Are those snowflakes I see?  Definately interesting...

Quite nice!

Don't think I've ever been to Sidney... looks interesting.

I love the architecture in these little towns!

Glad to see you found one of the Urbana Party Girls

Ha! You beat me to it!

Some of those houses are amazing!

The 4th photo of Urbana is one of my favorites.....these places look really nice!

LAMMMEEEEE

just playing. The Spot looks like my kind of place.

ColDayMan should win a pulitzer prize for these.

btw, those aren't snowflakes in the the skyline pic, just digital noise.

He's talking about the snowflake lights in RiverScape Park.

Ohio has so many cool looking smaller cities.  Gotta love these pics, thanks CDM.

sidney came up in discussion today. So in honor, i bump this colday thread

The five-story block building with the mansard roof in Urbana is an old hotel that was slated for demolition (and replacement by a lame, modern, scaled-down version) last year. There's been outcry and controversy. I don't know what the status is now.

Nice town.  Not far from some great racing at Eldora in New Weston.

The "five-story block buuilding with the mansard roof" is the Douglas Inn... this is from the Springfield News Sun:

Groups may reach agreement on Douglas Inn

Tuesday, October 10, 2006

Urbana city administration and the Champaign County Community Improvement Corporation could reach an agreement on the Douglas Inn before a court hearing on Oct. 17.

The Second District Ohio Circuit Court of Appeals hearing will take place at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 17 in the Champaign County Court of Appeals.

Urbana Director of Administration Bruce Evilsizor said all parties, which include Miami Scioto Development Company, the building's prospective buyers, want to avoid going to court.

The hearing has been rescheduled two times — June 26 and Sept. 15 — after Judge Roger Wilson granted the CIC a stay of execution on the building's Jan. 2 demolition. The CIC appealed to the higher court.

Pat Thackery, a co-owner of Miami Scioto, said the company submitted a stabilization plan to the Building Regulations Department in early September for review.

Evilsizor said the Building Regulations Department and fire department have been discussing if the plan meets public safety issues.

"The two parties are real close, and I think they are going to be able to come up with a stabilization plan acceptable to both sides," Evilsizor said.

The city's requirements for the stabilization plan, such as a sprinkler system and elevator, raised a dispute between the former city administration and Miami Scioto.

Miami Scioto owners have said adding those components were not standard for stabilization, while Fire Chief Jim McIntosh said he would risk firefighters' lives if he sent them into a building without a fire suppression system.

Beautiful pictures.  Small town Ohio is always a treat and suprise.

Those look like great towns.

As far as I'm concerned, these are at best central-western Ohio towns. Columbus being the center of central Ohio, these towns are west and a bit north. They're also north of 1-70. As we all know, Ohio geography revolves around Columbus.  :-D Nice pics though. While driving through Urbana there was a sign for a university there, but I saw no such thing looking down the streets there while driving.

Sidney and Piqua are directly north of Dayton.  Piqua is clearly in Southwest Ohio and Sidney is by simple media-marketing.  Ditto with Urbana.  The only line of ambiguity is Logan County, which can be in SW, NW, or Central Ohio.

Urbana University is southwest of downtown.

Columbus does not carry Urbana, let alone Piqua or Sidney (for obvious reasons).  Columbus treats Springfield as an edge city, much like Zanesville, Chillicothe, or Marion.  In reality, Springfield is much more connected to Dayton than Columbus.

Yeah.  When I divided up the state for my website, I put Springfield in SW with Cincy & Dayton, while I put Logan County in Central Ohio.

ok pope here's some more sydney trivia for conversation. imo one of the coolest one-off actors in the world is from sydney, oh. he was louis mackey, and he was the "anarchist" in richard linklater's first & best movie 'slacker.' everything he says in that movie is hilarious and quoteable, like for example: "remember, the passion for destruction is also a creative passion" and "charles whitman, now there was a man." i love that movie and mackey sure owned that role.

Not Sydney ;).

Great stuff Cdm.

I like the restaurant The Spot in downtown Sidney.  I went to its website, http://www.thespottoeat.com , but the graphics did not load on the front page.  :?
