Just Q’in BBQ expanding to new Cincinnati neighborhood

A Cincinnati barbecue restaurant – and a presidential lunchtime favorite – is expanding with a new location in the city.

Just Q’in, known for its Texas-style pork and brisket, is moving into College Hill. It will take over the former MashRoots space – and a neighboring streetfront property – at 5901-03 Hamilton Ave. MashRoots, which specializes in Puerto Rican-style fare, closed at the site Aug. 13.

The news, announced Oct. 10 by College Hill Community Urban Redevelopment Corp., was billed as a “momentous addition” by the community development group. The restaurant has set a tentative opening date for November with a preview popup planned for this weekend.

A Cincinnati-based vegan cheese line is ready to debut its first brick-and-mortar location in a booming Cincinnati neighborhood.

Fast-growing chain Scooter’s Coffee plotting new location in Lebanon

A national drive-thru coffeehouse chain with more than 700 locations is eyeing its second Cincinnati-area location. A vacant lot neighboring the proposed building site, under the same ownership, could open the door to future development.

Scooter’s Coffee, a popular Nebraska-based brand that serves hot and iced coffee drinks, teas, smoothies, pastries, breakfast sandwiches and more, aims to open at 1002 W. Main St. in Lebanon. The city's planning commission reviewed the project at its Oct. 17 meeting; drive-thrus are currently permitted through the site’s existing general commercial zoning.

If approved, Scooter’s will erect a 664-square-foot kiosk on the almost 8-acre site.

Razzo pizzeria and wine bar opens in Cincinnati's Pendleton neighborhood

The owners of a Pendleton design firm and a nearby bar have launched their newest venture, a Roman-inspired pizzeria and natural wine bar.

Design and branding firm Guilfoil & Wulfson, the owners of Bar Saeso and the Carriage House, a luxury rental, opened pizzeria Razzo at 1201 Broadway in the former Boomtown Biscuits & Whiskey restaurant space Oct. 18. Boomtown closed at the space in July 2022.

The owners describe Roman-style pizza as taking many forms, from thin and crispy to thick, pan-baked pies. Razzo specializes in the deep-dish, rectangular slices with interesting toppings, similar to Detroit-style pizza, but lighter and less filling than the Michigan pizza.

Birdie’s Coffee Co. opens in long-vacant Norwood corner shop

A husband-and-wife duo has opened their second business in Norwood: a coffee shop whose name serves as a nod to a loved one’s tattoos –in a space that's been completely renovated with the community in mind.

Birdie’s Coffee Co., located at 4030 Forest Ave., celebrated its official debut Oct. 7 after soft opening in September. It’s the latest venture by Pete and Miranda Ventura, founders of Ventura Builders Group, a residential and commercial remodeling company.

The cafe sits less than a mile from a 6,000-square-foot event center and office building in Norwood, also named Ventura, which the couple rehabbed and opened in June 2021.

Galley on the Levee food hall opens at Newport on the Levee

Galley on the Levee opens Saturday, Oct. 28, with four food vendors, a signature bar, patio and a pass-through window - a long-awaited project that results from a collaboration between Newport on the Levee and Pittsburgh-based Galley Group, a self-styled accelerator for chefs.

The food hall is opening on the first floor of the former Exchange building across from Cold Stone Creamery. The building previously housed Barnes & Noble Booksellers. Galley will host an official grand opening starting at 4 p.m. Oct. 28 before its full debut Wednesday, Nov. 1.

The four food vendors, announced in two waves this summer, are:

'Not your typical brewpub': Wyoming's newest eatery, Gilligan’s on the Green, sets opening

A former fire station situated in the Cincinnati suburb of Wyoming has been transformed once again – this time into an Irish- and American-themed brewpub serving up fare like Reuben rolls and filet mignon alongside a selection of nearly three dozen draft beers formulated by a West Side-based craft brewery.

Gilligan’s on the Green will debut to the public Friday, Nov. 3. It’s the fourth restaurant by EP Investment Group – founded in 2009 as a residential redevelopment firm – and its first outside the confines of its Westwood home base.

