^^ Not surprised.  Bad service, so-so food and it wasn't a full service restaurant like the other Jalapeno's (which I do like).

well, it looks like there is already another restaurant ready to take its place according to the article.

Is ingredients still open until 7PM?  I took my parents there over the weekend and they LOVED it!

Ingredients frustrates me.  They keep decreasing their hours.  I stopped by yesterday around 5:30 pm to buy a salad to take home, and I wanted to create my own.  I found out that they started closing their kitchen at 3:00 a couple of months ago.  They also close at 4 PM on Saturday.  I did not buy anything.  Until they extend hours, I will not be going back again.

Once downtown gets a stronger residential base it won't be a problem :]

I'm surprised that a hotel the size of the Westin can't support a place like that into the evening by itself.  Isn't that the only food option in the hotel?  If I was checking into a hotel that cost as much as that for business travel, I'd be shocked to find no bar (at all) and no restaurant on site open past 3:00.

This surprises me too, and I even mentioned it to someone working at Ingredients.  I received a dirty look and was told "We do offer 24 hour room service."  It's really too bad because I do find the food at Ingredients to be pretty good, but I won't be eating there for a long time.  That probably doesn't matter because they are packed for lunch, so I'm sure the opinion of one downtown resident means crap to them.

There is McCormick and Schmick's in the Westin, and they do have a bar.  However, if I was spending multiple days at that hotel, I would like lower cost options as well.

I stayed at the Westin a couple days this past winter when my house died on me.

I was amazed at the lack of amenities at the place. I had breakfast at Ingredients one AM & was not impressed.

The Westin actually charges for internet service & has no method of providing printing either.

WHAT?!?!!??  How can anyone charge for internet service...especially at the Westin.  There is FREE wifi available most places downtown (and specifically at Fountain Square), from the Lilly Pad service.  Seems kind of ridiculous to me.

Is there any access to McCormick and Schmick's from the Westin without going outside?

Its pretty common I think... I've stayed at a lot of hotels that charge for internet service but its absolutely ridiculous. It cant cost the hotel THAT much.

I brought my laptop to the downtown library and thought they had free wireless but it brought me to a screen wanting my credit card info. It was pretty expensive.

I paid $15 for 24 hours of crappy internet service from the Detroit Westin (in Southfield, actually) just a week or so ago.  I've stayed in some very nice Starwood properties, but that one was NOT among them...

Definitely a stupid policy...the next day we stayed in a cheap motel that offered free wifi...

I could see the LillyPad network from the Cinti Westin but it appeared to be blocked - that is, I got some weird message that was different than just trying to log in to somebody else's network. A little hotel in Rapid City, SD had a setup that was kind of clunky but you could send a URL to an email address & the front desk would print web pages out & you could then go to the desk to pick up the prinouts.

I saw no similar service at teh Westin.

LOL, Randy you would be surprised.  When I was in Amsterdam last month, the Hilton charged €28 Euro a day which is $37 USD.  T-Mobile in Germany for the two weeks I was there in January was €19 a day.  Most hotels I travel to all over the world charge for internet.  The reason it isn't free is because most business travelers like myself with pay the money and expense it back to our company or customer.  Unfortunately this makes the person on personal travel suffer.  When I was in Europe last month, I didn't have an internet connection once because I refused to pay for it on my own dime.

I believe Holiday Inn and Best Western hotel chains don't charge for internet but other than that it is quite common... unfortunately.  On one occasion when I was at the downtown Boston Hilton, they had free WiFi in the lobby but not in the room, I discovered that I could go to the lobby and connect for free, then take my laptop to my room and the free connection was still valid.

In one of the stanger sources for downtown development news...I heard Jeff Ruby this morning on the Howard Stern show.  Without going into great detail about how this came about, Ruby said that he is working on developing an entertainment district in Cincinnati and he had chatted up Nick Lachey at the Derby because he wanted him to think about doing something next to the proposed Bootsy Ruby's.

