Chef Jeremy Faeth opening diner Pike Street in Covington

A Northern Kentucky chef is gearing up to open his third restaurant since 2020.

Chef Jeremy Faeth, founder of the Cedar Culinary Group, is opening a diner called Pike Street at 9 W. Pike St. in Covington, with the goal of opening April 4. It is his third Covington project, behind Cedar, which opened in July 2020, and Yuca, which opened October 2021.

Faeth told me that he's going for a modern diner feel with Pike Street, and the food will be familiar to that setting with dishes like apple pie-stuffed waffles and French toast, but with a twist.

Actually a little bit, it seemed pretty busy a lot of times. But understandable tho since the food was pretty trash the few times I had it.

I think the hype has died down with it. I remember when it first opened it was a big deal and was pretty good when I went but I’ve only been twice in the 5 years it’s opened. I think it catered more to people visiting than it did to locals.

Looking at the Ohio locations the only one that’s not in a casino is in Cleveland so wonder if they eventually move to more of a casino restaurant. Could also be that the owners of the building didn’t renew their lease with them and want to do something else with the space.

^The Cleveland location is actually at the casino, but not in it.

Cincinnati burger restaurant Tickle Pickle opening Fort Thomas location in former 915 Pub and Grill

Shortly after opening a second location inside of a local craft brewery, a Northside burger restaurant is already working on its third.

Tickle Pickle, which opened its original Northside location in 2015 and a second inside Listermann Brewing Co. in December 2022, is already working on a third inside the former 915 Pub and Grill at 915 N. Fort Thomas Ave. in Fort Thomas. Owner Lea Dickman told me she hopes to be open by the middle of April.

Dickman, who owns Tickle Pickle with her husband, Raymond Bowman, said that the 915 Pub and Grill space was actually in consideration for their second restaurant location, and she was in conversations to take it over, but those stalled and the owners of Listermann reached out in the meantime.

Cincinnati's Mita's, Nolia and Elaine Bentz named James Beard finalists

Two Cincinnati restaurants and one local pastry chef are among the finalists for the 2023 James Beard Foundation Restaurant and Chef Awards.

Agave & Rye owner Epic Brands opening Trashy Dawg chicken restaurant

The owner of fast-growing taco chain Agave & Rye is launching a new restaurant concept, one she plans to grow at a clip of 50 locations per year.

Yavonne Sarber, founder and CEO of Epic Brands, the parent company of Agave & Rye, is opening her first location of Trashy Dawg in Huntsville, Ala., adjacent to that city's Agave & Rye, in May. She said she is in lease negotiations for a Cincinnati location, with hopes of opening by October.

While Agave & Rye is a full-service, sit down restaurant that combines proper French cooking techniques in the vehicle of the taco, Trashy Dawg will be a quick service concept. Sarber told me Trashy Dawg will be more technology-based, with orders placed at kiosks or online. There won't be servers, she said, but there will be hospitality employees who make sure the surroundings are clean and customers are happy.

Rusk Kitchen + Bar opens in East Walnut Hills; here's a look inside

The owners of the Establishment in Oakley just opened their latest restaurant – complete with a rooftop deck – in East Walnut Hills.

Cincinnati owner of Richie's restaurants Richard Bhoolai indicted on tax fraud charges

The owner of a longtime Cincinnati restaurant chain has been indicted on charges of tax fraud that allegedly funded more than $1 million in gambling activity.

Richard Bhoolai, the founder, owner and CEO of Richie’s restaurants, was arrested April 29 by deputies of the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office in coordination with the Internal Revenue Service's criminal division, according to a news release from the IRS’ Cincinnati field office.

Court documents allege that from the fourth quarter of 2016 through the fourth quarter of 2018, Bhoolai’s business withheld federal taxes from employees’ paychecks, but failed to file quarterly employment tax returns and transmit the payroll taxes it collected to the IRS. As the sole owner, Bhoolai had responsibility to collect, account for and pay over the taxes.

The release states that during this period, “it is alleged that Bhoolai caused Richie’s Fast Food Restaurants to make hundreds of thousands of dollars of expenditures for his personal benefit, including using business proceeds to engage in gambling activity in excess of $1 million.”

Former Sotto chef Danny Combs to open French-inspired restaurant Colette in former Zula space

A longtime Cincinnati chef is branching out to launch his own restaurant concept, taking up residence in an Over-the-Rhine space that formerly housed one of the neighborhood’s longest-running tenants before shuttering last year.

Danny Combs, formerly of Sotto and Boca, recently signed a lease with Cincinnati Center City Development Corp. (3CDC) to open Colette where Zula Restaurant & Wine Bar once resided at 1400 Race St.

Two longtime Over-the-Rhine residents with decades of bar and restaurant experience between them are opening a new concept in their neighborhood – looking to revive a recently shuttered spot on Vine Street last home to oyster bar Pearlstar.

Tom Stephen and Garth Lieb – the duo behind Liberty's Bar & Bottle, a craft beer and wine bar; and the Pony, a bar and restaurant, both located on Main Street – signed a lease with Cincinnati Center City Development Corp. (3CDC) for the space at 1220 Vine St.

In a news release, 3CDC said the redesigned space will continue to focus on “all things oyster,” similar to Pearlstar, while also highlighting the location’s indoor and outdoor spaces: The restaurant includes 2,000 square feet inside and an outdoor courtyard of equal size.

Onolicious Hawaii restaurant sets opening along Court Street Plaza downtown

A restaurant first born at a Cincinnati food hall specializing in tropical island fare is making final preparations for its official opening in a new, and much larger, space downtown.

Onolicious Hawaii, which first took up residence in 2021 at Oakley Kitchen, will open to the public Tuesday, May 23, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. at its new home at 1005 Walnut St. along Court Street Plaza, serving up brunch, lunch and dinner.

Onolicious Hawaii owner Vincente Benedett, who co-owns the restaurant with his wife, Elena, first announced the move downtown in November 2022. Onolicious had outgrown its 120-square-foot stall at Oakley Kitchen, a food hall located inside the former Duck Creek Antique Mall at 3715 Madison Road. Onolicious closed there at the end of February as the Benedetts prepared for their move.

Solstice restaurant sets opening in former Suzie Wong's in East Walnut Hills

An East Walnut Hills restaurant is opening after more than a year of delays.

Owners Chris Wolfe, Andy Smith and Brad Lauck, first aimed to open Solstice – their tropical taco and shareables joint – in spring 2022. The restaurant is opening at 1544 Madison Road in DeSales Plaza at the former home of Suzie Wong’s, an Asian restaurant that closed for good in 2021 after nearly a decade of business.

The group of owners first collaborated on a cocktail-focused bar nearby in East Walnut Hills called Anjou, and eventually decided to expand into the food industry.
