Search to fill former Bella site down to single firm

Cincinnati Business Courier - October 27, 2006by Lisa Biank FasigStaff Reporter

The owner of the former Bella restaurant space downtown has narrowed its search for a successor to one local company, and expects to finalize a deal on the high-profile location within weeks.

The targeted party, based in Cincinnati, is pulling together its proposal, said Stephen Loftin, president of the Cincinnati Arts Association (CAA), which owns the building at Sixth and Walnut streets. While he declined to identify the company, some local restaurant and real estate sources said it could be Boca chef-owner David Falk and his investors, who have shown interest in the site for new concept.

^ Great news!

Just FYI, Ingredients (in the Westin Lobby) is open every day from 6 am to 6 pm...not too shabby!  This gives downtown residents and others another viable option for a "casual-style" meal on the weekend.

I hope it is the Boca owner being considered for the 6th and Walnut site, Boca has great food and seems to be very well run.

Can I just say something? I know this isn't entirely on topic with the thread but I remember someone talking about how burrito joes is better than Chipotle. I went to the one downtown and it was the burrito was terrrrrrrrrible. How can anyone say its better than chipotle? The rice was nasty, the meat was cold and boring and the cheese tasted like regular kraft cheese you buy in the store. The burrito had no taste to it.

Where is the Ethiopean restaurant someone told me about in P-Ridge? I lived there 3 years and have never heard of it. He said on Montgomery Road I'm wondering if its where Manhattan West was? Never had Ethiopean food...i bet its worth checking out.

I believe that there is also an Ethiopean restaurant located on W. 6th street, almost next to the newer Walgreens on the corner.

The restaurant, expected to open in December, is more in line with what downtown residents and employees are seeking, said Arn Bortz, whose company, Towne Properties, owns the building. He's also looking for casual-style chains, such as Panera Bread, to fill the former Redfish space a block away, at Seventh and Vine.

Great!  I love Jalapeños, we eat at the one in Montgomery/Madeira all the time.  You can never have too much Mexican in the city.  This is a great day for good news in the Queen City.

That's great news.

We got some food to go at lunch on Thursday and took it home.  It was good.  We thought about going by on Saturday but just assumed it would be closed.

So my hubby and I who live downtown were in the mood for a milkshake last night and couldn't think of a single place downtown that has them in the evening.  Any other places you can think of besides the Graeter's in Cafe Martin where we can get our dessert fix?.....Happy Halloween by the way

^Maybe Kaldi's?

Yeah, you could go for a Brandy Alexander!

There is a soft serve ice cream place in the 1200 block of Walnut that I went to half a dozen times this past summer.  The owner is very gracious, but it is just a walk-up window, no interior seating.  I think she is open all year till 9 or 10pm, sells hamburgers etc, but closed on Mondays.  I have never gone after dark, but she keeps her corner clean and hoodlum free.  Last time I was there she made a teenager get rid of an unlit cigarette he had in his mouth.  I think she may be Nation of Islam.  It should be safe to venture that far north on Walnut.  A small cone is $1 and shakes are about $3.

We went for ice cream at Cafe Martin once, but found it too expensive for kids.  Unfortunately, there's not much else in the downtown area for evening ice cream.  If anyone knows of a place, please let me know.

This is good to know!  I took a class at the Art Academy during the summer, and one night, one of the security guards was eating soft serve ice cream as I was leaving around 9:00 PM.  I asked him where he got it, and he said someplace around the corner (I can't remember the name).  I wonder if this is the same place.

Where is this place in relation to Lucy Blue?

across the street next to the old germania building (or whatever the name of the building with the nice statute right there is called).

^No, it is a block north of that at 1233 Walnut.  It is called Ice Cream Palace, phone 421-2307.

hmmm, then what am I thinking of?

^Maybe the karate and candy store, or Lucy Blues

Hathaways in the Carew Tower makes great milkshakes (I dont know the hours though). I know there used to be a place in the 525 building skywalk but I am not sure if it is still there.

It isn't downtown but in Mt. Adams, you have UDF.  If you are on Fourth, it is just as quick to walk up to Mt. Adams as it is to go to OTR.  I have done it several times.  You also have Cold Stone in Newport on the Levee right over the Purple People Bridge.  Hopefully Graeters will be opening that rumored Fountain Square location soon.

Unfortunately, Hathaway's does not have late night hours.  :(  They close at four.

McCormick's and Schimdt are taking reservations now.  There is a group of 9 of us going before the BNL concert next Friday night.  One perk to the restaurant is their $1.95 happy hour on food.  I know this place will be a success on the Square.

We've decided to make a downtown weekend of New Year's Eve and got a room at the Millennium for Saturday and Sunday.  Made reservations for that Saturday at McCormick and Schmicks and we'll do the Bengal's game on Sunday.  Topped off by the actual New Year's Eve celebration at a downtown bar I suppose.  I'd love for their to be something on Fountain Square at midnight - A Pig Drop?  Fireworks?

I keep checking to see if any of the local hotels are having a New Years Eve bash but haven't found much.  I did see that Jeff Ruby's was having a special dinner with a champagne toast at midnight.  I also think there might be an event at Music Hall.  Anything else going on downtown for New Years?