EP’s portfolio includes Ivory House, a white-tablecloth steakhouse on Harrison Avenue; W Bar + Bistro, which took over the West Side’s Henke Winery in 2022; and its latest concept, Aubrey and Zach’s Ice Cream, which opened earlier this year.

Atwood Oyster House sets opening in OTR in former Pearlstar restaurant space

A new Over-the-Rhine restaurant serving up oysters and seasonal seafood has set its opening along Vine Street, the latest venture for long-time neighborhood residents and business owners Garth Lieb and Tom Stephen.

Atwood, which replaces the recently shuttered Pearlstar at 1220 Vine St., will celebrate its grand opening Wednesday, Nov. 15. The restaurant will also offer a reservation-only tasting preview leading up to the debut starting Thursday, Nov. 9.

Aren't they still in a lower like level of Carew? With no office tenants and the building under much needed redevelopment this isn't surprising. I wonder if there is a way to incorporate them into said redevelopment?? But if you're blaming food trucks for your failure before your actual location, maybe their mentality holds them back more than anything???

They replaced the Frisch's that was there for a year or two.  Honestly, it is a pretty prime location.  They also mentioned in another post that 3CDC takes 7% of profits (I assume) on top of rent.  It seemed like their main gripe was the city giving supposed preferential treatment to 3CDC over them.  I would tend to agree with you that it seems like it was mostly them not running the business as well as they could have.  The abrupt closure would indicate they just ran out of money.

I feel bad for them. But with the convention center slated to close for about 18 months, that entire area is gonna struggle. Only Ruby has the draw to survive this period of fewer potential customers. I actually wonder how Mortons has remained in place as long as it has.

I always wanted to love Hathaway's but the food was always overpriced and wasn't really great quality. Silver Ladle is a million times better when it comes to bang for your buck.

KungFood Chu's Amerasia owners to open Mainstrasse cafe

The owners of a beloved Covington restaurant are taking on a new business venture.

Kung Brew, from the couple behind KungFood Chu’s AmerAsia, will open at 640 Main St. in the Mainstrasse neighborhood by February 2024.

The cafe will focus on espresso-based drinks, traditional Chinese tea service and bubble tea, according to Hana Chu, who opened AmerAsia on Madison Avenue with her chef husband, Johnny, in 2008.

? Hathaways is pretty much at fountain square, there is a ton of foot traffic in front of this space. I have been to the restaurant and I’m sorry to say it’s basic trash diner food. The truth is the competition around that block was too much for them. Also the convention center closure is not going to hurt those restaurants much at all, fountain square is….fountain square,  It has stand alone heavy foot traffic. Lots of new tenants have opened recently and multiple new places are under construction at this moment. Keep in mind the convention center isn’t a giant driver which is why its being renovated to begin with lol. Also it’s easy to forget the 1000+ plus new workers that are now at The Foundry, the area is thriving.

Sidenote: That Morton’s is horrible.

It’s sad because of the history for sure but it’s just very competitive downtown now. You can’t just serve sub par food with sub par service and hope the sheer number of downtown workers/visitors will keep you afloat. Downtown really is a different beast now, I’ve even heard a new “flagship restaurant” may be going into the Saks ground floor space when renovated.

Also what’s going on with the new indoor golf place, their signage is almost non existent and the windows are too tented/dark. So many of these owners are clearly not the brightest and wasting so much money on these ill conceived concepts.

I think the windows have to be tinted to keep out sun for the simulators to function properly.

Ive gone to Five Iron two times trying to like it. Both times there was only 1 employee so it takes forever to get a drink even if you are sitting at the bar. The second time we went we had a group of about 6 and ordered food then 45 mins later the bartender said he forgot to put in the order but even if we wanted food they didnt have any to serve which was really odd.

Thats unfortunate if true, and if thats the case you would think they would opt for some flashy signage that stands out. Wouldn’t be surprised if this place has a short life.

Wow. So slow it’s not worth staffing a server? Yikes. I’ve heard similar stories.

I wouldn't for certain say that the cause of not having a server is slow business, the place had just opened when we went and there were some other folks in there using the simulators it just seemed extremely poorly run. A start up company that brands itself as "cool and techy" so they get a bunch of money to expand super quick but lack the infrastructure to support the expansion.

The two times I've went to Five Iron the service was fine, and saw about 5-6 employees moving around.

