not to be confused with the delicious tater tot casserole at mayberry

I did my rather disappointing trip to Mr. Sushi. I'll probably go back and try another dish, but I wasn't impressed at the lack of service and the rather bland food I was given. (And I don't eat sushi, despite me being asian. Hate raw fish. Yuck!)

Yes, there are tater tots on the menu at Lavomatic.

and they're something like 8 bucks....."artisanal" tater tots....

Bless you, Sherman. I am occidental and I hate raw fish. I am so happy to find someone else who isn't going to say,"Sushi is my comfort food." Ughh! Sushi=bait.

Sherman,

Have you ever been to Sung Korean Bistro downtown?

Yeah, I go there every-so-often. This is my first review on my site, and I haven't reviewed it yet for UrbanSpoon (it's been about 6 months since I was last there). I found the food to be better than other Korean restaurants, but it was pricey and you didn't get a lot of sides. At least Sung gives you kimchi! :)

Anyone know of a good sushi place open for lunch on Saturdays? My favorite (Dancing Wasabi) isn't open until 5.  I was going to try Mr. Sushi but it's only open for dinner as well.

I second that Sung is pretty good.  I was spoiled by working in Koreatown in NYC for a year though, Korean became one of my favorite types of food very quickly.

The reason I asked you about Sung is because you mentioned Riverside Korean Bistro in your review, but not Sung which is owned by the same people, but located in the CBD with Mr. Sushi and also located much closer to where you live.  Just found it curious, and thought maybe you hadn't been there.

It seems like it went from being a semi-upscale restaurant to being a neighborhood hangout and faux greasy spoon. The first time I ate there, I had the special which was a rack of lamb, and there were all kinds of desert options. Now, the menu mostly consists of sandwiches, soup, hamburgers, fries, and tater tots. Not that the food is bad or anything... it's just expensive for what it is, and there isn't much on the menu I'm interested in.

Ah, ok, thanks. That is a bit disappointing. I think it would be an acceptable move, if the prices were appropriate (if there's not enough market for the other style, there's not much you can do but switch -- assuming that was their motivation).

Aroma in Kenwood, Wild Ginger in Hyde Park, Green Papaya in Hyde Park, Maki Express in Clifton Hts, Blue Elephant in Hyde Park.  All open for lunch.

Thanks! I don't go out for lunch much, usually just dinner, so I'm always at a loss when it comes to lunch choices.

A new sandwich shop called The Wicked 'Wich is opening at 4th and Sycamore.  It appears they will just be open Monday-Friday, and closing at 3.  Regardless, still a plus to see more businesses opening Downtown!

I believe Maki in Clifton Heights is open on Saturdays for lunch.

I included that in my response.

Oh, sorry.  Didn't see that.

work is being done on Soho Sushi in the former Churchill's space in Tower Place.

Bartini to open in downtown Cincinnati's Backstage Entertainment District

Soapbox, 3/16/2010

The abrupt closing of the Oceanaire Seafood Room at the southeast corner of 6th and Walnut streets has been the only bad news for the Backstage Entertainment District in downtown Cincinnati in recent years.  New residences, nightlife, dining and infrastructure improvements have otherwise been the narrative for this burgeoning district.

http://www.soapboxmedia.com/devnews/0316downtownbartini.aspx

^I hope it's just a rumor that Bartini will be owned by the same group that owns Cadillac Ranch.

There is a sign on the door of the now-closed Javier's that says the following: "Coming soon Taqueria Mercado Mexican Restaurant taqueria mercado.com"

I looked at the website, and most of it is in Spanish.  They already have a location in Fairfield.

I love Taqueria Mercado.  They used to have one on Dixie Highway south of Crestview Town Center that was close enough to my office for lunch.  Now I'm limited to hitting the original maybe once a year on a Jungle Jim's excursion, so hopefully the downtown spot will have weekend hours.  I will say it's a little too authentic for some.

I am very excited about Taqueria Mercado.  The owner has been thinking about expanding donwtown for a while.  I hope it attracts a latino population that for whatever reason seems lacking in Cincy.

