Grammer's opens tommorrow (thursday).

Sounds like it will be a photo finish with the contractors (as it always is in a restaurant/bar opening)

I just saw that Jean Robert at Pigalls was rated one of America's top 11 restaurants by AOL!

Zagat rated it number 11 in their most recent guide.  I assume AOL is licensing the Zagat results.

Grammer's reopens Thursday

BY STEPFANIE ROMINE | [email protected]

Grammer’s, the historic German restaurant in Over-the-Rhine, reopens Thursday as a bar, said owner Martin Wade.

He and wife Marilyn Wade bought the building, at 1442 Walnut St., from former Cincinnati vice-mayor Jim Tarbell in September.

See link above for article.

I'll be at Grammers at about 6:00pm Today.... Lavomatic last night, Grammer's tonight. . . .what could make this week any better.

Next week is restaurant week!  Go to this link for more details: http://www.gcindependents.com/restaurants.php

Click on the "RW" next to the restaurants for their menus next week.

Wow...thanks for the correction...next week will be amazing. . . i am going to try Pigall's for the first time, as well as possibly Chalk + Wine. . . who knows for 25 bucks i might try them all!

I went to Pigall's last year for the first time during restaurant week and was blown away by the service, quality of food, and atmosphere.  I did go to Daveed's during restaurant last year for the first time and was NOT impressed.  We did not get the service expected I think because we ordered off the set price menu.  The portions were tiny, and I think we stopped at UDF afterwards to get some real food.  Another place I want to try next week is Primavista since I have never been there before.  Dilly Deli's  and Kona Bistro's menu looked good too I thought. Anyone else planning on checking out Restaurant Week?  If you do, report back!

LOL!!

have been to Chalk twice since opening (second time for my son's 9th birthday) and the food has been very good, with only a few kind-of-misses.  Service, however, has somewhat been spotty and still in shakedown/training mode.

Very interested in hearing reviews/experiences re Lavomatic.

Went to Lavo last night and was thoroughly impressed with the food (the rabbit was fantastic).  Service wasn't as attentive as say Jean-Ro, but after a couple glasses of wine, I didn't seem to care as much.

you ate thumper.

Went to grammers, the beer is ridiculously over priced on draft, but the atmosphere is great.

advice: cut draft prices and/or add hudy delight for cheap

bambi's next.

grammer's looked great...can't comment on the beer price as someone else paid for it.  There were a lot of folks reminiscing about old times, as well as, I suspect, others (like myself) who had never been inside.  They didn't have the rathskellar quite finished yet but it looks great.  I suspect they won't need to have all the various rooms open....(for example the upstairs back room and the room directly below it).  there is a lot of space.

how large was the crowd?  good showing?

I was at Grammers from about 10:00 to 11:30.  Yeah, two drafts of the Moerlein was $9.00.  It was quite busy when we got there but thinned out as the night went on. I overheard the Rathskeller is just a couple of weeks off from coming online.  It is a big place so I agree that all the space may not be needed but when we first got there the whole first floor felt full. I thought there was a lot of older folks who were reminiscing, etc. - more than I imagined.  We even heard "Ein Prosit der Gemütlichkeit" from one table.  Prost!

^

$4.50 for a draft sounds expensive to me. It would be great if they charged $4.50 for all domestics, and charged like $2.50 for all the locals like Moerlein and Hudy. Just a thought.

the 24 oz OTR ale was $7.50

but still, 7.5 for a beer.  That is as expensive as a Reds/Bengals Game!

^7.50 is more expensive than a Reds/Bengals game

Let's not get carried away.....they have two sizes, the pint and the larger 24 oz., the latter of which is 7.50.  It's a hefty sized beer.

I'm just saying, for a bar that price is way too steep!  :-D :drunk:

I've been meaning to ask this, but have prices gone up all over the city? I only get home every so often, but i went home a couple of weeks ago and went to O'Mally's and it was like $3.75 for an OTR. Over the summer i remember it only being like $2.50. I also went to Madonnnas and i think it was like $4.00. If these prices continue to jump up like this I'm not going to be able to afford drinking :(

^

All beers have been going up due to the hops shortage.

Biofuels, seriously.

^

I guess i did read about hop and never put two and two together, but raising it $1.75 at a bar like O'Mally in the Alley seems excessive to me. Maybe I'm just young and naive, or maybe money wasnt as tight over the summer! Even if Grammars has the most expensive beer in the Natti its not going to stop me from checking it out. I probably just will never become a regular.

We went to Grammer's last night with some friends.  Our pints were around $3.50 each.

fromm msnbc.com:

Beer makers have been forced to raise their prices because of the skyrocketing price of hops – one of the principle ingredients. The price of hops has gone from about $4 a pound in September to $40 a pound. The price of barley, beer’s other main ingredient, has nearly doubled.

in other news...Lavomatic was packed last night, but had a much more neighborhood feel than other JR restaurants.  We had a very nice salad to start and shared the mini-pot of cauliflower soup (excellent)...both entrees, the rabbit and the pork shank, were equally excellent. very casual...fun crowd.  Cozy space....a few tables were put into use upstairs as well. The rooftop will be a great spot in warm weather....also, the view from the restaurant windows is nice because you see the lit-up windows of the art academy.