Hathaway's Diner owner blames city for closure after 68 years in Carew Tower

Hathaway’s Diner, a mainstay in downtown Cincinnati, has closed its doors.

Owner Danny Holbrook authored a Facebook post Nov. 8 to say the diner would shutter the following day:

Quote

Very sad day for me personally. Between the city with all the food trucks. Plus not as many people working downtown. It just killed our business. Wish I could do something to change it but just not possible. We loved serving the people of Cincinnati for 68 years. Ten years ourselves. Thanks and love to all of you.

“The city is the one shutting us down," Holbrook added in a comment to the post.

...

A 3CDC spokesman offered the following statement: "We were saddened to see the news of Hathaway’s Diner closing, but we were confused by their social media post announcing the closure. Hathaway’s is not a 3CDC tenant, we’ve had no involvement in their business and no discussions with them about their operations."

Sucks! I loved that place and though their new location was great!

Walking downtown today and didn’t realize that OKTO had closed.  It sure how long they’ve been closed.

In Clifton Heights, the new Taste of Belgium is open, but its sign is very small, so it doesn't look open.  Not good.

Meanwhile, Pieology, Waffle House, Keystone, and the St. Clair's spaces are all vacant at U Square.  So we have both the highest enrollment in UC history and many high-profile vacancies.

A 25-year food industry veteran is expanding in the region with plans to open a second location in a vacant space at Warren County’s Deerfield Towne Center.

Truva Turkish Kitchen will take over the former Maplewood Kitchen and Bar spot at the shopping plaza, located at 5065 Deerfield Blvd. Owner Murat Karahan told me he plans to open at the location by mid-January 2024.

It’s a big step up – literally – for Karahan and Truva. The new space measures around 7,500-square-feet, roughly double his existing location at 8060 Montgomery Road in Sycamore Township.

Esquire names Nolia Kitchen in OTR to Best New Restaurants in America list

An Over-the-Rhine eatery has been named as one of Esquire magazine's Best New Restaurants in America.

Despite opening in 2022, Esquire gave Chef Jeffrey Harris' Nolia Kitchen at 1405 Clay St. a nod on its 2023 Best New Restaurants in America list, which featured 50 dining destinations across the country.

The magazine opens by recounting an anecdote about how the restaurant, which specializes in smoked dishes, was forced to ditch its outdoor smoker after complaints from a neighbor.

I agree. And this gets to what @taestellwas discussing on another thread recently.  The makeup of OTRs business reflect that OTR is (was) the hottest spot to for a night out. As wallets tighten, tastes change, and competition from other NBDs heats up, there's going to be some change in the makeup of OTRs businesses.  As the population of the CBD and OTR continue to increase, we will see more resident-focused businesses come to the fore.

I've been to Milwaukee a few times over the years, and I'm always struck by how different the makeup of their dense areas is.  (At least it feels like) there's so many more residential units in their urban areas and there's convenience stores/bodegas all over the place in their neighborhoods.  They feel much more 'lived-in.'  I know the reason is that we happen to have a bunch of large HQs downtown, which made our downtown more office-worker friendly, but the difference is striking.

Lucy Blue Pizza returning to Cincinnati's Over-the-Rhine neighborhood

Lucy Blue Pizza is expanding and moving back to its original stomping grounds in Over-the-Rhine.

Lucy Blue OTR officially opened Nov. 29. It's located at 1301 Vine St. in the site of the former pizza parlor, Venice on Vine.

Officials with Lucy Blue did not respond to a request for comment on the move as of this posting.

Salazar is closing in OTR and is looking for a larger space outside of OTR. Owner hopes to turn the current into something else. Have a feeling the urban basin will be taking a hit this winter with closings.

Im thinking the old Saks Fifth Avenue future Restaurant Space could be the pick for Salazar. Just across from his Mitas restaurant. And the urban basin isn’t taking a hit at all. Unfortunately many folks for some reason tend to pay more attention to closings but overlook the openings sadly. New places are opening faster than these closings. Razzo opened a couple months ago, Atwood opened a month ago and Colette just opened last week. Davidson is under construction, The new Bourbon Restaurant is under construction along with too many to name lol.
