Over-the-Rhine bar shifts focus to restaurant

It originated as a board game bar, serving boozy drinks and snacks for people to pair with classic games like Risk, Monopoly, Battleship and Candy Land as well as newer strategy games – so-called "Euro Games" – like Settlers of Catan, King of Tokyo and Pandemic.

The restaurants at Hy-Vee are pretty nice and often quite crowded.

Who wants to eat at a restaurant in a freakin grocery store? Guess that's why they're testing this concept in Kentucky lol.

I was just in the Newport Kroger yesterday and noticed that they have an Eli's BBQ and some other chicken restaurant in there now. They have also significantly expanded the seating area of the Starbucks. They also were remodeling some of the deli/bakery area, again. Funny how the high value Kroger stores get remodeled every 18 months or so.

The one ColDayMan linked to is not inside the store though, it's a standalone restaurant. It will be interesting to see how this experiment goes.

Gourmet marshmallow and s'mores bar coming to Over-the-Rhine

Experimentation, a word from mom and an entrepreneurial streak led an archaeologist to decide to open Over-the-Rhine's newest sweets shop.

ITs kind of messed up when the neighborhood can easily be saturated with marshmellow bars but can't even facilitate basic needs like laundromats, boutique grocery stores, corner pharmacy stores, small hardware stores, etc.

Otr has very little in way of that which is really sad

Almost every new unit in OTR has laundry in the unit, or in the building. There isn't a growing demand for that service, and I can't imagine making money with all of the upfront costs associated with it. Pickup spots for other cleaners when you need specialty items dry-cleaned is probably all OTR will get.

How many small hardware stores are there in other cities? There's already Acme/Woods on 8th street.

That EMC place opened up by Findlay Market this summer. There's also Findlay Market. Also, that New York Dry Cleaners building seems to have quite a bit. Not everything you need, but enough to get by when you need it.

I'm sure pharmacies will come soon enough, but likely chains like CVS and Walgreens. The new Kroger will surely have one at Central Parkway.

Don't ever think OTR has hit "Peak-Hipster."  It hasn't.

FYI, 1210 Main is the storefront in between Camino and Allez. As soon as Urban Sites can get a new tenant into the former Park+Vine storefront, all of the storefronts on this block will be completely occupied... a huge improvement from how this block looked a few years ago.

I'm sure pharmacies will come soon enough, but likely chains like CVS and Walgreens. The new Kroger will surely have one at Central Parkway.

Walgreens and CVS each have two locations in the CBD, which seems like overkill for the amount of residents that currently live in the CBD. As OTR's population grows, maybe one of them will move north to serve that population better. Also, the Kroger at Central Parkway might have a pharmacy, which their current Vine Street store does not.

Obviously the two Walgreens and CVS stores downtown are not there just for the downtown residential population. They exist for the downtown workforce, and I bet they get the vast majority of their business from this demographic as well.

I feel like Alladin is the first full fledged resturaunt on main, with an outdoor dining patio to boot. I can honestly say that Main St is finally appearing to come alive. Still not there yet, but with the 16 bit Bowling Bar across the street, and the latest small eateries being opened by the Drinkery owner, I feel like Main is finally beginning to catch up to some extent with the rest of OTR.

What's funny is that 3CDC didn't want to work with Aladdin's Eatery because they're a chain (even though this is only their third location in Greater Cincinnati). I don't really care whether a business is or isn't a chain, I care about whether they offer a good product that the neighborhood wants.

Lebanese restaurant coming to Over-the-Rhine

Aladdin's Eatery is coming to 1203 Main St. in the space formerly occupied by Mixx Ultra Lounge. It is expected to open in early spring 2018, and marks the third Aladdin's location in the region, behind the original in West Chester and one in Hyde Park. [...]

Chalkly said Aladdin's initially approached the Cincinnati Center City Development Corp. (3CDC) about locating in Over-the-Rhine, but couldn't find space with them, since Aladdin's is a chain. She said Urban Sites, who Aladdin's ended up partnering with, was eager to get them into a space.

I should also note that I recently tried the new restaurant The Royal at the NW corner of 12th & Main. I had the grain bowl topped with pork. It was really good and the portions were very generous.

There is also major progress on The Takeway (deli/grocery from the guys who run Collective Espresso) and the new bar at 14th & Main from the same people as Liberty's/The Royal (I can't remember the name right now).

It has taken a long time to get all of these new businesses open on Main Street ... I remember talking about some of them as much as two years ago ... but the street is finally starting to transform with all of these new business openings.

On a side note, I was told that Main will be getting a number of sidewalk improvements this fall and will be repaved next spring. That should really help improve Main Street's image as well.

It's great to see Main Street starting to become its own. And Ziegler Park and garage will only accelerate that. But yes I found it odd 3CDC wouldn't work with Aladin's either. They are a chain as much as Bakersfield is a chain. (I know the Cincinnati location for bakersfield was the first one...only offering a point of reference). Aladin's Offes a good product and are family owned...it's great they are investing in Otr.  It's not like jack in the box or Chili's wanted to open.

What's particularly odd about the whole thing is that they let management groups like 4EG, Thunderdome, and the Senate/Abigail Street/Pontiac folks all open multiple spaces. And now Senate and most 4EG restaurants are chains. What a bad policy by 3CDC to deny Aladdin's

^ Yeah, this is ridiculous!

It kind of reinforces the stereotype about Cincinnati being insular and hostile to outsiders. It definitely helps to be a local and know people in Cincy, though I suppose that is true to some degree everywhere.

Cincinnati restaurateur closes final of four locations

A Cincinnati restaurant family has closed its final of four eateries, all of which have shuttered since January.

Owner James Riley posted on Facebook that Walt's Barbeque at 6040 Colerain Ave. closed on Sept. 24. Here's his full post:

Today, Sunday Sept. 24th was the last day of business for Walt's Barbeque(sic). The last four years have been filled with many challenges, obstacles, and many great memories. It's unfortunate that circumstances outside of my control have lead to us closing. Thank you everyone for your support over the last four years! I'm sure God has big plans in my future.
