Longtime OTR restaurant closing to make way for new concept

The Thunderdome Restaurant Group is closing Kaze OTR, a Japanese restaurant and bar that it took over in March, in order to make way for a new restaurant concept.

Kaze has always been one of the least popular restaurants on Vine despite its great space. They have by far the best outdoor space in that area. Considering Thunderdomes past success I’m sure whatever new idea they put there will do well.

Sartre OTR Will Close Its Doors After the New Year

"Regretfully, after two wonderful years, Sartre will be closing its doors on Wednesday, January 1st," the post from Jim Cornwell and the Sartre staff read.  "We are very grateful for the love and support from not only our guests, but from all the hard working farmers and craftsman that kept us supplied with inspiration. We would love to see all of you one last time before we go. Reservations are greatly appreciated. Thank you once again for your support. When one door closes, another opens. So stay tuned to see what we have planned for the space in early 2020!"

I thought it was bizarre that Rhinegeist opened such a high concept/fine dining restaurant in that space. A simple gastropub type of restaurant would have done amazingly well with the crowd that packs Rhinegeist every weekend.

I always really enjoyed Kaze. The food was really good and the interior was well designed and unique. It was one of our go-to restaurants on weekend nights when almost every other place in OTR had a line out the door. I think it probably suffered for a few reasons. Firstly, for its entire existance, it was at the northern edge of the Vine Street restaurant strip. This has finally changed with the redevelopment of the 1400 block of Vine Street, but it was too late to help Kaze.

8459401086_8f37e3f898_k.jpg

Secondly, I think your average Cincinnatian didn't really know what type of food they served and/or wasn't adventurous enough to try it out. Most of the other places on Vine Street can be simply explained as "the fried chicken place", "the taco place", "the barbecue place," etc. I think when Rand and Nance from Green Twp. come to OTR for their monthly date night, they're less likely to want to try a "Japanese gastropub" than one of those other options.

Kaze was my go to for happy hour specials. Before Thunderdome took it over, I feel Kaze easily had the best happy hour deal in the entire city.

Bar 1883 on the 2nd floor of Kroger OTR has $5 drafts, wine, and well drinks daily (5-7).

Dutch in Hyde Park now closed... What's going on with Hyde Park lately and their rash of shut downs?

Kaze was pretty good, shame to see it go - the space was really awesome (though IMO there is better ramen / japanese food at Zundo - its one of the best Japanese places I've been to outside of California).

Let's hope the same doesn't happen to Quan Hapa.

Quan Hapa is a much smaller space so it always feel pretty full and is probably cheaper to rent so I hope it stays around for a while. I think Kaze is an amazing building with the garage bar, outdoor patio it could be a really great space.

Troeros, I think to some extent Hyde Park square is going through the same process as Mt. Adams where it's becoming less of a destination for outsiders and is becoming more of a true neighborhood district for just the people who live in that neighborhood. It's not as extreme as Mt. Adams because it was never as much of a going out destination, but years ago I would occasionally have to drive to Hyde Park Square for a nice dinner, and now I just go to OTR/Covington. I'm probably not the only one.

^ Except Dutch's and Keystone are in East Hyde Park, so they have nothing to do with the square.  Dutch's surprises me, but Keystone was kind of weird as it's a two-story building and a big outdoor space in front.  There's only one building between the two, so I wonder if someone is trying to scoop up that whole block for a redevelopment.

That section of Hyde Park has always had a fair amount of turnover. There used to be a great Indian fusion called Cumin where Cafe Mediterranean is now, which I really miss, as there is currently no other restaurant in Cincinnati attempting to do that style of food.

Covington eatery's signature dish earns high praise from 'New Yorker' critic

anchorgrill*750xx1200-675-0-0.jpg

A longtime Covington diner known for its late-night grub got a shoutout recently from New Yorker magazine.

In an article titled “The Best Things I’ve Eaten This Decade,” food correspondent Helen Rosner lists the G.L.T. (goetta, lettuce and tomato) at the Anchor Grill that she consumed “in a hungover stupor” as among “some really excellent sandwiches.”

Rosner refers to the the “alluringly grimy” Anchor, “which has been open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, since (as far as I am aware) the beginning of time.”

