Posted July 23, 200618 yr From a Memorial Day biz trip to LA. Best viewed to Arlo Guthrie's "Coming into Los Angeleeees"...though I myself was not bringing in a couple of "keys". And on the way out, a turn over the Pacific.
July 23, 200618 yr I really do love Los Angeles. Really fascinating city. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
July 23, 200618 yr Agreed- people love to poo-poo it but it is really something to behold. Unfortunately I had to pick up a rental car and drive right to Orange County...
July 23, 200618 yr One of the most disgusting places on earth. Every time I am there I just want to get out!

July 24, 200618 yr While I realize LA's flaws, sprawl, congestion, phoniness, I also enjoy it too -- love the energy, beaches, and well, gorgeous women who wear little clothes all year b/c of the weather... Also, I believe the growing rapid transit/commuter rail network is beginning to tame the sprawl, somewhat, and that LA's suddenly getting into TOD neighborhoods while transit is also helping downtown grow denser, as well. Good for them! If LA can make rapid transit work, why not Cleveland, Cincy or Columbus?
July 24, 200618 yr I've been to LA only once, and I remember being horrified by the view from the airplane. I've never seen anyplace that looks so apocalyptic from the air (particularly if you're coming in on a smoggy day). Once you're on the ground, though, there are some interesting places to be explored.
July 24, 200618 yr If you go to LA looking for a city in the traditional sense... you will probably be disappointed. If you want that, go to San Diego or San Fran. LA is best digested in pieces, instead of trying to process the whole. You can spend a day in Santa Monica, Venice, Pasadena, Anaheim, Long Beach, downtown, Griffith Park, the OC, the Valley, Beverly Hills, Hollywood, etc... Each is it's own unique city, that combined as a whole contribute to LA's greater appeal as a city.
July 30, 200618 yr I just flew back from L.A. (and boy! are my arms tired!). I had never been there and was very pleasantly surprised at how dense and urban the city is. Granted, I was only on Hollywood Boulevard and Downtown, but both had great architecture and character. Downtown on Broadway (I was at 6th and 7th) looks like the Times Square area 20 years ago: gritty, bustling, polyglot amid buses, subways and great buildings from the early 1900s.
August 2, 200618 yr I was just in LA for 2 weeks and, at first I really felt like the city was a sprawled out mess, but after leaving and having been to so many of the city's abosolutly amazing areas(Getty Center, Santa Monica, Venice, Downtown, the Palisades, Brentwood, etc), I now love LA.
August 2, 200618 yr In the first few pictures, the sprawl was pretty evident. But one could see some decent grid patterns and some density (Long Beach, near downtown, etc). I haven't been to LA since 1982, but I do keep up on what they're doing with development, transit etc. I'm long overdue for a return visit. BTW, I absolutely love this picture... August 2, 200618 yr One of the most disgusting places on earth. Every time I am there I just want to get out! I totally agree. Mostly because I hate driving! My future hometown :wtf: Sept. 25 is my last day as an Ohio resident :x You poor thing! I'll say a prayer!
