A new Vietnamese restaurant is opening downtown in the space vacated by It's Just Crepes in 2014.

Saigon Subs and Rolls is going into the space at 151 W. Fourth St. It's Just Crepes closed that and two other locations in January 2014.

^ I tried their food at Asian Food Fest and it was very good and cheap (reminded me a bit of Le's). They said they were looking for a place to set up shop and I'm glad they found one. That southwest corner of downtown is really lacking in lunch spots.

Bruegger's Bagels on Clifton Ave. has kicked the bucket!

I think the place caught fire a few weeks back. I saw several fire trucks out front and now there's a sign on the window that says closed for remodeling.

Construction fencing was installed around the restaurant today.  So it's either going to be renovated or a bulldozer is going to take the place down in about 20 minutes.

Oh no, I used to work at the Starbucks there and I have no idea how the heck that building is being reused.  It's completely infested with roaches, has serious structural issues with a leaky roof, and worst of all there's no second means of egress.  It's a complete death trap.  I have no idea how the hell it's even legal to open something in there.

202 W McMillan is owned by the same owner as 2507 Clifton (which houses Chipotle), so it seems like a secondary egress could be handled by connecting those buildings... but I have no idea if that has been done.

2507 Clifton: http://wedge3.hcauditor.org/view/re/1020006014300/2015/summary

I used to work at a coffee shop in Mount Adams, and it only had one point of egress as well. Must be fairly common.

^ If the space is small enough that the maximum occupancy is 49 people or fewer, it can sometimes be permitted to have only one exit with certain conditions.

New Mexican concept with tequila inspiration coming to Summit Park

Bourbon is hot right now. So are barbecue and smoked meats. So it stands to reason that it would be entrepreneurial to combine the two in the form of a restaurant. That's exactly what one Cincinnati restaurateur is doing.

Alex Ng hopes to open Bourbon Smokehouse in the former Saigon Cafe space at 3672 Erie Ave. by late September. Ng also owned Saigon Cafe, which he closed and moved to 200 W. McMillan St. in Clifton Heights to make way for Bourbon Smokehouse.

Local 127 and Lavomatic close

Two urban eateries served up their last meals this weekend, as both announced on their social media accounts they were closing.

Local 127, located at 413 Vine Street in Downtown, served up meals for the last time Saturday, while Lavomatic, at 1211 Vine Street in Over-the-Rhine, announced it has closed on its Facebook page Sunday night.

Something appears to be going on inside the former Local 127 location. Windows are papered over and I saw a construction worker going in the front door.

Here's the newest restaurant coming to the Banks

A popular Cincinnati restaurant is taking the final empty space that was left behind when WG Kitchen + Bar closed at the Banks in 2014.

Tiger Dumpling is relocating its property near the University of Cincinnati at 249 Calhoun St. to the Banks, which will become its restaurant's flagship location. The move is scheduled for August.

More below:

http://www.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/news/2016/06/08/heres-the-newest-restaurant-coming-to-the-banks.html

From the Business Courier:

Tiger Dumpling is leasing 11,360 square feet of manufacturing space at 1220 Hillsmith Drive in the former Panera manufacturing facility. Owner Hunter Hebert told me the company invested substantial capital into the new space, which will allow Tiger Dumpling to produce 75,000 to 100,000 dumplings daily. [...]

Tiger Dumpling actually doesn't have any physical locations open right now, but that's going to change soon. The restaurant closed its Clifton Heights location in anticipation of opening up a much larger restaurant at the Banks. Director of operations Thomas Knier told me the company plans to open five more locations by the end of this year or early 2017.

I find that a little worrying. They couldn't figure out how to keep their single location at U Square up and running while doing this expansion...and now they're planning to do a multi-city expansion with five or more locations? That sounds very, very ambitious.

^ Yeah and their dumplings aren't very good, so...

I find that a little worrying. They couldn't figure out how to keep their single location at U Square up and running while doing this expansion...and now they're planning to do a multi-city expansion with five or more locations? That sounds very, very ambitious.

Oh come on Holy Grail closed their Clifton location and look how things turned out for them.  Dumplings are the new chicken wings.

Dumplings are incredibly easy to make, and contain about 10 cents worth of ingredients. Unlike chicken wings there's no sort of physical limitation on the ingredients (chickens only have two wings) that could lead to continuing price hikes - it's just ground up meat, chives, and flour for the dough. If you use a greasy enough meat, some chives, and have a salty sauce of any sort you can make them taste good. I once made dumplings out of Goetta that were actually pretty good, I might make them again this weekend for breakfast now that I'm thinking about it.

Tiger Dumpling's problem, IMO, was that they were charging too much. I think they were 5 for $5. It should probably have been $1 or $2 cheaper.

I don't think they ever had any intention of keeping the Clifton location open.  I believe their lease was expiring and they decided to close that location with the intention of opening up a much larger place at the Banks.

Doing business near campuses was a lot easier 10 years ago when all the buildings were old and the rent was 1/5 what it is today in those new ones.

Dumplings are something that I'm not willing to pay for since I'm used to getting them for free from old people -- like pot roast.

Cinque's new chef worked with Emeril Lagasse

^ Yeah and their dumplings aren't very good, so...

Umm they're the best dumplings I've ever had. Granted I haven't had them in Asia or a bigger city here, but yea...

^to each his own. I think they're dry, way too doughy, and the dipping sauce is awful. I haven't found a bomb dumpling spot in Cincy, but lots of places do better than Tiger imo. Susie Wongs, for one, has pretty great dumplings. Uncle Yips, which is up in the Evendale mini Asia Town cluster on Reading Rd. does a dim sum brunch on Sunday's which is supposed to be delicious, but I've not been yet.

^Bon's and Pacific Kitchen (both in Montgomery) are better for dim sum. Thank me later.

^ Yeah I second Bon Chinese for dim sum. I believe Uncle Yip's changed ownership and the quality stepped down a bit.

Except that they sold out of all of their food on Saturday and are closed today to restock...

I'm so confused as to how they are able to stay viable with so many locations? I was under the impression the Tuckers in the Southern portion of OTR was damaged?

^What?

The two Tucker's are independently owned and operated, though I believe the owners are family. It was the Vine Street Tucker's that was damaged in a fire.

The Vine street one is owned by the original family. The other one on 13th is not. It was sold out of the family at some point so there is no connection.

3CDC set out dedicated to making sure OTR didn't fill up with chains, and now all of the original restaurants located there are becoming chains. They really backed into that one on accident. When's the first Applebees going to open?

This bothers me too. If we put a carbon copy of the good restaurants out in the suburbs what's the point of them coming down to the city and spending money? Or, what's special about someone visiting from Indy or CBus if we have all the same places to eat?

There's a HUGE difference between a business starting in the neighborhood and expanding outward (which is good) vs. a chain coming in from the outside and extracting money from the economy.

Plus thunderdome HQ is still located in OTR. This is actually exactly what we want to have happen- Use our unique urban neighborhoods to spark enterprises that fuel economic growth.

www.cincinnatiideas.com

LOL: worried about The Eagle turning into Applebee's. That's funny.