My hubby and I went to Mythos last friday night for DINNER.  We were happy to have someplace new to go downtown within walking distance that didn't have a wait.  This was my first time dining at any of the Mythos restaurants and I have to admit I was blown away by how good the food was.  I went the safe route, and ordered the gyro.  The thing was stuffed with the most tender lamb I have ever had.  My hubby had the baked macaroni with ground lamb or something, and it too was delicious.  We topped off the meal with the baklava.  I admitted as we were leaving that I was in a food coma and definitely have found my new favorite downtown eatery.  So glad they have late hours!

Ummm yeah, we went back again tonight.  It was again some awesome food.  The crowd was really slim though that makes me worried.  We got there about 7:30 and there were only 3 other tables with people.  A few came in and ordered takeout but I am worried they are not getting enough business.....SO if you go out downtown and Lavomatic or Grammer's have too long of a wait because it is new, come support Mythos...I would hate to see it go back to just lunch hours.

I got two words-- "liquor license."

They said they were in the process of securing it.  Yep, a nice class of wine would have been nice with the meal.  Good call...

Went to Nicola's lat night. really great place.  Afterwards, though, I was giving my wife a tour of OTR and the Vine st area.  When we drove to Main Street,t hough, Cue was absolutely empty. I'm talking totally empty. This was 9:30. How is it doing?

Can't you bring your own bottle to places like this?

When I asked if they served beer or wine and the waitress told me that the liquor license was being pursued, she didn't mention a BYOB option.....you would have thought if it was an option, she would have told me right?  She was young though, those little rugrats!

I overheard the Rathskeller is just a couple of weeks off from coming online.

Pardon my ignorance, but what is the "Rathskeller"?

The bar in the basement. Used to be under the rathaus (city hall) in most German cities.

^Notice how "rat"haus translates to city hall

Rats = Politicians....haha

^Well played.  Though Rathaus would seem to translate as something "council building", rat (council) probably having the same origin as the word "ratify" (also note that the upper house of the German legislature is called the Bundesrat, and is typically translated as "Federal Council", but is probably more literally translated as "Council of Union"):

Main Entry: rat·i·fy

Pronunciation: \ˈra-tə-ˌfī\

Function: transitive verb

Inflected Form(s):

    rat·i·fied; rat·i·fy·ing

Etymology: Middle English ratifien, from Anglo-French ratifier, from Medieval Latin ratificare, from Latin ratus determined, from past participle of reri to calculate — more at reason

Date: 14th century

: to approve and sanction formally : confirm <ratify a treaty>

Seeing how this term arose in the 14th Century (the 1300s) which coincides with the re-emergence of cities in Western Christendom and the beginning of corporate and municipal law through city charters: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L%C3%BCbeck_law

Compare this to the definition for Rat, a noun:

Main Entry: rat1

Pronunciation:\ˈrat\

Function: noun

Etymology: Middle English, from Old English ræt; akin to Old High German ratta rat and perhaps to Latin rodere to gnaw — more at rodent

Date: before 12th century

1 a: any of numerous rodents (Rattus and related genera) differing from the related mice especially by considerably larger size b: any of various similar rodents 2: a contemptible person: as a: one who betrays or deserts friends or associates b: scab 3b c: informer 2 3: a pad over which a woman's hair is arranged 4: a person who spends much time in a specified place <a mall rat>

Though the rat in Rathaus seems to have nothing to do with alternate verbs related to speech (though I was hoping it might):

Main Entry: rap5

Function:intransitive verb

Inflected Form(s):

    rapped; rap·ping

Etymology: perhaps from rap1

Date:1929

1: to talk freely and frankly 2: to perform rap music

^All this was very fun for me.

I was there last night. It's "online" and ready to go.

I was at Grammers last night as well and the Rathskeller was AWESOME looking!  Def. worth checking out some time.

I was at Grammers on Tuesday and received the full tour. If you go into the back room, down the stairs and to the back of that room there is a door (it is locked) that leads through a basement and to a set of steps that leads you throughout the entire building.  It looks like old, abandoned apartments upstairs.  There are several bathtubs sitting around but otherwise very empty.  Grammers is so much bigger than you would think.

We intended to go to Lavomatic yesterday, but they closed because of snow. Instead we had $8 beer at Grammers and then relatively cheap eats at Nada.  Very nice to be able to walk to such nice places when all the suburbs are snowed-in.

http://www.western-star.com/search/content/oh/story/news/local/2008/03/03/ws030608wildbills.html

Wild Bill's, a Lebanon eatery and venue for local music, closed its doors for the final time Saturday night after five years of operation.

Co-owner Gail Schroeder attributed the closing to a lack of customers, which she blamed in part on the smoking ban in bars and restaurants enacted in late 2005.

...

Wild Bill's had closed for several months in early 2006, but reopened, said Schroeder, because of pleas from people in the community. Schroeder operated the restaurant with her husband, Bill.

...

Schroeder said this time Wild Bill's is closed for good.

^

Thats really a shame. Wild Bill's was a nice authentic restaurant

/

When I think of "Wild Bill's", I think of Wild Mike's. Certainly doesn't sound like authentic Lebanese, even it was.

also it was in the middle of nowhere
