Congrats to Case Western Reserve's football team on a statement win, moving to an undefeated 9-0.  Next stop, Pittsburgh, against their arch nemesis rival Carnegie Mellon, who is 7-2.  Game is known as the Academic Bowlhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academic_Bowl_(college_football)

And congrats to Coach Greg Debeljak on his 100th win of his head coaching career.

BTW...finally, some fantastic media coverage on the only NCAA team in Cleveland city limits:

Case Western Reserve in title chase with 41-10 win over Westminster (photos)

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Case Western Reserve University won, in dominating fashion, the football game it had to win to make its next game crucial.

The Spartans, keyed by Jacob Burke's 160 rushing yards and three touchdowns, routed a strong Westminster team, 41-10, in a Presidents Athletic Conference game at DiSanto Field on Saturday.

Case Western (9-0, 7-0), the nation's 16th-ranked Division III team, closes its regular season with a visit to Carnegie Mellon (7-2, 5-2) next Saturday. A win would likely earn a national playoffs berth for the Spartans, while a loss would probably keep them out of the postseason.

Case Western football team routs Westminster, eyes 10-0 season next week at Carnegie Mellon

It’s taken a while for the Case Western Reserve football team to come full circle, but here it is.

With one game to play this season, the Spartans are on the cusp of a 10-0 regular season, and a likely spot in the NCAA Division III playoffs.

The victory was Debeljak’s 100th of coaching career, and his players delivered the milestone win in impressive fashion. Westminster entered the game 6-2 and this week was regional ranked by NCAA.com.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Here's what it's like to play football at Case Western Reserve University.

It's players pulling all-nighters ... because they have to study for tests.

These guys are after the big time: Admission to medical schools, engineering schools and schools that offer MBA programs.

It's the team facing the biggest game of the season Saturday, but 15 players were excused from Tuesday's practice. They were attending a session called "Special Instruction" to prepare them for exams in Chemistry and Physics.

It's where the guys majoring in corporate and international finance are viewed as taking the "easy courses" by the future engineers and doctors.

CWRU football's spring football game is against the Milano Rhinos in Italy next week, one of the top teams in the Italian Football League (IFL)...not too bad of a spring game.

CWRU SPARTANS TO DEPART FOR NORTHERN ITALY AND SWITZERLAND

The CWRU Spartans, who put together possibly the most successful and certainly one of their best seasons of college football in their university’s history, will be departing on Friday for Europe.  Over a nine-day, eight-night journey they will take in the breath-taking beauty of Lake Como, Italy and equally impressive sites in Switzerland consisting of Lucerne, Interlaken, Bern and Zurich, Switzerland.

Early in their journey the Spartans will play an international friendly contest against the highly successful and proud Milano Rhinos American Football Club.  The Rhinos were champions of the Italian Football League a year ago and finished second last season.

CWRU Softball Captures Notre Dame Regional; Heading to NCAA Super Regional

Posted: May 13, 2018

The Case Western Reserve University softball team will be playing in the Super Regional of the NCAA Championships for the first time in program history after sweeping the Ohio Northern University Polar Bears on Sunday in the Notre Dame Regional. The Spartans started the day by shutting out the Polar Bears 5-0, and then won the second contest by a score of 5-1. CWRU is now 35-9 on the year, while ONU finished out its season at 32-11.

The Spartans will now await the winner of the Hope College vs. Calvin College Regional Championship game that is being held in Holland, Michigan tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. The winner of that regional will play the Spartans in the NCAA Super Regional at a site to be determined from Friday, May 18th through Saturday, May 19th.

2) CWRU baseball sweep the University of Chicago today to end the regular season.

This means, against those fellow nerd research institution, CWRU's series records were:

vs Brandeis 4-0

vs University of Chicago 3-0

vs University of Rochester 1-0

vs Emory 3-1

vs New York University 3-1

vs Washington of St. Louis 2-2

CWRU Baseball Sweeps Chicago to Conclude Regular Season

Posted: May 13, 2018

The Case Western Reserve University baseball team ended its regular season on a high note on Sunday, sweeping a doubleheader against the University of Chicago with a 7-6 walk-off victory in the opening game of the day, and following with an 11-4 win in game two of the doubleheader at Nobby's Ballpark in Cleveland, Ohio.

The wins give the Spartans a sweep of the three-game series against Chicago, as the team ended the year on a four-game winning streak.  Case Western Reserve stands at 29-10 on the season, while Chicago completed its 2018 campaign with a 26-13 record.

3) CWRU football defeated the Milano Rhinos 41-6 in Italy today, before the game was called for a thunderstorm in the second half

CWRU Spartans Efficiently Dominate in Italy

The Case Western Reserve University Spartans started fast and decisively sprinting to a 28-0 first quarter lead versus the Milano Rhinos then cruised to a 41-6 victory in Limbiate, Italy just north of Milan.  The game was shortened as a thunderstorm struck equally decisively early in the 4th quarter with the Spartans threatening to score inside the Rhinos 10-yard line. The international friendly was a rematch of two clubs that met in 2015.

