Hyde Park staple Dutch's to reopen this summer under new owner

Dutch's, a Hyde Park institution that closed at the beginning of this year, will reopen this summer under new ownership, and it's a familiar face for Cincinnati's culinary scene.

Dutch's at 3378 Erie Ave. is now under the ownership of Chef Brad Bernstein, chef-owner of Oakley's Red Feather Kitchen and Postmark in Clifton, who hopes to reopen it with a new focus in August.

Dutch's has been a Hyde Park institution since it opened as a pony keg – a shop for purchasing beer to-go – in 1947. It was most recently purchased by Jay Ashmore in 2007, who expanded it into the neighboring building to open a bar in 2010. It was again expanded into Dutch's Larder, offering upscale eats and high-quality charcuterie, in 2012.

Does anybody have good examples of restaurants, bars, breweries, etc. that are doing an exceptionally good job with social distancing and hygiene practices? Here are a few that I have seen:

  • 50 West (brewery + burgers) -- Very good outdoor setup, tons of space between tables. Customers must go up to the bar to order food and drinks.
  • Arnolds (bar + restaurant) -- Only doing outdoor seating on the street and in their courtyard. Lots of space between tables.
  • Big Ash (brewery) -- I haven't been myself, but based on pictures I've seen, they have turned a large section of their parking lot into a biergarten with tons of space to spread out. They did have an employee test positive for Covid-19 and temporarily closed the place, but have now reopened.
  • Rosedale OTR (bar) -- After getting bad publicity when they first reopened, they changed their practices and are doing a really good job now. They switched to a table service model for now, with guests asked to remain seated except to go to the bathroom.
  • Queen City Radio (bar) -- I haven't been since reopening, but they have a very large outdoor seating area.

Any others?

Madtree for sure

Matt the Miller’s owner wants to walk away from Cincinnati-area restaurant

Matt the Miller's is seeking an exit from one of its Cincinnati restaurants.

The Dublin-based restaurant brand is being sued in the Hamilton County Court of Common Pleas for not paying rent for its Kenwood Collection location.

Kenwood Collection Retail is looking to recover all past due rent and other charges under the 10-year lease, totaling more than $129,000, and to immediately collect all rent that will become due during the remainder of the lease term, totaling more than $2.4 million.

Craig Barnum, CLB Restaurants Holdings LLC president and managing partner, said his attorneys are working on a response to the complaint. He said he is hopeful to figure out a mutually agreeable way to exit the location.

“I hope they come to the table and work with us and move on,” Barnum told me. “Unfortunately businesses fail. We gave it our best shot there. It’s just time to move on.”

Barnum said the restaurant was losing “a lot of money” every month but was expected to pay rent every month. When Whole Foods and Envision Cinemas did open, Barnum said Kenwood Collection installed 23 tow away signs in the surface lot in front of the development. The result was patrons going to visit the movie theater parking in the parking garage beneath Kenwood Collection. Instead of walking by Matt the Miller’s on their way to the theater, they were able to access an elevator in the garage that led directly to Envision Cinemas.

You expect to open a restaurant in Greater Cincinnati and only succeed because you are in between the walk from the parking lot to the movie theater?

Is their...food...good?

I like their food. Prices aren't super bad but you'll pay for brunch. I mostly went to the Grandview location. Pretty sure I went to the Polaris one once.

I wouldn't be surprised if this development is still a tough place to do business after 13 years of fits and starts.

Group of us ate at the one in West Chester. Amongst the group I wouldn't say we are food snobs but we all looked at each other after dinner and were like this wasn't good at all. Nothing tasted bad but nothing stood out as memorable or oh man I gotta eat that again.

Never heard of it.

I am not surprised by this. The new ownership group from Atlanta, didn't really care for this urban location. They received an incentive by the Carew tower ownership and real estate group. My understanding was the build out was covered by the building. Shame it was a nice addition to downtown again.

We would sometimes go to the Gest St. location after Reds games.  I'll miss it.  Related to that, we tried to go to the Carew Tower locations a couple times, but it was always closed by the time games were over, even on the weekend.

Between Reds games and Fountain Square events being cancelled, and the lunchtime population of the CBD being significantly down, I'm not surprised that location struggled.

Maybe Boi Na Braza can move into that space?

Even before Covid that location struggled. The food just wasn't good, even by Frisch's standards. I gave it two attempts and both times had major issues with the food and just stopped going, especially with Hathaway's in the same building. I think people thought Frisch's would put Hathaway's out of business but it appears the opposite has happened. Hopefully Hathaway's can stay open with limited hotel guests and office worker's downtown.
