This little building on Liberty Street, formerly Teez Cafe, was supposedly one of the first-ever White Castle locations.

Ive never heard anyone say they thought it was a Cincinnati thing. Did someone suggest that here?

Not on UO, but I hear people saying it. It is featured prominently on CincinnatiUSA.com, too, in the "Uniquely Cincinnati USA" section: http://cincinnatiusa.com/diningandshopping/packageresults.asp?DPID=3

Who cares if it was an early expansion area? Not people interested in having unique Cincinnati food.

It's common enough to be a pet peeve of mine. Especially since I don't like White Castle's food.

Corporate rebranding campaigns are fascinating.  White Castle is the next Target.

Northside bar owners' goal: Knit a neighborhood

Some people are inspired to make great art or to help children or to save the planet.

Vanessa Barber and Kim Maurer were inspired by the belief that every decent neighborhood deserves a good bar.

They opened the Mayday in Northside in October 2009. Yes, it is a business. And yes, Barber and Maurer wanted to make money. But really, they opened a bar on a funky stretch of Spring Grove Avenue next to a mechanic’s shop because they live here, and because they knew the people living here need a nice place to gather and drink.

See inside The Banks’ latest restaurant, Ruth’s Chris

RUTH_1.jpg?v=1

Ruth’s Chris Steak House opened its latest location in downtown Cincinnati last week.

The high-end steakhouse joins a number of other restaurants and bars at The Banks, a $600 million development along the Ohio River.

I'm trying to remember what kind of Roadhouse was there across from the megachurch on Ridge. They tore it down like 4 years ago.

Both New Yorkers and Chicagoans seem to claim White Castle too. When really Wichita should be crowing, though they don't even have a White Castle any more.

Corporate rebranding campaigns are fascinating.  White Castle is the next Target.

They should go retro and bring back their old logo:

Also, look for this new Wendy's logo coming soon:

Was that a Texas Roadhouse maybe?  It was in an odd location by itself and never seemed to have anyone in it.  I think I went there once when I lived in Oakley.  It was in an odd location all by itself.  It's funny that a couple dozen of the same caliber chain places will be going in across the street now.

As for Logan's, it's basically the same thing, I actually thought they all had the same parent company until now.  I travel for work to some small towns in the south and have been to more Logan's than I'd care to admit.

It was originally a Ponderosa Steakhouse and then a Roadhouse Grill.

Jesus, how overboard can people go with the same concept? I blame Alan Jackson.

I've heard that too, but I'm wondering if this was confused with another building around the corner on Main.  1604 Main (now demolished) was White Castle #5 was opened in 1927 (photo from 1947).

Also interesting was the White Castle #4 at 1807 Race next to Findlay Market, built in 1927 and closed in 1936.

^Wow.  I wish that was still there!

Chateau Blanc!

Polly Campbell gives it 2 stars out of 4. Based on my experiences, her review is spot on. I'm hopeful it's just growing pains and things continue to improve.

Mahogany's cuisine lacks creative soul

Locally owned Banks restaurant needs more sophisticated southern dishes on its menu

Mahogany’s, the new soul food restaurant on The Banks, is one of just a couple in the riverfront development that are locally owned. That gives some welcome balance to the lineup of chain restaurants.

It’s a beautiful new place, with its rich earth-color walls, hanging lamps of twisted wood and a red walkway that curves past the wine locker to the restrooms. I love the sophisticated gold wallpaper in the women’s room, the gold chairs, the blue back-lit bar. It’s a backdrop fit for drinking brandy or flirting or making business decisions.

This new location is much higher profile than the original Mahogany’s in Hamilton, and it’s billed as “upscale Southern cuisine.” While the atmosphere fits that description, the food, sorry to say, just doesn’t.

Polly doesn't like any restaurant that has TVs and Mahogany's, like everywhere else in The Banks, has them throughout. In her negative review of Crave, which she visited an hour before a Reds game was to start, she criticized it for being loud and having TVs showing sports.

Diners to get another OTR option in late fall with eclectic Zula

Zula Restaurant & Wine Bar will soon be joining Over-the-Rhine’s flourishing entertainment district.

“Owning a restaurant has always been part of my life,” said Tsvika “Vik” Silberberg, chef and owner of Zula. He opened his first restaurant in his native Tel Aviv, Israel, in 1980. He moved to Cincinnati in 2000.

New downtown restaurant offering 15-minute or it's free lunch

Locals_8*280.jpg?v=1

A quick lunch is a must for me. There are stories to edit, blogs to write and Tweets to be... tweeted.

So news of a new downtown lunch option, that will serve up food fast, is music to ears.

Local’s Sports Bar & Grill will start serving up lunch Monday, Oct. 22. And if customers don’t get their meal quickly, it will be free.

