Hi Everybody,

I've enjoyed reading some of the informative posts on this website. I have a couple of specific questions for any of you who might be able to help.

I'm going to be living in Garfield/Piatt Park, a place that I liked very much upon visiting and that seems to have a lot to offer. I consider myself very street smart, although I'm coming from a much smaller urban, more college-town area. I'll be commuting to UC pretty much five days a week. Many of the buses from dowtown (including the #17 and #19) swing by the campus. I've heard that things are a little sketchy on the Vine St. buses. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Also, I'm hoping to attend many of the performances in the Music Hall this year. Since it's only a mile away, walking seems the logical choice. As it's difficult to believe the inflated crime coverage of the media, can someone clue me in to what the actual risk would be in that area (or perhaps the safest path from Piatt to Washington Park)? One thing that has struck me about many of the "crime-related" posts on this site is that some seem to have difficulty in distinguishing the difference between panhandling and assault. Panhandling I can deal with. Assault is another matter.

Thanks for your help!

Shosty, welcome to the board and Cincinnati!

I live right around the corner from you (Shillito)! I will post more on your questions as soon as I get a little more time!

I ride the mighty 17 every day.

All the buses have bicycle racks with room for 2 bikes.

Leaving Music Hall & heading due south to the downtown area is your best bet & probably the most logical way to go anyway.

The 17 will also take you within a block of Findlay Market & on out to scenic Northside.

The biggest problem I have with the buses is that they totally crap out on weekends & only run til about midnight. You can take the bus to the nightlife but you have to deal with the crappy cab service to get home.

Or take your bike with you.

I am assuming you use a bike, sorry for the presumption if that is not the case.

Welcome to Cincinnati!  I think you will enjoy living downtown, especially near Piatt Park.

It's a straight shot up Elm St to Music Hall.  I wouldn't send my grandmother up there after midnight, but you will be just fine.  The CSO has an amazing student ticket special.

The bus service to campus is good on weekdays, but a lot less frequent on weekends.  The stop is right on Vine St.  I've taken the route hundreds of times without issues (and I pick it up in OTR).

shosty, Welcome to Cincinnati.  When will you be moving downtown?

As a driver for Community Cab, i'm slightly insulted by this allegation. I provide prompt (if semi-ghetto) late night cab service from 11pm til 7am or so every night. call 859-727-2900 or 513-240-0766 (my personal number).

natitownridah, can you offer a few tips about cab service in this area?  Such as, how early to call, or maybe best times to get a cab?  Even though I have lived in this area my entire life, I have only taken a cab about five times.

I think getting a cab in cincy is easy. I have taken one many times. In the downtown area/Mt. Adams/Covington/Newport, I have never had to call and can easily hail a cab within a quick block or two walk. In Clifton and everywhere else, unless it is a bar area, I ususally have to call but I only wait about 10-15 minutes for a pick up

Ditto!

Melanie, take it from a downtowner ... just walk out your (future) front door and one will pass by.

I have waited anywhere from 15 minutes to 4 hours.

I have had drivers drive slow & roundabout routes to milk the fare.

This expalins why dispatchers have no idea how long it will take for the next cab.

I have had surly, whiney & incoherent drivers.

But that's just most of the time.

I have had excellent service now and then.

I'm not concerned about getting a cab from downtown.  I usually just walk to a hotel and catch one there.  It's the return trip I'm wondering about.  :)  I have taken cabs from bars in Hyde Park and waited almost two hours.  I was just wondering if there was a way to avoid that.

I've never had any trouble, but then I'm not looking to catch a cab after last call, so maybe it's not as busy a time...

My apartment (Groton) is about 1/2 of a block from Piatt and I take the bus to UC everyday.  I have never had a problem, and the weekday bus schedule for the 17, 18, and 19 is pretty decent.  At the very least, it beats driving.
