Longtime Oakley bar closes, plans move to new location

A5RPONV0KNH2Z2BAASSF5E0OGIPPJWOL2VITGBFZ

A bar and cafe that has called Oakley home since the 1980s is closing temporarily as it moves to a new location.

Habits Cafe, which has been at 3036 Madison Road since 1980, hosted its last day at that location on April 20. The restaurant and bar, which opened its doors while Oakley was better known as a hub for biker bars than one of Cincinnati's hottest neighborhoods, is moving across the street to the Oakley Laundromat building at 3029 Madison Road.

Habits owner Mark Rogers said the building housing his cafe sold late last year and the new owners would not take a meeting with him to talk about his lease. He was given until the end of May to move Habits out of the space.

Mediterranean restaurant coming to Short Vine

A Northern Kentucky Mediterranean restaurant is turning to Cincinnati for its second location, opening on Short Vine, near the heart of the University of Cincinnati.

Kabobske is coming to the former Which 'Wich spot at 2904 Vine St. with the hope of opening by mid-August. Owner Andy Hajjar said he was attracted to the location's proximity to the university and hospitals.

Hajjar is a longtime Cincinnati restaurateur. He opened Andy's Mediterranean Grille in Walnut Hills in the 1990s (he has since left that restaurant, which is now operated by his brother Majed). The first Kabobske opened in 2016 and grew out of Andy Hajjar's food truck.

A longtime Cincinnati restaurateur is launching two new food trucks, one an extension of his original brand and the other leaning into his cultural heritage.

Sammy Flores, owner of Sammy's Craft Burgers & Beers at 4767 Creek Road in Blue Ash, is launching two mobile restaurant operations: Sammy's Craft Burgers & Beers Food Truck and Sammy's Tacos & Turtles food trailer.

"I've always had two passions: one is burgers and the other is tacos," Flores told me. "I always wanted to open a taco place, so when the opportunity for mobile came about, I thought it was a good testing ground for us. I have a lot of passion for creative and new dishes."

Historic Clifton restaurant and venue getting overhauled

ludlowgarage2018steveziegelmeyer-4189-co

A historic Clifton restaurant and music venue is undergoing an overhaul that will completely change its concert experience.

The Ludlow Garage at 342 Ludlow Ave. will close for renovation following Al Stewart's June 1 show, with plans to reopen in time for the venue's 50th anniversary show starring Dweezil Zappa on Sept. 19.

The renovation will completely overhaul the subterranean concert space, knocking out walls to reconfigure its unique "L" shape and nearly double the seating capacity from 300 to 500. The owners, Claudia and Dave Taylor, are also taking out the fixed seating and installing new seats that can be removed to allow for standing room capacity.

It's very weird. In addition to the L-shape they have movie theater chairs. It's not really a fun space for music. They should just do away with the seating entirely.

I never liked that Cock & Bull painted over the glazed terra cotta base of that building.  It's one of the few commercial/mixed use pre-depression art deco buildings in the city (especially that still has its original steel casement windows), as compared to all the 4-plexes that are more from the 1930s streamline modern era.  I'll be surprised if there's any way to remove the paint without destroying the terra cotta beneath, but I'll also be equally surprised if it doesn't start to peel pretty soon too.

What, because the west side is the only place that has an Olive Garden?

It's sad the booming Cincinnati restaurant scene has all but ignored the west side. It's nice to see Nation Kitchen taking on a new location in the Westwood Town Hall district soon.

Westsiders are indeed partaking in the wealth of restaurants available today, they just have to drive to them. I think the first few places that realize this and locate there will establish a presence and do very well.

Restaurant owners have been wary to open there because of their propensity for driving to other places for meals. There aren't many walkable places on the west-side, and once someone gets in their car, all of a sudden they have tons of food options anywhere within a 20 minute drive of them.  There's a reason Westwood and E Price Hill get the new/trendy west-side ventures, people are able to walk to those restaurants.

If you're going to start a trendy restaurant in a place that you need to drive, I'd place it near not only a population center, but a place that people work, and there's tons of offices on the north and east side.

