OTR vendor opening restaurant in Walnut Hills

The owner of Gomez Salsa, the Over-the-Rhine walk-up window serving gourmet salsas, tacos and turtle shells, is opening a new restaurant in Walnut Hills.

 

Andrew Gomez hopes to open a standalone Gomez Salsa restaurant in the old Angst Coffee space at 2437 Gilbert Ave. by June. Gomez himself is a Walnut Hills resident.

Yes.

 

There was a dispute between the tenant and property owner that they couldn't work out.

Just tried e+o for the first time ... WOW, freakin amazing (tried 3 different plates)!

New restaurant and wine bar headed to Fountain Square

 

We Olive signed a 10-year lease with Fifth Third Bancorp for a 1,500-square-foot portion of the space formerly occupied by El Coyote. A wine bar and small plates restaurant, along with tasting room and education space, are expected to open in early 2016 near the corner of Sixth and Walnut streets.

 

The former El Coyote space has been divided into three parts. One will be occupied by Bru Burger Bar, which is set to open in November. The third tenant has not been signed yet.

Banks lands new restaurant

The Banks development along Cincinnati's riverfront has landed the second restaurant that will be part of Phase II.

 

Pies & Pints, a gourmet pizza and beer restaurant, will be located just west of the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center at the Banks, joining Taste of Belgium in Phase II of the development.

Jean-Robert's newest restaurant has a name

Cincinnati chef and restaurateur Jean-Robert de Cavel and maître d' Robert Brown's new fine-dining restaurant in the Great American Tower has a name: L.

 

The Enquirer reports that de Cavel and Brown named the restaurant after their daughters, Lauren Brown – currently a chef at Daniel in New York – and Laeticia de Cavel.

Here's when one of Greater Cincinnati's first Nashville-style hot chicken restaurant will open

Nashville-style hot chicken is growing rapidly, with a number of restaurants planned for Cincinnati. One of the first entrants is opening tomorrow.

 

Louisville-based Joella's Hot Chicken is opening at 2440 High St. in Crescent Springs on April 5.

I tried to go to Taste of Belgium on Short Vine on Sunday around 1pm and it was mobbed with a 1-hour wait.  So we walked around the corner to Hangover Easy, which I have never been to.  Also mobbed with a 1-hour wait.  So we walk back up the little hill and wonder...is Mio's open?  Even while walking from its outside door to its inside door, it was unclear as to if it was open.  We get in there and it's open, but nobody's there.  We ended up eating there and it was fine.  One more group showed up during the time we were there. 

 

But it brings it all back to my biggest peeve with restaurants and other small businesses -- ARE YOU OPEN?  How do people not understand that their place of business needs to look like it's open?

Well dozens of other people weren't doing it.  The eventual success or demise of a restaurant has little to do with the food. 

 

 

 

Back when we were in a strip mall I had 3 open signs in the space of 8 square feet. Also there were flashing rope lights and an a-frame sign next to the road. There was a flashing DVD sign in the back window and a "now open" banner on the back of the store.

But it brings it all back to my biggest peeve with restaurants and other small businesses -- ARE YOU OPEN?  How do people not understand that their place of business needs to look like it's open? 

 

I've noticed this with plenty of businesses as well.  People tell me I should try various places I walk past quite often, but I'm never really sure when the places are open even while walking by them.  It's really bizarre almost like they just stopped caring and want to go out of business.

Yes, Yum Yum is a perfect example.  I've walked by that place four or five times a week for the last two years and was never able to figure out if was open.

If you want Chinese check out Orient Restaurant at 627 Main Street, although it is an example of a place I'm never 100% sure when it's open.  The guy who owns the place is the salt of the earth and is someone who recognizes the benefits of the streetcar to the city.

The food was pretty average and a bit pricey for what it was, however it is BYOB (at least I think it is, we brought our own) and the atmosphere is extremely unique. I don't think the decor has changed since 1960, and the only employees are the husband and wife who own the place and have to be pushing 100. It's worth a visit just to look at the 50 year old framed news clippings, restaurant reviews, and photos of visitors.

I've walked by Yum Yum so many times and I think I've seen it open twice. It does not instill confidence in me that my food will be fresh. So how was it? Yes Orient on Main is a "no frills" good, which is sometimes the best kind of good. When I am there, I feel like I'm in their house and they are making me dinner.

The other thing is that bars and restaurants with front awnings need to replace the awning every 2-3 years.  The worst offender I can think of is the Greenwich Tavern in Walnut Hills.  Their front entrance awning looks like it is at least 25 years old.  Plus, that place doesn't look open either. 

Mind blown...  Yum Yum Chinese is a functioning business?!

The Greenwich could be so, so much more than it is.  I've encouraged the WHRF to form a better relationship with them in the past, as I think it could really be a great asset for the neighborhood, but it doesn't seem much has happened there.  I know the RF has a facade improvement program, something the Greenwich could benefit from, I would think.

