Old factory will be bar, restaurant

Automotive design to be key component

Feb. 8, 2013 10:06 PM,

Written by Polly Campbell

An old concrete factory on Eastern Avenue is being turned into a bar and restaurant that takes its theme from automotive design and its menu from Baja California.

Algo Garage is taking shape in a former concrete company at 3560 Eastern Ave., near Stanley Avenue, with plans to open this summer.

Toby Keith's sued for back rent

DOWNTOWN — Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar and Grill, the first restaurant named to The Banks riverfront development, is being sued for not paying rent.

Toby Keith’s owners owe more than $121,000 in past-due rent and other fees for its 77,000-square-foot restaurant and bar located along Second Street, according to the lawsuit filed in Hamilton County Common Pleas Court.

^ Very surprised it's not Johnny Rockets.

Never been to TKILTBAG...but I can't say I will miss it. Sort of offered something unique for the area, though, regardless of its chain status. I wonder why they have been so unsuccessful. Maybe after baseball (and to a lesser extent football) season, their target demographic had been taking a break from Downtown.

My understanding is that this is a rent/lease dispute - apparently they're contending that Tin Roof moving in violated their leasing agreement.

***FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE***

MAYBERRY GASTRO PUB GOES GERMAN FOR BOCKFEST

OTR Bar and Eatery Celebrates Bockfest with German Food, German Music, and a Selection of Bock Beers

This March 1st through 3rd, Over-the-Rhine will host the 21st Annual Bockfest—an event designed to promote the neighborhood’s rich brewing tradition, as well as its connection to German-style bock beer. Mayberry Gastro Pub will join in the festivities by turning German for the weekend. The local Gastro Pub will honor OTR’s vibrant history with a German menu, a selection of bock beers on tap, and music from Blechbläser Zinzinnati—OTR’s Authentic German Brass Band.

The Menu

On Friday March 1st from 11 AM to 10 PM and Saturday March 2nd from noon to 10 PM, Mayberry Gastro Pub will feature a special menu with a variety of German cuisine. Guests will enjoy favorites like “Bock Beer Battered Cod with Corned Beef, House Pickles, Rye Slaw and Thousand Island Dressing,” or “House German Pumpernickel with Bock Beer Cheese Soup.”

“We wanted to make sure we highlighted Over-the-Rhine’s rich, German heritage in our menu,” said Chef Joshua Campbell of Mayberry. “You’ll find plenty of classic German flavors to enjoy with a nice bock beer.”

Mayberry Gastro Pub will also serve its regular brunch menu Friday and Saturday from 11 PM to 3:45 AM, and Sunday from 11 AM to 3 PM. Both the Bockfest menu and the brunch menu can be found online at www.mayberrycincy.com/menu.

Keg Tappings

In addition to having a selection of bock beers on tap throughout the event, Mayberry Gastro Pub will feature a tapping of Bell’s Consecrator on Friday at 5 PM, and a tapping of Ayinger Celebrator on Saturday at 1 PM.

Blechbläser Zinzinnati

On Sunday March 3rd at 1 PM, guests of Mayberry Gastro Pub are in for a special treat. OTR’s Blechbläser Zinzinnati will be on site playing German brass music as it was heard around the turn of the 20th century. Featuring players from the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra such as Carson McTeer, Doug Lindsay, and Chris Kiradjieff; the band covers a variety of musical styles such as Bavarian folk music, German drinking songs, and transcriptions of the music of Meyerbeer and Brahms. The music played by Blechbläser Zinzinnati was obtained from original manuscripts discovered in the library of Henry Wohlgemuth—German native and former Principal Trumpet of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra from the 1920’s through the 1950’s. The music is scored for four brass instruments, and was most likely performed by other members of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra.

A Brief History of OTR and Bockfest

In the 1800s, Cincinnati was one of America’s most prolific brewing cities, and Over-the-Rhine was the epicenter of beer production and consumption. Many of Cincinnati’s German immigrants brought with them a particular taste for bock beer – a style that became very popular in pre-Prohibition era Cincinnati. This complex and hardy beer is historically linked to spring due to the German monks who drank it as a substitute for food during Lenten fasts.

In 1992, the Hudepohl-Schoenling Brewing Company created Bockfest as a way to celebrate and honor Cincinnati’s rich brewing history. Each spring, attendees from all over flock to Over-the-Rhine to see the parade, enjoy bock beer at local bars, and support the various merchants that make Over-the-Rhine such a great community. Through the hard work and dedication of local bar owners, Over-the-Rhine residents, and non-profit organizations like Merchants on Main Street, the festival has continued for over twenty years.

