I am hearing rumors that Hamburger Mary's is coming back to Cincinnati, but I don't know where they are locating. Any ideas?

I sure hope they open it downtown, and there is a need for another casual restaurant like that.  They seemed to do a good business and continued after they became Universal Grille.  After UG went upscale is when people started going there less.

Wine me, dine me is reporting that they are indeed opening in their former location at 900 Vine Street in downtown Cincinnati.  WMDM is also reporting that they'll be opening sometime this summer.

How about open that spot up to the public?  I would love to eat above Fountain Square and enjoy the views of Downtown Cincinnati.

^You can at Palominos.

That is nothing compared to the view from the Banker's Club.

^My apologies, I didn't know exactly where the Bankers Club was.  That would be awesome as a restaurant.  The closest thing Cincy currently has is the restaurant in the top of the Millenium Hotel, though I don't even know if that is still open?

Taking the pizza discussion from NYC to the midwest...I ate at Chi-natti's Pizza last weekend, it's the new Chicago style pizza place in old Jalapeno's building near Kenwood mall.  Let me preface this by saying I don't love chicago style deep dish pizza, but every once in a while when I'm there and I go to Lou Malnati's or Geno's East it's a treat.

So I will save you 30 minutes and $20; their Chicago deep dish pizza was the worst I've had.  It has a dry and flavorless cornmeal crust and the pizza itself was hardly thicker than a Papa John's slice.  Mio's deep dish is significantly better if you need to get a Chicago style pizza fix in Cincinnati.  Aside from the deep dish disaster, the restaurant and bar area were very nice and their thin crust pizzas actually looked pretty good.  They also have Chicago Dogs and Italian Beef which I will go back to try.

That building is one of those curses restaurant spaces.  I think it was intially a ground round.

I don't think I've ever had a good "Chicago-style" pizza outside of Chicago. Even the nationwide Uno's franchises generally suck. (The original Pizzeria Uno on Wabash is a separate entity from the chain, and is very good.)

I had someone who was born and raised in Chicago tell me yesterday that Chi-nati's Pizza was the best Chicago-style pizza he has had outside Chicago in his life.

That building is one of those curses restaurant spaces. I think it was intially a ground round.

It was cursed until Jalepenos came in and had a really long run.  They didn't go out of business either, Chi-Nati's bought them out for their restaurant.  I am a little pissed that they did that when there are plenty of other places around Kenwood that they could have gone.  Also, Chi-Nati's is a shitty name.

Review and Update: Tom’s Pot Pies

http://winemedinemecincinnati.com/?p=1168

I talked to Tom of Tom’s Pot Pies yesterday, and he gave me the scoop on his store and the future of the pies.

Tom is no longer renting the space on Vine Street, and is now making his pies in a space at Longworth Hall. Though he no longer offers walk-in service, he will deliver pies anywhere downtown, OTR and Clifton, if you call a day ahead. You can reach him at (513) 235-2400 to order your pies.

Also, he has cemented a partnership with biggs to sell his pies in the deli section.  He delivered the “heat-and-eat” version of the pie to me yesterday, which Terry and I split for dinner.  The pies are in two parts– the bottom, which contains the delicious cream sauce, with a hint of celery seed and cayenne, as well as the vegetables and chicken, and the crust, which is separate, so you can pop it on and not overcook it.

I preheated my oven to 350 and popped the bottom in for about 10-15 minutes.  I stirred, then put the top on, and left it in for another 10 minutes.  It was piping hot, the crust was crispy, and the whole thing was delicious– the vegetables were tender-crisp, which I don’t expect from a reheated pot pie, and the crust (as usual) was terrific– better than your grandma’s.

Once I have a date of introduction at biggs, I’ll pass it on so you can bring some pot pie home for dinner.  Delicious!

so what happened to the Grammer's windows????

Opening of Mike Fink Restaurant Delayed

Local12, June 1, 2009

The long-awaited return of the Mike Fink restaurant is still a long way off. The floating restaurant, that's been closed for 15 months, still has not secured financing for the bulk of the repairs. But as Local 12's Joe Webb tells us, the owner says the boat will reopen and it will reopen in Covington.

