Fine dining has its place and I will miss Pigall's.  I was fortunate to eat there this summer on our anniversary and it was the best dining experience I have ever had.  While our approx. $280 was crazy expensive, it was worth it for this occasion.  We did go overboard with the seven course meal including dessert and champagne but it was a memorable evening and we didn't want to cut back like we typically do.

I think the Grand Finale in Glendale is the best bang for the buck for a quasi upscale dining experience with amazing steaks dinners in the low to mid $20's.

Grand Finale is very good, and it's just such a comfortable dining experience.  I guess Cincy's most upscale dining is now...Boca? Daveeds?  Also the Palm Court and the restuarant in the Cincinnatian Hotel are fairly upscale.  I do really want a truely fine dining restaurant to come back to Cincinnati.  This city has a tradition of fine dining, and I think we deserve a fine dining restaurant.

New Maury’s Tiny Cove owner plots its future, respects its past

http://cincinnati.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/stories/2009/02/16/story7.html

Maury’s Tiny Cove, a staple of Cheviot nightlife since 1949, has changed hands for just the second time in 60 years.

Matt Huesman took over the Harrison Avenue steakhouse from former owner-manager Paul Yamaguchi in January.

See link for article.

^Yup, I happened to stop by earlier in the day, picking up a cupcake on my way to the bus stop.

The open-house party will take place from 6pm to 10pm.  It's recommend that attendees arrive earlier to ensure that they get their hands on some delicious grub.

Is Graemmers still open and what are the hours?  I want to take my partner there!

They are currently open only on Friday and Saturday evenings.  I think the summer might bring expanded hours, as they are planning a beer garden outside.

That is a GREAT idea! I'd like to see an enormous amount of green.

Nearby news - the Little River Cafe in Oregonia burned Friday morning:

http://www.daytondailynews.com/n/content/oh/story/news/local/2009/02/13/ws021309fire.html?imw=Y

I drove by this afternoon and checked it out. The roof has big gaping holes. I don't doubt that it's now a tear down.

According to the article above, the lot is too close to the river to build on. I think that some entrepreneur should erect a shelter and picnic style seating and truck in barbecue. My wife and I once went to am "open air" barbecue place near Natural Bridge in KY that some kids were running - it was a restaurant that was closed for repairs but it had outdoor seating and shelters and it was in a natural valley. It was one of the most memorable places that we have ever eaten. Anyway, that location lends itself to something like that, assuming that it can't be rebuilt.

Great news about Take the Cake.  Northside is really becoming a trendy and cool neighborhood, and is really losing a lot of the criminal element that bothered the area in years past.

^I wonder what a streetcar would do for the neighborhood one day.

^I dream of the day when I can take a streetcar from the Banks, to a cafe in OTR, up to a movie at the Esquire on Ludlow, and then dinner at Slims.  One day...

Mason restaurant certified organic

By Polly Campbell, Cincinnati Enquirer, February 17, 2009

Antoniela Miranda hears it a lot: “You’re crazy, Antoniela!” Every time she insists on doing things her way for her restaurant, Basilico – keeping every one of her ingredients organic, baking her own bread, finding the best organic pecorino from Italy – someone tells her she’s out of her mind.

The restaurants on Cincinnati's West Side are not - how do I say this? - consistently fertile ground for culinary creativity.

I wish they would have done something like this MUCH closer to Downtown.  There's no way I'd ever be able to get up to Mason on a bike or bus.

They lost me as a customer before they ever had me.

Anyone been to Washington Platform? I've been past it a lot but never gone in

^

It's actually really good and has a good atmosphere. ONe of the most under rated places downtown in my opinion

There was a large poster put up in my building's lobby (Emery), and I've been craving to check it out. Next Friday.

Anyone been to Washington Platform? I've been past it a lot but never gone in.

I've been twice and enjoyed it both times. Lots of City workers go there for lunch, so if you're in the mood for some eavesdropping then it might be the spot to hit up. But seriously, you should give it a try. Great atmosphere, good food and it's been hit by cars multiple times and is still standing.