^^Do you know where Zula is supposed to be? I don't subscribe and the location is not mentioned. I'm guessing around 14th/Vine area.

I had the ribs and I though they were pretty tough, but the sides were good. They still appear to be rolling out their full menu -- when I was there, they had the soft opening menu plus a few dinner specials.

Anyone have any info on the restaurant going in next to Cumin on Erie Ave?  Lots of work going on there.

Elias Leisring is opening a second location of his wildly popular Eli’s BBQ in Over-the-Rhine at Vine and 14th St. In addition to his signature pulled pork, smokin' ribs, and killer 'cue sides, the new location will include beer, wine, and liquor. Leisring says no crafty cocktails—his bar menu will go cowboy hard, serving canned beers and straight up mixers. The cash-only restaurant will seat about 40, and weather permitting, another 30 in the outdoor courtyard. Leisring expects to be open seven days a week with later hours than his Riverside Dr. location, and is shooting for an opening date of January 2013. elisbarbeque.com

"M" is going to be a wood brick oven restaurant, casual atmosphere, same owner as Cumin

^ I don't think they will have any trouble filling that space with a new tenant. It will just be interesting to see if it's a local place or a chain.

Out of business. But the chef from the Maisonette/Pigall's, Jean-Robert de Cavel, owns the top restaurant on the Zagat list above.

thanks. I loved the Maisonette building. Is that still a restaurant?

yeah, it's being renovated into two restaurant spaces. Boca is moving to it and then an Italian trattoria is also going to be there (if memory serves). next door in the old Barleycorn's building, 4EG just opened their 10th and most impressive space - a bar/club called Igby's --- which is, imo, in a league of its own for cincinnati

Ate at Metropole on Tuesday night.  Drinks, apps and staff were wonderful.  The entrees got mixed reviews from our quad of diners.  I was hooked once I tasted the smoked butter for the bread.  I even liked the smoked grapes as garnish that came on our Charcuterie board!

The space is an interesting mix of low key elements, but the original lobby floor is definitely my favorite part.  I love that they decided to showcase the floor and not repair the damage that years of prior renovation has wrought on its appearance today, or worse, cover it up with new flooring.  I'd love to have one of the huge white leather banquettes throughout the space, despite the fact that the embossed surface made it impossible to scoot into a seating position easily.  Overall, I'd say it was classy-casual.  Can't wait to go back and try more of the menu items.

Moerlein opens restored Over-the-Rhine brewery

Hardman_Moerlein*280.jpg?v=1

It took eight years, but Greg Hardman has finally completed his plan to bring back Cincinnati’s brewing legacy.

Hardman’s Christian Moerlein Brewing Co. opened its Over-the-Rhine brewing facility Wednesday. The plant opening will enable Moerlein to expand distribution and create jobs, in addition to its broader significance.

“It’s a return of our grand brewing heritage in the heart of the Brewery District,” Hardman said.

It should also be noted that Cilantro has now moved into its new location in the old Jerusalem Restaurant space. That means the entire Papa Dino's building is vacant and could be rented out to a larger tenant.

Gold Star on Short Vine has closed.  I talked to that owner many times, he was a great guy, but I hadn't been in there in about 6 months so I don't know what happened.

Gold Star on Short Vine has closed.  I talked to that owner many times, he was a great guy, but I hadn't been in there in about 6 months so I don't know what happened.

That's a shame, I used to go in there at least once a week when at UC.  The owner was a really great guy and had lots of stories about that crap that went down on Short Vine.  The $1.00 student price for conies was an awesome deal, considering they were like $1.79 each in the Gold Star in TUC.  A couple friends and I helped him make posters advertising it and put them up around campus.  There's just not a lot of students heading to Short Vine the past few years.  It doesn't help that there's the TUC Gold Star as well as the one over by the Hospital adjacent to the UDF.

In this thread: Gold Star people!

Seems like almost everyone I know prefers Skyline.

^Well, that's because Skyline is better. Though neither are as good as Pleasant Ridge or Camp Washington Chili, but I don't know if this is the place for that discussion.

The TUC Gold Star is no longer there. It is now a Papa Johns.

While we're at it, Taco Bell Replaced Pizza Hut and Chick-fil-a replaced the asian restaurant, Burger King replaced Wendy's, and sushi is still there.

^ Skyline as a restaurant is better, but judging by just the actual chili Gold Star wins, hands down.  I always buy the Gold Star cans/frozen packs to make at home.  Neither can touch Camp Washington at 4:00 AM though.

I don't blame them, I NEVER want to touch Camp Washington, at ANY time.  I understand I might be in the minority there, but to me it doesn't have good flavor.  Good for people watching though.

I wonder if there's too many non-native Cincinnatians attending UC to keep the Gold Stars open these days.