We went to an event at the Netherland Hilton a few years ago.  You might want to call them and ask.

It expects to open a restaurant diagonally opposite Fountain Square “as early as fall 2007,” it said in a statement.

Bar to replace adult spot in Covington

Cincinnati Business Courier - 8:45 AM EST Fridayby Lucy MaySenior Staff Reporter

The Pad, the Covington adult entertainment spot that for years boasted it featured "Kentucky's most beautiful girls," is being replaced by a new bar targeting older patrons who want a good drink without the wiggle.

Called The Avenue, the new bar has a grand opening scheduled for Dec. 1, she said. It features a 43-feet-long bar along the wall and live music in the window.

So downtown Newport gets a Graeter's and Cincinnati doesn't?  When will he hear an announcement about a Graeter's confrimed for Fountain Square?

Graeter's plans 2 new stores

BY CLIFF PEALE | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER

Two of the region’s most popular retail names, Graeter’s Ice Cream and Dewey’s Pizza, will join forces to develop a new retail center on Cox Lane and University Drive in West Chester.

Graeter’s also said it will open a store at 342 Monmouth St., one block from Newport on the Levee, early next summer.

Graeter's just built store in Deerfield in a hidden location off Mason-Montgomery.  I think it is a pretty crappy location.

I gotta say ... McCormick's and Shmicks has been packed every time I have walked by and looked in the window. Great restaurant for FS!

I agree.  Awesome addition to the streetscape.  Good food, good prices and nice atmosphere.  Love it!

I finally hit Vinyl this Saturday night and it did not disappoint.  Interesting concept, good vibe, eclectic mix of people, the food was presented well and most importantly tasted good.  I had the Chicken Dinner and it was excellent; I also managed to finagle a mini Kobe cheeseburger from my wife and a mini chicken burger from my sister in law which were both very good as well.  We wanted to go back to try their brunch on Sunday, but we were at a party a little too late that night and did not make it very far Sunday morning.  I thought the menu was pretty reasonably priced for the concept.  With drinks and tip out bill was just under $90, but the food portion was  less than half of it.   I will definately be back, it is a fun place to get you in the mood for going out and should be an asset to the area.

On a down note -I know i'm stating what has been discussed but, man is the Main St entertainment area a ghost town on weekends!!!  I've probably only been down there 3 times in the last year on a weekend night, but everytime it's still wierd to me how many placed are closed and how few people are out around there.

^i don't have to worry about parking when I go to Kaldis so it works out well for me.

I recommend Mr. Pitiful's on Main, just north of 13th Street, as a place to go after dining at Vinyl.

Yeah Mr. Pitifuls knows whats up.  It is a really diverse spot as well.

Ignore this - I did not realize this had already been posted under Projects.

This has been discussed before, but it looks like Friday's is opening downtown.  Obviously not the most unique place, but it is good to add options to the list:

CINCINNATI -- Another new restaurant is coming to downtown Cincinnati, and it's a well-known chain.

News 5 has learned that TGI Fridays will open a location at Tower Place Mall next year.

Kaldi's is going to have a new menu and serve panni sandwiches from when the kitchen closes until when the bar closes.

In addition they have a new barrellhouse, a winter belgian ale.  very tasty

Pho Paris moving to Kentucky[/size]

BY POLLY CAMPBELL | THE CINCINNATI ENQUIRER

Pho Paris, Jean-Robert de Cavel’s Vietnamese-French fusion restaurant, is moving from Oakley to Covington. It will close after celebrating New Year’s Eve, then re-open by the end of January at 318 Greenup Street.

For some reason, I don't feel nearly as bad about this move...sounds like it wasn't making it where it was in Oakley, and that it was either drop it or move it...and man, that section of Greenup could use the tenant too - a number of places have closed in that section of Covington - as much as I mourn for Oakley, I'd love to see that section of Covington come back to life again!

Oddly enough I feel the same way, Oakley will be just fine with or without Pho Paris.  That location seems to be a black hole for restaurants, Andiamo! didn't last very long there either.  Kind of strange, but it may be that the location's ample offstreet parking is what hurts it (not to mention the wierd little strip it's in).  The restaurant space sits far enough back off of Madison, and across the parking lot, that a lot of people I know who live in Oakley -and probably drive by it daily- do not know were it is.  When I tell them it is across the street from Boca they know exactly where it is because Boca fronts Madison.

I also think the making the restaurant a little less formal & inexpensive will go a long way to increasing it's popularity regardless of location.  The French-Vietnamese fusion concept is interesting and I think they execute it fairly well; however, it still a niche market and they end up falling somewhere between the fine dining crowd and the PF Changs crowd.   People that want to get dressed and spend a little more on a nice dinner don't necessarily think of Pho Paris as a first option and people that are looking to go out and get asian will think it's too fancy/pricey.  Personally, if I'm craving Vietnamese and don't feeling like making an evening of it, my first thought is Song Long (owned by Jean Ro's partners in Pho Paris) in Roselawn instead.

Glad to hear it's staying open though regardless of where it is.  I like the Greenup area as well and they could use a shot in the arm.
