CSX revives rail-connector proposal

By DAVID PATCH

BLADE STAFF WRITER

For those who live in southern Lake Township, it's the railroad construction proposal that keeps coming back.

After two previous false starts, CSX Transportation Corp. says it's serious this time about building a 1.6-mile connecting track to create a direct route to and from the south end of its Stanley Yard freight-car sorting complex west of Walbridge.

A five-person CSX delegation met briefly behind closed doors with township trustees Tuesday afternoon to advise them of the company's plans.

More at link above:

What's interesting about this is that even a simple project like this would help eliminate the very kind of bottlenecks that would help enable the Ohio Hub rail plan.  It would also have the net effect of taking more freight traffic off of local roads and highways, as well as reducing the number of trains that block crossings in the Walbridge area.

I hope this doesn't revert to another NIMBY issue as it has previously.

Wouldn't this also open up the possibility of allowing CSX freight traffic to be rerouted away from the at-grade Vickers Crossing with the busy NS line? I need to post a map...

Yes.

Cool. Here is what I had in mind. Is this close to what's being considered?

Those images are about 160K each. I have these in higher resolution versions, each about 2mb, in case you're interested.

Pretty close. compared to maps I've seen.