Popular restaurant at Lunken Airport gets reprieve

A historic restaurant inside Lunken Airport is expected to stay open after all, WKRC-TV reports.

The city of Cincinnati has reached a new lease agreement with the owner of Sky Galley. The city was going to cancel its lease with the restaurant after food safety violations were found, but an online petition that drew more than11,000 signatures caught the attention of city leaders.

If approved, the lease will keep the restaurant right where it is until 2024, but the decades-old diner needs some improvements.

Cincinnati eatery makes Vogue's list of 2020's most anticipated restaurants

kinleycincinnati*750xx1280-720-0-0.png

A downtown Cincinnati restaurant that has yet to open is already generating national buzz.

Khora, a pasta-driven concept set to open this spring in the Kinley Hotel, 37 W. Seventh St., is on Vogue’s list of “2020’s Most Anticipated American Restaurant Openings."

A pair of acclaimed Louisville chefs, Ed Lee and Kevin Ashworth, are behind the concept. It’s the only restaurant in Ohio to make the list, which was dominated by restaurants from New York, Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles.

Ashworth is a Cincinnati native who graduated from Midwest Culinary Institute at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College. He started in Louisville as a line cook and sous chef at Lee's 610 Magnolia. In 2014, Lee appointed him opening chef for Louisville's MilkWood, which was named a semifinalist for the James Beard Foundation's Best New Restaurant later that year.

Fast-casual soup and sandwich eatery Tom & Chee is unveiling its new prototype restaurant design – and the first new location since its 2017 acquisition by Gold Star Chili – in Anderson Township this weekend, which will influence all new locations going forward.

Tom & Chee, located at 7578 Beechmont Ave. in the Anderson Towne Center, opens to the public 10:30 a.m. Jan. 11. The store, the first new company-owned location since its acquisition by GSR Brands, the parent company of Gold Star and Tom & Chee, serves as a prototype for both the look and feel and menu of new Tom & Chee locations. Flip through the photos for a look inside.

"We have completely revamped the interior space of Tom & Chee from the previous generation," CEO Roger David told me. "It's a little more sophisticated. It really lines up with the type of food we offer."

The newest venue by the Thunderdome Restaurant Group is a love letter to the founders' Italian family. Come take a look inside.

Pepp & Dolores opened Dec. 17 at 1501 Race St., and the founding Lanni brothers – Joe and John – and their partner Alex Blust have been putting the finishing touches on the Italian eatery. Flip through the photos for a look inside.

Thunderdome also operates Currito, Bakersfield, the Eagle, CityBird, Krueger’s Tavern, Maplewood, Kaze and SoHi. Pepp & Dolores was named for the Lannis' grandparents Guiseppe, or “Peppe,” and Addolorata, or “Dolores.” The couple emigrated to the United States (by way of Canada) from their home in the south of Italy in 1955.

West Side icon seized by IRS, set for auction

An institution on Cincinnati’s West Side has been seized by the Internal Revenue Service and is set to go up for auction next week.

The Farm, a banquet hall and event center at 239 Anderson Ferry Road in Delhi Township, has been owned by the Elsaesser family for more than 70 years. Current owner Daniel Elsaesser said the event center currently owes about $126,000 in payroll taxes, which resulted in the seizure of the property.

He said the company is continuing to operate despite the scheduled auction of the property that begins at 11 a.m. Jan. 22.

Elsaesser said The Farm has operated as an honest business for its existence and has filed all of its tax forms on time.

“The local IRS agents have been very nice, but they have to follow the rules from Washington,” he told me. “There’s no way they could lose money on it by giving us more time.”

Boom Box Buns, which currently operates a late night window on Woodward Street, announced that they will open a permanent location in the former Picnic & Pantry space at 14th & Republic:

Excited for them, but I think they'll do a fraction of the business at that location. Their current location off of Main is perfect.

It sounds like they might be looking at expanded options, but it would be nice if they could keep their current location running, too.

Customer aquisition. Location always play a role for a business to be successful, but the aquisition of the customer via social media is just as vital. They have done an excellent job on exposing their brand through social media, creating "boom box stickers", etc.