There's offices on the West Side, it's just that they have huge warehouses attached to them.

New concept opens in former Blackbird Eatery space in O'Bryonville

A prepared meal concept from a former General Electric engineer is now open in the former Blackbird Eatery space in O'Bryonville.

Dinner to Doorbells moved into 3009 O'Bryon St. in the beginning of May. Signage went up on the building on May 31. The concept took over the space that was occupied by Blackbird Eatery, which opened in April 2018 before closing in March of this year.

Dinner to Doorbells is a prepared meal concept, offering fully prepared meals that just need to be heated before eating. The company was started by Beth Russell. Russell worked as an engineer for GE for eight years after graduating college until she had her daughter.

Driven by demand, Pendleton coffee shop moving to new digs

urbana-coffee-new-location*600xx1280-853

A Pendleton coffee shop that started life as a blue espresso Vespa is more than doubling its space in order to keep up with demand and expand its offerings.

Urbana Cafe opened its brick-and-mortar at 1206 Broadway St. back in 2015. For context, Pendleton wasn't the booming hotspot it is now at that time. Nation Kitchen + Bar existed, but Three Points Urban Brewery, Boomtown Biscuits & Whiskey, Lucius Q and Pendleton Parlor did not.

Urbana is a small 750-square-foot coffee shop that can seat about 17 people. It's moving into the final vacant corner spot in the heart of Pendleton, at 1130 Broadway St., where it will anchor that intersection along with Lucius Q, Nation and Boomtown, with the goal of opening this fall.

That place shot themselves in the foot. Terrible management and unfortunately a poorly trained staff chased many patrons away. I have gone down there with colleagues and ended up going over hour and half before food arrived for lunch. You cant be successful in downtown if lunch isnt done within an hour. They were constantly messing up orders, or just out of food. It was a doomed venture early on. Plus that intersection at the moment is a dead zone...

Really enjoyed their food but you are right, a sit down lunch was not an option for most downtown workers. I used Ritual a couple times to get a pick-up from them. Somehow they were always able to get an order ready in 15-20 minutes.

The layout of that place as it exists currently is hilariously strange.

Plus, the bartender was wearing Steelers stuff and taunting Bengals fans during the final 2 minutes of that fateful 2015 playoff game...and predictably it actually erupted into fisticuffs.  It was a-hole Pittsburgh fan culture in a nutshell.

Downtown photo shoot to announce they're opening a store in...Mason?

It's for the "buy it in Mason, drive to the Riverfront garage, park and walk out onto the Suspension bridge for Instagram photo" crowd!

Something appears to be going on inside the former Local 127 location. Windows are papered over and I saw a construction worker going in the front door.

Nearly 3 years later, construction activity happening again at this location.

Taglio Pizza, a concept born in Columbia Tusculum featuring deep dish Detroit-style pizza with caramelized cheese, is now open in the old Lachey's Bar space in Over-the-Rhine.

Taglio opened at 56 E. 12th St. on June 17. It's the second pizza concept by brothers Nicolas and Jared Wayne, who opened A Tavola at 1220 Vine St. in 2010. Flip through the photos for a look inside.

The Waynes opened their first Taglio at 3531 Columbia Parkway in 2016.Taglio offers a full variety of pizzas, but the menu's star is the Detroit-style pizza. The rectangular pizzas are thick-crust, deep-dish pizzas traditionally baked in square pans used to hold auto parts, which results in a crispy crust and caramelized cheese.

Fausto, downtown's newest restaurant, now open inside Contemporary Arts Center

After finding success in San Francisco's restaurant scene, brothers Tony and Austin Ferrari returned to their native Cincinnati to make a go of it here. Their newest eatery just opened inside of the Contemporary Arts Center downtown.

Fausto opened June 24 in the lobby of the Contemporary Arts Center. Flip through the photos for a look inside.

Fausto is the third concept to occupy that space – it was originally home to a Collective Espresso bar, then to Melt Eclectic Cafe's second location. But make no mistake, Fausto is not a museum cafe.