^I was downtown today and noticed a lot of Latinos (for Cincinnati) and was kind of impressed.  The Latino community seems to be spread out in various pockets around the region, but I hope their presence continues to grow.

CEO goes from Bigg’s to small by buying Awakenings

Shop’s unique atmosphere relies solely on part-timers

By Lucy May, Business Courier of Cincinnati, March 26, 2010

Pierre Wevers doesn’t think of work in terms of titles, positions or power.

He has had all of that, to be sure. But even during the many years he was CEO of Bigg’s, Wevers took a far more philosophical approach. It’s one he learned during his early years in the grocery business in his native France.

City Barbeque adding fourth Cincinnati location

City Barbeque will open its fourth Cincinnati location – on Glenway Avenue in Western Hills – on April 28, the restaurant chain said.

The restaurant joins three other area City Barbeque locations in Hyde Park, West Chester and Eastgate, according to a news release. The company also will open a site in Florence this year.

I love City BBQ.  If they opened a downtown location I would gain 20 pounds.

Also, I can't mention City BBQ without taking a shot at Montgomery Inn.  I would just like to remind everyone that Montgomery Inn is garbage and an insult to BBQ.

Agreed!

Now, is there a good Memphis-style BBQ joint around Cinci??

A neighbor told me that a McDonalds was going-in downtown, also a 7/11.  Was he pulling my leg?

I think there was a blog post on April 1st (April Fools Day) about that.  I'm highly suspect due to the timing.

I made it to Neon's after the game yesterday. Love the atmosphere and Moe the Bar Dog!

I wonder when Ice Cream Palace at 13th and Walnut will open for the season.  Ice cream sounds good.

Agreed!

man, I think City BBQ is horrible....also, aren't they based out of Columbus?

I'm begining to wonder if she is going to reopen this year..

Uh oh...is there a change that it won't be open this year?  :(

No signs of life when I walked by yesterday, but it didn't look like it wouldn't reopen either

First Impressions: Senate

Originally posted on April 15, but a technical glitch with UrbanSpoon led me to delay it until that issue was corrected.

The word on the street is that the new Senate Restaurant in Cincinnati's Over-the-Rhine is the hip, urban, cool eatery everyone should head to and rave about. Located at 1212 Vine Street across from competitor Lavomatic, the Senate offers American fare -- specializing in hot dogs, and a lengthy drink menu.

The opening of Senate was very much anticipated. Their Facebook page showcased the ongoing renovations of the property for months, and the owners teased followers about the upcoming beer selections and menu items to the point of where I began to ask, "Will the Senate open for 2010?"

Click through to read the remainder, and why I believe that Senate, with its good food, is not the neighborhood joint that I was envisioning, but still a worthwhile addition to Over-the-Rhine.

Ice Cream Palace was open last night.

First visit tonight: Love the location... way too cramped at my table though ... food and drink were good... but 50 bucks for an app, 3 beers, 2 hot dogs, and a fry is ridiculous! Crowd was surprisingly half over 50 w/Aronoff ticket in hand.

Oh, and the Duck Fat Fries were over-rated but the Poutine was fabulous!

What bothers me about Senate is that they advertised it as a "neighborhood hang-out" which implies affordable and casual.  Instead it is fairly expensive and feels a little more formal that it should be.  Other than that, the food and drink selection is good.  But if I want a "hang-out" type of environment, I'll head to Neon's.

If you need an editor, let me know

I want everyone to know that Jack Potts will have their grand opening tonight. They are at the old Jeff Hall location at the corner of 12th and Main. These guys are a bunch of firefighters and all around great people so if you are out tonight, please support them.  This will be a live music venue, just like the old J-Hall was.

Another side note...the Diner is under construction as we speak.

Do you know what was going on last night at 13th and Sycamore? There were a bunch of hipsters out front and music blaring inside. First activity I've seen there in a while.

What's going on there? New restaurant? Club? Bar? Starbucks?

I forget what the name of that place is.  They have events in there all the time.

I will get some more details but it will be a restaurant and I believe it will resemble the old Diner.

That place sounds seriously yummy.

Forgot to mention this last week... Red Squirrel downtown has closed. Not sure why as they were always super busy at lunch...