Restaurant closed after car runs into building

By Joe Wessels

Post contributor

Washington Platform Saloon & Restaurant, a popular downtown eatery, is closed until engineers can figure out how to safely reopen the establishment after a car knocked out a corner pillar, nearly causing the building to collapse.

The building has been ordered closed and to remain vacant by the Cincinnati Building and Inspections Department after the driver of a car lost control Thursday morning and bumped into a key support holding it up.

Another reason to become a less auto-centric city!  I drove by the other day and thought that they might have been rehabbing the building...guess not.

:drunk:

I love Penn Station subs.  I have never had an official Philly sub from Philly but if it tastes as good as Penn Station then wow.

i have heard they are actually much worse in philly

Atlanta Bread Company is closed.  They have a sign saying closed until further notice.

I'm not surprised to see them go under.  I used to go there 1-2 times a week.  However, the service kept getting worse.  They used to have all these great soups, but they drastically cut back on them.  They must have had a huge turnover because I rarely saw the same person twice, and no one recognized me as a frequent customer.

Now would be a great time for a Panera to open up.

Next to the Westin on Vine street directly across from JeanRo there looks to be a new restaurant under construction called "Mythos".  I didn't see anything in this thread that mentioned it.  Does anyone know anything about it?  Will it be a Greek restaurant?  Isn't there a Mythos in Newport?

Yes, and there is also one on 7th St.  that's open for lunch M-F.  It is Greek food.  I wonder if this is  a new location, or if they are moving?

I thought that I had heard a long time ago  they were trying to relocate or open a place somewhere near Fountain Square.  That is great news if true!  I ate lunch at the one in Newport yesterday.

I couldn't agree more...let me repost this from a little while ago:

I think that a Panera Bread would be great downtown!  But so far my rants have fallen on deaf ears with the franchise owners here.  However, I think us UrbanOhioans can make an impact.

They conduct these online surveys and have an comment section at the end of the survey.  I am asking that you fill out the survey and tell them that you would like to see a Panera Bread downtown.  They are always looking for new locations, lets steer them in the direction of downtown!  The franchise owners and their corporate staff actually read these things...so we CAN make a difference!

Here is the link to the survey.  It will ask you a couple of questions that you will need to know.  Fill out 3055 for the store number at the beginning of the survey (that is for the Calhoun location).  Then enter a 3 digit number for the order number...use a number between 200-400 to be safe.  Then the rest is up to your imagination, it is a quick survey and I really do think this can make a difference and get another place to expand into downtown!

http://www.panerasurvey.com/

I think randy is a large panera stockholder... or at least acts like he is.

Doesn't Panera get a lot of business in the evening as well? The problem with downtown is that lunch is really by far the most profitable time to do business. They've probably already considered downtown, but I'll fill out the survey regardless.

I've gone to Paneras in the evening, and they are not always crowded.  Perhaps they were reluctant to move with ABC in business?

That would be me.

I went to high school with the owner's son. They originally wanted a FS location, but the leasing agents wanted too much. So much for getting the local man in.

Panera's main business comes during the lunch hours...evening business is a bonus.  Most Panera's do poorly during the evening/dinner hours (hence the launching of Crispani's for evening hours only).  A huge portion is also catering (VIA Panera)...which I would imagine would be huge in the largely untapped downtown market for Panera.

I've gone to Paneras in the evening, and they are not always crowded.  Perhaps they were reluctant to move with ABC in business?

From my discussions with upper-management; my understanding is that they are hesitant to go into urban settings in general.  For example, the Calhoun location is the most urban location in the franchise and it has the most security features ($$$) and has various other problems due to poor design in the multi-use building that it is in (service features...loading/unloading, etc).  I think that it doesn't currently fit this Panera franchise's "strategy", but I think that can easily change with more demand...and lack of room for expansion in the 'burbs.  Their urban locations have also done quite well financially, so I would hope that they are warming up to the idea.  Downtown residents/businesses need to make them feel welcome though and convince them its a winning strategy.

I think randy is a large panera stockholder... or at least acts like he is.