No link available for article.

so what happened to the Grammer's windows????

to answer my own question, aparently someone threw a brick or cinder block through the side closest to the bar (left panel if you are facing the building) and grabbed 5 or 6 bottles of booze.

Really too bad.

you're kidding.....that is horrible.....

^

That will be a great addition to the market. He sounds like a guy who might want to be a vocal supporter of the streetcar.

^1801 Race is the vacant building at Elder and Race that used to have the shoe store.  This would be great news.

Evidently Buddakahns has closed down temporarily and has a sign proclaiming "coming soon" on the front door.  Maybe they're taking a similar approach as Bang right now.

On another note, here are two photos I grabbed outside of Hamburger Mary's today...can't wait 'til she's back.

New Pergola Restaurant & Bakery located in historic Ft. Thomas (full article coming in tomorrow's Soapbox).

The patio is enormous and features an outdoor bar that will compliment the live music they'll be having there.

Here's an idea for how large the patio is...

I hope they get new owners or at least a new chef. I had Pad Thai the first week they opened and it was bad...real bad, which is hard to do with Pad Thai. Which is a shame because the old thai place at that location, while a little greasy, was pretty decent.

Looks like Buddakhan's only had a lukewarm rating.

Yeah, I wasn't too fond of the place, but it did make for an excellent late night food stop on the bar hopping rounds.

Isn't that what Shanghai Mama's is for?

PergolaRestaurantBakery_exterior5.jpg

That's huge. When it rains, you have to bring everyone inside along with all of the food. If the outside were packed, there probably wouldn't be room to move everyone inside. Looks like a potential disaster.

Edit: Repaired broken quote.

or they can use their umbrellas.

Umbrellas are more for shade than anything else.  Besides, not all tables have them.

good point, they should probably shut the whole operation down now before the impending disaster

No lol

I just remember working at Indigo and running around trying to bring everyone's stuff inside when it rained. It sucked and the patio was like 1/4th of that size.

Nice to see my hometown of Cake Town getting some love on UO!

I've only been in that space once before, and I remember the indoor dining room being incredibly small. But then, I was only on the ground floor... Is there a larger room upstairs?

The upstairs is larger.  Pergola will be using the lower level as their bakery space, with dining upstairs.

The chef they had when they first opened did not last long.  I think he was there for maybe a couple of months.  He was replaced with a decent Thai cook.

with regard to this.....

By the way, speaking of the Riverfront Park, rumor du jour is that a local restaurant group has the inside track on the restaurant that will be opening there.

replace "local restaurant group" with "the Wades."  That's where things currently stand.

Pergola Restaurant & Bakery bringing fresh and local food concept to Ft. Thomas

http://www.soapboxmedia.com/devnews/0609pergolarestaurant.aspx

Fort Thomas will soon have a new spot to grab coffee, food, live music and an outdoor patio when Pergola Restaurant & Bakery opens on Friday, June 12 and will feature live music from Nick Root and Jesse on Friday and Saturday respectively.

Pergola Restaurant & Bakery boasts an enormous outdoor patio that fronts onto Fort Thomas Avenue and will allow guests to “sit outside, enjoy a coffee or a bit to eat and relax under our Pergola," says executive chef, Jake Krebs.  Guests will also be treated to free WiFi internet access and be treated by the sounds of local musicians on their patio.

The new restaurant hopes to provide customers with fresh food, baked goods and beverages at good prices in a fun and casual environment.  Lunches range from $6 for a linguini dish to $8 for fish tacos or a grilled barbecue duck wrap.  Dinner entrees will range from $11 for prosciutto chicken to $14 to petite lamb chops or a bacon-wrapped fillet.

The restaurant is locally owned by the Krebs family of Fort Thomas and will feature “unique cuisine with a seasonally revolving menu.”  The family is also working with local farmers to provide fresh organic fruits and vegetables.

