Crown Restaurant Group sets opening for Five on Vine eatery in OTR

A growing Cincinnati restaurant group is ready to unveil its fifth eatery, taking over the former Mercer space in Over-the-Rhine.

The Crown Restaurant Group is opening Five on Vine at 1324 Vine St. in OTR on Jan. 18. It is the restaurant group's fifth eatery since launching in 2018.

Five on Vine's menu offers an elevated, but approachable, take on American cuisine, with dishes like half Amish chicken prepared on a rotisserie and glazed with an apricot jus. The rotisserie is the centerpiece of the restaurant, providing the cooking ground for many of its dishes.

Big Chill, neighborhood bar with ice cream window, opens in $9M College Hill development

A bar with a walk-up soft serve ice cream window serving out onto a family-friendly patio just opened in Cincinnati's College Hill neighborhood.

"The reception has been really, really awesome," Wheatley told me. "So many people walk in and say they can't believe how great it looks. They've heard about it, but didn't know what to expect."

Sotto, Pepp & Dolores and Carlo & Johnny named by OpenTable as 'most romantic' in the country

Three Cincinnati restaurants have been named among the most romantic in the country in a new list by online reservation platform OpenTable.

OpenTable named downtown's Sotto, Over-the-Rhine's Pepp & Dolores and Montgomery's Carlo & Johnny as three of its 100 Most Romantic Restaurants in America for 2023.

The 100 Most Romantic Restaurants in America list is curated from more than 13 million diner reviews collected during 2022. Restaurants had to meet a minimum "overall" score and have a high number of qualifying reviews to be considered. They were then sorted by the percentage of reviews that labeled the restaurant "romantic."

The three Cincinnati restaurants were the only in the region to be named to the list – none from Northern Kentucky made the cut.

La Terza acquires College Hill Coffee Co. for first retail coffee shop

A Cincinnati coffee roaster has acquired a neighborhood coffee shop with more than three decades of history to serve as the brand's first dedicated retail location.

The coffee shop will continue to operate until March 1, and then close for rebranding and renovation until late spring.

College Hill Coffee Co. owner Tina Stoeberl told me the last three years of dealing with the pressures imposed upon the hospitality industry by the Covid-19 pandemic, coupled with the ongoing staffing shortage – she went from 26 full-time workers to 4 1/2 and a baker – made her feel that the time was right to retire from the business.

Struggling yes but not for customers, they have been busy but a disaster in regards to staffing. They have had almost their entire kitchen quit since opening. Welp…… lol. Royce has closed. A shocking downfall for what was suppose to be a flagship restaurant. I have reached out to some industry contacts for more info.

^Yikes.

Disappointing due to its location. It will likely be 2024 before something else opens there.

When Royce first opened I believe there were rumblings of the staff walking out (if I recall correctly). Not sure if that was related to lack of getting paid or the work environment.

It looks like Pearlstar closed as well, so it sounds like more of an issue with the owner than the location. It'll be interesting to see if something else takes over the space or if that owner will try a different concept that is less of a direct competition to Jeff Ruby's next door. I just don't know how many white table cloth restaurants we need right there in downtown, but I guess I'm just too poor to be the target audience.

It doesn't help to name a restaurant something that doesn't sound like a restaurant.

Not surprised.

A friend told me about their experience dining at Royce. They got seated with a friend, ordered drinks and an appetizer. It took 45 minutes to arrive. At that point they decided to cash out and get dinner elsewhere.

I also heard about an incident where the staff wasn't getting paid so they staged a walkout.

Boneheaded move to spend all that money on a nice restaurant buildout and then not have the place properly staffed / mistreat the staff you do have.

Jeff Ruby’s and Royce are not competition really besides them both selling food, Ruby’s is an ultra established local steakhouse that serves an entirely different cuisine and experience than Royce. Also I wouldnt describe it as white table cloth it was conceptualized as a polished but casual French brassiere. I would think 3CDC wants something there that compliments Ruby’s next door, they certainly don’t want a fast casual place at that corner.

Yeah I love the design and build out of this place. Which makes me wonder if 3CDC will just simply find a well known operator to just re open it. It would be crazy to see them rip all that out for a brand new concept.

Restaurant drama is hilarious.

If 3CDC is willing to give them a good enough deal, they can make great restaurants. 3CDC should be looking for a winner - not a risky newcomer - after Terry Raley's implosion.

Gomez announced they will NOT being opening a location in Pleasant Ridge after all. The building is just not in good shape for a restaurant. Hopefully they'll open one in the new development being built at Montgomery and Lester.

A Northern Kentucky book store and coffee house is expanding with a third location.

The Dayton location will carry roughly 10,000 to 12,000 titles at any given time, with a focus on antiquarian and hard-to-find books, especially locally authored and published books, Hunt told me.

Cincinnati's Teak OTR opening restaurant at Loveland Station development

A local restaurateur is opening a second location for his Over-the-Rhine Thai and sushi restaurant at a suburban destination.

Chanaka De Lanerolle is opening Teak Thai in the former LoveBird restaurant space at 110 S. Second St. at the $12 million Loveland Station development in the Cincinnati suburb. De Lanerolle told me he hopes to open by late spring.

De Lanerolle said he was approached after the space's former tenant, LoveBird, closed in January. He said he was attracted to the concentration of activities and establishments surrounding the Loveland Bike Trail, as well as the plethora of other quality restaurants in downtown Loveland.