I think the current owners of The Greenwich took over in the early 2000s.  The first time I went there was around 1999 and I can't point to a single thing that has changed.  Same Egyptian head, same suit of armor, same fish tank.  They can keep all that stuff but should replace the carpet and just wipe the place down. 

I ate there once. I had the "Yum Yum Ding Dong Chinese Chicken" which was, amazingly, actually the name of an item on the menu.

It's not downtown, but Ameriasia in Covington is worth the trip.  Best Chinese in the region, in my opinion.

It's not downtown, but Ameriasia in Covington is worth the trip.  Best Chinese in the region, in my opinion.

 

Never been a huge fan of Ameriasia myself, but Riverside Korean is directly across the street and has always been my favorite Asian spot in the city.  Lots of options on that particular block.

New wine bar coming to former Indigo/J-Bar space

A new wine bar that will carry an international selection, including a reserve list of high-end bottles, is set to open in the former Indigo/J-Bar space on Hyde Park Square.

 

Cork & Cap at 2637 Erie Ave. on Hyde Park Square is hosting its grand opening on April 6. General manager Kenny Huff told me the concept is a value-driven wine bar with a menu of small plates and entrees that complement the beverage selection.

Region's first cat cafe coming to West Chester

A local entrepreneur is opening a new coffee shop and cafe in West Chester where patrons can enjoy espresso drinks, tea and sweets while surrounded by cats.

 

Jenni Barrett and Ken Molnar hope to open the Kitty Brew Cat Cafe in West Chester as early as this summer. The idea was inspired by an episode of "Shark Tank."

Eli's BBQ founder launches new downtown Cincinnati concept

 

The founder of Eli's BBQ is launching a new concept in the former Margaritas space on Sixth Street with a focus on delivery to downtown's businesses.

 

Elias Leisring announced Saundra's Kitchen on his Facebook page. The concept will fill the former Margaritas space at 214 E. Sixth St.

 

Saundra's Kitchen has apps in the Google Play and Apple App Stores for Android and iOS. Users download the app, select their order through the menu and it will be delivered anywhere in the downtown area. Orders can be placed up to four days in advance.

French Fry Heaven offers poutine on steroids

 

French Fry Heaven hosted its grand opening on April 7 near the campus of the University of Cincinnati, but it had lines out the door before that even happened.

 

French Fry Heaven is open at 206 Calhoun St. The concept, which piles loads of toppings on a base of French fries, was created by CEO Scott Nelowet in Jacksonville, Fla. Click the images below to see inside the new location and check out some of its offerings.

Oakley Station lands new-to-market restaurant

 

A new-to-market restaurant concept specializing in soup, sandwiches and salads is now open at the Oakley Station development.

 

Ladles opened at 3206 Vandercar Way on April 5. The concept centers around fresh food made in-house daily.

Had it last weekend. Was good, but ridiculously expensive for what it is. Payed almost 20 for 2 half sandwiches and 2 cups of soup.

Are any food trucks left? 

 

I bring this up because the OU Alumni facebook page just sent out a picture of the Burrito Buggy -- Ohio's best-known food truck.  It has been at the same street corner almost every day since 1984.  Once or twice a year it would go on a field trip to the county fair or something like that, but otherwise the buggy was always there.  So the supposed strong point of food trucks is actually their weakness.  You need to get a street corner and stay there every day for years and years.

If your point is simply that food trucks benefit from having permanent locations, I think that's true for many food trucks, but not all since some food trucks prefer to only serve special events (therefore not requiring full time staffing). That being said, I'd like to see Cincinnati designate a few "permanent" food truck locations.

Food trucks offer different advantages/disadvantages versus opening a brick-and-mortar restaurant. And within each model, there are countless ways of managing it (hours, staffing, etc). With either model, most will probably fail to last more than a few years. That's just the nature of an industry like food service that has relatively low barriers to entry.

 

 

OTR eatery makes its debut

A new neighborhood restaurant focused on natural wine, approachable Midwestern food and crafted coffee is now open in Over-the-Rhine.

 

Pleasantry opened its doors on Sunday with plans for breakfast and lunch service from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Saturday at 118 W. 15th St., according to the restaurant’s Facebook page.

One of the nation's largest Indian restaurant chains, which specializes in upscale authentic Southern Indian cuisine, is opening a location in Greater Cincinnati.

 

Persis Indian Grill is coming to the former Relish space at 5947 Deerfield Blvd. in Mason. It will be the 22nd location for the upscale franchise, which got its start and is based in Dayton.

Shuttered downtown favorite reopens in former Paula's Cafe spot

A longtime downtown restaurant that was forced to close late last year when its building began converting to apartments has found new life in the former Paula's Cafe space on Fourth Street.

 

Cafe deVine spent 12 and 1/2 years at 309 Vine St. in what's now known at 4th & Vine Tower before closing in September 2015. The building was converted from offices to apartments and the restaurant didn't fit in.

Specialty retailer sets Fountain Square opening date

A new specialty restaurant focused on artisan olive oil and small-production wines headed to a space adjacent to Fountain Square has an opening date set.

 

We Olive will open at 33 E. Sixth St. on June 25, according to its Facebook page.
