Taste of Belgium Uptown opening on Short Vine 10/21

Chicago Gyros on McMillan St just got a liquor license and will begin serving alcohol this Friday and on Saturday before the UC football game.

I was never cool with that place.  It was a terrible club from day one and I am thrilled that the city is taking them down.

Cilantro also got a liquor license.

New downtown Cincinnati steakhouse sets opening date

Tom Demeropolis Reporter- Cincinnati Business Courier

J. Hamman Prime, the new steakhouse coming to downtown Cincinnati, is scheduled to open Nov. 22.

The restaurant is the first new retail tenant to open in the newly named AT580 at the corner of Sixth and Walnut streets since it was sold earlier this year.

Bill taps open-container law as way to get development brewing

A growing number of cities nationwide, including Memphis, Louisville and Montgomery, Ala., allow people to openly drink on the streets, a la New Orleans, to encourage economic development.

Now, a bipartisan “open container” bill giving that option to Ohio cities is given a good chance of passage in coming months. Sponsoring state Sen. Eric Kearney, a North Avondale Democrat, is tweaking it after a committee hearing, with a committee vote likely late this year or when the General Assembly returns in March.

I think this is a great addition. This may open the floodgates for other chains to open up in OTR, but we'll see. Good news for me!

Not sure if this fits, but it looks like OTR is getting a pinballcade - http://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/porters-pinball-parlor-in-cincinnati

Kind of wish they'd go the whole way and make it a barcade, I would be impressed if that kind of place opened in Cincinnati:

Examples:

http://barcadebrooklyn.com/

http://hqbeercade.com/

http://groundkontrol.com/ (my favorite)

http://16-bitbar.com/ (Ohio - Columbus always picks up on national trends before the rest of the state).

^^ Tried to get into the 16 Bit Bar on Saturday and there was a line outside of about 25 people. Very windy night so we didn't wait the expected 30m. Could definitely see this working in OTR or at The Banks.

There is something called Arcade Legacy in Forest Fair (or whatever) that has old arcade games. No liquor license though.

Since yesterday was Christmas, thought I would comment on the restaurant scene for the Holiday. Major differences from years begone when vitually everything was closed, resturants, stores, etc. You were lucky if a few gas stations opened up in the evening, and the majority of these were along the interstates so people could continue their journey.

But now everybody and their brother is open on Christmas Day. Admittedly, at our age we were looking for a restaurant, selected Mitchell's Fish Market in Union Centre. It was OK. Would I return based on this visit - NO! For the price delivered about what an Outback Steakhouse would. At least we got fed and didn't have to cook. But it is a reflection of our society. On the way home saw a Gold Star open on Tylersville Rd - a friggin Gold Star. Who is so damn lazy they could not go to the market and buy some frozen Gold Star or Skyline and nuke them at home?

So now we have 5am openings for Day after Chrstmas Sales. Yes we are certainly moving forward. Is there no end to this insanity?

It's stupid. American companies would rather be open and have 2 customers in the place, lose money all day and piss off their employees than admit that there are some times that aren't appropriate to conduct business.

I was in Los Angeles for Christmas about 15 years ago & it seemed like any other day. Groceries, gas stations, fast food were all open.

Lotsa people out & about, too.

Gold Star's ownership might not be Christian, like Chinese restaurants.

Yup, I went to Sichuan Chili in Evendale last night and the place was packed with mostly Asian diners. Oh, and if you like authentic chinese this place is great.  A little expensive though.

Lookin' up Cranley, the Gold Star fam is Eastern Orthodox. A lot of Chinese in the US are Christian.

The David family is Orthodox Christian, but they only own the corporation and a few stores.  Since I sincerely doubt that the particular store staying open was a company-wide mandate, I think it's safe to assume the franchisee that owns that particular location decided it was worth staying open (no matter his/her particular religion).