The thing about their off the beaten path location on main was that you typically didn't know it was their unless you found out through Instagram/Facebook. The guy who makes the buns isn't even their every weekend selling them...so I think that just really highlights how important social media is with driving sales and customer aquisition.

I think this location will be fairly successful as long as they keep consistent hours, expand their menu a bit, and hopefully target late night folks who want to eat after drinking.

The magic of their current space is that it's so close to all of the bars on Main Street, and so accessible. The area around Race/Elm/Vine is more of a restaurant district, not a bar district. It doesn't have that built-in audience that Main Street has. It's why Goodfellas does so well on Main Street. If it was on Republic, they would probably do less than half their current weekend business IMO.

The new night club, "Ghost Baby" will open soon a few blocks down off on republic/Vine. The Jazz Bar will open in the Behlen Vine Street building in the spring, standard otr (a craft beer shop/tap room bar) will open a few blocks away on 15th and race. Bar Bar OTR by the Queen City Radio folks will open soon as well on race. I have a feeling they will ultimately be fine...but I do wonder if the recently renovated Columbia Building commercial space off of Walnut would have been better to some degree.

I just wanted to add that I hope this building can finally have a long term tenant. It's a really strong spot that has a turn over for tenants. Picnic and Pantry was a nice little bodega type of store, and the Indian place was decent but really confusing. Hopefully boom box can stay longer than a handful of years.

Peek inside Kroger’s newest Kitchen 1883 restaurant

1883beechmont0983*750xx1800-1013-0-94.jp

Walk in to Kroger Co.’s new Kitchen 1883 restaurant in Anderson Township and it feels dramatically different from the supermarket giant’s other full-service Kitchen 1883 location in Union, near Florence.

Huge windows on two sides bathe the space in light. The dining area has a more open feel and the bar is separated from the dining area and the open kitchen.

Yet many things are remarkably similar as downtown Cincinnati-based Kroger (NYSE: KR) launches its second full-service standalone Kitchen 1883 restaurant (it also has a location in the food hall of its downtown store that features walk-up ordering, self-seating and a limited menu). The menu is exactly the same as the Union location, for now anyway. So are the prices. It aims to provide customers that same sense of comfort food done well.

Article mentions Late Fed/Early March Opening Date...Tuesday to Saturday, will be open till 9 or 10pm, they haven't decided yet.

Slightly disappointing that once again very few food entrepreneurs capitalize the late night bar crowd on weekends...I mean goodfellas line often stretches out the door for a block around 2:00am. Clearly there is demand for food after drinking, so why don't more otr dining options capitalize on this?

29 minutes ago, troeros said:

It depends on the place. Their new location - as I said earlier - isn't in Main Street, so the drunk crowd isn't going to walk all the way over to get Boom Box unless they really want that specific place. They'll just go to Goodfellas.

Also, the place across the street from Goodfellas did late night food (including some really good, cheap coneys!) and people decided to wait in line at Goodfellas instead. It's still a tough business.

You also have to consider the additional expenses cleaning up after the drunks who are more likely to cause problems at 2am than they would at 10pm.

Well, it's looking like CityBird will be the only restaurant from the chicken tender wave that survives. What's more surprising is that all of the burger joints that opened in the 2015 burger wave have survived—Americano, Bru, BurgerFi, and Nation. And while Krueger's technically opened in December 2014, I think 2015 was the year that they redid their menu to focus on burgers.

I think the northeast quadrant of downtown is still a tough location for a fast casual / lunch-oriented restaurant. While there are lots of new apartment buildings in this corner of downtown, there's isn't a high concentration of office workers (compared to other parts of the CBD). I don't see the situation really improving until a new office building is built on the Joseph lot or the jail is relocated and that real estate is redeveloped—both of which are long shots currently.

In the mean time, it would be great for this corner of downtown to get more restaurants/cafes/bars that are open later and cater to the residents of The Renaissance, Sycamore Place, Seven at Broadway, Encore, and Crane Factory Flats, and guests at the Holiday Inn. Arnold's and Crown Republic seem to be doing really well with all of the added residential population. Cheapside is only open to 3 p.m. during the week but they have been having occasional dinner pop-ups, and I think they would do well if they added permanent evening hours.