In addition to the unique restaurant offerings, the new establishment will offer homemade scones, muffins, cookies, cakes and more from the bakery in addition to their coffee and specialty drink offerings.

Pergola will be open Monday through Saturday from 6:30am to 10pm, and Sunday from 8am to 10pm.  There will also be a special late night menu offered every night from 10pm on.

You can reach Pergola Restaurant & Bakery at 15 N. Fort Thomas Avenue, Fort Thomas, Kentucky 41075, or by calling (859) 442-5555.

The restaurant is also looking for additional musicians who are interested in performing at Pergola.  Those interested can email the Kregs family at [email protected].

World Food Bar opening at historic Findlay Market

http://www.soapboxmedia.com/devnews/0609worldfoodbar.aspx

On Tuesday, June 16 World Food Bar will join the Findlay Market collection of vendors.  The carryout and eatery will be open Tuesday through Sunday, 8am to 6pm, and hopes to bring high quality gourmet food at an affordable price to the Cincinnati region.  Prices range from $4.25 for soup to $6.95 for a sandwich.

The eatery will specialize in “serving ethnic and world foods that converge techniques which encompass advanced gastronomic and culinary techniques,"  says the owner and Chef de Cuisine of World Food Bar, Joshua Steven Campbell.

Campbell is a native Cincinnatian and attended the Florida Culinary Institute in West Palm Beach where he was able to serve as Chef de Cuisine at Zagat-rated top restaurant in West Palm Beach for five years.

After a few more career moves, Campbell is finally coming home after most recently serving as the Director of Cuisine for Graycliff in Nassau, Bahamas – the only 5 star restaurant recipient of the Wine Spectator-Grand Award in the entire Caribbean.  During that stint Campbell also became the first chef to bring molecular gastronomy to the Bahamas.

Back in Cincinnati now, Campbell plans to spotlight local and organic ingredients in his daily cooking from the farmers/vendors who frequent Findlay Market.

World Food Bar will serve a variety of box lunches priced at $9.50 that will include a choice of a sandwich, satay or salad; choice of side dish; choice of dessert and a bottle water, thai tea or soda to drink.  The box lunches will be geared towards nearby businesses and also offer take home carryout meals that can be heated for serving in minutes.

The catering element of World Food Bar will begin with a consultation with the Chef to create a personalized menu for corporate events and other parties looking to enjoy Chef Campbell’s world cuisine.  World Food Bar states that they will be able to cater up to 140 guests in a “fashionable, modern way that is unique to the Cincinnati food scene.”

In August World Food Bar will begin their diner’s club which will consist of a multi-course prix fixe mean in an undisclosed location that will only become known the day of the event says Campbell.

  • 2 weeks later...

Went to Five Guys with Sherman today and the place was pretty crowded especially for school being on summer break right now.  I can only imagine the kind of business that will take place when some 40,000 students are back at school.

Couple things I noticed.  1) The restaurant has its service/prep area on the side of the restaurant instead of in the rear like most of the other establishments.  This allows for large windows in the back of the restaurant that not only let in additional light, but also makes people aware of the parking available for the retail establishments behind the building.  2) I had never had the option of cajun fries before, so I jumped on the opportunity when presented - they were very good.

I was on a business trip to Birmingham, Alabama recently and found a Five Guys there.  I was guilty of eating there three times in a week.  And once the rest of the crew that was TDY with me found out, they are made their way to it.  We should be ashamed to eat at a chain in a strip mall but I am guilt free.  Those burgers are delicious.

I went to Bootsy's last week for lunch and loved it. Reasonable price and great vibe. Oh and really good food too.

Cold Turkey

Just noticed the new place on 6th. The most intersting item is the

Friday and Saturday hours.  They are open untill 6:00 am.

Where is it on 6th?

Where is it on 6th?

It's between Main and Walnut. I think it was a Frisch's years ago. More recently, it was the site of the lunch for the first Urban Ohio walking tour of Cincinnati