I also kind of wondered how it stayed in business where it is, but city employees pretty much explains it.

Hey I apoligize if this has been covered, but i'm looking for a reasonably priced place to get sushi.  The closer to downtown the better.  I've been to Beluga but I thought it was pretty expensive, even on half proce night.

I appreciate any help.

Also, is Wash Platform still cash only?  Thats really the only reason I've never randomly wandered in.

bootys on walnut serves sushi I believe.  Also, try Mixx on Main in OTR.  I think they do too.

had a horrible experience at bootsys...i felt like i was eating at lodge bar...that place needs to get it's atmosphere straightened out before I go back.  Maybe I just dont like eating at a club and watching girls fall over onto my table

Also, is Wash Platform still cash only?  Thats really the only reason I've never randomly wandered in.

The two times I've gone recently I have paid with credit card.

There is also Ko Sho on 9th Street for sushi.

I've been wondering if ko-sho was any good and if it was pricey.  Have you been?

I used to go to Ko Sho, need to go check it out again. It was the first sushi in cincinnati aside from what had been a restaurant in Montgomery called Charlie's Crab. The owner of Ko Sho was their sushi chef and opened Ko-sho. It was a no frills Japanese-Sushi restaurant that let the food speak for itself- very unassuming. Definitely over priced and over hyped in Hyde Park. Another great choice for sushi definitely roll oriented not as much for sashimi is the Green Papaya on Wasson. Their Thai Chef/Owner from my stand point has the best authentic, freshest vegies., best interpretation in the city but oh yeah.. very good sushi, too.

Also, is Lucy Blue moving from Walnut/12th into downtown or maintaining both locations?

I can't wait until that bagel joint opens up! I love me some bagels!

Does anyone know anything about the status of Boss Cox or the place going into the space to the right of Bootsy's?

FYI, KoSho is preparing to move to Northside. Hopefully another rumored downtown sushi place moves in.

Boss Cox got delayed a bit when one of the owners joined the group opening the Rookwood Restaurant in Mt. Adams. Hopefully they already lined up the financing to finish Boss Cox.

What is going in at the former poison room?

Boss Cox is dead per Polly Campbell...

Do you remember hearing about Boss Cox, which was to be a restaurant on far west 4th street?

It is no longer to be. Patrick McBride, who owns the building, told me that the investors pulled out of project. A lot of work has been done on the space, so it may become a restaurant yet, but plans are up in the air.

It was just a couple of weeks ago that Jimmy Gibson, former corporate chef for Jeff Ruby restaurants, told me he'd signed up to be a co-executive chef at the restaurant (with Jonathan Mouch.) He, however, is now doing restaurant consulting with his own company, and says he's got lots of interesting projects coming up.

The group that was doing Boss Cox ended up taking over the Rookwood Restaurant in Mount Adams, and that's still doing OK. Or as OK as any restaurant is doing in these lean times.

^I was afraid this would be the case. It was taking so long, and there was virtually no media attention about it.

Here is the wine dinner menu for March 10, 2009 reservations can be made from 6-9 p.m. there is limited availability.

Mainstay is also the walmart brand of housewares...horrible name.

Does anyone know if Lucy Blue is maintaining its OTR location or moving their operating to the place on 7th?

I just wanted to post and say I spent a brief weekend in Cincy and finally got to try Jean-Ro, went for lunch on Saturday.  It was fabulous, and I have to say, very reasonably priced for lunch.  Afterwards I tried the famous Graeter's ice cream for the first time.  Eh, I didn't get what the big deal was.  It was good but no better than any other ice cream I've had I guess.

^Thank goodness Cincinnati is finally getting Five Guys.  Their burgers are great and their fries are even better.  Terrible for your health, but I couldn't think of a better first location for them than Calhoun Street.

YES!

Actually, there is a location closer: Huntington, West Virginia at Pullman Square in downtown. I absolutely LOVE their food.
