has announced the Spartan football recruiting class of 2014. The 39 incoming players represent 14 different states from around the nation.

"We are very excited to welcome the class of 2018 to our program," said Debeljak. "This is one of our largest and most diverse groups as our staff did a great job of bringing in young men from many different regions throughout the country. The 14 states represented are probably our largest number, and our group from within Ohio is very solid. Talent-wise, only our recruiting class in 2006 compares to this one."

State Breakdown:

Ohio - 13

Pennsylvania - 4

California - 4

Illinois - 3

North Carolina - 2

Virginia - 2

New York - 2

Massachusetts - 2

Florida - 1

New Hampshire - 1

Georgia - 1

Colorado - 1

Maryland - 1

New Jersey - 1

Interesting that CWRU and C-M are (re-)joining the PAC, at least football. If I understand the schedule, this means that neither team will have any open dates, which is definitely a good thing if you're an AD who has to fill slots, but as a fan I really wish CWRU and JCU could find a way to play each other more often. I definitely think that it could be a great rivalry if given a chance to bloom. In fact, taking it a step further, I'd like to see JCU, CWRU, B-W, C-M, and maybe the Columbus OAC schools form the core of a new conference formed around larger city-based schools in the Great Lakes region. As a semi-JCU fan, I don't think the OAC is as good of a fit for the school as it once may have been.

Beecher’s Career Night, Dominant Defense Propel Spartans to 30-0 Victory versus Carnegie Mellon in 29th Annual Academic Bowl

CLEVELAND – Senior quarterback Billy Beecher (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra Area) passed for a career-high 301 yards and accounted for three touchdowns as the Case Western Reserve University football team claimed the 29th Annual Academic Bowl by a score of 30-0 versus Carnegie Mellon University (Pa.) in the 2014 season opener at DiSanto Field.

The game, the first for each school as affiliate members of the Presidents' Athletic Conference, counts toward both the PAC and University Athletic Association standings. The event was also tabbed as the 2014 PAC Kickoff Classic, and the Spartans donned their new Nike uniforms for the first time.

That class from 2014 I posted last year is seriously carrying the team.  Their sophomore QB and RB and putting up some points this year after a disastrous past season.

If you're tired of watching losing Browns, come check out a city of Cleveland-based high powered offense.  Four more home games left, including this weekend:

I highly suggest supporting our local Case Western Reserve Spartans football team this Saturday at 6 PM at Disanto Field in beautiful University Circle.

NEO currently has 2-top 25 teams ranked (#1-ranked Mount Union and #18-ranked John Carroll).  If Case Western Reserve wins this week, I suspect they'll be the third to break into the top 25 as well.  http://www.d3football.com/top25/2015/week7

This game vs #15-ranked Washington and Jefferson (who hail from dreaded Pittsburgh Steelers fanbase geography) comes as arguably the most important game since the Dan Whalen era.  This game has league title and playoff implications on the line...not to mention puts CWRU back on the map for NCAA DIII football.

This team is fun to watch and has a high powered offense.

And there's plenty of time to walk over to the Euclid Tavern Happy Dog to catch the rest of the Ohio State-Rutgers game starting at 8 PM :)

Finally, some great coverage from the Plain Dealer: http://www.cleveland.com/sports/college/index.ssf/2015/11/case_western_reserve_qb_rob_cu.html

And some surprising coverage from the Chicago Tribune: http://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/elgin-courier-news/sports/ct-ecn-college-notes-rob-cuda-st-1105-20151104-story.html

This game this Saturday is essentially a playoff game (pending the rivalry game vs Carnegie Mellon)...would be a good game to attend.

Go figure, CWRU loses to a team led by an alumnus. Probably ends any chance of a playoff spot for the Spartans.

This was a tough loss to swallow, especially after #12 Thomas More was heavily favored to beat Case by 2-3 scores by most predictions.

Case was leading 26-14 late in the 3rd qtr.

Case had 5 turnovers total (including one in the Red Zone) and 4 FGs in the Red Zone...and still almost won!  Very frustrating as Case could and should have won this game.  Two 4th qtr turnovers sealed the fate for the Spartans.  No arguing against that the team played their hearts out.

Coverage from the PD:  http://www.cleveland.com/sports/college/index.ssf/2015/11/case_western_reserve_falls_to.html

I don't know if there's still any chance of Case being selected for the playoffs, but they should be on the National radar after today's game.  There is still the "Academic Bowl" next week vs Carnegie Mellon who is surprising good this year after smacking down University of Chicago today 52-7.  A win versus our rival could help, but it'll be interesting to see how it plays out with the NCAA selection committee.

Unfinished Business

Football hoping for playoff run following last year’s turnaround

Eddie Kerekes, Sports Editor • September 2, 2016

CWRU was so successful because their offense was one of the best in the country. The unit ranked 29th among all NCAA Division III teams with 38.7 points per game and 32nd with 468.4 yards per contest. It was the Spartans’ highest points per game average since their 2009 playoff run.

The offense will be led by third-year quarterback Rob Cuda. He broke out in 2015, leading the team in both passing (2,631 yards) and rushing (715 yards). Cuda’s dual-threat nature will be tough for other teams to defend against. In addition to scrambling on broken plays, offensive coordinator Dereck Slesh likes to mix in designed runs for the quarterback.

To start the season, CWRU will be hosting the University of Chicago Maroons at DiSanto Field. Last year the Spartans suffered a devastating 31-30 loss in Chicago and will be hoping to avenge the loss at home. All-time CWRU has a 12-14 record against the Maroons. The good news for Spartans fans is their team has won eight of the last 12 meetings between the schools.

The Maroons’ offensive attack will be tough to defend against. Fourth-year quarterback Burke Moser will be returning after a record-setting 2015. He set the Maroons’ completion percentage record and tied the record for most touchdown passes in a season. He also tossed the second-most passing yards in Maroons history.

Yoga at the Steve Belichick Weight Room:

College football: Yoga is in for Case Western Reserve team

By Mark Podolski, The News-Herald

Debeljak came up with the idea for a football players yoga class after reading a story about Seahawks coach Pete Carroll doing the same with his players.

The class has had a positive effect on the Case team, said Debeljak, especially his larger players such as offense and defensive linemen.

“The best lineman we’ve had here are the ones who could bend,” said Debeljak, who was introduced to yoga by his daughter Allison about 10 years ago. “I think (yoga) really helps our lineman with flexibility and getting into position. As for the rest of our guys, this helps with their state of mind and just being able to relax and relieve a little bit of stress.”