The Rhinos, who had recently won four games in a row to vault into playoff position in the Italian Football League, were not able to handle the precision and speed of the Spartans who scored on every possession in the first half and added a defensive ‘pick-6’ as well.

For members of the softball team, it is the bond that brings them together in pursuit of the ultimate goal: a National Championship.

Case Western Reserve Spartans just lost a great man to cancer -- longest tenured athletics department employee:

Longtime CWRU Equipment Manager Hugh Marshall Passes Away

Posted: Jun 15, 2018

Case Western Reserve University equipment manager Hugh Marshall, who touched the lives of thousands of members of the community during his over-30 years of service to the campus, passed away on the night of Thursday, June 14, 2018 at the age of 65 after a battle with cancer.

This past season, on October 14th, Marshall was on the sidelines for his 300th-consecutive CWRU football game, a 63-28 win at Thiel College in Greenville, Pennsylvania, and went on to participate in 306-straight Spartan football games by the end of the year.

"Hugh may have touched more lives on campus than any other CWRU employee over the past 30 years," said CWRU Head Football Coach Greg Debeljak.  "Every Spartan athlete knew and liked Hugh, and he always had a friendly word for anyone who he came across."

He was recognized for his 30 years of service at the CWRU Department of Student Affairs end of year celebration in May.  Hugh's unwavering support of the athletic program at Case Western Reserve helped immeasurably improve the collegiate experience for countless students over the last three decades.

Hugh is survived by his older brothers Bill and Craig, and his younger brother David.  A memorial service open to the public will be held at Horsburgh Gymnasium in the Veale Center on the campus of Case Western Reserve University on Saturday, June 23rd from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Nike Air Sole inventor's family donates $1.9 million to Case Western Reserve University for sports uniforms

Updated Jul 23, 1:19 PM; Posted Jul 23, 1:17 PM

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The family of the man who invented revolutionary Nike "Air Sole" technology donated $1.9 million dollars for student athlete uniforms at Case Western Reserve University.

The university announced the "The M. Frank Rudy and Margaret Dormiter Rudy Athletic Endowment" on Monday. Rudy, who the CEO of Nike said "holds a singular place in the pantheon of Nike innovation," graduated from CRWU in 1950.

The endowment, created by Rudy's daughter and named after him and his late wife, will pay for Nike uniforms and shoes for about 500 student-athletes in the university's 19 women's and men's varsity sports, according to a university press release.

https://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2018/07/nike_air_sole_inventors_family.html

As someone who actively raised money for my former college football program as recently as last year, $1.9 million for uniforms is BONKERS. We had nice, Nike Combat uniforms with stitched numbering, it totaled only $11,000 for 150 uniforms.

It's an endowment - they aren't spending that money, they are spending the income

It's an endowment - they aren't spending that money, they are spending the income

Understood, and if they make 3% annually they've got $57,000 to spend on uniforms annually, which is nuts

That's what the article indicated. Nonetheless, the best D3 programs, like Mount Union, Wisconsin Whitewater, Linfield, Wheaton, Sewanee, etc. probably recycle uniforms for each sport every 3 years. This endowment will allow Case to accelerate that. Really, only football, basketball, baseball, and softball require uniforms over $30/unit, and only football requires a high volume of them.

Case is in a really good place with this. You wouldn't believe how big uniforms can be in the recruiting process.

I wonder if they can use this for things like basketball shoes.

Case’s alumni donations have been flexing its muscle in recent years.  New locker rooms, Wyant field house, renovations to baseball field, etc... and not endowed uniforms.  Not sure if it’s a coincidence with recruiting, but most sports have been way up in recent years.

Agreed on the uniforms...another feather in the cap across all sports recruiting.

Case football team impresses in scrimmage; John Carroll coach says his team ‘average’

By Mark Podolski, The News-Herald

POSTED: 08/24/18, 8:43 PM EDT | UPDATED: 5 HRS AGO 0

With the regular season fast approaching, Coaches Greg Debeljak and Rick Finotti might be in different mindsets entering 2018.

Debeljak’s Case Western Reserve team lost 25 seniors from the 2017 team that went 11-1 and made it to the second round of the NCAA Division III playoffs. Finotti’s John Carroll Blue Streaks, with 18 starters returning, are looking for more after a 6-4 campaign in the coach’s first year.

On Aug. 24, the teams faced off in a scrimmage, and the young Spartans held their own at Don Shula Stadium. Quarterbacks Drew Saxton, a true freshman who finished his high school career at South Fayette as one of Western Pennsylvania’s all-time leader passers, threw a touchdown pass early on to help Case win, 22-17, in one half that featured the starters.