On a side note, I have NO money to have any vested interest in ANY company.  I just think it would be a great fit for both downtown and Panera.  I would comment about other locations for downtown, but I don't have the connections/knowledge of the inner-workings like I do with Panera.  I am very passionate about the things I do...hence my passion with Panera.

^they have a location around osu now and its pretty urban although it is in Gateway (faux urban) etc and they also have one in grandview.....urban but not a lot of crime.  i dunno.

I hope that Panera doesn't look at Atlanta Bread Company's closing as a sign not to go downtown.  Panera in general has better food, and I've heard many downtown workers and residents comment that they would love a Panera.

i have heard they are actually much worse in philly

Like hell.  I've yet to find a cheesesteak as good as Penn Station IN Philadelphia and I've been to atleast 10 different shops.  I will say the best Philly cheesesteaks IN Philadelphia are street vendors.

Hmm.  So which is the standard in POhiladelphia?  Cheeze Whiz or prvolone?  I know Jim's on South street uses Cheeze Whiz, but I thought the standard was Provolone.

Photos: 2nd crash in week

For the second time in a week, a car crashed on Wednesday into Washington Platform Saloon and Restaurant at Elm and Court streets. When Cincinnati police called owner Jon Diebold about the accident, he said he thought it was a joke. “I’m in complete befuddlement,” said Diebold, 44, of Westwood. “I don’t know what to think.”

^I really don't understand how its possible!!!  There are barriers up and everything; so this person must have drove right through them without noticing a thing!!!  What the hell is wrong with people?!?!

What the hell is wrong with people?!?!

They don't have light rail and street cars (or reliable bus service for that matter) for people to use that don't know how to drive?

^ If a guy can't navigate this intersection, he probably won't be able to use mass transi.

Wonder if Mr Diebold has heard any jokes about opening a drive thru ?

Damn, I really like this place too.  I hope it reopens.

The great building may very well be doomed, it sounds like the business would like to reopen but I think it will have to be in a new spot.  The bldg was already in bad shape...then BAM two cars drive into the damn thing!  It sounds like a Queen City Barrel job all over again.

[/conspiracy]

I think the style of the sandwich is different, for example the cheese whiz/ provolone difference.

Well, half of the restaurants in Philadelphia either use wiz/no wiz and the rest use provolone.  So really, it depends where you go.  The more popular places use wiz/no wiz; with/without (onions).

Apparently, the first joke about it was his.  According to the Post article, there was a sign on the building after the first crash that said "temporarily closed due to structural damage associated with our new drive thru."

Mythos piles on new locations to serve downtown

Lines at lunch inspire owners

DOWNTOWN - When it comes to making a go of it downtown, it appears that the gyro has legs.

The downtown Greek eatery Mythos, which opened on Walnut Street three years ago, is adding a second downtown location on Vine Street and finalizing a lease on a third in the Chiquita Center. They will join a fourth in Newport, opened by restaurateur George Psihountakis and his brothers in 2005.

Click on link above for article.

That's fantastic news.  There's a dearth of gyro/greek/mediterranean restaurants in this city and Mythos is pretty good.

"Sitwell's Coffeehouse faces an unclear future"

City Beat May 20, 2007

By C.A. MacConnell

Even in the pre-rush, quiet morning hours, Lisa Storie, Sitwell's Coffeehouse owner, works feverishly, darting behind the shop counter, making drinks, sliding cookies into the oven. She worries about getting the homemade soup made. Outside, she puts out iron-black tables and chairs for smokers, even though it's raining. She makes quite a racket.

Storie jokes with customers about Quentin Tarantino's mental state and new film, Grindhouse, but aside from normal business and lighthearted chatter, there's concern lurking behind her blue eyes. A Clifton dweller and store owner since the '90s, Storie faces difficult decisions ahead involving the renewal of Sitwell's lease.

No link available for article.

^ That article I think is extremely well written and captures the heart of a place like a local coffeehouse. I love sitwells and It would really be a shame to see it go. In my opinion There is nothing like a chai there in the winter or after a movie at the Esquire.

Trattoria Roma expands Downtown

By Nicole Hamilton

DOWNTOWN Family tradition is important to Sal Aracri, who owns Trattoria Roma restaurant on Walnut Street.

The Aracri family recipes have been passed down for generations, from the time Sal's father owned a restaurant in Calabria, Italy. They are the same recipes Sal uses today in the dishes he serves at Trattoria Roma.

When Sal's brother, Quentino, who owned the restaurant, became ill and needed a liver transplant in 2003, Sal closed up his pizzeria

in Dayton and moved to Cincinnati so he could help his ailing brother and his family. He decided to stay to tend to Quentino's restaurant, wife and their three children.

"Trattoria Roma is a tribute to my brother," says Sal. "I want to keep the legacy."

Starting out in 1994 as a small by-the-slice pizzeria called Roma, Trattoria Roma is now a 96-seat homage to Aracri's native Italy. By late May, Sal will add 26 more tables, when he opens an addition next door in what was formerly the Bagel Stop.

The new space will feature large storefront windows, which will allow for natural sunlight to shine through, giving it an open and airy ambiance. While next door, Trattoria Roma is a little darker - quaint, and cozy with wax candles on the checkered table clothes and painted murals on the walls.

Featured on the noon menu are 21 lunch specials all of which are under $10. Sal has also added a few new dinner items, and is considering staying open between lunch and dinner from 2 - 5 p.m. hours the restaurant is currently closed.

Some of the most popular menu items include cioppino, a seafood stew and the New York Strip Steak.

"Everything is made from scratch," says Sal. "I believe our quality is number one."

Three years ago Sal opened a second restaurant, Gondola Pizzeria on Seventh Street, and eventually, he hopes to keep Gondola open until 3 a.m. on weekend nights to accommodate the crowds from nearby bars.

"I'm making changes because there is so much happening now Downtown. I want to accommodate," says Aracri.

Trattoria Roma is a popular dining spot on nights the Aronoff Theater has performances. In fact, sometimes Sal has to turn people away they get so busy, so reservations are recommended.

"We serve food that is gourmet, but we are not over-priced and you don't have to be overdressed to dine here," says Sal. "It's homey and comfortable."

Trattoria Roma is located at 609 Walnut St., Downtown. For information call (513) 723-0220.

Gondola Pizza is located at 35 E. Seventh St., Downtown. For information call (513) 721-3520.

Cool down this summer with Below Zero

By Nicole Hamilton

OVER-THE-RHINE From a coat hanger factory to a whisky warehouse chocolate warehouse to dance club for the last century 1122 Walnut St. near Centra1 Parkway in Over-the-Rhine, has been home to a variety of businesses.

Soon it will add a new one to the list vodka bar, when Nigel Cotterill opens his new two-level club, Below Zero, to the public in July.

The club will feature more than 40 types of vodka and the featured vodkas will be chilled at six degrees Fahrenheit. Downstairs, guests will have the option of sipping their cocktails while lounging on plush sofas in one of three lounge areas, or at seats grouped around a baby grand piano. The club will also boast a long bar that will run almost the entire length of the first floor.

"There is just so much going on here," says Nigel Cotterill, a former partner of the Universal Grille on Vine Street.

The Hereford England-native already had the idea for Below Zero solidified earlier this year and was looking for a location when he saw the bar, formerly Alchemize, while on his way home after seeing "Hamlet" at the Know Theatre Tribe.

He knew the vacant building already had a liquor license, and given its close proximity to both Vine Street's new Gateway Quarter and the Main Street entertainment district he knew he had found the perfect location for Below Zero.

The club will be the first in the city to feature a video jukebox that will show the music videos which guests have chosen on five screens positioned throughout the room. The jukebox contains 9,800 video selections.

By September, Cotterill hopes to feature a light menu that will feature tapas and other appetizers such as fruit and cheese plates.

A smaller area upstairs features a small stage and Cotterill will open the space for private parties and some performances. In early June it will serve as one of the Fringe Festival's performance sites. The club's owner already has several private parties booked for events after the club opens its doors.

"It's a great mix of different organizations," says Cotterill of the parties he has already booked. He says the diverse mix should also be reflected in the make up of the guests who will attend Below Zero for drinks downstairs.

There will be something for everyone from piano music on Friday nights, to the various types of seating arrangements. The three small lounge areas create an intimate setting for people who want to have quiet conversation, but there is also a large enough space to walk around and mingle.

With the help of ICB Audio, Cottrell has installed small speakers around the room which can be adjusted to suit the needs of groups who prefer a quieter setting.

The former machine industry executive has traveled extensively over the years, and garnered many ideas for Below Zero from similar clubs he visited all over the world.

"This is something really unique for Cincinnati," he says.

One of the features at the bar will be small dispensers of chilled vodka from which bartenders will draw single shots perfectly chilled at six degrees Fahrenheit, the proper serving temperature. Having the dispensers means taking the guess work out of trying to determine how cold the vodka is. It also cuts back on the bartender's time needing to shake the vodka until its cold enough to serve.

Vodkas from all over the globe will be featured including one from Ireland.

"Who knew the Irish could make vodka," questions Cotterill. "You can make vodka from anything."

With the help of Northside architect David Devereaux, Cotterill has made some significant changes to the former Alchemize. He changed the location of the women's restroom so it no longer opens out into the bar area.

"Before you could see in at women powdering their noses," says Cotterill shaking his head. The new bathroom will feature tiles made of Italian marble tile.

During the renovation, Cotterill unearthed signs from the days the building served as a chocolate warehouse one which sits in its original door. Eventually, he would like to open a smoking patio in the side ally. The bar will also feature an ATM machine indoors and will offer free Wi-Fi.

Across the street, just 100 steps from Below Zero on Walnut Street is a secured parking lot open from 3 p.m. 3 a.m. where patrons can park their car for $2.

"It would be great to make a night of it," says Cotterill. "Visit the Know Theater or a restaurant and then come over to Club Zero for a cocktail."

For more information call Below Zero at (513) 421-ZERO.

And this is also posted in Fountain square thread . . . But I thought I'd post here.

Graeter's to open on Fountain Square

BY POLLY CAMPBELL | [email protected]

Black raspberry chocolate chip, fresh peach and other flavors that Cincinnati can’t seem to live without will once again be available downtown.

Graeter’s ice cream company signs a lease today with Fifth Third Bank for a store on Fountain Square.

It will occupy the glassed-in space that was the Cincinnati Visitor’s Center, close to the corner of Walnut and Fifth Street, and should be dipping ice cream by mid-July. “We are so excited to be coming back downtown,” said Richard A. Graeter, executive vice president of the company. “We’ve been part of this community for 138 years now, and we’ve always been downtown. We’ve got a lot of faith in the revitalization, and we just had to be part of it.”

The store will carry all three product lines: ice cream, candy and pastry. It will also have “a really large outdoor dining area,” said Graeter.

There was a Graeter’s on Fourth Street until it closed late in 2005. Graeter said that location did well until the buses stopped going to the nearby Dixie Terminal. The new location, on Fountain Square and near the bus stop at Government Square, has more room and more visibility, said Graeter. “Our core customers are Cincinnati folks, but now if out-of-towners have heard of us, they’ll be able to find us.”

This is the 13th Graeter’s in Greater Cincinnati; there are also 24 franchised stores in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana.

The store will open in mid-July and be open daily until 9 p.m.; 8 p.m. on Sundays through the summer.

Graeters isn't as good as Ben and Jerrys but at least it's cheaper. They also don't put terrible art on the walls from people that don't know how to make ellipses!

^^The news about Roma is good, but it would be nice if they stayed open late on non-theatre event nights as well.  They got pissy with me when I tried to go when they were closing down after the lunch rush at like 3ish.  It's good to hear that businesses are noticing positive changes downtown, and are trying to make changes to accommodate more people!