New craft beer concept coming to OTR

I love craft beer. And like many who do, but haven’t immersed themselves in the complexities of different types of malts and hops and the combinations thereof, I have a very scientific method for choosing what beer to have at a bar: First I choose the style of beer I want. Then I choose whatever tap handle looks the coolest.

Two Cincinnati entrepreneurs – the guys behind the Pedal Wagon that you occasionally see ferrying revelers between bars in Over-the-Rhine – want to help Cincinnatians choose beers that they will truly enjoy most without having to rely on which breweries they are most familiar with or which tap handles look the most interesting.

I thought that about Gold Star. The wildly different hours seen at various locations led me to believe that there were multiple franchisees.

And not all are the same. Some of those Gold Star locations are horribly dated and under resourced, especially in comparison to Skyline.

Also, there are many Gold Star Chili locations in the Middle East, except under the name "Chili House".  Here is one of their radio ads:

http://www.chilihouse.com/ChiliFannFM%20final.mp3

^^very cool about Chili House-I did not know they were Cincinnati Chili. I drove past one of those in Jordan a little while back.

If I would have known I could of had a 5-way in the desert, I would have definitely stopped...

That is interesting. Though I'm thinking about boycotting them. They are a Bengals' sponsor, Cranley had a sit down with Mike Brown about the streetcar. Brown said heck no to any $$ for the streetcar. Brown and Gold Star in cahoots(always wanted to say that)? I'll stick with Dixie and Camp Wash. Chili.

Say no to corporate chili! Support your local, indie chili parlor!

A place that gets remodeled every five years is even more unpleasant than something that is "dated", trust me.

Looks like the Empress Chili in Hartwell closed down. So now only the Alexandria KY location is open.

UPDATE: Looks like there is still one on Werk Rd. in the masterfully designed Glenway Crossings shopping center!

New Richmond, Ohio too. I stop by there on my drive down to my parents a lot.

"Empress Chili - Hartwell

Dear Patrons,

We are now closed at this Hartwell location. We want to THANK all of our patrons your loyalty, friendships, and support. We have enjoyed serving you Cincinnati's original chili over the last 2 1/2 years. You can still enjoy Empress Chili at our Western Hills, Alexandria, and downtown ( The Squirrel ) locations - as well as The Beach Waterpark. You can also purchase Empress Chili at all Rempke- Biggs stores."

Wasn't Frisch's recently trying to play up the quality of their food in advertisements? Fresh-never-frozen beef, everything prepared on site daily, etc. Now they say, "sorry Vanilla Coke fans, we're switching to Pepsi because it's cheaper." Not that any one sugary carbonated beverage is lower "quality" than any other, but the cheapness angle doesn't make them look very good. It makes you wonder what other corners they are cutting.

Considering how militant people get over the Pepsi vs. Coke thing, I'd have thought they would have gone by surveying their clientele - not just making an accounting decision.

This is bullshit! In my opinion, there are only two good things about Frisch's: 1) their ranch dressing and 2) coke with their soft ice. Frisch's essentially serves hospital cafeteria grade food, so it definitely doesn't surprise me to see them cutting corners to save a penny.

Now this is how things are supposed to be. The Cincinnati Restaurant section is about chili and Frisch's.

I worked at Frisch's in high school.  I was the only employee who didn't smoke.  We ran out of maternity smocks, had to run to another store to borrow more.

Really?! I thought ranch dressing came from some global ranch dressing factory.

Looks like the Indian restaurant that took the place of Papa Dino's is out of business.

Also, Lenhardt's/Christie's demolished this morning.

Mr. India, as it was known, did indeed close and is going to become Curries, presumably another Indian buffet.

Also, Cilantro's old space gave way to a new place called Conscious Kitchen. Which opened randomly and then proceeded to close three weeks later. So that spot is empty again. But the spot next to it that was always empty is being built out and is going to be some sort of carry out place called Carry Out Trance or something. No clue what that is or if it's even a restaurant or just a corner store type place.