New fast-casual meatball restaurant coming to Short Vine

meatballkitchen2*304.jpg

A new-to-Cincinnati fast-casual restaurant is opening on Short Vine, and it’s solely focused on meatballs.

Meatball Kitchen signed a lease for 1,200 square feet of space at Vine Street Flats. The restaurant, operated by former New York City restaurant and bar owner Dan Katz, is expected to open in November at 2912 Vine St.

“There’s nothing like it in Cincinnati,” Katz told me Tuesday. “It’s going to be like a meatball festival.”

Five Guys closed in West Chester, what happened?

In terms of fast-casual restaurants, Five Guys Burgers and Fries is about the closest thing to a sure-fire money maker. So why did the Five Guys in West Chester close?

------------

Carroll sold the property to Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers, a Baton Rogue, La.-based chicken finger restaurant.

Correct, the restaurant just sells chicken fingers. The chicken fingers come with crinkle-cut fries, Texas Toast, coleslaw and Cane’s sauce. And you can get your chicken fingers on a sandwich, but that’s it.

^ for someone who only does chicken fingers, they aren't very good. And way over priced.

^Yet every student at OSU raves about it.

HELL YES.

I always wondered why Cincinnati didn't have either Zaxby's or Raising Cane's, but Columbus and Lexington did. Finally.

chuys from austin! i didnt know they were chaining out. very good. the margaritas are better than the food, but nice to have it up in ohio.

I walked past Aronoff today and noticed the door was open on the retail space across the street that has had its windows covered for quite some time with white paper and bouncing yellow balls.

There was some work going on inside.. i know someone mentioned on here there was a bar going in there.  property hear some more details soon as they are building out the space now.

I don't have a press clipping for it, but a new Mexican street food restaurant called Mazunte opened last week on Madison at Red Bank, in a strip right next to Rainbow Car Wash.  I've eaten there twice in their first six days.  Not another burrito chain.  Excellent quality, leaning toward Oaxacan cuisine.  Highly recommended.  Prices are $7-10.

When I read "new Mexican street food restaurant," I started praying to Zeus you weren't going to say Northside.

Northside could use a traditional Mexican diner/cantina type of place.

Pretty soon the residents will have to decide on a new name: Tacoside or Northtaco?

or go retro with Tacosville

Cummintacos doesn't sound very appealing.

At least it's not Mexicantown like in detroit...

Pretty soon the residents will have to decide on a new name: Tacoside or Northtaco?

I prefer calling our home the Taco District.

Man, I hope someone buys the Honey space soon and does something good with it.  We're missing having a really nice dining option in the neighborhood.

I don't really like that kind of Sublime marketing, as in making your establishment sound like it is in a Sublime song. You know why the guy in Sublime was so mellow, carefree and happy-sounding all the time? He was a heroin addict!

Downtown El Coyote is giving lunch another shot

Tom Demeropolis Reporter- Cincinnati Business Courier

After stopping its lunch service in June, El Coyote’s downtown location restarted lunch service this week.

Owner Jim Bell said when the restaurant, which has operated an outpost in Anderson Township for 30 years, started lunch service downtown in March, it wasn’t organized.

The Lucy Blue pizza window at 12th and Walnut has been closed for a couple weeks now.

isn't that because of their new location at 12th and Main?

Originally they claimed they had no plans of closing the pick up window, allowing the 12th and Main location to be more of a pizzeria/bar (closing at 2) and allowing the pickup window to sell pizzas till late in the morning. I know the owner of Lucy Blue talked about opening up a hot dog place in the pick up window a while back, but that was before the huge delays in opening up the new Lucy Blue location on Main.

I just heard a rumor about a taco place opening up in the old Lucy Blue pickup window via facebook. I have no additional details, though.

I've heard it's going to be a higher end carry out. Like market wines without the bar.

Firehouse on Short Vine to become Ladder 19

09/17/13 at 2:09pm by Polly Campbell

Short Vine, the stretch of Vine Street in Corryville a few blocks from the east side of UC, is the next Cincinnati neighborhood to get a serious makeover. A new streetscape project, construction of new residential units, and a strong  influx of new businesses is transforming the area best known as the home of Bogart’s.

Among those new businesses is a restaurant and bar called  Ladder 19,  which will open in the old firehouse that  was the home of Zino’s  decades ago.

The New York-style pizza by the slice restaurant and “speakeasy” style bar will move into the space most recently occupied by Mayberry Gastro Pub. The restaurant and bar is aiming for a spring 2014 opening.

“We’ve got a great reputation, a great response in Covington,” said co-owner Alex Coats, who opened a spot in Covington’s Mainstrasse Village about a year and a half ago. Goodfellas Pizzeria started with a location in Lexington. It now has two spots in Lexington, plus the Covington location at 603 Main St.
