Yeah people love to freak out when a restaurant or bar closes, especially if it's in downtown or OTR.  That industry has a crazy high failure rate so there's always going to place closing and new ones opening every year.

More of a macro-comment, but when Restaurants close in OTR or Downtown it makes headlines and people immediately point and say "see that area is failing" (with a good amount of folks who take joy in seeing places close in urban areas). But restaurants close everywhere. Maplewood closed in Mason and no one bats an eye.

Largely because "foodies" have no loyalty.  They are eager to "try" new restaurants and make some sort of big & bold declaration about them to their foodie friends, but then don't go back more than twice even if they assert that the place is great, because they're too busy "trying" the next-big-thing.

Chain restaurants and sports bars stick around for decade after decade because they aren't going after that same fickle audience.

They're a big part of the reason any time a new restaurant opens millions must be spent on remodeling. You can't just change the sign and maybe paint a little like restaurants in Europe do. Everything has to be a Hail Mary here.

Quite Frankly food truck opens first brick-and-mortar location in collaboration with the Cheesecakery in Madisonville

Cincinnati food truck Quite Frankly is partnering with dessert and coffee shop the Cheesecakery to open its first brick-and-mortar location in Madisonville.

“We are coming back to our roots,” Quite Frankly co-owner and Cincinnati Food Truck Association President Amy Flottemesch told me.

She started the business with her husband, Stephen Komissarov back in March 2014, testing recipes on the streets of Madisonville. The couple met Cheesecakery food truck owner Liz Field through the association in 2016 and developed a friendship.

I have been watching some bicycling videos in England where the cycling club takes breaks on long-distance rides and it appears that the "Chipotle chic/microbrewery string light/shipping container/picnic table patio" 1-2 combination, to the detriment of traditional bars and restaurants.  It's the exact same yuppie Milennial/Gen Z impulse that exists here where there is a strong aversion to the old working class stuff that went largely unchanged for 100+ years (and was celebrated by Generation X).  Ostensibly it's for health purposes - to get away from cigarette smoke, beer, and fried food - but it's really much more of a class marker, since the food probably isn't much healthier.

A lot of things are trying to get away from beer since it doesn't do much and is way too filling.

The Fix Coffeehouse expands to East Walnut Hills following closure of Scripps Center location downtown

The Fix Coffeehouse & Bar just opened a new location in East Walnut Hills.

The soft opening was held Friday, Dec. 1. Co-owner Keith Coombs said it’s been a long time coming getting into this new spot, which is located at 2835 Woodburn Ave. in the former Symposium space.

“This was the end of the sprint,” Coombs told me.

He opened his first location in Walnut Hills in January 2020, just 10 weeks before the “world imploded,” he said.

The problem is that most "craft" microbrew beer is complete crap.  It tastes weird at best, it makes you feel like crap right now and tomorrow, and it's 3X as expensive as normal beer.

This is what the young generation thinks is "beer".

Between 1980 and 2010, a college student could easily drink a six pack of Bud, Miller, etc., without ill effect, and it was cheap.  Now, almost nobody can afford, let alone drink six draft beers at a microbrewery.  Plus, microbreweries aren't open late, the bands are all Sublime cover bands, there is no dancing, and families are all over the place.

The Brickery Cafe and Play opens Lego-themed destination at Newport on the Levee

A new Lego-themed cafe is now open for business at Newport on the Levee.

The Brickery Café and Play is the first Lego-inspired cafe in the United States, according to a news release. It officially opened to the public Friday, Dec. 1.

Tri-State native Daniel Johnson and his wife, Serenity, are co-owners. Daniel Johnson, a linguistics expert, said he decided to start his first small business after years in the corporate world.

“I was just getting in the shower one day, and it just popped in my head. It’s like a board game cafe but with Legos,” he told me. “I was like, ‘I think that could be something,’ and from there, I found out it didn't exist yet.”

I'm always so amused at what you think life is like for young people in 2023. It might not be possible to be more out of touch. News alert: Young people still like to drink cheap beer and you can go to any college or twenty something bar and see them drinking lots of it.

I've only had Yoli's brunch and it was really good. The owner is exactly right in his statement, "we opened way too late in the pool season to build any traction." Better luck next year.

As a side note, I want to plug The Pony (another bar/restaurant from the same owners) which I think is more known as just a bar, but also has really good food. The focus is mostly bar food (wings, fries, Friday fish frys, beef on weck), but they have recently been doing Wednesday night dinner specials each week and offering deserts that look awesome.

Lick My Chicken: Agave & Rye's Yavonne Sarber launches new ghost kitchen concept

Attention fried chicken lovers. Lick My Chicken, a new ghost kitchen concept, is now live at all Agave & Rye locations.

It's the latest rollout by concept creator and Epic Brands restaurant group CEO Yavonne Sarber, and she’s confident her chicken is better than market leaders like Canes and Chick-fil-A.

"It’s absolutely delicious chicken,” Sarber told me. “It’s all hand-battered and fried to order. Nothing is done out of a bag.”

Hilton Netherland Plaza hotel to reopen former Orchids at Palm Court restaurant as The 1931

By Brian Planalp – Reporter, Cincinnati Business Courier

Jan 5, 2024

The Hilton Netherland Plaza Hotel will reopen its restaurant for the first time since the pandemic closure of Orchids at Palm Court.

The rebranded concept, dubbed The 1931, will open at the beginning of February, John Gaydos, the hotel’s general manger, told the Business Courier.

“It’s an homage to when the hotel opened and to its classical beginning in an upscale environment,” Gaydos said of the name. “We’ve got the menu locked in. It’ll feature what you would have seen on a menu back in the day.”

The hotel’s current executive chef, Bruce Dillon, will lead the kitchen. Dillon was executive chef for a decade at Snoqualmie Casino in his hometown of Seattle. He assumed the same role at the Hilton Netherland in June 2022.

Young Buck Deli announces brick-and-mortar location in former Holtman's Donuts space in Over-the-Rhine

Queen City culinary powerhouse couple Brian and Caitlin Young are expanding their Young Buck Sandwich Pop-Up into a brick-and-mortar space in Over-the-Rhine.

Young Buck Delicatessen, which is in the former Holtman’s Donuts spot at 1332 Vine St., is slated to open this spring. An exact date was not disclosed.

“I’m excited to introduce people to what deli meat should be,” Caitlin Young told me. “It should look like it came from an animal, not just the mystery meat from a bag.”

Unfortunate that there is no plan for the former Nation in Pendleton (per the CBC):

Quote

Salzburn said he currently has no plans for the Pendleton space.

“At this point the Nation Kitchen & Bar location there is closed. We’re focused on this location right now,” he said.

Razzo, Hart & Cru, Pendleton Parlor, and Urbana seem to do really well. Having another bar or restaurant in the former Nation space would really help establish that pedestrianized block of Broadway as a nice NBD.