The Spartans are 50-19 all-time in home games at DiSanto Field, which first opened during the 2005 season.  Included in the overall record is a 20-5 mark at home since the start of the 2013 season, good for a .800 winning percentage.  Case Western Reserve is 10-1 at home over the last three years and has won six-straight home contests, while outscoring its last eight opponents at DiSanto Field 436-188.

Case Western Reserve is 29-3 in its last 32 night games dating back to the 2006 season, including an 11-0 record in night games over the last four seasons.  Saturday's game will be the third of five night games this season for the Spartans, including four-straight to start the season.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- There's not just one quarterback in Cleveland making a strong first impression in his rookie season.

Drew Saxton may never achieve Baker Mayfield's fame, though he aspires for an even more meaningful career.

As a true freshman at Division III Case Western Reserve University, it's virtually certain Saxton won't develop into the first pick of the NFL draft, as the Browns made Mayfield.

Case finally gets crack at Presidents

Posted: Oct 02, 2018

It’s been nearly three years since they faced each other on the football field, but Case Western Reserve and Washington & Jefferson are pretty familiar with each other.

The programs have been among the PAC’s elite, but didn’t actually meet on the gridiron the past two seasons due to the PAC’s unbalanced schedule. So, Saturday’s clash in Washington, Pennsylvania, is the squads’ first encounter since CWRU posted a 35-28 home win on Oct. 24, 2015.

Last year, both squads went 8-0 in PAC play and shared the championship. The league’s tiebreaker (strength of conference victories) gave the Presidents the PAC’s automatic bid to the playoffs, while the Spartans earned an at-large berth. They hoped for a showdown in the postseason, but the head-to-head matchup did not materialize.

They are two of the PAC favorites this year, too, and enter the game unbeaten – W&J is 5-0 overall and 4-0 in the PAC, while CWRU is 4-0, 3-0.

CLEVELAND -- “Defending DiSanto.”

That has been the mantra for the Case Western Reserve University men’s soccer team throughout the 2018 season, and should the Spartans be able to defend DiSanto Field twice more this weekend, there will be plenty of reason to celebrate on the University Circle campus.

Wins tonight against the 10th-ranked Kenyon Lords and Saturday night against either Penn State-Behrend or fourth-ranked Calvin College will earn the No. 19 Spartans a berth into the NCAA Final Four in Greensboro, North Carolina, on November 30.

Cam Brown grew up in the NBA and ended up a Division III football sack leader
By Eric Storms
STAFF WRITER

An elementary school-aged Cam Brown stood in his father’s office inside Quicken Loans Arena wearing a funky shirt, shorts and two mismatched tennis shoes. Much of his body was marked up in Sharpie. He believed that if he looked as embarrassing as possible, his mom wouldn’t take him to see the his father, Mike Brown, then-head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers.

But Brown had thought wrong. His mom forced him to go wearing exactly that and Mike remembers just about falling over when he saw his son in the arena. Growing up, despite always playing sports, Brown’s favorite pastime was reading, Mike said, and he’d often rather do so than watch the NBA. That’s something Brown had to do often with a father who has coached in the NBA for 18 years, including head coaching stints with Cleveland (2005-10, 2013-14) and the Los Angeles Lakers (2011-13).

Years later, Brown is still a basketball fan, but he found a different passion: football. Brown developed into one of the most elite pass rushers in Division III football, finishing his senior season at Case Western Reserve second in the country in sacks with 15 total.

Video shows deer crashing college baseball game in Ohio

By Brett Gubitosi

April 30, 2019 | 6:16pm | Updated

They’re the rookies of the deer.

It was bottom of the first inning with Case Western Reserve University’s baseball team up to bat — but suddenly away team Brandeis added three new players on the field — a trio of prancing deer.

“We have a deer time out,” said CWRU Assistant Athletic Director and commentator Jon Schwartz in a video posted to Youtube. “Some things just kind of speak for themselves folks.”

The animals made their way through the ballpark, darting by Brandeis’ confused outfielders, until they settled on left field as their prime seats for the game. The critters exited via right field about a minute later.

“And after the rude greeting, the deer will depart,” commentated Schwartz.

The Spartans received one of the two 'Pool B' bids to the tournament, awarded to independent teams or teams in conferences without an automatic bid to the tournament.

CWRU, which finished the year with a 22-13 overall record and is seeded second in the draw, will now face Otterbein, the winner of the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament and seeded third, on Friday, May 17th

Cleveland’s college football team should be pretty solid this year.

Returning Coach Mike Brown’s son, Cameron, who was #2 in sacks last year in the nation.

And statistically nationally ranked ... Sophomore QB and Junior WR.

I encourage everyone to check out at least one game this year at the unique and urban University Circle setting of DiSanto Field:
