Drove past Vinyl tonight and it was completely dark. And the funky little stools that sat in the entry and outside seemed to be stacked against the window in some odd fashion. I'm foolishly hopeful that it will reopen.

My understanding is that the people from Vinyl have an interest in Mixx, but do not control 100% of the operations by any stretch.

I though the people from vinyl where opening jardin

I called Vinyl's phone number yesterday and a recording says that are not taking dinner reservations at this time only special events and parties.

I was thinking the same thing. If they can't keep one restaurant alive, I don't have much faith in their success in multiple ventures. I love their concepts, but I'm apparently in the minority. The young people of this city obviously prefer their chain restaurants/bars.

The reason I haven't been to Vinyl is because of the $$$. It is out of my price range...if they offered a more affordable product, then I'm sure more young people would come.

tuesday is half price burgers and beer I had 3 mini burgers, a side and 2 pbrs for $6.37

That's because no one eats on tuesday! I didn't make crap yesterday.

From the Enquirer today:

Something is fishy with Greater Cincinnati sushi.

“Inside Edition” found five area restaurants serving cheaper tilapia as sushi, instead of the expensive Japanese red snapper as claimed, says producer Larry Posner from the syndicated show.

The hidden-camera investigation, to air Monday, found fraudulent fish at Benihana downtown, Beluga in Hyde Park; Dancing Wasabi in Mount Lookout; Kyoto Japanese Cuisine in Symmes Township; and Tokyo Japanese Restaurant in Sharonville.

Posner collected sushi samples while eating at the popular restaurants in late summer, then took them to a New York laboratory for DNA testing.

Seems a bit extreme.

^If I had the means, I'd do it too, out of spite. I'm a scorpio.

I'd do DNA testing on Skyline chili and find out what the meat is. I guess it doesn't matter. Seasoned hot dog sauce is seasoned hot dog sauce no matter where the meat (chili or hot dog) came from.

That's a great investigative report...and really DNA testing like that is not very expensive...

I hope this makes sushi restaurants take notice, and not try to pull scams like this...and if it really was their suppliers, doing this on a large scale, we're talking some serious fraud...

Buddakhan, 713 Vine opened this week. Menu looks like Thai, wraps and salads.

Hours: Mon-Sat 4pm to 2:30 am; Sat-Sun 11am - 2:30 pm

Looking to be more of a bar than a restaurant like it was before.

4 Encore Cafes here close

BY STEPFANIE ROMINE | [email protected]

The four local Encore Bistro and Bar restaurants have closed.

The restaurants – in Wyoming, West Chester Township, Deerfield Township and Springboro – closed Saturday night, according to spokeswoman Carrie Cavanaugh. She couldn’t comment on the closing, and no details were available on gift card redemption.

Hmm.

So why don't we have a sensationalized headline that reads "Suburbs in Rapid Decline: 4 Encore Cafes Close!".

It only seems fair after all the doom and gloom headlines we get whenever a downtown restaurant closes.

AMEN brother!

A compare and contrast could be made between Paul Sturkey and Jean Robert. One chose the suburban route, the other chose the urban route. Which has been more successfull?

jean robert

Umm well yeah, Jean Robert is a LOCAL CELEBRITY. I have no doubt that if Jean Robert opened an upscale bistro in Kenwood, it would bring in fantastic sales.

But Paul Sturkey was a celebrity at J's and on radio before Jean Robert event came to the Maisonette. I think his stardom partially comes from his belief in the city. Same with Jeff Ruby.

^ Agree.

Jean Robert had Pho Paris. It closed, n'est-ce pas? Not everything he touches turns to gold. Although, almost everything does. Pigall's is nearly the best restaurant I've ever been to. I'm eagerly looking forward to his OTR openings.

Pho Paris is closed? I thought they just moved to Covington?

OK. That must have happened during my 9 month media blackout. I noticed that it was gone and a new place instead. I stand corrected. Everything he does turns to gold.

You scared me for a second! :)

Yeah, Pho Paris is alive, well, and serving extremely tasty food! And while part of the reason for the move is surely that he thought it wasn't doing the business that it could, another part of the reason is that everything else he has is clustered right around downtown - but Pho Paris was eight miles away. It really became either the red-headed stepchild that got neglected, or it was the Lost Sheep that kept him away from all the other places...

Students open OTR lounge

BY STEPFANIE ROMINE | [email protected]

Cue, a lounge and pool bar owned by two Miami University students, opens tonight in Over-the-Rhine.

Cue - in the former RBC at 1142 Main St. - is half of the conjoined bar and club owned by Joe Gilster and Mark Fogarty.

With 16 draft beers and an extensive martini menu, a dance floor and two pool tables, the lounge is a bar with a club feel, the owners say.

"Cue has more meaning than just pool," said Gilster. "Cue as in cuing action, cuing energy."

Jean Robert's TWIST Lounge is opening 27 November 2007. I received the following via email today.

Introducing Twist Lounge at Pigall’s

Downtown Cincinnati nightlife welcomes an exciting new hot spot this winter. Twist Lounge at Pigall’s will open November 27th on West Fourth Street. The new bar will feature live music, a champagne and cocktail bar and a limited menu from early evening to late-night. The contemporary lounge is the perfect place to wind down or treat yourself to a night out on the town, any day of the week. Stop on by after the 27th for a little holiday bubbly and experience the new Twist Lounge at Pigall’s. For more information, call 513.721.1345.

I was at Via Vite on Friday, Delicious Food, everything was prepared very well. The Staff was slightly annoying with how many times they interrupted to ask about water, or drinks. just leave us be! overall though, one of my top ten dining experiences in Cincinnati.

3 short reviews:

Via Vite - Went there a couple of weeks ago. Great service, great interior, nice upbeat atmosphere and music. While the food was good, the only thing that really stood out was the potato leek soup. Pastas, while cooked well, were slightly uninspired. I look forward to going back and trying other things on the menu, particularly when the weather warms up again.

Seny - Good atmosphere, I like the interior aside from the carpet. The owner came to the table to get our opinions on the place, which always earns extra points with me. Otherwise, service was very middle of the road. While there was great variety in the menu (traditional and creative tapas, several entrees), the execution just wasn't really there. Having recently returned from Spain, we were very interested in the restaurant. I wanted to love it, but I unfortunately didn't. The highlight of the meal was a carpaccio, but the shared entree of trout with prosciutto was without question the saltiest thing I've ever had. As long as they continue to attract new customers, I think they could iron out these problems and become a great restaurant.

Amarin (Erie Ave, East Hyde Park) - Wow, complete and utter letdown. Having driven by the restaurant in the space formerly occupied by Cafe de Paris, I noticed that the lighting and interior looked pretty impressive. While they claim to be "fusion," it was just another Thai/sushi joint with nothing to make it stand out from the already overcrowded sushi scene on the East Side (at least 10 restaurants that I can think of). No creative combinations of different cuisines whatsoever. My wife had a tofu curry dish that wasn't spicy as it should be, and I had sushi which wasn't that bad. If we knew what the menu was before going (having never been to the original in Madiera), we wouldn't have been disappointed. But then again, if we wanted Thai and sushi, we'd go to Bangkok Bistro 3 doors down. If we wanted a modern, sleek atmosphere, we'd go to Cumin right next door. Amarin doesn't offer anything new to the area.

I had the pleasure of checking out Twist today ...

Unbelievable! This place is going to be one of the regions best night spots. The design and colors chosen couldn't have been better. The bar is enormous. One thing that I like the best are the arches from the wall to the ceiling and the way the lounge stretches long-wards from front to back. One thing that I would do differently thought would be to have hardwood floors versus the carpet.

I give it 2 thumbs up though.

So I went to three bars I had never been to on Saturday: Mac's Pizza Pub, The Comet, & The Gypsy Hut. The Comet was smaller than I thought it would be but basically a dive like most other bars just with live music. The Gypsy Hut had this total strangeness to it but a cool vibe. I don't think I was hip enough to be there. The walls are just like barren and small rooms lead to other rooms and two levels of outdoor patios and decks. I ended the night by drinking on the roof and chatting with a friend and freezing our butts off. Weird.

I'm not really sure my question belongs here but I'm not sure where else and I don't think it's worthy of its own thread, so if it needs to be moved please do so.

I'm a native Cincinnatian but have been living in Cbus for the past four years. My girlfriend and I are celebrating an anniversary this Saturday and we plan on spending the day in downtown Cincinnati. I've read some information on the holiday events and my plan is to walk around, stop in to some of the attractions like the CGE train display, take one of the free carriage rides, and enjoy some of the activities going on at the Fountain. However, I need a good place to take her out to dinner (and not totally break the bank as the pockets aren't too deep :-D) I'm thinking Nicholson's across from the Aronoff. Never been there, would this be a good spot? Any other suggestions? Any other advice on some of the activities going on this Saturday? I love downtown Cincinnati and get back as often as I can and hope this can be a special night. Thanks for your help..

Jean Ro Bistro is what I would recomend for dinner, Entrees 18-26, a little less expensive is sung korean bistro, 13-20

Nicholson's is good; much more casual than say Jean Ro Bistro. That said Nicholson's can still be nice. McCormick & Schmick's might not be too bad either in terms of price.

Its funny, by definition, a bistro is informal but look at JeanRo. Even Via Vite is a bistro but its not informal or small. The word bistro comes in handy though when a restaurant makes mistakes... If a restaurant is fast paced, people are more accepting of mistakes or imperfections.

Arnold's Bar & Grill is a cool spot downtown that won't break the bank (most entrees around $10) and although I've never eaten there, I've looked at Trattoria Roma's menu a few times (next to Nicholson's) and it seems pretty reasonable ($15-$26).

The descriptions below are from the Downtown Cincinnati Inc. website which has a lot of good info...http://www.gototown.com/

Arnold's Bar & Grill

Cincinnati's longest continuously operating bar and grill, dating back to 1865. Eclectic Mediterranean and traditional American cuisine. Year-round courtyard features music on Friday and Saturday evenings. Lots of characters and good conversation. Free parking after 5pm on Crow.

Scotti's has a really cool atmosphere

I just walked by the new site for Mytho's Grecian Grill (corner of 4th and Walnut in the old Atlanta Bread Company space), and the sign said that they open tomorrow.

Anyone else going to Twist tonight?

Is tonight the first night they're open?

I'm planning on Twisting tonight.

Looks like I may have the chance to visit Nada this Thursday night! I'm pumped about that.

This place has so much potential if they play the right cards.

For some reason I can not remember what Twist is...can someone let me know?

Jean Robert's new lounge on 4th right next to Pigalls.

I didn't hear anything about an opening, but I did see about 15-20 people in there tonight when I walked by. From what I could see, the interior looked great.
